Chipping away is You won’t necessarily hit PRs every session. The changes in your body won’t always be apparent. But if you keep building that wall, brick by brick, you’ll look up one day in awe at what you created by trusting the process and staying consistent. Brick by brick. Shoutout to @britt.ironsavages.fit for staying consistent through the good and bad days. We see you grinding Britt! Stay with it and THANK YOU for the DAILY DOSE OF MORNING MOTIVATION

POWERLIFTING MEET CHECKLIST Everything you need to know to get ready for your first powerlifting meet.

POWERLIFTING MEET CHECKLIST Everything you need to know to get ready for your first powerlifting meet.

Whether you're heading to your first powerlifting meet or your first meet in a new federation, it's critical to train the way you'll be expected to perform on the platform.

The Number One Thing that trips lifters up on the platform are mental mistakes due to not training the way they'll need to perform on the platform. It's one thing to bench press in your home gym with an environment that's tailored to you.

The Platform Is A Whole Different Ball Game Each federation has rules that are slightly different so in our powerlifting meet checklist we go over federation specific rules as well as general recommendations for before and during the meet.

Don't Leave Anything to Chance From how to set up your phone to check your depth to what to pack in your bag for the meet, to selecting a bench press style that fits you and fits the rules of the federation, we cover it all in the Powerlifting Meet Checklist.

COVER STORY

Lifts

Landri Lifts A Lot! Seriously. This hard charging veteran of the United States Army has been focused on hitting her goals on the platform since crossing over to powerlifting from Crossfit. She recently became the first athlete sponsored by Sisters of Iron and now Landri hit some important milestones at the 2022 Women’s ProAm!

It’s even more remarkable because Landry said that a few months ago she was experiencing severe health problems related to a previously undiagnosed food allergy.

"It was my first pro meet and my first meet ever in wraps so that was like a whole new thing for me," she said. "I PR'd my deadlift, hitting 445lbs and I just found out that for 2022 Women's 181 weight class in wraps, I am top ten!"

BUSY, BUSY, BUSY This feat is even more impressive because in addition to coaching clients and training herself, Landri serves as an admin for the Garage Gym Powerlifting Facebook group recruiting new group members, answering questions and showing trolls and spammers the exit.

“This is the only meet besides DT Nationals 2020 that I didn’t have to water load or deplete myself the week before the meet in order to make weight!!! Competing is already stressful enough and to be able to eat my way to the platform and focus on keeping my head in the game and recovering is such a relief,” Landri said. It’s even more remarkable because Landry said that a few months ago she was experiencing severe health problems related to a previously undiagnosed food allergy. "Last year I was super sick, I was having digestion issues, they were thinking it was stress related and I put on a ton of weight. I blew up to almost 200lbs and I couldn't photo credit: Adam Rivera/Aperture Hour

figure out how to lose it. Normal foods that were my gotos in the past to cut were making me physically ill.

FATEFUL ELEVATOR RIDE Landri credits her nutrition coach, David Spitdowski, Jr. for guiding her through her easiest cut ever while keeping her strength up. "I was competing at the Drug Tested North Americans this past October and I was heading up to the elevator and [David and his wife] were getting off the elevator and we were like 'Hey! We follow each other!' "We started talking and it was like, 'I need to work with him!" Within a few weeks we figured out how to get my body working properly. Over the last six months with him I've lost almost twenty pounds without losing strength! I was still hitting PRs in training!"

EASIEST CUT EVER

"My 445# deadlift for a PR on Pro day at the @2022womensproam is a moment I will never forget and it lit a fire inside me I was struggling to find again! - Landri Peden

Making the top ten in the 181s isn't enough for Landri. Her meet assessment shows the improvements that are left to make. "This was nowhere near my best squat or bench day and that’s okay because you know what I tried something new by squatting in wraps which I didn’t try until the last Wednesday of prep! I smoked my opener at 350lbs so I’d say that’s a win considering I have no idea how to use wraps and almost stood up 395lbs with almost zero rebound. I decided to widen out my stance because I’m not used to a monolift but Man! it was fun and I can’t wait to learn wraps in the offseason! "Bench I smoked my opener of 200lbs and just couldn’t adjust on the Fat Pad bench so that’s all I had yesterday and I’m ok with that!"

Her deadlift was the bright spot that ignited Landri's fire to be on the platform. "My 445# deadlift for a PR on Pro day at the 2022 Women's ProAm is a moment I will never forget and it lit a fire inside me I was struggling to find again!!! I’m back and this offseason is going to bring me back in December stronger than ever!!! "I stepped out of my comfort zone doing a non-tested meet as a tested lifter going up against all time world record holders and I showed I can hold my own!!! I can’t wait for the offseason to really develop even more as a competitor! We will see you on the platform again in December!"

EQUIPMENT REVIEW

Shin Saver? Really?

Stores Easily

Yes, really. Toe raises, shin curls, tibialis anterior raises are one of the best ways to prevent and treat shin splints which a lot of you are going to battle with now that the weather is warming up and your hearts turn fondly to thoughts of jogging, 5ks and obstacle course races.

Space is premium in a home gym and the Shin Saver Bar fits neatly in a corner when not in use.

Made in the USA

The Shin Saver Bar from Gorilla Strength Equipment is the best version of the Tibialis Anterior Bar or Shin Blaster bar that I've found in twenty plus years of doing tibialis anterior raises also known as toe raises.

I'm not against products made overseas if they work and are safe to use but the advantage of the Shin Saver Bar is reduced shipping cost and time because they're made in and shipped from Leitchfield, KY so you don't have to worry about your stuff getting stuck offshore because of dock worker shortages.

Easy to Use

Not Yet Available on Amazon Prime

TLDR

Yes you can do toe raises against a wall or by standing on steps or blocks but they're tough to load and this is an exercise that benefits from external loading. The Gorilla Strength Shin Saver Bar is light and compact plus it uses Olympic plates with no need for an adapter.

One con is that the Shin Saver Bar isn't available on Amazon yet so you can't take advantage of the Amazon shipping services. I've reached out to David at Gorilla Strength and this is in the works but isn't available yet.
