COMPLEMENTARY Local arts programs offer kids well-rounded education
LEARNING

ducators at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau work with hundreds of children to create art each year. But beyond the paintings, sculptures and sketch drawings that are created in classes at the Woodson, children learn valuable life skills, said Kathy Kelsey Foley, Woodson director. “It’s a huge self-esteem booster,” Foley said. Each year, children are able to showcase their creative projects at a family-day event. And children who create and participate in the arts grow up to be well-rounded adults, Foley said.

Valerie Berkely, center, an art instructor at the Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau, offers Maddie Glaser, right, advice on a painting March 31 during Spring Break Special at the CVA. Julia Cravens works on her painting.
“We need a range of experiences to truly be well-rounded,” Foley said. “The arts — music, theater, dance — those are the things that complement academic learning.” The Woodson is among many agencies in the Wausau area that provides art opportunities for children. Among those: Allegro Dance Theater, Wausau Conservatory of Music, the Everest Academy for the Arts and the Central Wisconsin School of Ballet. At the Central Wisconsin School of Ballet, children learn dance and movement. Children can participate in the school’s preballet, ballet, jazz, tap, modern dance or ballroom classes. The Wausau Conservatory of Music offers a range of classes for children between the ages of 18 months and 18 years, including voice lessons and private instrument lessons. “We cover the entire spectrum of ages and abilities and helping them learn what music is,” said Lynn Riska, registrar for the
conservatory. “We are watching them gain confidence, become engaged with the other students and gain skills.” But the children are learning more than songs, rhythm and movement. They also are learning a valuable life lesson: If they keep working hard at something, success will come, Riska said. The Center for the Visual Arts in Wausau is the place to go for children who want to create art with their parents. Children can take art classes that allow them to create such projects as glass mosaics, three-dimensional masks and paintings. “They get individual attention and the ability to express themselves while learning,” curriculum director Valerie Berkely said. Children have access to supplies at the center such as paint, brushes and canvas to create art. During the year, the center offers classes as well as open studio time so children can work with their parents, Berkely said. ••

Farmers market The city will continue to hold a farmers market on The 400 Block, starting June 23, but new this year will be an evening market, said Kari Rasmussen, executive director of Wausau Area Events. Ballon Rally and more One of the busiest weekends for entertainment and events will be July 7-10, when the city holds the Wausau Balloon Rally and Glow at the Wausau Downtown Airport. That event coincides with the Big Bull Falls BBQ Ribfest, Chalkfest on The 400 Block and the Wausau Open Slalom canoe and kayak event on the Wisconsin River. “It’s a perfect reason for people to stay in the area,” said Kari Rasmussen, executive director of Wausau Area Events. The city will offer free shuttle service from downtown to the Wausau airport for the balloon rally, allowing visitors to park their cars at either site and move easily from one to the other. The Wausau Open Slalom takes place July 9 and 10. Paddlers from the United States and junior paddlers from Australia and Canada are expected to compete for the right to enter the 2012 whitewater slalom world championships.

Big Bull Falls Blues Fest Back for its 20th year is Wausau’s Big Bull Falls Blues Fest, set for Aug. 19 and 20 on Isle of Ferns Park. The event brings in nine bands. Headlining the first night is Ana Popovic, a Serbian blues artist who has shared the stage with legends including B.B. King and Buddy Guy. Lonnie Brooks, a 2010 inductee into the Blues Hall of Fame, will hit the stage Aug. 20 as the headline artist. “We’re so excited because it’s our 20th year, and it’s Wisconsin’s longest-running blues festival,” Kari Rasmussen said. “It draws a lot of people from out of town, plus we’ve got such a great group of die-hard blues fans here already.”
Wisconsin Valley Fair Another summer tradition is the Wisconsin Valley Fair, held this year from Aug. 2-7. Along with carnival rides, livestock demonstrations and judging and traditional fair food, each night will feature grandstand entertainment. The Beach Boys, Styx, Sawyer Brown, Craig Morgan (left) and Sick Puppies will perform, and the fair will wrap up with a demolition derby.

Big Taste On Sept. 23, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northcentral Wisconsin will hold its Big Taste event, one of several annual fundraisers. This year’s event will take place in the Great Hall on Fourth Street in Wausau. Chefs from local restaurants, caterers and craft beverage makers will be on hand to provide samples of their creations. The event also includes the Big Chef Showdown, an Iron Chef-style event in which two chefs compete head-to-head, said Tom Kellnhauser, executive director of the organization. ••

CONCERTS ON THE SQUARE The free outdoor concert series will be back again this year, held on The 400 Block in downtown Wausau. The concerts will begin June 22 and will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday nights through Aug. 17, said Tammy Stezenski, the editor and publisher of City Pages, which presents the concerts with Wausau Area Events. Stezenski books the bands for the concert, and specific acts still were being determined at press time. But expect to see acts such as Copper Box, a party band from Oshkosh that mixes polka with rock and other musical genres, and Johnny & the MoTones, a Wausau-area blues/rock band. “We try to have a good variety,” Stezenski said. “We always try to have some rock, a little bit of country or honky-tonk, and reggae and salsa. You’ve got to have reggae and salsa in the summer when you’re outside.” To find out more, click on the “Concerts on the Square” button at www.wausauareaevents.org.

Musicians are yet to be determined for the June 25 and July 16 dates, he said, but Muddy Flats and the Hepcats will perform Aug. 13. For more information, go to www.ribmountain.org.

ausau’s explosion of change during the past 10 years has leaders hopeful the momentum will lead to continued development. Building off the success of a major downtown renovation and the completion of a major highway project, officials are keeping economic development and improving the quality of life at the forefront of their mission. “I think Wausau and the surrounding area has

done a great job positioning itself,” Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple said. “If you look at other cities, some haven’t done that well because they lost focus.” The city has erupted with development since 2000. Downtown saw millions of dollars put into a facelift that spans the heart of the city. The city of Wausau invested, too, helping to buy downtown properties on what now is known as The 400 Block, a popular green space that is home to weekly concerts, markets and more each summer. »»

Tipple and others said the next step for downtown is to develop to the north. The city took a major step in that development plan in December when it bought about 17 acres along the east side of the Wisconsin River from Bridge Street to Scott Street for $2.6 million. No firm plans have been put in place, but officials have ideas ranging from residential developments to a small marina. “It needs to be something that will complement our downtown,” Tipple said. “One of our weaker components is living downtown.” Dawn Follendorf, director of Main Street Wausau Inc., said she would like to see the downtown redeveloped to the north, along both sides of the river. She said a development that includes housing, restaurants and entertainment would be ideal. Also, she wants developers to maximize use of the river and River Edge Trail. “Momentum of this nature would no doubt increase the attractiveness of doing business on the (west side of the river), and would eventually translate into private reinvestment,” she said. On Wausau’s west side, retail and industrial growth took off during the past decade, slowed only by the Great Recession. Developer Ghidorzi Cos. constructed an array of commercial properties that spawned retail growth such as Buffalo Wild Wings and Jimmy Johns. In the Wausau West Business and Industrial Park, businesses relocated from other parts of the city while new ones opened their doors for the first time. With the completion of the $309 million Highway 51/29 corridor project, the city’s main corridor should only become more attractive to potential business, Tipple said. “Typically, when you do infrastructure and improvements, economic development follows closely behind that,” he said. The city also has other quality-of-life initiatives planned for coming

Plans include bike lanes and/or paths with every future road construction project completed, and completion of the River Edge Trail. “We just need to utilize our river a whole lot more than we do,” Tipple said. “A lot of cities would kill to have a river running through their downtown.” ••

As the summer draws to an end, Northwoods residents look forward to the Tomahawk Fall Ride. It draws roughly 40,000 motorcycle enthusiasts from cities and towns throughout the country. Thousands of bikes line Wisconsin Avenue for the yearly festival, which includes music, children’s activities and food. The September festival also serves as an economic boost to the community, said Tamara Anderson, executive director for the Tomahawk Regional Chamber of Commerce and one of the event’s organizers. Riders eat at local restaurants and shop in area stores. “It’s huge for Tomahawk,” Anderson said. “That money trickles down to the community.” The Fall Ride will be held Sept. 14 to 18. NEW THIS YEAR In addition to the annual established events, Lincoln County residents will experience a new event this year. The Tomahawk Chamber will hold a 5k run in June. Money raised through the Rockin’ Tomahawk 5K HalfMarathon will benefit the Chamber. Organizers hope to garner enough support for the run that it will become a yearly tradition in Tomahawk. Go to www.active.com to register; call 715-453-5334 for more information.
FAIR TIME For 16 years, Van Vanderkam has coordinated about 80 vendors who sell crafts, food and jewelry at the fair, which is held in July on the fairgrounds, 2001 E. Third St., Merrill. Each year, about 35,000 people from Lincoln County and surrounding communities attend the free, five-day festival, Vanderkam said. There also will be professional bull riding, a demolition derby and a pigcatching contest. This year’s fair will be held July 20 to 24. Church Mutual and Beans & Barley, Kinsey said. The rise in business is complemented with road renovations, the addition of a roundabout in downtown Merrill and the completion of renovations to the Lincoln County Courthouse building in Merrill. But more work is needed. Merrill Mayor Bill Bialecki said city officials are working to renovate the downtown area through grant applications and partnerships. The city also is working to acquire the dilapidated Lincoln House building on South Mill Street. Currently, the building houses residents and two businesses. But renovations are needed to restore the historical building. The city plans to keep the residential units on the top floors and the businesses on the bottom level. “It’s registered with the historical society as a historical site. We want to revamp it,” Bialecki said. The city also wants to revitalize the business district on Merrill’s west side. Bialecki said the city intends to revitalize the area to draw new businesses there. Currently, a lot of storefronts are empty in that neighborhood, he said. The effort would establish a new Tax Increment Financing district to bring renovations to the area, Bialecki said. Property taxes from the district are used to fund developments within the TIF district. ••

More businesses in the Merrill area reported higher earnings this year compared with 2007 when the recession began, Kinsey said. But specific earnings figures were not available. Ye Olde Shoppe is among the success stories in Merrill. Owners Dennis and LuAnn Grefe expanded their business, Aunt Lu’s Antiques, last year to include Ye Olde Shoppe, a store that sells homemade chocolate, fudge and other sweets. “We took a chance,” Dennis Grefe said. The candy portion of the business on Main Street has received so much business that the Grefes added new cooking equipment and expanded indoor space at the shop to accommodate customers, Dennis Grefe said. Ye Olde Shoppe is not the only example of success. Several area companies have seen a rise in business, including Lincoln Wood Products, which reported higher earnings this year, Kinsey said. Kinsey was interviewed before an April 10 tornado damaged one of Lincoln Wood’s properties, but company officials expected to recover quickly. Also, Zastrow The Beer Man, a beer, soft drinks and water distributor, moved the company’s distribution center to Merrill, Kinsey said. Other businesses completed renovations this year, including Dave’s County Market, Rezin Optical,
