EQUIPMENT REVIEW
The D Handle Bar from GymPin is a multi grip tool that's almost elegant in it's simplicity. Watch my review on YouTube to see my thoughts after playing with it for a couple of months.
COVER STORY
We are heading to Chicago for our first ever
broadcast of the annual Working Class Barbell Meet sanctioned as part of the yearly Garage Gym Competition. Working Class Barbell, a small garage gym owned by Ryan and Julia DiPompeo, is one of several hosting sites for the 2022 Garage Gym Competition and we're excited to be able to stream it for the athletes and their families.
NOT YOUR NORMAL POWERLIFTING MEET Event organizer, Joe Gray, envisioned his competition as something unlike any other powerlifting meet in the world. "You can win awesome stuff from awesome people, companies, and brands, free entry, super easy to participate, you can compete at any time during the week of the event and you can even get your kids, spouses, friends and family lifting" Gray said.
THE ULTIMATE HOME GYM RAFFLE
Besides bragging rights and a chance to show off their year to year improvements, many lifters leap at the chance to add to their home gyms without paying entry fees or most of the costs normally associated with participating in an international strength competition. The prizes are varied and change year to year as more and more sponsors get involved. "We’ve given out prizes like a power rack, rower, bunch of barbells, tons of shirts, banners, storage, supplements and more", Gray said.
OPEN TO ANYONE (WITH A HOME GYM)
While the competition is free to enter, your lifts MUST be completed in a home gym environment. That can be a garage, a basement, a backyard, a barn, a shed, a driveway at someone's home, a spare bedroom the possibilities are endless so long as you compete from a location that Gray terms, "garage gym adjacent". Of course, not everyone has a home gym or has the necessary equipment in their home gym to compete in a powerlifting meet. That's where sites like Working Class Barbell come in. Gray said, "We have had people host Mock Meets at their place, run legit competitions with food vendors and judges, as well as people renting a home gym space through services like [AirGyms], a service like Air BnB but for home gyms".

The Working Class Barbell meet features food vendors, music, competition lights and judges
Ryan and Julia DiPompeo weren't satisfied with simply being another hosting site for the Garage Gym Competition. As veteran competitors in powerlifting, bodybuilding and mixed martial arts as well as coaching a team of successful strength and physique athletes, they wanted to up the ante for the lifters. The Working Class Barbell meet features a full powerlifting lighting set up so a successful lift will be reflected by white lights from the judges just like at a normal sanctioned meet. Like judging at American Idol, the rulings from the judges simply enable the competitors to improve on the platform making this a great dress rehearsal for a sanctioned meet.
WATCH TO CHEER EACH Prizes are awarded in an Open Raffle wherein each sponsor is responsible for donating equipment and products to winners. This allows them to establish a relationship with the home gym owners that hopefully leads to loyal customers in the future. "There are plenty of competitions that reward the biggest and baddest lifters. We wanted something for everyone else. Thus the prizes are handed out in what we call the Open Drawing. Every participant gets a “ticket” for their entry, and every ticket has an equal chance of winning a prize – from the grand prize to the smallest prize offered. Every single prize is available through the Open Drawing," Gray said.
How To Enter
Why You Should Watch
Besides the requirement to compete in a home gym environment there are a few other rules to ensure your lifts are counted.
Our broadcast of the Working Class Barbell Meet is an opportunity to expose the Garage Gym Competition to potential sponsors and educate lifters who may have participated in the Garage Gym Competition earlier in the week, a taste of what attending and competing in an in person meet would be like.
Competitors must have an account on Instagram, Reddit or Facebook and maintain that account until for a few weeks after the competition. That's because before the end of the competition week, each participant must Before the end of the week, upload recorded clips of their best attempts to one of the approved social media sites in one post (either an edited clip of all three together or a carousel post) and include their lift numbers as well as the hashtag #GarageGymCompetition. All numbers must also be entered into the Garage Gym Competition Tracker by each participant as a double layer of protection to ensure that their lifts are counted and they qualify for their raffle ticket.
We want to tear down the perceived barriers to competing that home gym owners erect for themselves and show them that strength sports can be an inclusive, welcoming place for lifters of all ability and strength levels. The Working Class Barbell Meet is a fun way to get that message across while also helping the Garage Gym Competition grow.
