he lack of a traffic signal at 19th Main17th Cross junction in HSR Layout Sector 3 near Nandini Cooljoint is leading to many violations, including vehicle users coming on one-way roads. The funny part is that there is a traffic signal on one end of 19th Main, but it's hidden behind the trees and hardly seen by the vehicle users. What's worse is that it is not operational. It may be recalled that only last week, one vehicle user had smashed the stone barricade

on 19th Main on the side of Nandini Cooljoint and it had to be reset again by the cops the next day. Last month, HSR residents had tweeted to the top traffic cops that a signal and dividers are required at the junctions of 19th Main-11th Cross Road and 27th Main-7th Cross. Additional C ommissioner of Police R Hithendra had promised action. Lets hope this junction is also included as part of the plan.

very Monday, since June 2018, a group of residents accompanied by the staff of Agara Lake and morning walkers/joggers, pick up trash at the premises of the water body. Call it 'plogging' or a cleanliness drive, but this is something they began three months ago and doing it continuously and with a fervour seen only among civic activists. Plogging is a fitness trend that is all about people walking and running even while picking up plastic strewn along the roads, footpaths and park/lake premises. Why Monday? Because the trash is maximum after the 12000-14000
people that visit the lake on weekends (6-8000/day). Last Monday, the amount of garbage collected by five residents, three staff workers and two citizens filled up four large bags weighing about 60-70 kilos. "Even after the bins are made available, people still litter all over the place," says resident Kavitha Reddy of the Agara Lake Protection & Management Society. "Plastic bottles, ice-cream cups, plastic spoons, cone Ice-cream papers, paper cups from corn, chocolate, toffees, guthka wrappers, bhel puri paper, plastic covers..."

Says Mohan Govindiah, secretary, Namma Teacher's Colony Residents Welfare Association: "The BBMP workers dug a 10 feet hole into the ground, put a ring around it, placed gravel, charcoal and sand at the bottom for about 3-4 feet, and covered the well with a grill, so people don't fall into it. Whenever it rains, all the impurities will settle down because of the sand and gravel, and the rest of the good water will recharge the groundwater levels."

Hasiru Mithra's health camp for BBMP workers is a big hit!
A
bout 115 BBMP workers (pourakarmikas and garbage auto drivers) benefitted from the health check up camp at Government Primary School on Somasundrapalya Main Road. It was organised last week by Hasiru Mithra, a group of proactive HSR Layout residents, in association with B. PAC ( (Bangalore Political Action Committee), Lions Club, Vonisha Service Foundation and NH Narayana. The camp included dental checkups, eye tests, BMI (body mass index), BP, blood tests, ECG and general physician checks. Over 50 women
underwent breast cancer checkup too. The novelty of the event was that no politician or VVIP was lighting the lamp but the workers themselves. One woman cancer patient talked about the importance of health checkups and hygiene. And according to volunteer Kamesh Rastogi, "Not a single gram of trash and food waste was generated." The event would not have been possible without the support and involvement of these individuals: Lalithamba BV, Dr Nagasubramanian, Phaneesh, Lokesh, Lohith, Rajnikanth, and Moheen.

HSR resident shares bank OTP; gets scammed of Rs 27,738!
L
ast week, one resident of Lingarajpuram shared his bank's OTP on phone to strangers and lost Rs 41884. And the very next day, an HSR resident suffered the same fate. On September 28, 55-year-old Krishna Rama Bhakare, a resident of Sector 2, Somasundrapalya, got a call at midnight from someone masquerading himself as a banker. Sending him into a panic mode that his card was locked out, and they need to ascertain if he is the genuine card
JOURNAL
holder, the cheat gets him to reveal his debit card number and the OTP. By this, he was able to easily swap his SIM (a genuine procedure when you lose your SIM) and take hold of his bank account. The result is that Krishna lost Rs 27,738, and filed a complaint with the Cybercrime police station on October 4. When anyone claiming to be from your bank calls you at unearthly hours when you have made no banking transaction, don't trust them so easily. And never, ever share your OTP, bank
account number or PIN. The banks are never supposed to ask you that. If your card is stolen, lost or locked out, it's best to go to the nearest bank branch and get it resolved. Many websites have been set up that give the wrong service numbers of banks. So it's important that you have the emergency phone numbers now to deal with a future eventuality. In another incident that was revealed by a complaint yesterday, Rajesh D, a resident of RR Layout, was cheated of Rs 60,000. On October 2, 2018, someone had taken away a whopping sum from his ICICI bank credit card. One way to guard yourself against this is to try and use a mobile wallet like Paytm or Google Tez. Another safeguard is to limit your credit card spending to just Rs 1000 a day. That way, even if you are defrauded, the amount would not be so high. Since there have been cases of bank officials colluding with fraudsters in carrying out these scams, you can never trust anybody. Taking these precautionary measures is a surefire way of staying safe and secure.

Stray dogs scare HSR residents!
S
ector 6 resident Biju Chacko reports that last week, a pack of dogs attacked two strays in front of her house on 7th Main, 14th Cross. "This pack randomly attacked the strays on our road," she said. "It was scary as they were right at my doorstep. They were so violent." According to CUPA founder trustee Suparna Ganguly, "This could be because the dogs are either relocated, which is against the Supreme Court order, or they are left together in one spot that led to the creation of groups, when it should not
be the case. You need to not only understand the psychology of dogs but a ls o t he s cience of city management. For example, the private parties have been picking up pups and leaving out the mother, who either becomes aggressive or depressed, and biting cases will be inevitable. Similarly, dislocated dogs will create mayhem wherever they go. Similarly, if you release all the dogs in one area, the dogs get so scared that they become dependent on each other... they form a pack and their aggression levels are higher."

Conversational Kannada classes, anyone?
T
he residents of Teachers Colony have decided to i mp a r t c o nv e r s at i o n a l Kannada classes for non-Kannadigas at a nominal rate of Rs 100 while senior citizens don't have to pay anything. Though this is meant for residents staying in and around Teacher's
Colony, they have been kind enough to extend this facility to all the residents of HSR Layout and HSR Layout extension. The classes will be conducted every Sunday, beginning October 14, 2018. They will be held over two months. The Kannada sessions will be held at Carmel Garden Public School from
11am to 1230pm. "The necessary books will be provided by us," says Divya Yogeesh. "A teacher from BTM Layout will be the regular faculty in addition to the Kannada-speaking residents who volunteer from time to time." In addition to weekly contact classes, the education will happen through a WhatsApp group specifically set up only for students. "Every day, we will teach them how to draft one sentence," says Divya. "In addition, all the doubts will be clarified by the tutors in the WhatsApp group." The interested candidates can register their names by paying Rs 100 as the registration fee with either Geetha (90087-97000) or Divya (9480350295). And those who want to volunteer as a Kannada teacher are also welcome to be part of this noble initiative.

"These public grievance meetings should happen regularly, atleast once in three or four months, and if the MLA is busy, then atleast at the corporator level."
After the meeting, MLA Ramalinga Reddy addressed the media and said that he has instructed the concerned officials to take up sanitary and stormwater drain works, install CCTVs and address the garbage and traffic issues in Ward 173. "We will try to solve their problems as much as possible," he said. "There will always be small problems, and we will continue to solve them as they happen." Corporator Saraswathamma said, "75% of the ward's problems are addressed, we will now focus on the pending issues."

The Floretz Exhibition surprised to see so many five-yearolds confidently presenting their projects (whether it was about reflection/refraction of light or Water Sources of the Earth, etc). The Floretz Exhibition was a culmination of months of hard work from teachers, children and parents. The parents realised the depth of the methodology and why children going to Montessori Schools come out as better beings. With over 800 visitors across both the schools, parents were thrilled to see the hard work put in by the Floretz Team and the exposure that their children were getting. It was heartening to see visitors from various schools, Montessori training institutes and other well-known educationists. Overall, an excellent experience for all of the people who attended.
