How to Participate in a Catholic Mass
We’ve provided the following guidance for those who are not familiar with the traditions or symbolism of a Catholic Mass:
SING Music is a wonderful addition to Catholics’ spiritual participation in Mass. Don’t worry if you don’t know the songs, we’ve provided the lyrics for you to follow along.
LISTEN Mass contains two readings from the Bible and a homily from the priest or bishop with connection and meaning to our daily lives.
SIT, KNEEL and STAND The different postures at Mass are meant to help participants stay actively engaged and to reflect respect, humility and reverence. All are welcome to stand, sit or kneel when the assembly does so, but do not feel pressure to do any of these. It is recommended, however, to stand when the assembly stands and sit when they are sitting or kneeling.
COMMUNION In the Catholic tradition, only regularly practicing Catholics may receive the consecrated host. This reflects the belief that the consecrated host is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ and that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the oneness of faith, life and worship.
You may get in line for communion no matter what your faith tradition (or non-tradition). But, instead of receiving the host, put your arm or arms across your chest and the priest will give you a blessing instead of the Eucharist. If you don’t want to get in line, feel free to simply stay at your seat, but be sure to let people by who want to get in line for Communion. You may sit or kneel at your seat during and after the communion procession.
SAY “HELLO” Once Mass is over, Bishop Persico will stay around to greet attendees at the entrance of the Cathedral. If you don’t know him, he is always thrilled to greet people at Mass and would be happy to meet you.

HISTORY This tradition is more than 450-years-old and marks the beginning of the academic year in Catholic universities throughout the world. Students and employees are represented at this gathering to call upon the Holy Spirit for the gift of wisdom. The red vestments worn by the Bishop and the priests signify the honor to the Holy Spirit.
THE MASS This is the central public prayer for Catholics and for any Catholic university such as Gannon. In the readings from Scripture– and in the consecration of bread and wine– we believe that we encounter the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and its transformative power in our lives.
THE BISHOP He is the chief pastor of the Diocese of Erie, the territory that comprises the 13 counties of northwest Pennsylvania. He is also the Chairperson of the University Board of Trustees. His presence is a sign of unity among believers. He wears a distinctive head piece (the miter) and carries a staff (the crosier), which signifies his rank and his leadership in the call to holiness and in governance of the Church.
THE CATHEDRAL The principal church building in a Diocese is a “Cathedral” because it is the church that holds the Bishop’s Chair (Cathedra), a symbol of his authority and leadership of the Diocese. Our Cathedral is under the patronage of St. Peter, the Apostle.

INTRODUCTORY RITES
Holy Wisdom, lamp of learning bless the light that reason lends. Teach us judgment as we kindle sparks of thought your Spirit sends. Sanctify our search for knowledge and the truth that sets us free. Come, illumine mind and spirit joined in deepest unity.
Vine of truth, in you we flourish; by your grace we learn and grow. May the word of Christ among us shape our life, our search to know. Joined to Christ in living, dying, may we help the church convey witness to the saving gospel, bearing fruit of faith today.

PROFESSION OF FAITH
Upon assuming office, the President of a Catholic university makes the Profession of Faith and takes the Oath of Fidelity in the presence of the Bishop. Bishop Persico invites Dr. Iwanenko to lead the assembly in the Symbol of Faith, the Nicene Creed.
President: I, Walter Iwanenko Jr., with firm faith believe and profess each and everything that is contained in the Symbol of faith, namely: I believe in one God, (All) the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Dr. Iwanenko continues with the profession of adherence to the teaching of the Church as handed on by the Magisterium.

OATH OF FIDELITY
With his hand on the Book of the Gospels, Dr. Iwanenko takes the Oath of Fidelity before the Bishop and the assembly. In this oath, the new president, on assuming his office, expresses his commitment to the university’s Catholic identity and his promise to preserve communion with the Catholic Church.
Dr. Iwanenko will sign the Oath of Fidelity, which is then witnessed by the Bishop.
