t is always a habit forming attitude for every individual almost to pass the buck on someone else rather than analyzing what has been done by the individual concerned towards the betterment of the society and environment. Just for an argument sake, if one sees or a group see waste or garbage being littered or thrown in the corner of a street, then fingers are immediately raised accusing the government, its
agencies, the officials, the elected representatives and all others concerned, barring those who have actually been responsible for this mess

the place as a collection of garbage was segregated there and taken to the landfills. Such a hue and cry was raised following the dump and non-clearance of garbage that each one demanded their own rights as a tax-payer accusing the government and its agencies of at the spot. Can the same citizens not non-performance. Let us not expect only the government and its refrain from creating this mess? Over a period of time, this spot was agencies to perform. Co-ordination needed between Citizens and Agencies
Govt to ensure Planting of 16.5 Lakh Tree Saplings in July
Continued from Pg 1
Finally the realization, that planting and nurturing of trees are the future for better environment rather than chopping them, has dawned on the government that it has recently initiated action through its agencies BBMP, BDA and KFD to plant tree saplings and seeds across Bengaluru in July. The intensity of the scorching heat of the wrath of the sun might be one valid point behind this decision, it seems. “The government has decided to plant 16.5 lakh saplings”, KJ George, Bengaluru Development Minister said and has directed the officials of the agencies mentioned to select the plants snd make adequate arrange-
B
ments and preparations at all ward levels to take up this massive planting operation as part of Vanamahotsava. He added,“Every sapling will be protected with a tree guard made of bamboos. Plantation work will be divided among BBMP, BDA and KFD. As on date, we have already kept 10 lakh saplings ready for plantation at various nurseries under our limits. To encourage the public, we are coming up with an idea that every house will have two trees. While the BDA would offer one lakh seedlings, the KFD will deliver 5 lakh saplings. However, the BBMP has not set aside any budget exclusively for planting saplings.”
on us too. Assist the agency to perform. But, basically, who is responsible for the mess created? The citizens, on their part will also have to realize that they have their duties to perform other than just accusing. The Judiciary had laid the conditions of work on the government and its agencies to work and not to do shoddy one at that as was done before. In order to achieve this, there were many civic experts involved in the discussions with the government and BBMP along with KSPCB to ensure little or minimum environmental problems in future by designing few methods of work and putting systems in place. These individuals must ensure that their role also is equally played in assisting the agencies to execute the work for the benefit of the society and environment. In case, one wants to know what is happening in the neighbourhood, then there are many ways to know and one of them is by contributing what best one can in any which way one can. It is not just BBMP which has work to do for the maintenance of day to day activities of citizens for instance, filling potholes, repairing roads, ensuring streetlights are working, and more importantly, ensuring that the
garbage is cleared daily from the houses and is disposed of in the right manner. So, the citizens have no option but to engage with the system, to get things done in their respective neighbourhoods. There are other agencies like BWSSB, BESCOM, BDA and others who are also equally loaded with responsibilities on behalf of the citizens. When in confusion of what to do if something has to be set right, first try to do the maximum which can be done by self only and not being dependent on others. If segregation is done at source, then where is the question of waste dump at street corners? To keep oneself abreast with information, meet the corporator and ward committee members, BBMP officials and get the required data and proceed in the problem solving process. A ward committee can prepare and submit ward development scheme to the Palike for funds, supervise
programmes and schemes implemented in the ward, ensure proper utilisation of the funds allotted. If one wants to get into this committee, it can be done only if the committee has not been formed and the posts are not filled. Likewise the resident Welfare Association (RWA) can also suggest an apolitical ward by meeting the corporator with a list of names. On becoming a ward committee member, the committee decides the nature of work to be undertaken with meetings regularly held. There are NGOs like ESG, CIVIC and CAF lobbying hard with the government and fighting PILs on the issue of ward committee who will also be of help in this regard. Even on not becoming a ward committee member, one can contribute by paying taxes on time, ensure garbage segregation is done at source, be aware of what is happening in the neighbourhood, understand the situations, question the inevitable, assist the administration, corporator or the ward committee in streamlining the process and anything which is for the uplift of the area. An informed, engaged citizenry is the major ingredient in the recipe for a successful democracy. So, get involved today and contribute for a better tomorrow! Put an end to the blame game and show signs of prosperity.

Shemrock’s ‘Jingle Bells’ - India’s First Playschool Chain to Complete One Year
S
hemrock, India’s first Playschool, which had revolutionalised the concept of early childhood education will complete its first year at Haraluru. The chain’s school, Jingle Bells started its operation in 2016, moderately and can now take pride in claiming that it has already made its mark within a short span of time. Shemrock is an award winning school chain with over 3,50,000 children in its fold and over 525 branches across India, Nepal and Bangladesh. It is spread in 27 states and Union Territories in India including 70 branches in Delhi and NCR. Jingle Bells is the name of the school with the Brand being Shemrock. An interesting point which would be a matter for all children to rejoice is that the Brand Ambassador for the group of schools is none other than children`s favorite cartoon character Chota Bheem. Garden City Plus interacted with Ms. Padmavathi .S, the Chairperson of the School and Ms. Devi Naveen, the Head Mistress. The branch which was started in 2016, with an intention of spreading knowledge among children at a tender age combining play and education (Play and Learn) with care and focused attention, has achieved what it had set its goal as. The school has a child friendly harmonious environment which is serene overlooking a Lake to add more atmospheric excellence. The over 3,000 sq ft play area speaks volumes of the serious-
ness with which the management has created the environment to suit and satisfy the children’s inquisitive mind. Besides the existing equipment, indent has been made for additional ones from Korea. The investment on these safety measures is around Rs. 60 Lakhs. There are some merits attached to the school which would attract any parent to send their children to study here. The teacher – student ratio is 1:10 and a maid. The school has a concept teaching specialty in which every Wednesday shall be called as ‘Wow! Wednesday’, building the curiosity among the children as to guess what is in store on that particular day. The second Wednesday is ‘Celebration Day’, which is meant to celebrate the children’s birthday of those students born during that month. Cakes are cut and mothers of children bring gifts to the children. The remaining Wednesdays are all spent with some different concepts every week. The school attaches importance to the discipline of the students as this is
what shall make them become good citizens of India in future. Character building is the prime concentration and handwriting is the other aspect – both these go hand in glove with each other. The teachers are well trained and B.Ed qualified. It is like having a second Mother to the children. Hygiene and nutrition is well taken care as the school insists that the children are served hot or warm food which is brought from their respective homes. The school provides gas stoves for this activity. Thus it ensures every child has his or her food without wasting listening to some stories or rhymes or action by the teachers. Cameras are installed all round which ensures safety of children and are any time easily traceable. The parents can see their wards’ activities in the school in their absence. The recordings from the cameras are shown when required. Finally, rounding off the conversation, the Chairperson said “We are highly competitive so far as the fee structure is concerned. We compete with the best, as our quality of teaching is of the highest order”. Garden City Plus contacted a few parents of the children who attend this school and their reaction were as excerpted:
Email: gadencityplus2013@gmail.com
“Mr. Murugesan Uday Kumar, parent of Bhumika Payal, said that they have no language barrier and handle this with ease. The care is very good and the children are safe.”
“Mr. Nagesh Babu, parent of Sai pranavi said “My daughter is very happy to attend school. She has never troubled the parents till now. Her English spelling is good for her age now. We too feel as if it is our home”.
Mr. Naveen, parent of Nysa, said, “More than education at this age, children need care and love with some activities, which my kid is getting. She is enjoying her school reciting rhymes and spelling alphabets. The school is really good”.
Ms. Sarala, Mother of Adya Jagadisha said “The school is very good and noise free and my kid have developed quite fast here. I am happy with the teaching methods and care”.

Beware of 'Chinese' eggs!
F
or all the proteins that a humble egg packs in itself, having an egg might be a health hazard, if the reports of fake eggs flooding the Kerala markets are anything to go by. A regional TV news channel 'exposed' the fake eggs being sold in the markets of Idukki district, following which there have been reports of raids and confiscation of the fake eggs in other parts of the state, too. Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has, reportedly, directed the state food safety commissioner to probe the matter. Though the origins of the 'Chinese' eggs, as they are being referred to, are yet to be known, some reports suggest they are coming in from Tamil Nadu. How to check for 'Chinese eggs' There is little in terms of appearance to differentiate between a real and a fake egg. The shell of the fake egg is slightly harder and rougher than that of a real one and there is a rubbery lining inside the shell. On tapping a fake egg lightly, you will hear a less crisper sound than you
would hear in case of a real egg. If you break the egg and keep it for some time, the egg white and the yolk will soon mix with one another, since they are essentially made from the same ingredients. The fake eggs do not stink even if cooked and kept in the open for days, and do not attract ants or flies. When you fry a fake egg, the yolk will be spread without being touched unlike a real egg. How they are made The fake egg white is made by mixing sodium alginate to warm water, and then adding gelatin, alum and benzoic acid to the mixture. The same mixture is used to make both the yolk, by adding a yellow colouring agent, and to make the fake egg membrane, by adding calcium chloride to it. The fake egg shell is made from calcium carbonate, paraffin wax and gypsum powder. And if you are wondering why take all the trouble to produce artificial eggs, then know this—it is much quicker to make an egg than to wait for a hen to lay one!

It is Summer! Snakes are out, Beware!
nakes can be found quite commonly in Bengaluru. Here's a quick guide to what you need to do in case you spot one or are bitten by one. Snake! The very word seems to evoke a feeling of terror in the mind of the average person; but if one has better knowledge of these creatures, one can see that much of the dread is misplaced. If the snake is moving constantly keep a watch on it from a safe distance. If the snake is coiled up or resting nothing much to worry, do not disturb it but do keep a watch. Call any of the animal welfare organizations in Bangalore and they will help retrieve the snake. Not all snake bites are venomous. General symptoms of a bite from a venomous snake: Wound site: Fang marks, discoloration, burning sensation, blistering of skin, local pain, oedema, bleeding from the wound that does not seem to stop, bleeding gums, progressive swelling of the bitten limb, drooping eyelids, difficulty in speaking, difficulty in breathing, drowsiness, unsteadiness. Render First Aid, calm and reassure the patient. Only a small percentage of snakebites prove serious. Panic can increase the
heart rate and speed the spread of venom in the body. Remove any constricting items worn by the patient such as bangles, bands, bracelets, finger rings, watch and so on. Completely immobilize the patient: Lay them down and keep them still. Splint the bitten limb to prevent movement. A bitten leg should be splinted from below the ankle to the top of the thigh, and then strapped to the other leg to keep the entire lower half of the body still. A bitten arm should be splinted from the fingertips to the shoulder, and then strapped firmly (not tightly) to the side of the body. Keep the wound clean; do not apply mud, manure or other poultices, if the wound requires washing use uncon-

apan, is a country which has several credentials attached to it. Being a small Nation geographically, it is now one of the most advanced countries in the World coming up with many innovations and inventions. It has to its credit, a newspaper organization which has shown the way to recycle a paper which is of no use once it is read. This recycled newspaper can now be sown and grown in to a plant by tearing the paper into pieces and watered. The paper actually blooms! It is no longer a paper, but a plant. This is no longer news to the people of that country, since it exists since years now and is in the market. One of Japan’s most famous National Dailies, ‘Mainichi Shimbunsha’, innovated a one hundred percent sustainable newspaper. The publisher of this newspaper is credited with the accomplishment. If it is planted, it blooms! This newspaper is called as ‘Green Newspaper’. The paper is made of recycled and vegetable paper along with water and small flowers or herbal seeds. The process can be made at

The eco-friendly newspaper has had a huge success, a circulation of over four million copies a day across the country and revenues of about eighty million yen, equivalent to over $700,000. The initiative has also involved schools, in order to raise children’s awareness on environmental issues and teach them the importance of recycling, in order to reduce CO2 emissions generated by traditional waste disposal systems, waste materials, and paper most of all. home too and reused in a creative way thus. It has to be just torn into small pieces, planted and watered. In a few weeks’ time the same will turn into plants and flowers, the eco – friendly newspaper that is! The idea was conceived by Dentsu

taminated water to gently clean it. Do not allow the person to walk or move about; keep them completely immobile and take them to hospital as soon after the bite as possible. The victim should be kept warm. The only remedy for venomous snakebite is anti-venom serum. Polyvalent anti-venom serum is effective against the bites of the Big Four: Common Cobra, Saw-scaled Viper, Common Krait, Russell's viper. Only if safely possible, try and get a good look at the snake (or photograph it) to help the doctor identify it, and treat the bite accordingly. Do not give sedatives to calm the patient. Do not tie an electric cable, string or rubber tourniquet or ligatures, and do not cut the bite site, or the bitten limb. Do not use ice packs, electric shock or suction at the site of bite. Do not elevate the limb. Do not use potassium permanganate. Do not let the patient walk or run; keep them absolutely immobilized. Do not administer alcoholic beverage or any medication. Do not give food or water, as both may be a choking hazard if the person vomits. Do not waste time with quack ‘remedies' such as ‘snake stones', or chanting mantras. Go for anti-venom serum without delay.

The priest became very happy and left for home and he again saw someone who needed help but he chose to ignore again. Upon reaching home, he safely put the diamond in an empty pot of water with a plan to cash it out later and live a wealthy life. His wife was not at home. He was very tired so he decided to take a nap. In between, his wife came home and
picked up that empty pot of water, walked towards the river close by to fill up the water. She had not noticed the diamond in the pot. Upon arriving at the river, she put the whole pot into the running river water to fill it up. She filled up the pot but the diamond was gone with the water flow! When the priest woke up, he went to see the pot and asked his wife about the diamond.

Diet for weight loss As a general rule, the best way to lose weight is to eat several small meals throughout the day. When your body is deprived of sufficient calories, your metabolism will slow down, and the process of fat burning in your body stops. Here are the steps you need to follow to kick-start the One Meal A Day Diet: As always, make plans to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner. The twist will be that two meals should be made of liquid foods, consisting of juices made of fruits and veggies, broths and soups, and protein shakes and herbal teas. Drink as much as you require to feel satiated and to ensure that a constant level of energy is maintained. Research has shown that drinking natural substances is beneficial as it gives you stamina. Beetroot juice is great as it enhances your body’s endurance power. Also, you can opt for fruit milkshakes, which are rich in carbohydrates and are low-fat, enabling your body to achieve optimal performance during workouts. Have your one meal of the day during lunch or dinner time. However, experts recommend taking this one meal at night as it is more suitable for the one-meal plan. Make sure that you eat lean proteins such as chicken or fish and that the meal does not have a high oil or fat content. Also, avoid having fried foods. You should also remember to add at least a cup of veggies that are non-starchy and one to two whole-grain servings as well to your meal. This will help your body get better acquainted with foods that are healthy. It is important that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. You should drink at least 8 glasses daily; you can increase the number if you are not drinking too many cups of other liquids like tea. Water is essential as it helps in keeping your metabolism active, maintaining hydration levels and flushing out toxins that are released by the dieting process. It is important to find ways to deal with low energy and cravings. Obviously, eating just once daily is not an easy endeavor and it can make you weak and dizzy. You may also find concentrating difficult. Do not depend solely on caffeine to give you energy; instead, keep yourself active to feel energetic. Always make it a point to have a small snack, like a few nuts, so that your energy is pumped up before you start a workout. Avoid Alcohol And Cigarettes Opt For Light Exercise It also makes it easier for you to follow this diet plan.

that are longer than their legs and tend to walk on all four limbs at certain times – a movement that is called knuckle walking. Adult males are known as 'silverbacks' due to the distinctive silver-colored hair on their backs. Gorillas' appearances can vary based on sub-species, but for the most part, the western subspecies tend to be brownish gray in color, while the eastern and mountain gorillas tend to have a more blackish coat. Mountain gorillas also have longer and thicker fur which is adapted to their colder mountainous habitat. The three lowland subspecies of gorillas sport short, fine hair. Eastern lowland gorillas are the largest of the four subspecies. Diet: Gorillas are herbivores and eat leaves, shoots, roots, vines and fruits. Population: Eastern lowland gorilla numbers have rapidly declined to below 5,000 today. Critically endangered, there are fewer than 300 Cross River gorillas. Mountain gorillas, another endangered subspecies, number at around 700. A recent survey has shown that there are around 150,000-200,000 western lowland gorillas. Range: Eastern lowland gorillas are found in part of the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Uganda and Rwanda, while mountain gorillas are only found within the Virunga mountain region straddling the DRC, Rwanda and Uganda borders, as well as the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda. Western lowland gorillas inhabit Cameroon, Nigeria, the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, eastern DRC, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Angola. Cross River gorillas are confined to a small region in Nigeria and Cameroon. Behavior Gorillas are ground-dwelling and live
in groups of 6-12 with the oldest and largest silverback leading a family of females, their young and younger males called blackbacks. The silverback makes the decisions on when his group wakes up, eats, moves and rests for the night. Because he must protect his family at all times, the silverback tends to be the most aggressive. In such situations, he will beat his chest and charge at the perceived threat. Gorillas are shy animals that are most active during the day. At dusk, each gorilla constructs a ‘nest’ of leaves and plant material in which it will sleep. Mothers usually share their nests with nursing infants. Young males may leave their family groups as they become older and either live as solitary silverbacks or create their own family groups. The silverback has the exclusive rights to mate with the females in his group.

City to get Pod Taxis for Quicker Commute Soon
P
ersonal rapid transit (PRT), also referred to as pod cars, is a public transport mode featuring small automated vehicles operating on a network of specially built guide ways. PRT is a type of automated guide way transit (AGT), a class of system which also includes larger vehicles all the way to small subway systems. PRT vehicles are sized for individual or small group travel, typically carrying no more than 3 to 6 passengers per vehicle. Guide ways are arranged in a network topology, with all stations located on sidings, and with frequent merge/diverge points. This allows for nonstop, point-topoint travel, bypassing all intermediate stations. The point-to-point service has been compared to a taxi or a horizontal lift (elevator). BBMP, is now looking at the option of employing a Personal Rapid Transit system (Pod Taxis), which is something the authorities are hopeful will solve most of the traffic woes in the IT capital of India and cater to last-mile connectivity. PRT is a mode of public transport that provides personal, on-demand, and origin-todestination travel throughout a network of dedicated guide ways. This project is being planned for the city, and once implemented, would be
