Annual Wisconsin Firefighters Memorial Service. Statewide observance and memorial for fallen firefighters.

The event kicks off with a gathering of friends, food, and fire trucks followed by memorial tours, a memorial service and the procession of vehicles that evening. Nekoosa Giant Pumpkin Festival, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Growers from across the state travel to Nekoosa one weekend each year to weigh their giant pumpkins for international competition, including weigh-ins for other fall produce such as squash and watermelons. Nekoosa’s GIANT Pumpkin Festival also features crafts, flea market, farmers’ market, antique tractors, kids’ games, giant pumpkin drop, bake-off, pumpkin boat races, car show, entertainment and much more. Adams County photo winners announced The winners of the third annual Adams County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism photo contest have been announced.

Photos from the contest were taken from Aug. 1, 2009, to July 31, 2010. First-, second- and thirdplace winners were selected from two categories: 18 and younger and 19 and older.

Dyracuse: A destination point for fun, future expansion

By Deb Cleworth For Lake Country Snapshots ROME — Hot and sweaty, their faces covered with dirt that snuck in under their helmets, members of the Trek World Racing Team were all smiles Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010.

There also were smiles — without the dirt — on the faces of Rome residents, when they thought about the exposure the racers’ visit to Dyracuse Recreation on Area could bring.

Season preview: Adams-Friendship still moving forward

By Michael Kommer For Lake Country Snapshots ADAMS — After back-to-back seasons with less than desired results, the Adams-Friendship football team is looking to right the ship.

The Green Devils welcome back a solid group of experienced offensive and defensive linemen, along with players at several others at key positions.

“Over the past two seasons, we have gone 4-14 and missed the playoffs both years,” A-F coach Jim Kuchta said. “In the 10 years before this we only missed the playoffs p y once.

“We had very hard hitting lines last year, and we are hoping they can continue that,” Kuchta said.

“We have to be more physical and aggressive on defense to

On offense, AdamsFriendship will have to replace leading rusher Steve Kogle, who paced the team with 525 yards on 87 carries and one touchdown.

Looking to fill the void for the Green Devils will be seniors Nick Davis, Chase Schwersenska and junior D.J. Baggs who all saw time in the backfield last season. A-F will also be breaking in a new starting quarterback in Kincaid Hodkiewicz, who also saw playing time last year tossing for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Juneau County seeks forestland trade with cranberry grower five parcels of land, totaling 480 acres, from the grower — Cranberry Creek Cranberries of Necedah.

The county lands are located in sections 20 and 29 of the town of Armenia.

Cranberry Creek intends to use these lands to expand its cranberry marsh operations.

The 480 acres to be received in trade are currently owned by Cranberry Creek.

Three parcels, totaling 400 acres, are located in the town of Armenia, and two parcels totaling 80 acres are located in Section 20 of the town of Lemonweir.

In addition, Juneau County will retain timber rights on 160 acres of the county land being traded until Nov. 1.

The proposed action is not anticipated to result in significant adverse environ-

mental effects. The state Department of Natural Resources has made a preliminary determination that an environmental impact statement will not be required.

Season preview: Nekoosa returns core from SCC champions

By Michael Kommer For Lake Country Snapshots NEKOOSA — After winning its first conference title in 10 years, the Nekoosa football team is poised to defend the league crown.

The Papermakers return four players from last season that received all-South Central Conference recognition as well as several others who saw playing time.

“I think we can defend the conference title,” Nekoosa coach Scott Hilber said.

“Last year I thought the conference was anyone’s to take, and I feel we flew under the radar and no one thought we’d win it, but we have a bullseye on our backs this year.”

Leading the Papermakers in their title defense is 2009 offensive player of the year Austin Kukulka.

Kukulka led the conference with 106 carries, tallying 669 yards and scored seven touchdowns. Austin also received first team-all conference honors as a defensive back.

Solidifying the offensive attack is Tanner Lieber, who rotated with Kukulka, receiver Tyler Solberg and linemen Derek Martinson, Kaleb Reichert and Billy

“I’m really feeling good about our offense this year,” Hilber said. “We have a lot of talent returning at key skill positions and the kids are really looking good.”

The defense, however, has a few noticeable holes to fill.

“Everyone loves offensive games, but I have always been

one that believes in the saying that defense wins championships,” said Hilber.

“We have two huge holes to fill with Ben (Tenpas) and Gair (Walta) graduating, but we have the talent to help fill them.”

Nekoosa does welcome back their entire secondary, and five of their front eight saw playing

With everything the Papermakers do return, Hilber is confident his team will find success, but also is aware there are some unknowns in the conference and potential injuries can impact their bid to repeat as champions.

“When you win the conference and have a target on your back, some teams fold, but with how hard the guys worked this off season, I couldn’t be more proud,” said Hilber. “We know we’re not the perennial power in the conference.”
