Every day, hundreds of volunteers throughout Portage County give of their time and expertise to make this community great, and National Volunteer Week is our opportunity to recognize how these amazing volunteers LIVE UNITED! The Volunteer Center and Stevens Point Journal, along with our partner programs, are proud to present this publication highlighting the extraordinary effort of volunteers in our community. Aging and Disability Resource Center of Portage County Because of volunteers, the ADRC is able to

ful¿ll its mission to support seniors, adults with disabilities and their families and caregivers by fostering a caring community that values lifelong contributions, maximum independence and individual dignity. ADRC volunteers provide rides to medical appointments, serve meals at congregate nutrition sites, deliver meals to homebound individuals, lead classes at Lincoln Center and throughout the community, serve as clerks/cashiers and help with special events at the Holly Shoppe, assist with activities in the Adult Day Center, provide telephone reassurance to people who live alone, maintain loan closet equipment, provide of¿ce assistance and serve in leadership roles on program advisory councils and boards. Almond Bancroft School District The volunteers who dedicate their time, energy, and spirit are the people who allow the Almond-Bancroft School District to be as successful as it is today. The meaningful programs and opportunities that our students and community members take part in is made possible because of volunteers who care.

Some of the opportunities that have taken place this year are the Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, student government, elementary and middle school reading help, babysitter training, transportation, holiday events, guest speakers, dances and so much more. It’s also due to the leadership of our ¿ne volunteers, as well as the Partners In Education and the Booster Club that has given our area a spark to move forward as a caring community.

Boys and Girls Club of Portage County Volunteering is the backbone of the Boys & Girls Club Organization. Without volunteers it would be impossible to offer the wide range of programs that are run every day. The volunteers that come to the club form special relationships with the members and become role models that the members look up to and depend on. Volunteers make it possible for the members to get the one on one time that they need and deserve.

Volunteers are the very heart of CAP Services’ Early Childhood Development program. Parent and Community volunteers contributed 99,304 hours in the 2009 program year. This generous donation of time and talents enables us to continue to provide comprehensive, quality Head Start services to 363 families in our four county areas. We sincerely thank our dedicated volunteers and honor the important role they play in enhancing the lives of children and families.

CAP Services Family Crisis Center and SAVS Program

“Thanks” to volunteers, CAP Services’ Family Crisis Center and Sexual Assault Victim Services are able provide: 24/7 response to the emergency room referrals of victims, co-facilitated peer support groups for both domestic and sexual violence survivors, a children’s support group, a full pantry for shelter clients and a successful annual 5K fund raising event. In addition, we have advisory board volunteers who help support our programs and connect us with a caring community that: makes donations to support women and children as they move into transitional living; provides gas and grocery cards to help clients access needed community services, and provides meals and food. Thank you to the men, women and children who volunteer their time and resources to the Family Crisis Center and SAVS Program, making it possible for those leaving a violent situation to have a safe place to go.

Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes

Community Partners

Because of our fabulous volunteers, our organization is able to bring Girl Scouts to all girls in Portage County and to nearly 20,000 girls in our council jurisdiction. Without the energy and enthusiasm from our great volunteers, this would not be possible. Our Girl Scout volunteers come from all walks of life. Some are stay-at-home or working moms and dads who want more quality time with their daughters. Many are grandparents or retirees. Others are professional women or college students who may not have daughters, yet know the value of the Girl Scout experience. The expertise, interests, skills and life experiences of volunteers are essential to shaping fun and enriching leadership experiences for girls, and inspiring them to reach their personal best.

SPASH Partners at Lambeau Field

Because of Volunteers… Community Partners creates and supports matches between developmentally disabled adults and students with volunteers/mentors from the community and school. At Stevens Point Area Senior High, 25 special education students are paired with 25 regular-education peer mentors for recreation, advocacy, companionship and support. The students meet regularly for lunch, educational ¿eld trips, sporting events, plays and concerts. Now in its seventh year, the program continues to attract motivated, enthusiastic student-mentors whose capacities for outreach are remarkable and heart-warming. The caring nature of the students for each other continues to inspire and delight parents, teachers and all who witness the group together in action. The special-education students share an enthusiasm for life, a need to reach full potential, and a desire to be accepted, nurtured and valued in society. Through relationships with new trusted partners in school, they experience growth, enhanced con¿dence, and the overall joys only new friends can bring.

Central Wisconsin Habitat for Humanity What do volunteers do for CWHfH? Everything! Our volunteers are our backbone. We have helped over 20 families become homeowners, and we couldn’t have done it without our legion of volunteers. Ice Age Trail Alliance Portage County Chapter The Portage County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance was formed, and has been supported by volunteers, since 1982. Our volunteers work to create, support and protect 13 miles of trails running from Emmons Creek south of Hartman Creek State Park, to the intersection with the Waupaca County segment near Sunset Lake. We would like to extend a special thanks to all of the volunteers who help make it possible to enjoy the beautiful scenery of Portage County by hiking the Ice Age Trail.

Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Because of Volunteers Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers helps the elderly and people with disabilities enjoy independence by providing traditional program services including: transportation, errands and in-home assistance. Recently, volunteers helped Interfaith expand services to provide time away for caregivers of loved ones with memory loss, snow removal, and news on disc for visually impaired individuals. The caring hearts and dedicated minds of our fabulous volunteers make all this possible. Thank you so very much!

Junior Achievement of Wisconsin Because of over 120 volunteers in Portage and Wood Counties, we are able to offer Junior Achievement programming to over 4,160 students, in 216 classrooms, in 36 different schools, working with 180 area teachers. Thank you for helping us inspire our young people to succeed in the global economy by helping them learn skills in ¿nancial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.

Justiceworks LTD With the generous support of our volunteers, we are able to carry out our mission to foster forms of justice that strengthen and heal the communities of Central Wisconsin. Volunteers working as mentors in the Volunteers in Probation program help misdemeanor offenders make needed lifestyle changes to break the cycle of recidivism. Volunteers working in the Family Law Information Center provide court process information to members of the community without legal counsel needing assistance with divorce, child support, and other family law matters. Volunteers working as mediators in the Restitution Mediation Project and Restorative Youth Conferencing program help victims and offenders resolve conÀict peacefully, without the need for court intervention. Volunteers working in Community Education and Outreach programs help bring education on justice issues to the community and, in addition to our direct service programs, provide opportunity for community involvement through events such as the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration, and the annual Just Run ¿tness run/ walk fundraising event. We could not provide community support in these areas without our dedicated, concerned and caring volunteers. Thank you to all!

Because of volunteers we are able to deliver hot nutritious meals to the elderly and disabled in the Stevens Point area. These volunteers deliver meals in all kinds of weather; providing a cheerful smile and daily personal contact to each meal recipient.

To say that volunteers are the heart of the organization is to say it all. The Mobile Pantry volunteers that come faithfully on Thursdays to sort fresh produce, pack non-perishable food, restock the pantry shelves, and spend hours on the road delivering these bags of food to our rural residents, are indeed dedicated and caring individuals.

We work together as a family toward a common goal: To provide nourishing food for our clients, as well as some comfort in knowing that we care. A big “Thank You” to each of our volunteers, you share a special gift with us. This gift is of your time and of yourselves. We are so proud of our Pantry. NAMI volunteers go out into the community to give “In Our Own Voice” presentations to such audiences as law enforcement personnel, mental health service providers, educators, and all people wanting to learn about mental illness. Others take the training required to become Peer to Peer mentors and lead a 9 week course designed to help participants learn to live well with mental illness. Dedicated volunteers also provide leadership for our af¿liate, manage our ¿nances, contact speakers and plan informational meetings, raise funds and write the grants needed to hold our classes and programs, and work to reduce stigma. We are grateful for our dedicated leadership and we applaud the many hours given by our volunteers!

NAMI Because of volunteers, we - NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Portage/Wood Counties af¿liate - are able to offer support, education, and advocacy to people living with serious mental illness in our community. Our volunteers publish and mail the NAMI Portage/Wood Counties newsletter to over 400 family members, consumers and providers each month, informing them of area mental health issues and opportunities. Nearly 200 others receive this information via e-mail, sent by volunteers; many others get information about us from our web site: www.namiportagewoodcounties. org, developed and maintained by volunteers. Our NAMI volunteers are trained as support group facilitators for family member and consumer support groups; volunteers also train to teach NAMI’s 12 week Family to Family and six week Basics courses, helping many people in our area to deal more effectively with

Volunteers are the backbone of the American Red Cross. Volunteers constitute 96 percent of our total work force to carry on our humanitarian work. Portage County 4-H Youth Development Because of Volunteers, we have over 300 youth in the Portage County 4-H program who are giving back to their community by volunteering time, funds, and resources. Examples: visiting senior centers; Bell Ringing; roadside clean-up, Make a Difference Day; Empty Bowls; Bowl for Kids Sake; Operation Bootstrap; and Special Olympics. Portage County Alliance for Youth Portage County Alliance for Youth is an all-volunteer organization of schools, churches, youth groups and individuals who care about youth and their development. The group was formed 25 years ago to help schools and youth develop prevention strategies for avoiding alcohol and other drug issues. The group now also works to promote positive youth development programs such as MORP, a drug-free party after high school prom. PCAY also promotes programs in the community on building assets in youth and provides a speakers bureau with topics related to prevention education. Volunteers for the program consist of 24 Active Board Members and 40 Email Members. Youth in Portage County are truly enriched by the services of our volunteers.

Portage County Cultural Festival

The Portage County Cultural Festival (PCCF) made its debut in 1992 in the P¿ffner Park with all activities taking place in 3 giant tents. Weather considerations persuaded organizers to move the event into SPASH (Stevens Point Area Senior High) in its third year, where it has been held ever since, with attendance steadily growing and exceeding 14,000 this past year. The growing community ownership of this event has enabled the organizers to continue to invite quality entertainers and yet keep the PCCF a “free admission” event.

The PCCF is a non-pro¿t organization run by a planning committee consisting more than 30 community volunteers who meet year round, culminating in the annual Festival. More than 400 volunteers are needed for set-up and on Festival day.

The Festival features ethnic foods, arts, crafts, exhibits, and entertainment which showcase the cultures of Portage County. The Festival is supported by generous in kind and cash contributions which keeps it the largest cultural festival in Wisconsin w/free admission.

As our volunteers know, Humane Society staff count on them to assist with the responsibilities that our schedules don’t allow us. They are the agency’s most devoted and enthusiastic kitty cuddlers and dog walkers, spending countless hours with the animals in our care to assure that they are not only physically but emotionally content. They are our housekeeping crew, helping to make sure the facility is Humane Society Volunteers

clean and sanitary for our animals and guests. They are crucial to the continued health and well-being of our animals.

Portage County Public Library

Because of Volunteers, we have a brighter, fresher Portage County Public Library, both literally and ¿guratively. Our volunteers are willing to take on messy tasks.

The Library can be a DIRTY place. That state of many of the books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, ect. after numerous checkouts, can be just plain disgusting. Our volunteers are willing to clean these items up so that clean materials go back to our patrons. If this isn’t a public service, what is? In addition, our volunteers dust shelves, wipe down tables, and clean around computer areas. Figuratively, they do all their tasks with a smile. They enjoy volunteering at the Library. Our volunteers are eager to learn new things and accomplish their tasks with interest and creativity, even the more tedious projects such as ¿xing barcodes to removable slips, or writing out order cards. They shine when they set up displays or check databases to see if the Library already owns certain materials, or if they need to glean critical details so that we can order the appropriate materials for the Library. Portage County RSVP Because of RSVP volunteers, the community has a corps of over 650 people age 55 and over addressing signi¿cant issues through volunteer service. In 2009, 77 nonpro¿t and public agencies and programs in Portage County utilized RSVP volunteers. Through these agencies the volunteers touch the lives of county residents from birth to old age. Those served include homeless or isolated people, people with Alzheimer’s disease and other acute, chronic and terminal illness, frail older people, low-income families, teen mothers, at-risk youth, juveniles in detention, low-risk offenders and people with physical, cognitive and learning disabilities.

RSVP volunteers are active in Portage County in many diverse areas. Examples are: mentoring youth in the county juvenile detention facility and area junior high schools as well as the local alternative high school, teaching good decision making skills to every second grader in the county using colorful puppets, tutoring elementary school students to strengthen reading skills and promote self esteem, visiting classrooms with dogs and cats so children can read to animals in the Paws for Reading program, assisting older adults in preparing for winter driving through the local Triad Vehicle Winterization Program, providing a telephone safety check and friendly conversation for frail older adults and people with disabilities who live alone, delivering a hot meal to an older adult who is homebound, providing administrative assistance to many nonpro¿t agencies and providing assistance at one-time community events such as the Festival of the Arts, the Portage County Cultural Festival and Wisconsin Special Olympics state games. RSVP volunteers give their most valuable resource their time to improve the lives of county residents. Their dediation, wisdom and experience make a difference in Portage County. Because of volunteers Saint Michael’s Hospital is able to enhance the services not otherwise available. They offer unparalleled enthusiasm and willingness to commit their skills and precious time. They are a valuable extension of our regular staff and have a signi¿cant role in meeting the physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual needs of our patients and families. They contribute greatly to the success of our mission.

St.Vincent De Paul Because of the generous donation of time and talents of our volunteers, the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry and Thrift Store have been able to help residents of our community for over 25 years. Our Pantry has 11 retired volunteers who for over 10 years have helped organize, distribute and pick up food as well as unload trucks. In 2009 our volunteers helped serve over 6750 house holds.Our store volunteers help in many areas such as hanging clothes, processing linens, toys, books and house hold items, cleaning and using their creative talents on store displays. Last year our volunteers contributed over 5700 hours of their time to help us achieve our goals. Thank you to an invaluable group of dedicated volunteers!

Stevens Point Area YMCA Because of Volunteers we are able to offer more, be more, give more. Hundreds of individuals give thousands of volunteer hours to the Stevens Point Area YMCA each year. Every program and activity is impacted by Volunteers. What do YMCA Volunteers do? Serve as youth sports coaches, register and time athletes at the Laura Charneski receives 2009 Youth Volunteer Award Triathlon, rock babies in Toy Room, sell from Teen Director Jamie Linzmeier. concessions at swim meets, fold towels at the front desk, provide leadership through Board membership, cut and haul Christmas trees to raise funds for teen programs, wash windows, lend muscle for spring cleaning, raise funds for the Strong Kids ¿nancial assistance program…..the list goes on and on. Without the generous donation of their time, energy and talents, the Stevens Point Area YMCA could not build Strong Kids, Strong Families, and Strong Communities. Saint Michael’s Hospital Volunteer Program

Because of volunteers we are able to save lives and help others during their time of greatest need. Our group of ¿ne men and women do some of the most dif¿cult volunteer work there is, they save lives anytime day or night.

When someone calls 911 we respond to help. At times this means sacri¿cing time with family, time at work, time studying for school, or even sleep. They commit not only to responding to calls but also to monthly meetings and trainings, they ¿nd time to keep up with continuing education and licensing requirements, all which take more time away from their personal lives. Most of the time this is a thankless job, but volunteers don’t roll out of bed at 3:00am to help some who is sick or has been in an accident for the recognition, they do it because they care. They have amazing, kind, and have giving hearts and knowing that they helped someone in their time of need is the only thanks they need. The Town of Hull First Responders and EMTs are heros. In a hour of need I know they will be there no matter what day or time!

Town of Sharon EMS Our group of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) donates generous amounts of time to our community. Many of us would not think twice to try to squeeze volunteer work into our extremely busy schedules. Yet this group of caring people - Somehow ¿nd a way to do it!

Volunteers have been the heartbeat of Wisconsin Nicaragua Partners (WNP) over the 45 years of humanitarian service to Nicaragua by Wisconsin. Collecting and receiving materials, packing items for shipment and loading shipment containers for transport is an all-volunteer effort for WNP. Grant writing, of¿ce assistance, staf¿ng meetings and the craft shop all require dedicated and energetic volunteers to help WNP achieve its mission of helping others.
