Overbridge near HSR BDA flyover inaugurated twice!
L
ast week, former Home Minister and BTM Layout MLA Ramalinga Reddy laid the foundation stone for the construction of a skywalk between Teacher's Colony-Sector 5 and HSR Layout Sector 6. The irony of it is that it was inaugurated earlier by Bommanahalli MLA Satish Reddy in July 2018 on the HSR side of the road. When it was first inaugurated, the work on the overbridge near 9th Main Road and Sector 5 near the bus stand on the other side of Outer Ring Road (ORR) never got off to a start. The work was not allowed to begin because certain jurisdictional permissions were not given. Some residents wondered how a skywalk could come up where a Metro was supposed to come up. The contractor responded by saying that
the height alignment of 28 feet will not interfere with the Metro coming up at 45 feet. However, while he had the go-ahead from the Bommanahalli side of ORR, Sector 5 comes under the Jakkasandra ward handled by a different MLA. Last week, BTM Layout MLA Ramalinga Reddy inaugurated the skywalk yet again, this time on his side of the road, and the work should now proceed briskly. This skywalk will be built by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on a public-private partnership (PPP) model. To be built by Adonai Shelters, this will ease the road crossing blues of several elderly citizens and students. In addition, there will be electronic escalators to help the elderly and the disabled from using the skywalk.
it? "So they don't have to desilt the drains everytime," said Sector 3 resident Mohan. "Just raise the height and it will take care of the extra water. And if there is a blockage, they just remove the slabs at the intersections and put them back at their own time and pace. All their work is ad-hoc. There is no proper longterm plan about the issue of drains."
Resident Srinivas DN has slammed the BBMP for its shoddy quality of culverts. Posting a picture as proof, he highlights the elevation of the culvert and adds that the cement work is so bad that it comes off within a couple of months. Will the BBMP high command and the state government sort out the system before it sinks us all?
N
ew voters and old voters wanting to correct the entries need to hurry as the last date for claims and objections is November 20. With the general elections to be held in April or May 2019, it's time to make your voice heard. Vote. For numbers of electoral officers in HSR Layout, Bommanahalli and Begur, you could refer to this visual below. For more clarifications on the various forms, just refer to this chart by the residents of Mahadevapura.
Raised drain inconvenience pedestrians & shoddy quality upsets residents
E
verytime, the roads are paved, they raise the height. The same is at work when they erect culverts over drains. The best examples are the ones done at 5th Main and 9th Main. With such heights, residents fear that the water will enter their homes much more easily due to their higher elevation.
What's worse is that senior citizens are not table to walk and fetch their groceries or accompany their nieces and nephews because the slope is too long, and many elderly have slipped and fallen as well. "The culverts on 9th Main and 5th Main and every other road where new ones have come up are not friendly to pedestrians at all,
particularly senior citizens like us," said Sheela Nair, a resident of Sector 7. "I pray to god that he give some good sense to the authorities and politicians concerned." One resident even said that although Bangalore is 900 metres above sea level, it is getting flooded because of these foolish practices by the civic agencies. But why is the BBMP doing

Residents stop mobile tower installation in HSR Layout
KLM: Common man's mall opens in HSR Layout

ector 4 residents stopped the installation of a mobile tower atop a ground plus two floor house by Airtel last week. It's unusual for the telecom service provider to opt for such a low-lying house that could not only be harmful to the residents. According to the residents, the person responsible behind the installation attempt was the owner of house number 228. "Although Debnath is the house owner, the No Objection Certiticate (NOC) was signed by his friend living next door," said resident Kavitha Reddy. "Residents around have stopped the work and the BBMP Joint Commissioner (Bommanahalli) confirmed that he was not even aware that such a permission was given." Now the residents have asked the
S e c t o r 4 R e s i d e n t s We l f a r e Association to up this issue with the BBMP and issue a warning to the owner of the house. "Just for the sake of money, people like Debnath and his neighbour are putting the entire locality in danger," said Reddy. "Telecom towers are banned in residential areas and these people are violating the law and playing with the health of citizens." DO MOBILE TOWERS CAUSE CANCER? According to the American Cancer Society, the radiofrequency waves emitted by mobile towers do not cause DNA damage that can lead to cancer. In London, you will be hard pressed to find a mobile tower, because they are all installed outside the city. What you
will see instead of boosters inside the city. In a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by film actress Juhi Chawla in 2015, her lawyer cited this and asked India to follow suit. However, India's telecom regulatory authority maintains that its standards are 10times stricter than the global standards. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has made a public statement that the radiation from cell phones. mobile towers and Wi-Fi as "possibly carcinogenic". In April 2017, the Supreme Court gave a landmark ruling in favour of a cancer patient who alleged that he got it because of a mobile tower next to his office. The country's highest court ordered the deactivation of the tower.

LM, the common man's shopping mall opened its doors on October 26 in HSR Layout. KLM stands for 'Keep Loveing More'. It has a wide range of dresses for men, women, and kids. The store on 27th Main Road and 22nd Cross junction in Sector 2 excels at affordable pricing. The price begins from Rs 100 and goes up to several thousands. Expect excellent quality and a choice of 2 lakh items at any given time. Quite rightly, film actress Rashmika Mandanna is the brand ambasador for KLM in Bangalore.
KLM specialises in clothing for men, women and children. They have four floors, where the ground floor has all the types of sarees. The first floor has womenswear like tops, t- shirts, and salwar kameez. The second floor is where women can pick up sarees while the third floor is meant for kids wear and the fourth is for gents. The beauty of KLM is that they offers throughout the year, so you don't have to shop only during festival time. So what is KLM's USP? The price, quality and wide range.

9th Main drain work will remain for another 2-3 months!
B
BMP Joint Commissioner ( B o m m a n a h a l l i ) Veerabhadraswamy has told us that the restoration work of 19th Main drain work shown in the picture will take another 2-3 months. Since it's an inter-agency work that involves the
Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation who can only work on holidays as their power line runs right in the middle of the drain, it is a longdrawn out problem. According to BBMP officials, the problem can be resolved only when half
of Bangalore's electricity supply is cut off for a day. "These are two 222 kilowatt power lines from KPTCL in the middle of the 9th Main drain," said one official. "To fix that, we need to first stop the chemicals coming to 9th Main drains from the dye factories on Begur Road. And then, there is the problem of shifting these cables underneath the drain. If it was over the drain, we could have done it by now." To top it all, this work requires one Sunday when Bescom, BBMP and KPTCL have to get all their equipment, switch off the power supply for half of Bangalore, and fix the months-long work in a day." The 9th Main drain works in other stretches of the area have inconvenienced residents no end. One resident is not able to get out of the Continued on page 5

Will authorities fix Bellandur after the protest by residents last Saturday?
D
riven by abject apathy and complete irresponsibility by the authorities and successive governments, thousands of residents from Bellandur Ward 150 formed a human chain last Saturday (October 27) to press for their demands. According to t he Kasavanahalli Development Forum (KDF), about 11,000 residents stood along the 7 kilometre stretch, starting from the Carmelaram Junction on Sarjapur Road to the skywalk on Outer Ring Road. "The fact that so many people prticipated in this event indicates that there is increasing awareness of the poor conditions in which we live," says Sudarshan Shastry of the KDF. "I am sure someone has to now sit up and take note of our needs - we should be able to expect some positive action in the near future!" Adding that Iblur, Outer Ring Road and Sarjapur Road are among the the top five worst motorable roads in Bengaluru, the KDF says that the area will see an addition of over 60,000 additional office spaces on these roads. "Today, over 3,00,000 PCUs are the peak commuters in this zone, making this one of the most choked zones in Bangalore, but there is no real intent or urgency to decongest the area," says Vishnu Prasad of the KDF. "Just this year, there have been about five known deaths in and around Sarjapur road. Water, under ground drainage is non existent for the majority of residents in this IT
corridor. The works happening on this front as part of 110 Villages, is not at the pace and quality that is helping residents. There is no coordinated plan to speed up. Today, roads are dug for months with no motorable restoration. This lack of infrastructure in addition to dug up roads with no proper relief to residents is adding to serious mobility issues, putting many lives in danger. One of the highest number of H1N1 cases is from Bellandur, Mahadevapura due to lack of the most basic drain infrastructure." In July 2018, over 60 resident welfare associations teamed up to come up with a Ward level plan called the 'Bellandur Development Resolution 2018'. Their wishlist was submitted to the area representatives, BBMP and the state government for implementation. But when nothing
happened, it forced the federation of RWAs, including Kasavanahalli Development Forum, Bellandur For um, Bangalore Apar tment Federation (BAF), Carmelaram Unites, SPARSH, Doddakanneli Rising, Haralur Forum, Kasa Muktha Bellandur (KMB) and many more to join hands and conduct a series of events to highlight this apathy. On October 21 morning, they conducted a painting contest for kids under 15 years around the theme of Road, Mobility, Water & General Infrastructure. The same afternoon, they went on a three-hour awareness campaign in cycles and motorbikes across Sarjapur Road, Kasavanahalli, Haralur, Carmelaram, Doddakanneli and Bellandur to highlight the plight of the area's residents. The citizens have submitted their memorandum to chief secretary TM
Vijaybhaskar to press for their demands with a copy of it to the Bangalore Development minister G Parameshwar, the Ministry of Road Transport and the Public Works Department (PWD). Shutdown basement eateries and shops to allow for parking
W
hy is the BBMP silent about not getting eateries and shops vacated in HSR Layout despite letters from residents welfare associations and media reports? Clearly, there is lethargy or a nexus between the landlords and the BBMP officials. Bansuri Sweets, Sandwich Truffles and Jhasaa on 27th Road in HSR Layout should be shut down first as
basement eateries are a risk to humans We urge BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad and Joint Commissioner (Bommanahalli) Veerabhadraswamy to take action on all those buildings who have illegally rented out their basements meant for parking to decongest HSR Layout. To begin with, they can target the main commercial areas where

parking is direly required: 24th Main, 27th Main, 9th Main, 5th Main, 22nd Cross, and 17th Cross. Once these main roads are cleared of encroachments, the BBMP can proceed to commercial buildings in other cross roads and main roads where such basement violations exist. In August this year, one shop in a basement on 27th Main suffered a fire mishap. The fire force officials took more than two hours to contain the fire. And yet, the BBMP officials have not shut down that shop when they should have taken that as the worst case scenario and closed all the basement eateries violating the building bylaws and fire safety norms. What's worse is that basement eateries are allowed to flourish by the BBMP despite repeat complaints from residents and the media. This is a contempt of the Karnataka High Court order on basement eateries and BBMP officials should be suspended for dereliction of duty. It's now or never. Enough waiting. It's time for action

Posting a picture and tweeting to BBMP Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad, resident Shekhar Kapoor says: "This is the situation in Sector 6. What are your thoughts about the safety of the citizens here? Brain Development in Adolescence by Deepa Ravichandran
T
his article is being written as though a teenager (an adolescent) is speaking to you. It is on how a teenager's brain functions and, therefore, how the society must respond to this age group. Our country will be the youngest country in few years time and so, it is very important that we understand this aspect. Hi friends,I am going to talk about something very interesting. “Brain Development in Adolescence”. What's happening in our Brain when we are in the ages of 12 to 25? Our brains have a massive growth spurt when we are very young. By the time we are 6, our brains are already about 90-95% of adult size. But the brain still needs a lot of remodelling before it can function as an adult brain. This brain remodelling happens intensively during adolescence. We get to hear the following quite often: · What's the matter with you these days? · Why are you soooo confused? · You are very rude and curt… · Yo u a r e v e r y a n n o y i n g , demanding, moody and reckless… · Why can't you get rid of your gadgets? I wonder, what's happened to me all of a sudden. I feel that everything is fine with me and the whole world is just picking on me. My mom told me that the “Prefrontal Cortex” has begun to grow and it's the play of “Amygdala”. All these are“big words” for me.You know the front part of the brain is called Prefrontal Cortex. That part starts developing from when we are 12.This part of the brain is responsible for - decisionmaking, ability to plan, think about the consequences of actions, solve problems and control impulses. Because the prefrontal cortex is still
· ·
developing, we might rely on a part of the brain called the amygdala to make decisions and solve problems. The amygdala is associate d with emotions, impulses, aggression and instinctive behaviour. And now you know why we are so driven by strong emotions. My mom says, “I talk like an adult, but behave like a child”. This could be because of the influence of Amygdala. I read a survey that said that everyday unhappiness also reaches its peak during adolescence. How many of us set the alarm and also wish it does not ring? During adolescence our sleep pattern changes. This is because the brain produces melatonin at a different time of the day. This hormone decides when we are alert or drowsy during the day. Because of the change of time of its secretion, it keeps us awake into the night and makes it difficult to get up the next morning. Psychologists have recommended to our
government to shift the starting of the school to 11am for high schoolers for this reason. Friends, if you find it difficult to wake up early, do not worry. You are in tune with our biological clock. I so wish that all schools and colleges start at 11AM. While our brain is developing, we might also want to take more risks or choose high-risk activities (read as ride our motorbikes very fast), express stronger emotions and make impulsive decisions. We develop craving for junk food as a lot of fat is required for the prefrontal lobe to develop. Our intellectual capacity also takes a dip (Phew! I now have a reason for poor marks and don't need to forge signatures). We will show little to no interest in daily chores and homework. Is all this happening to you too? If yes, then we can say that our “Think Pot – Pref ront a l L ob e” has st ar te d developing. First of all, we should believe that this is just another phase of our life. Let me end with few tips to help us face this part of our life smoothly.
·
·
·
·
·
·
·
We must be open with our parents and speak our heart. Guess what, they will understand!!! Discuss with them and find out our boundaries and then ensure that we do not cross those (remember we can be reckless) Set timetables and routines according to our biological clock and routine. We should not get into any kind of addiction, be it a chemical or video games or gadgets. We need to find new creative and expressive outlets for our feelings. Many of us will have a hobby like, sports, dance, music, writing and other art forms. We need to indulge in these even if it is only as a spectator. An hour of hard core physical activity will help us handle mood swings. 15 Mins of daily meditation will reduce impulsiveness.
We need to eat well Take decisions…take risks…but discuss with adults and understand the consequences of our action and then act. · Be aware of the influence of the release of a hormone called, “Serotonin” in the brain…and act wisely. This is the one that sets off all our imagination when we see the opposite gender!!! This can be the best part of our life with so much fun and love if we remember that our parents and teachers are there to help us and we take them in to confidence. What should teachers do for us? Maria Montessori envisioned a different type of school environment foradolescents. She envisioned a selfsufficient community, possibly a farm. The students would grow their own food (study agriculture), plan meals (study nutrition), add to the buildings (architecture), make their own clothing (fashion design). They may also write their own plays about historical events, write poetry, songs, choreograph dances for their cultural days. In this protected environment, under adult supervision, adolescents would be prepared for living on their own. This would satisfy their strong need for independence while helping them learn that a harmonious society consists of inter-dependent people. Our teachers must understand that we also strive to establish our identity as a part of the society. Hence, if we get projects based on the issues that exist in the society we live in, it will excite us. Our learning can be brought to life with such projects. I hope that our developmental needs drive the way our learning happens and not by some bureaucrat sitting somewhere not understanding our needs!!!

Shop at Paatra Bhandar; donate to charity Fair price and innovative items are its USP
P
aatra Bhandaar, the chain of four stores in Bangalore, including one in HSR Layout, is not only known for selling kitchen utensils at a fair price but also offering unique items not found elsewhere. In addition, it offers to take back used utensils at Rs 100/kg and about 3033% of the new utensils they get from the manufacturer in lieu of the used utensils are donated to needy people. Mukesh Kumar Katariya, partner, Paatra Bhandar, The people behind this business have been retailing since 2006. Prior to that, they were into the wholesale
business of kitchen appliances. They made their retail debut in kitchen appliances with a showroom in Jayanagar in 2006. A year later, they donated 3-4kg of utensils to 2000 needy families. Soon, they added more stores in HSR L ayout, Banashankari and Rajajinagar. "We plan to have 17 more stores in Bangalore and intend to collect 5 lakh utensils, so we can help 1 lakh needy families with new utensils," says Mukesh Kumar Katariya, partner, Paatra Bhandar. They came up with this idea of charity when they realised that every other
philanthropist or NGO donated clothes and food, but no one thought about kitchen utensils. "Since our business was in kitchen utensils, we thought this could be the right mode of contributing to a noble cause." Procedure and benefits of exchange program: Customer gets best price for old utensils and kitchen items (in any condition). Customer visits Patra Bhandar gives old utensils for exchange and collect a Credit voucher, which they can redeem in 30 days Customer is not only exchanging old
utensils for new, but customers are also contributing for noble Noble caused. Old utensils collected are sent to factories and in return factories give us new utensils proportionately. Which we distribute to the needy. Before distributing the new utensils Patra Bhandar makes assorted utensils hamper. Patra Bhandar organisers an event to donate utensils for BPL families, were in those customers who had donated utensils or had exchanged old utensils will be invited to visit the event and distribute utensils hampers to the needy from their hands.
Paatra brander's USP is new generation utensils available at a fair price. "The customers come searching for our store not only for the innovative range but also for the fair price," says Kumar. "There's no such enterprise in countr y who is expanding as a chain of stores in kitchenware category. There are single brand stores across India, but no multibrand chain of stores. Our target is to set up 40 stores in Karnataka." The other USP of Paatra Bhandar is that they give bills with every purchase that not only helps customers with warranty issues but also guarantees their peace of mind. "When they face any quality challenge or problem, they can be rest assured that such items will be repaired or replaced," says Kumar. "We sell 45 different brands and two of our own brands... right now, it's a small range of our own products (manufactured by others keeping their specs in mind), we intend to expand the range in a large way five years down the line." ................................... The next time you are thinking of kitchen items or cutlery, you know where to head.
