Shop 4 Gr eat Stor es Looking at the painting on the cover, viewers probably feel as though they are directly on the water — as opposed to looking at the sailboat from the shoreline. And that’s the whole idea, according to Richard “Rich” Delcarson, this year’s Key to the Door Illustrated cover artist. “On Eagle Harbor” depicts a sailboat named Flight and its owner Bob Davis, a friend of Delcarson. Davis is shown with his son, Rob. Delcarson, a boater himself, recalled circling Flight a number of times. In fact, he cruised fairly close and took photographs. The pictures later served as reference as he chose the best angle, drew the scene and painted in his Fish Creek home studio. “It was a nice day, a beautiful day. Everything was blue around me — the water was blue, the sky was blue,” Delcarson recalled. The 20-by-24-inch painting is done in oil, a medium Delcarson prefers. He also likes gouache, which is an opaque watercolor. Each medium has its advantages and disadvantages, he said. Gouache is very forgiving, according to Delcarson. He used it often during his commercial art career when he needed to make fast changes in advertisements. “With oil, you can’t make changes. You don’t have time for it to dry,” Delcarson said. “Gouache is a beautiful medium. If you love a tree, but want to move it, you can paint it out and put it in another place,” he said. “One of the things I like about oil is it is permanent. It is going to be there,” he continued. A glass covering is not necessary for an oil painting, but it is needed to protect a gouache image. “With gouache, you have to have glass over the painting. That detracts from the image a little bit I think. And with an oil painting, you just frame it and hang it. It’s easier to work with,” he said. The artist has taken a one-year “sabbatical leave” from oil painting —

Sister Bay’s Busiest Commercial Center for Over 100 Years Featuring time he said was necessary to break away from routine. He is returning to the easel with an open mind, uncertain whether he is going to continue painting Door County landscapes or choose a new direction for subject matter. “Sometimes you come to a point where maybe you want to do something else and paint something else,” Delcarson said. “So, I had to take a break and think about it. Now, I’m going to get back into it, but exactly what I’m going to paint I don’t know yet.” Delcarson, who hails from Detroit, Mich., was attracted to art as a child in the 1930s. He later attended Menzinger Art School and entered the commercial art field in 1949, drawing and painting automobiles for advertising. Delcarson created his car drawings from blueprints well in advance of when the cars —Chevrolets, Chryslers, Fords — were actually available to see. Eventually, he established his own art business, Delgraphics Studio, on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. A background in the U.S. Navy, drew Delcarson to boats and the water. In the 1950s he owned a Chris-Craft small power boat. Delcarson and his wife, Jane, a freelance calligrapher, began traveling to Door County in 1966. They retired in 1989 and moved from their home in Hinsdale, Ill., to the Peninsula. Today, their studio is known as Del Graphics, meaning “of the graphics.” Delcarson’s art has been part of juried exhibits at the Hardy Gallery, Miller Art Museum and the Door County Art League. Color prints of eight different Door County scenes by Delcarson are sold at the Cana Island Lighthouse, Miller Art Museum, Jacksonport Craft Cottage, Gwendolyn’s Art & Jewelry and at Del Graphics. “Door County is a mecca for subject matter,” Delcarson said.

Maritime history buffs and lighthouse enthusiasts have reason to celebrate in Door County. The peninsula, with its long history of maritime activity, is brimming with “must see� stops. Best of all, these sights and stops are easier than ever to access, thanks to the Wisconsin Maritime Trails program. The on-line site, maritimetrails.org, takes visitors on a tour of Wisconsin’s shorelines, with stops at historical sites along the way. The Door Peninsula--from Green Bay northward--is one region. Others include Wisconsin’s Lake Superior region, and two separate regions in southeastern Wisconsin. Click on a region and you’ll find a wealth of locations to visit, with in-depth information on each one. The trail isn’t a traditional walking, hiking kind, but rather, a virtual tour. By taking the information from the site, visitors can create their own, custom tour of the peninsula, featuring a series of real-life stops along the shore, from shipwreck locations to Native American campsites to prehistoric shoreline formations and fossils. And, of course, lighthouses.

In this day and age of Internet accessibility, the Maritime Trails site can be bookmarked on a mobile device and ready to go. But even if you aren’t up-to-speed on technology, with a little planning, you can create your tour. And most stops have informational boards on site. Now, if it’s lighthouses you’re after, the site lists them all, and provides information on each one. Click on Eagle Bluff Lighthouse in Peninsula State Park, for instance. There’s a photo, a description and a brief history. You’ll find out that it along with Cana Island Lighthouse near Baileys Harbor and Pottawatomie Light on Rock Island maintain public visiting hours in-season. There are 11 in all, nearly all still providing navigational aid to mariners. Each historic site includes a link to MapQuest for driving directions. (Although, be warned: We found driving directions were less than accurate on several locations. Best to stick with local sources and media like the Key to the Door Illustrated.) Some lighthouses are inaccessible to the public, like Pilot Island Lighthouse. But thanks to the Maritime Trails site, it is possible to view photos and learn how to get a little closer — close enough to see the relic. (The site indicates it is possible to see the lighthouse better while on a Washington Island Ferry crossing from Northport.) If you want to take the information with you, there are printable versions with information on each site. Probably the best reason to visit the Trails Internet site is to learn where the “secret� locations of Door County are -- the places only locals and long-time visitors know. And that may take you on a different path than merely lighthouses. There are, in fact, shoreline markers for several different things, like shipwrecks — some close enough and shallow enough, you can see their outlines and ribs jutting out from the surface. For scuba divers and snorkelers, mooring buoys are set on certain wrecks. As of this writing, the site’s access to mooring and dive information was not accessible. However, further information can be found at wisconsinshipwrecks.org, another site maintained by the State Historical Society and University of Wisconsin Sea Grant. Knowing the location of shipwrecks is a huge boon for the dive industry. Visitors unfamiliar with Door County waters now have opportunity to locate fabulous wrecks, even hard-to-find ones. But you don’t have to get wet to enjoy most of what the Maritime Trails program has to offer. There are several museums from Sturgeon Bay to Gills Rock and beyond, to the islands. The Trails site (along with another story in this issue) provides a description for each. Besides using Maritime Trails as a resource for planning a vacation tour around the peninsula, the site is wonderful for research. If you happen to know the name of a ship that wrecked in Wisconsin waters, even those not included on the Maritime Trails, and want to know more about its history, it’s an easy matter of submitting the ship’s name (in the “research� area of the site.) That feature, no doubt, is for the hardcore maritime history enthusiasts. The rest is simply fun to “surf.� There are so many photos, field notes and historical stories, you could find yourself virtually immersed in the Maritime Trail. But remember: As fun as that may be, nothing beats visiting the real deal in Door County.

Nearly everyone who visits Door County is impacted one way or another by its stunning collection of state parks. Maybe it was climbing the observation towers at either Peninsula or Potawatomi parks, hiking a trail at wilderness Newport, walking the beach at Whitefish Dunes or being captivated by the boathouse as your ferry approaches Rock Island. But if you’re visiting Door County and think you haven’t been impacted by a county-owned park you’re probably mistaken. Visitors rarely miss either Cave Point or Cana Island. Each is a county park, but the designation is rarely affixed to those iconic attractions. Cave Point, with its limestone bluffs and pounding surf, has been the jewel of the park system for years. A little further north up the Lake Michigan shore, Cana Island was just recently added to the park ledger after years of federal ownership. Its lighthouse and tower symbolize the county’s maritime heritage. Massachusetts-born landscape architect John Nolen’s recommendation for the formation of a state park system in Wisconsin was favorably received and formally implemented in 1909. Peninsula State Park (920-868-3258), an expanse of 3,776 acres, was established the same year. Door County would never be the same. While Peninsula is not only the county’s most heavily used park, it is one of the state’s most popular publicly-owned destinations. Peninsula’s primary appeal remains its stunning overlooks of the sparkling waters of Green Bay. It continues to be one of Wisconsin’s top camping destinations with 472 campsites. There you’ll also find popular Nicolet Beach, boat launches, a golf course, 20 miles of hiking and biking trails—including a rough-terrain mountain bike path — plus an extensive road system. It also is summer home to American Folklore Theatre’s stunning outdoor theater. Peninsula is located off Highway 42 between Ephraim and Fish Creek, Potawatomi State Park (920-746-2890) has its entrance on Park Road off Highway 42-57 south of Sturgeon Bay. It is a jewel of the Sturgeon Bay shoreline in Sawyer Harbor. The half-mile long Ancient Shores nature trail is a feature of the 17 miles of trails that wind through this 1,225-acre site. There is a boat ramp because this is a popular park among fishermen. Campers, too, find peaceful retreat in the 123 campsites the park provides. Rock Island State Park (920-847-2235) is the northernmost park in Door County. Day-trippers enjoy a magnificent beach, miles of inland and shore side hiking trails and there are 40 sites reserved for tent campers. Biking is not allowed on the island. A magnificent boathouse and the county’s oldest lighthouse are its primary structures. Outside of private boating, access to the island is via the ferry Karfi from Washington Island. On the mainland, a southbound traveler next can visit Newport State Park (920-854-2500) at the end of County Road NP, north of Ellison Bay. Newport’s 2,373 acres are devoted to a wilderness credo, so there’s only one mile of road for motor vehicles. The road terminates in a sand beach and picnic area from which radiate more than 30 miles of hiking trails, including some 15 miles of unpaved trails suitable for off-road bikes. There are no overnight spaces for RVs, but hardy backpackers enjoy 16 remote campsites, many on the shore of Lake Michigan. Whitefish Dunes State Park (920-823-2400) is off County Road WD from Highway 57 south of Jacksonport. The towering sand dunes of this 863-acre park form the backdrop of one of the best-loved beaches in Door County. Naturalist programs for every age level, along with exhibits on ancient cultures, are features of the well-equipped nature center. A two-mile self-guided nature trail highlights the trees and plants native to this part of Wisconsin. Behind the ancient dunes are more than 13 miles of hiking trails to explore. This a day-use park only, meaning there is no camping. Besides Cana and Cave Point, there are 17 other county parks which offer an eclectic mix representing historical footnotes, misnomers, family beaches, boat launches and unspoiled habitat.

AT SACRED GROUNDS

In Southern Door County, Sugar Creek Park is a wonderful piece of classic Door County property that sets the tone for the quiet, out-of-way nature of the county park system. Not far away, Robert LaSalle Park on County Highway U commemorates the landing spot of the French explorer although its accuracy has been questioned. Regardless of its historical significance, it’s a great place to discover a stunning Lake Michigan sunrise. The first Door County park was hardly influenced by the county’s stunning beauty. Tornado Park memorializes a small southern Door County village that was wiped out by the horrific firestorm of 1871. Located just off Highway 57, the quiet wayside marks the well site where residents of Williamsonville tried to escape the flames. The wildfire was the same one that ravaged Peshtigo on the other side of Green Bay on the same day of the famed Chicago fire. One other wayside, Meridian Park near Jacksonport, marks the 45th parallel (midway between the equator and the North Pole). Unfortunately, meridian is a term that refers to longitude rather than latitude. Further north, Ellison Bluff Park is another lesser known favorite just off Highway 42 south of Ellison Bay. But it features one of the most scenic overlooks on the Peninsula. Door Bluff Headlands occupies the northernmost real estate on the Door Peninsula. The park is an undeveloped natural area of woods and cliffs on Green Bay, west of Gills Rock, with natural trails, but no facilities. The narrow Peninsula offers one the opportunity to dip a foot into Lake Michigan at The Ridges beach in Baileys Harbor and then hop in the car for a short drive to Frank Murphy Park off County Highway G in Egg Harbor for a swim in Green Bay. The remains of excavated quarry provide a stunning backdrop and reminder of the mining and loading port that operated around the new Old Stone Quarry Park on County Highway B north of Sturgeon Bay there. Today, recreational boats load and off-load. It’s one of a number of launching facilities the parks department operates. The county provides other launch facilities, ideal picnic spots and beaches from Forestville to Washington Island. The Link Gallery, which literally links Gibraltar Schools with the Door Community Auditorium in Fish Creek, was created to accommodate exhibits that promote understanding and explore ideas in the humanities, the creative arts, history and the sciences. Three years ago, the acclaimed Birch Creek Music Performance Center opened this free public gallery on its property three miles east of Egg Harbor on County Highway E. The first year, the gallery showcased “Birch Creek Through Lens and Brush,” an exploration of the music center as a source of inspiration for visual artists. The next year, “Birch Creek Associates — Celebrating 20 Years” featured photography that documented the work and successes of Birch Creek’s volunteer corps.

The Miller Art Museum, given to Door County by Ruth and Gerhard Miller in 1975, is located within the Door County Main Library in Sturgeon Bay. It features changing exhibitions as well as works from the permanent collection, including the late Gerhard Miller’s watercolor and egg tempera paintings. Exhibitions: April 23-May 31: “37th Annual Salon of Door County High School Art,” with an opening reception at 7-8:30 p.m. on April 25. Incorporates work in all media by students from Door County’s five high schools. June 4-July 19: “Wildlife Biennial XV,” with an opening reception at 5-6:30 p.m. on June 4. The exhibit features Wisconsin’s finest wildlife artists working in multiple media. In the last four decades, Door County’s hospital has amassed an impressive collection of artwork. In fact, it’s one of the largest such collections on the peninsula, showcasing a valuable cross-section of Door County’s art history. In the past, MDCMC exhibited rotating selections from its collection in a space known as the Corner Gallery. Moving forward, however, it will display featured artwork near the elevators to provide easy access to the general public, and the pieces will be hung as if in a professional gallery setting. At press time, MDCMC had not yet installed the apparatus required to hang the artwork. Gerald Worrick, president and CEO, said he anticipates resuming rotating shows next year. In the meantime, the public is welcome to view the artwork that permanently decorates its public spaces, particularly in the new $20.5 million addition.

Unitarian Universalist Gallery

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County, located in Sister Bay, has a public art gallery with monthly art exhibitions featuring the work of local artists in all media. The gallery also has an impressive permanent collection that includes the work of Angela Lensch and Louis Smolak. It’s open from May to October. Wisconsin is hoping to hook more anglers with its first-ever daily fishing license this summer. For sure, fishing solo can be a soul-soothing adventure, but fishing with a friend doubles the fun. The idea is for experienced anglers to invite someone on an outing. At $8 for residents or $10 for non-residents, it won’t break the bank. If the rookie likes it and wants more action, he’ll be able to deduct the amount already paid when upgrading to an annual license. Although the new license does not include fishing privileges for salmon or trout, it does allow the purchaser to fish for any other legal hook-and-line species that swims Kewaunee and Door County waters. The list of potential targets is long. Among the most popular on inland lakes and Green Bay waters are bass, bluegill, crappie, musky, northern pike, walleye and yellow perch. As always, young anglers age 15 and under — resident and non-resident alike — fish for free in Wisconsin, with no license or trout and salmon stamps needed. There’s also a Free Fishing Weekend for those who want to give it a try at no cost. This year’s dates are June 4-5. If you’re already a seasoned angler and want the excitement of knowing that the next strike could be a “money” fish, there are a variety of tournaments taking place. From small club events to the Midwest’s largest smallmouth fishing contest — the Sturgeon Bay Open May 13-15 (sbobt.org) — the Peninsula’s bayside waters attract hundreds of bass fishing fanatics, and for good reason: three-pound-plus smallies are common, five-pounders aren’t rare and monster bass larger than seven pounds have been weighed in tourneys the past two years. On the lakeside, there’s the Kewaunee Trout Fest Offshore Challenge July 16 (kewaunee.org), Kewaunee/Door County Salmon Tournament July 23-31 (kdsalmon.com) and Sturgeon Bay Offshore Challenge Aug. 19-21 (sturgeonbayoffshorechallenge.com). There’s also the Great Lakes Classic the third week of June and the Shanty Days Full Moon Fishing Contest Aug. 10-14, both at Algoma (wildtimes@wizunwired.net). Kewaunee County’s rich mix of agricultural, indoor and outdoor recreation and of course, fishing hot spots — Algoma and Kewaunee on the lake side and Dyckesville on Green Bay — attracts a diverse mix of visitors. From art galleries to antique shops and boutiques to wineries, there’s something for everyone. Fish markets, cheese factories and coffee houses lure many motorists along the roads less travelled south of Sturgeon Bay. There’s access to the Ahnapee State Trail, a century-old winery, thousands of feet of sandy shorelines and a half-mile, handicapped-accessible boardwalk made of recycled plastic at Algoma. Kewaunee has a lakeside park for beachcombers, a modern winery southwest of the city and an impressive salmon and trout egg-taking facility, small zoo and ATV and mountain bike course west of the city. The two ports combine for more than 50 charter boats and some of the best fishing on the Great Lakes, including state-leading Chinook salmon and rainbow trout catches. There are dozens of special events scheduled, including the Main Street Car Show May 21, Doll & Teddy Bear Show and Sale June 25 and Shanty Days Festival Aug. 12-14, all in Algoma; the Rio Creek Fly-In July 2 in Rio Creek; Trout Festival July 15-17 in Kewaunee; and Kewaunee County Fair in Luxemburg July 21-24. Kele Alpacas Day on the Farm Sept. 3 southwest of Kewaunee offers a chance to learn about alpacas, including spinning and weaving demonstrations; the Wet Whistle Wine Fest in Algoma Sept. 16-17 includes grape stomping competitions; and Ag Heritage Days Sept. 25-26 in Luxemburg features antique farm equipment, tractor and horse pulls and more.
