Here comes autumn of pictures to share in our upcoming issues. Speaking of future issues, our next Lake Country issue (published Sept. 17) will cover October and November. Our December holiday issue will publish Nov. 19. Now is the time to gather up all those summer memories

— and pictures — and send them in to Lake Country Snapshots. Summer vacations, days at the lake, cook-outs and even a day at the golf course. And of course, the start of school is just around the corner (Check out the Adam-Friendship sports schedules). Why not share those

precious, first-dayof-school pictures? As the season changes, grab that camera on a walk through the woods and capture the colorful scenery. If you’re looking for something to do, look no further than this month’s calendar. And, if you have an event coming up in October,

Necedah National Wildlife Refuge again is privileged to award two artistin-resident positions for the 2010 year to painter and illustrator Caren Hackman from Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. and poet Kathleen Heideman from Marquette, Mich. Hackman began her residency on July 27, where she has immersed herself in the distinct light and texture of the National Wildlife Refuge landscape, in sharp contrast to South Florida where she has painted for the past two decades. “Hackman’s primary subject is landscapes which I have assured her that Necedah has one of the unique land-

As Hackman’s residency ends, Kathleen Keideman’s will begin. “The artist-in-residency is clearly an attractive volunteer opportunity as evident from the applications Necedah National Wildlife Refuge received this year,” Peterson

said. The artist-in-residency program was established in 2007 to provide visual and performing artists an opportunity to interpret the meaning of the refuge through their particular art form. All forms of art are considered except those that manipulate or disturb the Refuge’s environment. No stipend is available for artists participating in the program. Since its inception, painters, writers

and photographers have applied to the program, using the refuge for inspiration. All of these artists translate the purpose of these public lands — as special places that bring others an experience they may never visit. For information on how to apply to the residency program please visit the Refuge website atwww. fws.gov/midwest/ necedah or by phone at 608-565-2551. Necedah National Wildlife Refuge

Sportsman’s Banquet helps Rome Fire Department Want to come out and have a fun evening? Our fall banquet is scheduled for Sept. 16 at the Rome Municipal Building, 1156 Alpine Drive. The event is a fundraiser for the Rome Fire Department. The money is used to purchase equipment for the department and to purchase educational materials. Our purpose is to train and educate our members and the general public in fire fighting and fire prevention, to acquire and own lifesaving and fire fighting apparatus, equipment and vehicles for use by the fund or by the town of Rome for these purposes, to cooper-

ate with other fire fighter societies, and to advance public relations with governmental agencies and the public in general, to save life, relieve suffering of the injured, and to promote safety in the community. Members of the department attend community functions to assist in any way that we can. We hand out literature and answer questions to the best of our knowledge. We will continue to help in meeting the needs of educating or personnel and the general public in fire prevention and fire safety. Ticket order forms have already gone out, but we maintain a waiting list

to fill any spots that might become available. Those who attended last year’s banquet have the first opportunity to attend again this year. The cut-off for those respondents to be guaranteed a ticket is Aug. 23, at which time we will open up ticket sales to the general public on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would be interested in attending, please contact Steve Scarbury at 715-213-9811. Tickets to the banquet are $75, which includes dinner and either beer or soda. Every guest is guaranteed to win a door prize of which every 10th prize is a gun. The banquet is open to 200 guests and

check-in begins at 5:30 p.m. the night of the event. We have many raffles going on throughout the evening, so bring some spare cash with you. Come for the good time, for good company, or just for the fun of it. Steve Scarbury is an entry-level firefighter and First Responder and has been a member of the Rome Fire Department for more than five years.

Fundraising Funds Some of the equipment purchased over the years includes the following: • Two six-wheel all-terrain vehicles and a trailer to haul them • One utility truck • One pontoon boat, motor and trailer • One Jon boat and motor • One rapid deployment craft for ice rescues • One jaws of life tool • Two rescue and medical training mannequins • Two trailers (wildland fire and hazardous materials) • 24 remote microphones for portable radios • 24 first aid kits for fire fighters • One burn training tower (grant monies were used to complete this purchase) • One splash wall training tower and concrete extrication pad • Nine ice rescue suits

Fishing for sport nets a good time Memorial Day weekend is a time when many boaters hit the water to fish and participate in other recreational activities. Twentytwo Adams County 4-H members had the chance to do just that. The second annual Adams County 4-H carp shoot began at 8 p.m. May 28. We went to the docks where 11 boats were waiting for the youth and adult leaders. After boat assignments were announced and rules were said, it was agreed to be back at the docks at midnight. As generators were started and boats left the dock, a night of learning for some — and practice for others — began. Bowfishing is a sport like no other, as it provides a great challenge for all sportsmen. Although many fish were not taken, it was a great time had by all. A special thank you goes to Kurt Demmerly, Scott Young, Cody Patten, Brad Patten, Michael Erickson, Lewis Hol-

mes III, Greg Johnson, John Cichy, Tony Waltmath, Ron Skirvin, Dan Faretta, and Brandon Cole the boat drivers for donating their time and use of boats. tions. Inda learned the importance in how a building’s construction, specifically windows and insulation, affect how residential and commercial heating and air conditioning systems are sized for each individual building’s needs, and efficiency. He also witnessed how important regular maintenance on

Castle-Rock Triathlon: A runner’s odyssey The American heritage dictionary describes an odyssey as an “extended adventurous voyage or trip.” “Voyage” would be the best way for me to describe my training for the Castle Rock triathalon. I was running one beautiful Sunday with a friend and mentioned that, while I felt strong this summer, I did not feel ready to beat myself up training for another marathon. My friend mentioned the Castle

Rock Tri: If so inclined, you can swim, bike and run. I made by first call on June 9 to Adam County Tourism, after which I was sent an application via e-mail. I looked it over and thought, maybe I can do this. That day, I went and bought a pool pass to swim laps — then thought, who am I kidding? I can only doggy-paddle laps. After watching the swimming form of those taking swimming lessons, I was almost begging lifeguards to help me.

The finall chute Th h off the h event.

Not long after that, I was up to 16 laps. After a week of lap swimming, I made the commitment and signed up for the triathalon. I feel as though I now know every county road in southern Juneau and Adams County. These back roads are perfect for training. There are many little hills designed for the bike and run portion of the race. If you are lucky, you will spot a deer, turkey or an occasional fox providing a pleasant distraction.

Another wave waits to start their swim leg.

The day before the race was upon me, I went to pick up my packet and check out the transition areas where you change from the swim to biking, then from biking to running and you get your own spot. I heard the local high school band playing and I dreamily gazed into the water, visualing myself swimming with ease. As race day approached, I needed to get my race chip and calf marked to indicate the wave I was in so the rescue team can eas-

ily spot you if run into trouble. Once I was in my specified area, I instantly bonded with my competitors, feeling the shared anxiety with theothers in our group. As I strapped on my wetsuit, I looked at the other waves already out of the water. I remembered thinking, this is a doable feat, and I was ready to go. Once in the water, I realized I could do this and the time spent in the pool paid off. The biking portion was beautiful as I

biked past farms on Highways Z and H. As I turned north on 16th, the road was hilly, but luckily, I could focus on the Quincy Bluffs ahead — how bad could that be? Along the way, volunteers cheered the racers along and that support helped me forget the soreness invading my legs. As I entered the bike transition area and put on my running clothes, I was content, knowing I would end the race with my favorite event. The running course was all hills and I

September 2010 • Lake Country SNAPSHOTS 15 ran next to people for encouragement, especially since it was getting hot. The path turned into some woods and past steep stairs. The pack thins at this point, and you are seemingly alone. I visualized a strong finish, crossing the finish line, saying the words: “I was born to do this.” I saved some gas to finish strong, and

crossed the finish line with the words: “I did it, I did it.” As a participant, I want to thank all the wonderful volunteers along the way, Heidi Roekle at Adams Chamber of Commerce and Kevin Beaver, race director. When my friends ask if I would do it again, my answer is quick and simple: “Yes,” I tell them. “Why have you seen

anything posted on the Internet?” Cheryl Toeller, 50, completed the event in just under two hours.

She splits her time between Mauston and the Chicago area. She believes everyone should try participating in a triathlon.

Preserve your garden’s bounty this summer ADAMS — Homecanned spaghetti sauce full of the flavor of garden. Fresh tomatoes — or strawberry jam bursting with fruit at the peak of ripeness. These and other delicious recipes are included in the newly updated Wisconsin Safe Food Preservation series publications from Cooperative Extension. “Preserving food from your garden or orchard can be a good way to combat the rising prices of food at the grocery, and it can be a fun activity for a family,” said Barbara

Ingham, University of Wisconsin-Extension food scientist. “But, if you plan to preserve food for later, be sure to follow researchtested recipes for safe, high quality food that your family will enjoy.” Recipes that are not precise, mentioning a pinch of this ingredient or a pinch of that, recipes that are not tested in a laboratory, or those that contain outdated or inaccurate canning information can result in products that may be unsafe to consume. Ingham offered three

general guidelines for preserving food safely: • Inspect and repair any food preservation equipment at the beginning of the season. Now is a good time to inspect canners or food dehydrators to make sure all equipment is in working condition. Collect approved canning jars and lids for use during the season. Canning jars that use two-piece self-sealing metal lids are recommended. Jars should be free of nicks or scratches. A “must” every canning season

is new flat lids, and metal screw bands that are not bent or rusted can be reused. • Test dial-gauge pressure canners for accuracy. A pressure canner is essential for canning low-acid vegetables, meats, fish and poultry. Pressure canners come with either a dial-gauge or a weighted-gauge. Dial-gauge pressure canners should be tested each year for accuracy. Most county UW-Extension offices offer free dial-gauge testing — call ahead for availability of this service.

A short distance to travel for your summer activities Summer is just about over, but you still have time to relax by one of the many Adams County lakes or just take in an event or two. Don’t want to spend a fortune in gas? Adams County is located just minutes north of Wisconsin Dells and just south of Wisconsin Rapids. There is plenty of water and fun to go around. We boast the second and fourth largest inland lakes in the state of Wisconsin. And there are an additional 25 smaller lakes, ponds and streams. Petenwell and Castle Rock lakes are paradise for boaters and fishing enthusiasts alike. Together, they cover 37,000 acres with miles of shoreline, quiet bays, and access to restaurants and bars from the water. With lakes this large, there is more than enough room for recreational boats, water-skiers, sailboats, wave runners, and fishing boats to find their own spot on the wa-

ter. Those who prefer smaller lakes can explore the other 25 bodies of water that dot the county. From Lake Mason’s 855 acres in the south to the tri-lakes of Lakes Arrowhead, Sherwood and Camelot — who offer a combined 991 acres in the north — and the many other lakes located in between, there is something for everyone. Most lakes have boat launches and several offer sandy beaches where you can relax by the shore. Besides the lakes, Adams County has many other activities to offer. There are six beautiful golf courses in the area including two rated in the top 100 public courses in the nation and the mid-west’s only replica course featuring holes from some of the most renowned courses in the world. You can hike or climb scenic trails or go horseback riding. Explore the 2,400 acres of all-terrain vehicle

trails and the 240acre motorcycle and ATV Park. Be sure to stop and shop for awhile at our area flea markets, garage sales or gift stores. What about taking in a special event? Check the list below, pick out the special events you would like to attend this month. Please contact the phone number or check the website for each event to get more info. Welcome fall and have a ball Fall Ball tickets now are on sale. Those who attended the Black & White Ball in August of 2009 commented on what a beautiful evening the event was. This year’s Sept. 25 ball will feature a delicious meal — a choice of bleu cheeseencrusted, 8-ounce filet; chicken piccata; or two, 4-ounce lobster tails in a very formal setting. The 11-piece, Old Lager Orchestra will entertain

all following dinner and then the dancing begins. This event is open to the public and formal attire is a must. This is a perfect event to end the summer season in style at Lake Arrowhead. Tickets are $40 per person. Contact Jennifer Sturgul at Lake Arrowhead, 715-325-2929 ext. 7 or at laevents@wctc. net for more information and to purchase tickets.
