Ella comes to Lake Arrowhead
Ella Fitzgerald’s music will be the theme of a concert June 5 at Lake Arrowhead.
“Forever Ella” is the story of a young girl that went from second-hand clothes to winning the hearts of the world through the love of a song. Destined to become the First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald refused to let the struggles of her childhood or prejudice of her country stand in her way. “Forever Ella” is a musical/narrative journey that will feature musical selections from the greatest composers of the 20th century. Ella’s incomparable style gave life to the music of Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Rogers and Hart, George and Ira Gershwin and many
more. Ella traveled with her music all over the world. Touring in Germany, she forgot the words to Mack the Knife while recording a live album in Berlin. Eloquently, as only Ella could do, she blazed her way to a Grammy award that year for the recording. Ella made lifelong friends with the thousands of children whose lives she enhanced through her contributions to charities. She also had interesting friends including Billie Holiday and Marilyn Monroe. To know Ella was to love her. From Harlem to
the world and back, Ella made an impact with her childlike joy, classic command of her craft and heart of a giant. “Forever Ella” will give you the introduction to the incredibly strong woman behind the music. Her story is inspiring and her music is magic. Joe & Janice is one of Wisconsin’s hottest duos. They have more than 35 years each experience entertaining audiences throughout the state. This group is known for their performances at Wisconsin’s finest clubs, festivals, theaters and conventions including the Kettle Moraine Jazz Festival, headlining the La Crosse Jazz Festival, the EAA Convention in Oshkosh, Milwaukee’s famous “Jazz in the Park” series, the Plymouth Jazz Crawl, Summerfest, Cedarburg Cultural Center and many others. For two years in a row, Joe & Janice has been the main act for the
Wisconsin Epilepsy Foundation’s “Toast of the Town,” Milwaukee’s largest fundraiser. Janice Marie has remained constant in her love for music and people for more than 30 years. She has performed at many area festivals including Summerfest, Bastille Days and Harley Fest. Marie has been featured at the Park East Hotel’s “Jazz on the Roof” series, as well as the Cedarburg Cultural Center and Broadway Baby Dinner Theater. Marie also has been featured on local television, radio stations, and been given the honor to sing the national anthem at numerous sporting events. She describes her performance style as one that includes everything from rock and roll, big band, country and blues to jazz. The show, “Forever Ella,” narrative performance based show on the life of Ella Fitzgerald, the first Lady of Song,
has become one of Marie’s passions. Her CD, “Forbidden Love,” portrays her talents as a composer, arranger, producer and vocalist. The show’s musical director, Joe Scheibinger, is a first-class musician and entertainer. He has opened for many national acts including John Denver, Johnny Rivers and cast members from the “Lawrence Welk Show.” Scheibinger also works with the finest musicians in Wisconsin. Marie and Scheibinger first met on Scheibinger’s radio show “Backstage Live” and have been per-
forming together ever since. Marie and Scheibinger opened for the Tonight Show’s Kevin Eubanks at the Kettle Moraine Jazz Festival, and perform at many other festivals and theater performances all over Wisconsin. Do not miss Marie and Scheibinger perform “Forever Ella” on June 5 at the Lake Arrowhead Golf Club banquet facility. Jennifer Sturgul is the Lake Arrowhead event coordinator. Scholarship fund gets donation The Harold Carter Wildlife Scholarship received a donation of $500 from “Survivor” Heroes vs. Villains star, Stephenie LaGrossa and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher, Kyle Kendrick. The Harold Carter Wildlife Scholarship is a non-profit organization that was created by the family and friends of Harold Carter, whose career in wildlife and natural resources spanned five decades. The goal is to create interest and involvement in conservation by recognizing
and celebrating the career of Harold R. Carter. Harold Carter Wildlife Scholarship Ltd. is not affiliated with the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge or the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, nor does it represent an endorsement of the policies or activities of these agencies. “After hearing about the career that Harold spent in support of wildlife conservation, Kyle and I wanted to help in some way,” said LaGrossa. “Having been on ‘Survivor’ three times,
I’ve seen some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, and most of them are due to the efforts of conservation and wildlife protection.” When asked if the donation was a surprise, Carter said, “It was to me!” “It’s hard to put into words,” Carter said. “The only way it could be any better was if Kyle pitched for the Brewers.” LaGrossa has been in Wisconsin several times. “I visited Juneau County in 2005, just days before I left for Mexico to compete
in ‘Survivor: Guatemala,’ and it was beautiful,” LaGross said. “I’ve been to central Wisconsin a few times and I hope that this scholarship helps a graduating senior keep it that way.” LaGrossa and Kendrick live in Philadelphia and plan to marry in Napa Valley, Calif., this fall. The Harold Carter Wildlife Scholarship is offered to graduating seniors of Necedah Area High School who intend to major in wildlife, conservation or biology. It will bee awarded at
the Necedah Alumni Banquet. To support the scholarship, please visit www.hrcwildlifescholarship.com. Every donation will be used, in its entirety, to fund the scholarship. Please send any written correspondence or donations in the form of a check to: Harold Carter Wildlife Scholarship, Ltd., P.O. Box 331, Necedah, WI 54646. Up, up and away at Space Camp My name is Hailey Smith and I’m in sixth grade. Thanks to Adams County 4-H, I was able to go on a trip to Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. On April 15, of this year, I was packed and ready to head off for Space Camp. Around 11 a.m., everyone got on the coach bus and we started on our way to Alabama. We drove through Illinois and stopped in Indiana to eat at Old Country Buffet. After dinner, we got back on the bus and drove to our hotel and went to bed. When we woke up, we had complimentary breakfast at the hotel, and got
back on the bus. We arrived at Space Camp around noon that day and went to our rooms to unpack. Then everyone gathered on the main level of the building to receive instructions on which team they would be on. I was on Team Casper, and there were a lot of nice people on that team and our counselor was very nice, too. We went on some simulators and learned a lot of very cool facts about space for the next three days we were there. On our last day, we went to the gift shop one last time and had an hour to do whatever we wanted; then
it was time to say good-bye to Space Camp and get on the bus. Next, we drove to Sci-Quest, also in Huntsville, and did lots of cool activities and experiments. Around dinner time, we left and started on the long ride back home. The trip was very fun to go on. Hailey Smith, is a member of the Adams County Firecrackers 4-H Club.
