The Liturgy of the Word The two readers, one of whom carries the Lectionary, and the psalmist come to the Bishop. The Bishop takes the Lectionary and shows it to the people asking that the word of God may resound in this building.

Reading I: Nehemiah 8:1-4a, 5-6, 8-10 Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, which consisted of men, women, and those children old enough to understand. Standing at one end of the open place that was before the Water Gate, he read out of the book from daybreak till midday, in the presence of the men, the women, and those children old enough to understand; and all the people listened attentively to the book of the law. Ezra the scribe stood on a wooden platform that had been made for the occasion. He opened the scroll so that all the people might see it — for he was standing higher up than any of the people —; and, as he opened it, all the people rose. Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God, and all the people, their hands raised high, answered, “Amen, amen!” Then they bowed down and prostrated themselves before the LORD, their faces to the ground. Ezra read plainly from the book of the law of God, interpreting it so that all could understand what was read. Then Nehemiah, that is, His Excellency, and Ezra the priest-scribe and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all the people: “Today is holy to the LORD your God. Do not be sad, and do not weep”— for all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the law. He said further: “Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared; for today is holy to our LORD. Do not be saddened this day, for rejoicing in the LORD must be your strength!”

Psalm: Psalm 84 Holy Is the Temple

Reading II: Ephesians 2:19-22 Brothers and sisters: You are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the capstone. Through him the whole structure is held together and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord; in him you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia

Gospel: Luke 24:35-48 The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them. The Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. -7-

The Prayer of Dedication and the Anointings In the Litany, there are added, at the proper place, invocations of the Titular of the Church, Mary, Seat of Wisdom, and the names of the Saints whose relics are to be deposited: Saints Jean de Brébeuf, Charles Garnier, and Gabriel Lalemant.

According to the tradition of the Roman Liturgy, relics of a Martyr are placed under the altar to signify that the sacrifice of the members (the Church) has drawn its origin from the Sacrifice of the Head (Christ). Gannon is honored to have relics of the North American Martyrs: Saints Jean de Brébeuf, Charles Garnier and Gabriel Lalemant. The following hymn is sung while the relics are placed by the Bishop inside the altar and the aperture is sealed.

The Bishop anoints the Altar with Chrism to make it a symbol of Christ who is called “The Anointed One,” for the Father anointed him with the Holy Spirit and constituted him High Priest who would offer the sacrifice of his life for the salvation of all. The walls of the Chapel are anointed to signify that it is given over entirely and perpetually to Christian worship.

Incense is burned on the altar to signify that the Sacrifice of Christ ascends to God as a pleasing fragrance. It is also a sign that the acceptable prayers of the people rise up to the throne of God. The People of God are incensed as well, for we are the living temple of the Holy Spirit in which each of us is a spiritual altar.

The altar candles are lit and then all the candles in the Chapel are lit, including those at the place where the walls were anointed.
