trek of energy

trek of wonders

trek of history

trek of energy Stage 1: Castel Drena - Arco The Castle of Drena overlooks the lunar landscape of the so-called “Marocche, a huge accumulation of rocky material created in the post-glacial period. Leaving the castle behind, we come to the villages of Drena and Drena Bassa, and then

on to the "Sentiero della Maestra" trail, marked 667, which runs through another fascinating area, the Bosco Caproni: an area of great environmental interest, with a wealth of historical and cultural elements. Continuing along this trail half way

up the slopes we reach the Dosso Grande and then descend towards Arco.

Variation in altitude: 300 m Time: 2/3 hours Level: easy

Stage 2: Arco - Canale di Tenno From the centre of Arco, we follow the stations of the cross which lead through the olive grove to the chapel of S. Maria di Laghel (altitude 220 m). We take trail sign 408 to the left and, after about 20 min, trail 407. At Bocca di Tovo we take trail 409, which joins trail 401 and then skirts

Monte Calino (1069 m) with only slight variations in altitude before arriving at the S. Pietro mountain refuge. From here we follow trail 401 down to the atmospheric medieval village of Canale, with its narrow cobbled streets, porticoes and inner courtyards.

Variation in altitude: 800 m Time: 3/5 hours Level: average

Stage 3: Canale di Tenno - Riva del Garda From Canale di Tenno, along trail 406 it is just a few minutes to Lake Tenno. Turning left here anticlockwise, we take the road leading towards Campi (668 m). Trail 402, which branches off to the right, leads to Bocca di Trat at 1581 m and the Nino Pernici mountain refuge. From here

trail 413 on the left leads up to Dos dei Seaoi (1798 m) and then continues along a level stretch to Bocca di Saval (1720 m). The trail now continues with only slight changes in altitude along the top of the rocky crests overlooking Riva del Garda, 1200 m below.

The descent, along trail 404, is strenuous but magnificent.

Variation in altitude: 1400 m Time: 6/7 hours Level: advanced

Stage 4: Riva del Garda - Altissimo We follow the footpath leading along the shores of Lake Garda to Torbole. From the centre of the town, we climb towards the Parco delle Busatte. Trail no. 601 climbs gradually but steadily over the lake and past Malga Zures near Dos dei Frassini (707 m) and Malga Casina (930

m), before rising steeply towards Monte Varagna (1779 m). The trail then leads along a magnificent ridge via Monte di Nago (1875 m), and finally reaches the summit of Monte Altissimo at 2053 m, which allows one of the most magnificent and sweeping views in all of the Alps. Just

a few minutes away the Damiano Chiesa mountain refuge, at 2059 m, offers a chance for a well-earned rest.

Variation in altitude: 1800 m Time: 6 hours Level: advanced

trek of wonders “Old Ponale Road” Path (Riva del Garda)

TREKKING / NORDIC WALKING

One follows via Gargnano from the centre of Riva towards Limone. On the right side, before the tunnel, starts the “old Ponale road” path which is now a cycle/pedestrian path; from there one can enjoy a marvellous view over Lake Garda. After the statue of “Regina Mundi”, where we find a natural balcony, a ledge of rock prac-

tically overhanging the lake at a unique scenic point, the trail then leads on to the heart of the little village of Pregasina, on its rocky perch above Lake Garda (6 km). An alternative route takes the “old Ponale road” trail to Lake Ledro at the turnoff for Pregasina (from the turnoff: approx. 2 hours - 6 km).

Time: approx. 2 hours Level: easy

Busatte Park-Tempesta (Torbole sul Garda) From the heart of Torbole sul Garda a road climbs to Parco delle Busatte on the slopes of Monte Baldo (about 30 minutes). From the Park’s grassy area we head off for a spectacular hike along the Busatte–Tempesta trail, a nature route overhanging the lake which winds for 4 km and includes flights of metal stairs

with a total of 400 steps. The route is mostly level with two climbs: Corno di Bò and Salt de la Cavra. This 90 minute hike through wonderful scenery, leading right above the lake in the midst of nature, flowers and geological phenomena, leads us to Tempesta. From here the trip back to Torbole can be

made aboard a bus of the A.P.T.V. line.

biotope. The landscape undergoes extreme and surprising changes: the visitor crosses a lunar and sometimes even desert landscape, walking from the great pile of rocks to the area where dinosaur tracks were recently discovered; from here the trail leads on through a wooded

area to the Sarca river and the old hydroelectric station of Fies. From here we continue along the edge of the marshy Laghi Soli area to enter the rocky, arid biotope again and return to our point of departure.

Time: approx. 2 hours Level: moderate

Marocche Biotope (Dro) The “Marocche” biotope, a huge accumulation of rocky material created in the post-glacial period, is in the area to the north of Dro. The points of entry to the area are signposted to the left beyond Maso Trenti on the road leading from Dro to Drena. Signage bears the logo of the

Time: approx. 2.30 hours Level: easy

The Giants’ Pots (Nago-Torbole) Walking this kettle-holed landscape, the visitors might think they were on the surface of the moon. The Marmitte dei Giganti, or Giants’ Pots, are formed by meltwater which plummets into crevasses forming whirlpools which have slowly eroded the rock. The principle holes can be reached by branching off left from the

main Torbole to Nago road, or along a trail leading from the end of the Via Strada Granda in Torbole (1.5 km).

Time: approx. 1 hour Level: easy

Bosco Caproni (Arco) You can reach the access to the Bosco Caproni, nearby the village of Massone di Arco, following the signpost for Falesia di Policromuro to the car park. Amidst statuary stone quarries and uncontaminated nature, this is the ideal surroundings for reclaiming your spirit. An area of great environmental interest, rich in histori-

cal and artistic findings, with “natural art works” which are part of the “Sculpture Park Drena 3000” permanent exhibition. The vegetation is chiefly characterised by holm oak, black pine and chestnut woods. There are over 400 species of flora, and over 100 varieties of animal species. There are numerous geological findings repre-

senting vestiges of glaciations and karst phenomena.

Time: approx. 1.30 hours Level: easy

trek of history: the emperor’s fortresses 1) Riva del Garda: the Monte Brione forts In 1852, the General Staff of the AustroHungarian Empire started building forts to guard the northern coast of Lake Garda, calling it the “Festung Abschnitt” i.e. the fortified sector of Riva del Garda. Mount Brione stands at the centre of this network of forts: Fort S. Nicolò (1860-1862) is close

to the lake, Fort S. Alessandro (1881) is on the mountain’s peak, Fort Batteria di Mezzo (1900), Fort Garda (1907). The location also preserves the visible remains of the communication trenches, observation posts, combat trenches and military roads. The itinerary starts at Port S. Nicolò

in Riva del Garda and proceeds along the Peace Path.

Variation in altitude: 300 m Time: 2 hours 15 minutes Level: T (for everyone)

The climb to the Rocca peak (Cima Rocca) is one of the most interesting itineraries for pundits of field fortifications built during the war, where you can admire the breathtaking view of Lake Garda: the tunnel system “Alto Garda” on Sperone. Starting in Biacesa, the itinerary climbs up to the Caregna junction and then turns onto the mule path posted as SAT No. 417

up to the small church of S. Giovanni. By following the Rocca path you reach the entrance to the first tunnel; the tour continues along the network of tunnels up to the path that leads to the peak of Sperone or Cima Rocca. From there: a) one can descend north along the equipped path that ends on the western slope; b) from the peak one can return back to the entrance

to the third tunnel and come out through the mountain along the trenches that join the previous route. Then one descends to Bocca Pasumer and returns to Biacesa. Variation in altitude: 700 m Time: 4 hours Level: EEA (excursion for equipped experts)

3) Tagliata del Ponale (itinerary accessible only on specific occasions) Tagliata del Ponale is a fortification tunnel-system consisting in a complex of corridors and trenches excavated directly above Lake Garda in a unique panoramic location in the years 1904-1918. It can be reached from Riva del Garda following the “old Ponale road”. The undoubtedly most spectacular arte-

fact of the fortification is the long flight of steps that descends from the third tunnel towards lake level. The steps end a few metres above lake level with four large apertures towards Lake Garda: two posts opening outwards for cannons and two observation posts. The rock complex is very intricate and includes arms and am-

munition rooms, service areas, a medication room and food storage locales.

Variation in altitude: 100 m Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Level: E (excursionists)

4) Trat-Saval-Pernici on the Riccabona path Bocca di Trat, the mountain pass connecting Valle di Ledro with the Lower Sarca area, was guarded by the Austro-Hungarian army. The itinerary starts at Malga Trat, reached on the paved road from Val Concei. The “delle vacche” (cows’) path departs from the Caret peak (1805 m), where remarkable war trench remains,

barracks and a few tunnels are still visible. After Tomeabrù, one turns back towards Bocca Saval: this was the site of the Command headquarters of the Austrian sector, of a field hospital and the arrival point of various cableways from Campi to Malga Grassi. One reaches the Pernici refuge, after pass-

ing by various communication trenches and war barracks. The return to Bocca di Trat is along the main road leading to the bottom of the valley. Variation in altitude: 350 m Time: 2 hours 45 minutes Level: E (excursionists)

5) Monte Altissimo On Mount Altissimo, in the Baldo range, was settled the Austrian army with its first line in the areas of Malga Zures, Dos Casina and Dosso Alto. There are two options from Nago: a) from the town of Nago, drive to Malga Zures, where the Austro-Hungarian tunnels can be visited. From there, proceed on foot to

Dosso Alto, Dos Casina, from where one returns towards Malga Zures along the Peace Path; b) drive up to Prati di Nago, continue on foot to the peak of Mount Altissimo where it is possible to view the field defences of the Italian army.

on the surface of the water The winds that blow regular make every day the perfect day for a trip out in a boat or with the windsurf. The waves, never overly large, are suited to both experts and beginners. Lake Garda is renowned as one of the best Italian regatta locations, and is as good as any of the great international circuits. Riva del Garda, but above all Torbole sul Garda, are the most famous locations for “riding down the wind, also thanks to the quality services available, with schools and equipment hire of the highest quality. Great attention is paid to safety, which is assured by an efficient rescue service.

Pelèr or Vent del Sarca: permanent wind which blows from the north and lasts 12 hours, extending across most of the lake’s surface and joining or feeding other winds. In good weather it starts blowing from the evening until 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. First it blows in the northern and middle Riva del Garda

part of the lake; at sunrise and in the summer months it becomes much stronger, extending across the whole surface; offshore it can reach the speed of 12-15 m/s. It usu-

and 1.00 p.m., after the Pelèr drops, until sunset. It is not as violent as the Pelèr and in fact it never blows faster than 8-10 m/s. This is the wind that has made the Upper Garda very famous in the sailing world. Vineza or Vinesa: this wind comes from the south of the lake; it is created by the Bora wind when it reaches Lake

Garda coming from the Upper Adriatic Sea. It’s usually a strong wind and brings changing weather within the next 24 hours. It can last the whole day. Balì or Balinot: it comes down from Mount Ballino, situated in the north-western part of Riva. It isn’t very frequent, but in winter you can usually find it after a sudden drop of temperature. It can travel at a speed of 20 m/s and it often causes big waves - bigger than Pelèr’s. Ponale or Ponalot: it comes from the Ponale Valley in the west and blows in the evening and at night and oc-

CANYONING / diving / CANOEING / Paragliding / quad

Do you need powerful emotions? If so, Garda Trentino is perfect for you: throw yourself headfirst into the torrents which descend from the mountains towards the lake. Do it, but together with a guide from the canyoning centres, which organize daily trips during the nice season. Canyoning is possible on Lake Garda and also in the Ledro Valley. The routes are only known to few people because the guides are possessive over them! Put on a wetsuit, a helmet and a harness, and brave the fast Trentino torrents which are immersed within the woods, flowing between rocks to meet small lakes unknown even to those who live here.

When the lake is calm, you can enjoy the magic of the surrounding countryside in absolute silence on board the many coloured “piroghe. On the other hand, if you have a more dynamic and competitive spirit, you can't afford to miss the slalom at the mouth of the River Sarca at the Lido of Arco.

CANYONING / diving / CANOEING / Paragliding / quad

in seventh heaven The paraglider is the easiest and lightest aircraft, and the mountains of Garda Trentino are one of the most beautiful places where to practice this wonderful sport, with ever changing and amazing panoramas. It is possible to take off from many places, in Arco on Mt. Velo in loc. Santa Barbara, in Ledro Valley and on Mt. Baldo, where you can experience different kinds of flights: from simple glide to cross-country and acro flying, with great differences in heights and the safety of the lake.

CANYONING / diving / CANOEING / Paragliding / quad

Do you have a taste for adventure? Then try a trip on a quad, the special four-wheeled mountain motorbike imported from the States and used on no-limits cross country trails. Expert guides will accompany you along spectacular and challenging trails. After half an hour’s practice you are ready to go: protective suit, helmet, goggles... and let the four-wheel adventure begin!
