Ban on One-Time Use of Plastic Launched at Puttenahalli

P

uttenahalli, ward number 187, was bustling with activity during the entire first week of February. Bommanahalli MLA, Sathish Reddy, on the 7th February, flagged off the launch to call for a ban on a one time use of plastic and its related items in the entire area at 10 am. Being a Sunday, it was time for even the children to come out in large numbers in support of the call to ban plastic use. Around 300 residents responded to the call in support of this move which is for the good cause of having a better atmosphere to live and lessening the unhygienic levels of conditions. The ill-effects of the use of plastic was broadly explained by the MLA and followed by a number of representatives of HSR team and other RWA members. The Joint Commissioner, Mr. Muniraju and his team of BBMP officials too detailed on the

ill effects of the use of plastic and were supportive of the move. Besides, Corporator, Mrs. Prabhavathi Ramesh, ex-corporator Ramesh too spoke on the issue. Shanthi, Malini and Smitha from the HSR team and the Green Champion Ramakanth too pitched in with their support on this eventful day. The volunteers were busy doing an excellent job in ensuring the area was rid of plastic use and approaching the trading community educat-

ing them in the process. The launch ‘Walkathon’ commenced from the corporator’s office near SLV Corner. The commercial establishments and the traders and shopkeepers were clearly told to avoid use of plastic in future with immediate effect for their own good. It was well received. People were seen carrying the waste left-overs to their respective homes without littering in public. This should stand as a shining example.

Hasirumithra Team Addresses Factory Workers

T

he team of Hasiru Mithra led by Lalithamba took an initiative to visit a garment factory where it found the right kind of pitch to take on in bringing awareness in a mass to a stunning effect. A garment factory (Gokuldas) was selected by the team and the management readily agreed to give its consent for a noble cause to educate the workers on the environment and their surroundings to be kept clean and bother about their health in a much better fashion for their own benefit and for the uplift of their wards. Around 1200 workers assembled and the campaign led by Lalithamba along with Shubha received immediate response in a positive manner. The entire workers were divided in four batches and were detailed about the waste segregation and the ill-effects of use of plastic covers and bags, which they are accustomed to. They were totally educated about the dangers of use of plastic and were told that the need of the

hour is to have a cleaner environment to have better living conditions. They were also told about segregation at source and its protective effect on humans, citing the example of the SS Palya KCDC. It had a tremendous effect on them and they have all agreed to participate in the future campaigns in and around the area and go by it. This is Mass Education indeed!

Say ‘No’ to Plastic – Koramangala Residents

K

oramangala is voicing its move against use of plastic which causes ill-health to humans. The RWA has called to ban the one - use plastic items to improve the environment for conducive living for the future generation in particular. In this connection, the Koramangala RWA along with the BBMP officials , residents, school children and the corporator plan to walk from Ananda Sweets to Jyothi Nivas College educating the traders and shopkeepers and the commercial establishments to cooperate in this regard. The call in support of a ban on plastic will be flagged off by Mr. Ramalinga Reddy, MLA, BTM constituency. The walkathon will begin at the Ganesha Temple Park at 10.30 pm on 14th February.

BBMP Health Inspector Keeps Tabs on Segregation and Plastic Ban

T

he past week has been a tedious one for the residents, their representatives and more importantly, Mr. Mahesh, health inspector, BBMP, who has started work on a serious note soon after he took charge in this zone. He has visited the residential areas and the commercial establishments on alternate days to ensure that the waste is segregated at source and the enforced ban on use of plastic is adhered to. There have been few stray cases where it was found to be violated and a fine was levied both on the traders and the residents for failure to adhere. HSR volunteers cheered neighbouring wards Bellandur, BTM and Puttenahalli as they launched their anti-plastic campaigns. Volunteers

performed a skit to explain the ill-effects of plastic during assembly at Cambridge School in sector 2, HSR Layout. The Health Inspector, Mahesh joined them for an inspection of segregation at sector 7 one day and sector 3 another. They did a check on commercials that were defaulting on plastic ban with Mahesh. Awareness on segregation in sec 6 is completed. An awareness programme on segregation and Swachagraha in Sai Baba Temple by volunteers solicited good response

Residents Speak Dear Editor, Really appreciate the work done by Garden City Plus for bringing out the issues faced by residents in HSR. Can you bring out the issue of UBER drivers using 27th Main as a parking lot? If you come around 8-8:30AM and then later at 3:30PM, you will see 27th Main near UBER office, blocked by UBER drivers. There are 3 schools in the vicinity. These UBER drivers attend to their nature calls on the road; make passes at school going girls. The area has become pretty unsafe due to UBER opening its office here. The road gets choked in the morning and afternoon due to heavy traffic and school buses. UBER drivers abuse and threaten locals if they are asked to move aside. Given their behaviour here, I am not surprised that UBER drivers have been involved in some rape cases. Knowing the characters of their drivers, UBER has refused to Olacabs had the same issue in Koramangala, but they fixed this issue by renting a parking lot and moving all their operations to this location. UBER being a international entity, thinks it can break the law. You will see various buses from Janini and other operators parked at night. The local residents would be really grateful if this issue is highlighted by your newspaper, to help end this menace. On February 8th, after hours of wait the unit head comes out to talk to residents and the Traffic Inspector, Ganesh Rao. He promised to resolve issues in two days. If not, we will go national with the issue of parking and clogging the neighbourhood by Uber personnel, say residents. Regards, Srinath. A HSR Resident

Dear Mr. Srinath, We have already spoken to the Traffic Inspector on this issue who has assured us of solving this issue. From our side, we shall follow it up again and ensure the matter is taken care of and the citizens are free from such hassles. You will hear from us soon. Editor

Low GI foods include whole grains and cereals like oats, barley, and broken wheat, legumes like rajma/masoor and lentils, millets like ragi, foxtail and little millet. On that basis, we have: 1. They include: 1. Fenugreek seeds (seeds/powder can be used in dosa/idli batter, mixed with chapathi dough, added to buttermilk etc) 2. Cinnamon, powder of which can be used in the same way as fenugreek seeds. 3. Ladies finger, mucilaginous vegetables like bhindi or bendekai when prepared adding less oil can help to regulate blood sugar and also relievesconstipation. Smoking can Damage many Parts of the Body

T

he health effects of tobacco are the effects that use of tobacco has on human health, and concern about health effects of tobacco has a long history. Research has focused primarily on cigarette tobacco smoking. In 1950, Richard Doll published research in the British Medical Journal showing a close link between smoking and lung cancer. Four years later, in 1954, the British Doctors Study, a study of some 40,000 doctors over 20 years, confirmed the suggestion, based on which the government issued advice that smoking and lung cancer rates were related. Tobacco use is the single greatest cause of preventable death globally. As many as half of people who use tobacco die from the results of this use. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that each year tobacco causes about 6 million deaths (about 10% of all deaths) with 0.6 million of these occurring in non smokers due to second hand smoke. In the 20th Century, tobacco is estimated to have caused 100 million deaths. Similarly, the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention describes tobacco use as "the single most important preventable risk to human health in developed countries and an important cause of premature death worldwide." Tobacco use leads most commonly to diseases affecting the heart, liver and lungs. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart attacks, strokes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (including emphysema and chronic bronchitis), and cancer (particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth, and pancreatic cancer). It also causes peripheral vascular disease and hypertension. The effects depend on the number of years that a person smokes and on how much the person smokes. Starting smoking earlier in life and smoking cigarettes higher in tar increases the risk of these diseases. Also, environmental tobacco smoke, or second-hand smoke, has been shown to cause adverse health effects in people of all ages. Tobacco use is a significant factor in miscarriages among pregnant smokers, and it contributes to a number of other health problems of the foetus such as premature birth, low birth weight, and increases by 1.4 to 3 times the chance of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Incidence of erectile dysfunction is approximately 85 percent higher in male smokers compared to non-smokers. Several countries have taken measures to control the consumption of tobacco with usage and sales restrictions as well as warning messages printed on packaging. Additionally smoke free

laws are useful, do not have negative economic effects for restaurants or bars and help people who smoke to quit. Taxing tobacco products in an effort to increase the price is also effective, especially in developing countries. Tobacco smoke contains more than fifty chemicals that cause cancer. Tobacco also contains nicotine, which is a highly addictive psychoactive drug. When tobacco is smoked, nicotine causes physical and psychological dependency. Cigarettes sold in underdeveloped countries tend to have higher tar content, and are less likely to be filtered, potentially increasing vulnerability to tobacco smoking related disease in these regions Health effects of smoking Smoking most commonly leads to diseases affecting the heart and lungs and will most commonly affect areas such as hands or feet with first signs of smoking related health issues showing up as numbness, with smoking being a major risk factor for heart attacks, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, and cancer, particularly lung cancer, cancers of the larynx and mouth, and pancreatic cancer. Overall life expectancy is also reduced in long term smokers, with estimates ranging from 10 to 17.9 years fewer than non-smokers. About one half of long term male smokers will die of illness due to smoking. The association of smoking with lung cancer is strongest, both in the public perception and etiologically. Among male smokers, the lifetime risk of developing lung cancer is 17.2%; among female smokers, the risk is 11.6%. This risk is significantly lower in non-smokers: 1.3% in men and 1.4% in women. Historically, lung cancer was considered to be a rare disease prior to World War I and was perceived as something most physicians would never see during their career. With the post war rise in popularity of cigarette smoking came a virtual epidemic of lung cancer. Cancer The primary risks of tobacco usage include many forms of cancer, particularly lung cancer, kidney cancer,[39] cancer of the larynx and head and neck, bladder cancer, cancer of the oesophagus, cancer of the pancreas and stomach cancer. Studies have established a relationship between tobacco smoke, including second hand

Website: www.gardencityplus.com

smoke, and cervical cancer in women. There is some evidence suggesting a small increased risk of myeloid leukaemia, squamous cell sinonasal cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, cancers of the gallbladder, the adrenal gland, the small intestine, and various childhood cancers. The possible connection between breast cancer and tobacco is still uncertain. The risk of dying from lung cancer before age 85 is 22.1% for a male smoker and 11.9% for a female smoker, in the absence of competing causes of death. The corresponding estimates for lifelong non smokers are a 1.1% probability of dying from lung cancer before age 85 for a man of European descent, and a 0.8%

probability for a woman In smoking, long term exposure to compounds found in the smoke (e.g., carbon monoxide and cyanide) are believed to be responsible for pulmonary damage and for loss of elasticity in the alveoli, leading to emphysema and COPD. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) caused by smoking, is a permanent, incurable (often terminal) reduction of pulmonary capacity characterised by shortness of breath, wheezing, persistent cough with sputum, and damage to the lungs, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis. The carcinogen acrolein and its derivatives also contribute to the chronic inflammation present in COPD Cardiovascular Disease:Inhalation of tobacco smoke causes several immediate responses within the heart and blood vessels. Within one minute the heart rate begins to rise, increasing by as much as 30 percent during the first 10 minutes of smoking. Carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke exerts its negative effects by reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Smoking also increases the chance of heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, and peripheral vascular disease. Several ingredients of tobacco lead to the narrowing of blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of a

blockage, and thus a heart attack or stroke. According to a study by an international team of researchers, people under 40 are five times more likely to have a heart attack if they smoke. Recent research by American biologists has shown that cigarette smoke also influences the process of cell division in the cardiac muscle and changes the heart's shape. The usage of tobacco has also been linked to Buerger's disease (Thromboangiitis Obliterans) the acute inflammation and thrombosis (clotting) of arteries and veins of the hands and feet. Although cigarette smoking causes a greater increase of the risk of cancer than cigar smoking, cigar smokers still have an increased risk for many health problems, including cancer, when compared to non-smokers. As for second-hand smoke, the NIH study points to the large amount of smoke generated by one cigar, saying "cigars can contribute substantial amounts of tobacco smoke to the indoor environment; and, when large numbers of cigar smokers congregate in a cigar smoking event, the amount of ETS [i.e. second-hand smoke] produced is sufficient to be a health concern for those regularly required to work in those environments Smoking is also linked to susceptibility to infectious diseases, particularly in the lungs. Smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day increases the risk of by two to four times, and being a current smoker has been linked to a fourfold increase in the risk of invasive pneumococcal disease. It is believed that smoking increases the risk of these and other pulmonary and respiratory tract infections both through structural damage and through effects on the immune system. The effects on the immune system include an increase in CD4+ cell production attributable to nicotine, which has tentatively been linked to increased HIV susceptibility. Female infertility Smoking is harmful to the ovaries, potentially causing female infertility, and the degree of damage is dependent upon the amount and length of time a woman smokes. Nicotine and other harmful chemicals in cigarettes interfere with the body’s ability to create estrogen, a hormone that regulates folliculogenesis and ovulation. Also, cigarette smoking

interferes with folliculogenesis, embryo transport, endometrial receptivity, endometrial angiogenesis, uterine blood flow and the uterine myometrium. Some damage is irreversible, but stopping smoking can prevent further damage. Smokers are 60% more likely to be infertile than non-smokers. Smoking reduces the chances of IVF producing a live birth by 34% and increases the risk of an IVF pregnancy miscarrying by 30%. Psychological "Smokers often report that cigarettes help relieve feelings of stress. However, the stress levels of adult smokers are slightly higher than those of nonsmokers, adolescent smokers report increasing levels of stress as they develop regular patterns of smoking, and smoking cessation leads to reduced stress. Far from acting as an aid for mood control, nicotine dependency seems to exacerbate stress. This is confirmed in the daily mood patterns described by smokers, with normal moods during smoking and worsening moods between cigarettes. Thus, the apparent relaxant effect of smoking only reflects the reversal of the tension and irritability that develop during nicotine depletion. Dependent smokers need nicotine to remain feeling normal." Immediate effects Users report feelings of relaxation, sharpness, calmness, and alertness. Those new to smoking may experience nausea, dizziness, increased blood pressure, narrowed arteries, and rapid heart beat. Generally, the unpleasant symptoms will eventually vanish over time, with repeated use, as the body builds a tolerance to the chemicals in the cigarettes, such as nicotine. Social and behavioural patterns Medical researchers have found that smoking is a predictor of divorce. Smokers have a 53% greater chance of divorce than non smokers. Cognitive function The usage of tobacco can also create cognitive dysfunction. There seems to be an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, although "case–control and cohort studies produce conflicting results as to the direction of the association between smoking and AD". Smoking has been found to contribute to dementia and cognitive decline, reduced memory and cognitive abilities in adolescents, and brain shrinkage (cerebral atrophy). SS Palya Lake to be Restored to its Original Status

I

n the aftermath of the protest against the garbage dumping at KCDC, there has been considerable improvement on the issue. Along with this, a part of the lake bed which has been ‘acquired’ by the land grabbers is lost. At least, all that can be now done is to ensure nothing more is lost. In order to have this lake restored, Mr. Kupendra Reddy had on that day of the protest, said that he had submitted many pleas and applications for it to be given to a NGO or a private organization or an individual who would maintain it and the lake is thus saved from such land mafia. He also said that he was prepared to maintain it provided it is handed over. Tech could give you week's battery in single charge With this new technology, your phone could get an entire week's battery life in a single charge. 'Give us more juice' was the cry from tech enthusiasts at this year's Consumer Electronics Show held in January in Las Vegas and the number one item on their tech wish list was better battery life, Fortune said in its survey report. To this increasing demand, Intelligent Energy -- a 27-year-old British company working on clean power technology -- has an answer. Hydrogen fuel cells do not work like conventional lithium-ion batteries, charging and re-charging electrodes every time a phone needs a boost,' Fortune reported. 'Instead they generate electricity from a chemical reaction, combining hydrogen with oxygen to create an electrical current as well as a water by-product.' 'This technology can also be used to make a hybrid fuel cell battery. By integrating the powerful fuel cells into a phone battery, the device continues to be wall-chargeable, but also packs a boost of backup power,' the report noted. Source IANS
