Habitat for Humanity - Oshkosh

Surprisingly Habitat Oshkosh does not have a long waiting list of families and is currently accepting applications for homes that will be built this year. Readers are asked to pass this information on to your work place, neighbors, anyone that you think might have a need or know of someone that has a need for this program. Habitat Oshkosh serves people who live or work in Oshkosh who meet three basic criteria; Need for adequate housing, ability to pay, and willingness to partner.

In August 2010, Habitat Oshkosh growth enabled them to build a ReStore at 640

S. Koeller Street and things continue to be positive at their 6 month milestone.

Volunteer opportunities at ReStore and Habitat builds are ongoing throughout the year. Currently, Cashiers are needed for ReStore’s weekday and weekend morning and afternoon shift s. Volunteer needs at the build site will be announced on the website, www.habitatoshkosh.org, when the build schedule is created. Donate to Habitat for Humanity at the WHBA Home & Garden Show and enjoy free admission – visit the Habitat and ReStore booths as well! Donations to help Habitat Oshkosh achieve their ambitious goal are always welcome.

In April, Habitat Oshkosh will complete its 20th home – a bi-level ranch for an Oshkosh family of seven. Homeownership is the answer to this family’s prayers.

Tree planting requires planning, selection and care ● Trees can affect everything from your heating and cooling bills to your resale value – some surveys have put this increased value in the range of 10 to 15 percent. Trees can produce shade, food, firewood or just a beautiful scene.

They can also attract birds and other wildlife.

at the base of a tree for several hours will permit the water to soak deep into the soil and encourage deep rooting.

This will give the tree a better chance of surviving drought.

● Location on your property is another important consideration. Choose spots with adequate sunlight and water, and make sure the trees are protected from possible pests. A mesh fence can do much to prevent animals from injuring your saplings. Try to estimate how long the tree will take to become fully grown and what the tree will look like at full size.

● Many personal decisions go into tree planting. In areas with hot summers and cold winters it is best to plant deciduous trees. These trees will provide shade in the summer but will allow desired sunlight to pass through in the colder months. Some trees are better than others for providing a buffer against noise and unwanted views.

Also, personal expectations should be considered.

● Trees are most vulnerable in their first years of life and should be tended with special care. Newly planted trees should be watered deeply and on a regular basis. Allowing a hose to drip

It’s always a great time to fill the shelves at the Salvation Army of Oshkosh Food Pantry. Bring non-perishable food items for the Salvation Army and your admission is free to the 2011 WHBA Home & Garden Show held March 11-13 at Sunnyview Expo Center in Oshkosh.

The Salvation Army of Oshkosh Food Pantry fights hunger in the Oshkosh area by assisting their clients with substantial grocery supplements for their households. By supplying this aid to

local families in need, they encourage healthier lifestyles, better nutrition and household budget assistance through reduced food costs.

You can reduce your energy use and start lowering your bills by making some simple changes around your home.

These energy-saving tips cover practically everything that uses energy in your home.

These days, energy management tops the list of desired features in new homes, according to a survey by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). More and more, home buyers are looking for ways to incorporate home technologies that increase the long-term value of their house but also provide convenience, safety and comfort.

NAHB’s consumer preferences survey of more than 2,300 recent and prospective home buyers examined the features, products, amenities and layouts preferred in a new home.

Energy-Saving Tips

In the home technology features category, the number one choice among respondents was energy management at 61 percent – up from 45 percent in 2004. Also ranked highly in this category were multi-zone heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), lighting controls and home theatres.

Staying in the home technology features category, three of the top five most-wanted technology features — energy management, HVAC and lighting control — also provide energy-efficiency. By incorporating the following technologies, home owners can save money on their utility bills: ● Automated HVAC systems can maintain a more energy-efficient temperature while the home owners are away at work, but switch to a more comfortable temperature prior to their arrival home. ● Tankless water heaters — which save energy by heating water only when needed — are comparable in cost to traditional gas water heaters but are 30 percent more efficient, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

● Lighting can make up 10 to 20 percent of the total electrical usage of the home. Installing an automatic dimmer, which adjusts to the home owner’s needs based on time of day or occupancy, will lower electricity bills and increase the life expectancy of light bulbs. ● Blinds and drapes can be programmed to close during the hottest part of the day to block out the sun; keeping the house cooler. In the colder winter months, they can open up to allow the sun in to warm the house, which helps regulate the room temperature.

By incorporating technologies that help make your home operate more efficiently, Energy Star estimates that home owners can save $200 to $400 annually on their energy bills.

Heating Tips

Whether it’s putting on a sweater instead of turning

up the heat or seeking out the advice of an expert, it’s easy to conserve energy: ● Lower your thermostat. Lowering the thermostat by as little as 1 degree Fahrenheit can make a difference. A thermostat setting of 68 degrees Fahrenheit is often recommended. ● Switch to a programmable thermostat.

A programmable thermostat automatically lowers the temperature when no one is home, as well as overnight. This could save you as much as 20 percent on heating costs. ● Tune up your heating system. Have your heating system tuned and inspected by a service professional annually. ● Clean your furnace filter monthly. A clean filter helps your furnace run more efficiently. ● Keep doors closed. Minimize the number of times that doors to the outside are opened and closed. ● Seal ducts properly. Leaks can develop in air ducts over time. Sealing these leaks can reduce heating costs.

● Use curtains and blinds wisely. Open curtains and blinds during the day to let in the heat from the sun. Close them at night to retain heat. ● Don’t send heat up the chimney. Make sure your fireplace flue is closed when you are not using it.

● Install ceiling fans. Ceiling fans set at slow speed push warm air away from the ceiling and move it around the room making you feel more comfortable.

● Insulate your attic. Make sure your attic is properly insulated. Adding fiberglass insulation in your attic is one of the most cost-effective savings measures and one you can do yourself. ● Seal windows. Seal windows with caulk or weatherstripping.

● Add storm windows. If your home is equipped with single-pane windows, adding storm windows can improve energy efficiency greatly.

Thanks to Lowe’s, kids attending the WHBA Home & Garden Show March 11-13 will be able to build their very own Lowe’s Kids Project at the Show again this year. Volunteers will be on hand to assist.

From project basics to giving your child the opportunity to say “I built it!”, Lowe’s Build and Grow Kid’s Clinics are a great way to help build confidence! When building a FREE wooden project, each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project themed patch, and a certificate of merit upon completion of their project. It is a great way for moms and/or dads to do something fun with their kids!
