‘Are You Healthy’, A Woman Health awareness Programme Organised
L
ioness Club of HSR layout organized a programme, ‘Are you Healthy’, with emphasis on women health, prevention and cure. The programme was on July 22, at Bhoomi Diagnostics Pvt Ltd., near Water Tank, sector 2, HSR layout. In this connection, the club had a panel of experts on various departments in the field of medicine who had an open discussion with the women who had gathered. The programme drew an immense response from the women not due to curiosity but because of gaining information to ready themselves on health issues. The expert doctors who discussed and spoke on their specializations were Dr. Rajeev Bashetty, Consultant Urologist, on urinary infection, Dr. N Pushpa, Consultant, Preventive Healthcare, on menopose, Dr. Sashank, Consultant Dental Surgeon, on care of teeth and gums, Ms. Ankitha Bajaj, Dietician, on the
focus on nutrition and Dr. (Wgcdr) A Nagasubramaniam, on general health and medicine. The open discussion with doctors on women's health issues like thyroid, calcium, menopause and cervical and breast cancer had many takers among the gathering. Dr. Pushpa said that “Menopause is a completely natural biological process, and therefore not a problem to solve. And although it concludes the time in
a woman’s life for fertility, you can stay healthy, vital and sexual through your 50s and well beyond. That being said, there is generally a hormonal shift that occurs in women during menopause that may lead to mood swings, hot flashes, insomnia and other common symptoms”. The Most Common Menopause Symptoms • Irregular periods: As perimenopause begins (the period
before menopause technically starts), periods can come and go, plus get heavier or lighter at times. This can sometimes continue for several years during menopause • Hot flashes and night sweats • Mood swings, irritability, anxiety or depressive symptoms • Vaginal dryness and decreased sex drive • Increased abdominal fat and weight gain • Insomnia and changes in sleep quality • Thinning hair and dryer skin • Going to the bathroom more often • Breast changes (including breasts becoming smaller or losing volume) • Changes in the uterus, ovaries and cervix • For some, a higher risk for certain other age-related diseases (including cardiovascular diseases, dementia and osteoporosis)

<< Continued from Page 1 >> Natural Treatment for Menopause Eat Foods that Help Manage Menopause Symptoms • Organic fruits and vegetables, Cruciferous vegetables Water: Aim for 8 glasses daily to help replace fluid lost from hot flashes and to decrease bloating. Get regular exercises, brisk walking for 40 minutes and get enough sleep. Dr Rajeev Bashetty, speaking on urinary infection, said “Urinary tract infections (UTI) are some of the most
frequent clinical bacterial infections in women, accounting for nearly 25 percent of all infections. More than 50 percent of women will develop UTI or its symptoms in their lifetimes, and because antibiotics are the most common conventional treatment for UTIs, bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics and recurring infections are a major concern. For this reason, it’s important to use home remedies for UTIs that eliminate bacteria completely and reduce the risk of developing recurrent urinary tract infections”. In order to reduce the risk, “Drink Plenty of Fluids, Urinate Often, Stay Clean and Dry, Avoid Using Spermicides, Probiotics”. Speaking on the care of teeth and gums, Dr Shasank, emphasized that it is equally important that one has good teeth and gums for a healthy living.
“Do not ignore them”, he said. He added, “You can prevent most problems with teeth and gums by taking these steps - Brush your teeth 2 times a day with fluoride (FLOORide) toothpaste, floss between your teeth every day, visit a dentist regularly for a checkup and cleaning, cut down on sugary foods and drinks, don't smoke or chew tobacco”. Diet and Nutrition Tips for Women Ms. Ankitha Bajaj, said “Eating right is the best way to look and feel your
best at every stage of life”. She emphasized “Trying to balance the demands of family and work or school—and coping with media pressure to look and eat a certain way—can make it difficult for any woman to maintain a healthy diet. But the right food can not only support your mood, boost your energy, and help you maintain a healthy weight; it can also be a huge support through the different stages in a woman’s life. Healthy food can help reduce PMS, boost fertility, make pregnancy and nursing easier, ease symptoms of menopause, and keep your bones strong. Whatever your age or situation, committing to a healthy, nutritious diet will help you look and feel your best and get the most out of life. Eat lots of green vegetables, fruits, expose to sun because vitamin D is very important”.
What it takes to be successful? E
veryone dream to make it big in life but only few know how to achieve it. Only some people are successful and others not so successful. Even those who succeed may lead an unhappy life as they succumb to the stress of life. Why is it so? They burn themselves going behind only pay packages and loose the fun of doing a job. In the workplace I have seen everyone wants to perform at his or her optimum potential. But how many are able to achieve their goals – personal or organisational. Do they lack in performance of their task? It is not about performance. Many don’t sharpen the saw. They continue to do the same thing without improving the quality. They get out dated soon. In order to be relevant in times we live, two things are most important. One is to keep learning and updating the skills and reinventing oneself. The other is to develop a positive attitude and outlook in life. If these two things are followed then there is no chance that any one will fail at all in life. But unfortunately the truth is both these simple steps are neglected by most of us. Most of the time, it is because we have not understood our self and our potential. What it takes to develop oneself? Let us see, how you have to equip yourself in life today, in order to withstand the stress and strain of day to day life and be successful. In any field of work an achiever will keep focussing and improve his “ASK”. Where A is for Attitude, S is for Skills

Control Emotions
eeling stuck in negativity? Talking to yourself may help you control emotions without taking any additional mental effort, researchers say, adding the talk has to be in third person. The findings suggest that third-person self-talk may constitute a relatively effortless form of emotion regulation than using first person self-talk -- the way people normally talk to themselves. Third-person self-talk may also act as an on-the-spot strategy for regulating one's emotions, as many other forms of emotion regulation require considerable thought and effort, the researchers said. 'Essentially, we think referring to yourself in the third person leads people to think about themselves more similar to how they think about others, and you can see evidence for this in the brain,' said Jason Moser, Associate Professor at the Michigan State University in the US. 'That helps people gain a tiny bit of psychological distance from their
experiences, which can often be useful for regulating emotions,' Moser added. For the study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, the team involved two experiments. In the first experiment, participants viewed neutral and disturbing images while their brain activity was monitored by an electroencephalograph. When participants' reacted to the disturbing photos (such as a man holding a gun to their heads), in third person, their emotional brain activity decreased very quickly (within one second). In the second experiment, participants reflected on painful experiences from their past while their brain activity was measured using functional magnetic resonance imaging, or FMRI. The results showed that participants displayed less activity in a brain region that is commonly implicated in reflecting on painful emotional experiences when using third person self-talk, suggesting better emotional regulation.

Always give respect and Care to others` feelings
nce upon a time, there lived a herd of eighty thousand elephants at the bottom of the majestic Himalayas. Their leader was a magnificent and rare white elephant who was an extremely kind-hearten soul. He greatly loved his mother who had grown blind and feeble and could not look out for herself. Each day this white elephant would go deep into the forest in search of food. He would look for the best of wild fruit to send to his mother. But alas, his mother never received any. This was because his messengers would always eat them up themselves. Each night, when he returned home he would be surprised to hear that his mother had been starving all day. He was absolutely disgusted with his herd. Then one day, he decided to leave them all behind and disappeared in the middle of the night along with his dear mother. He took her to Mount Candorana to live in a cave beside a beautiful lake that was

A forester from Benaras had lost his way in the forest and was absolutely terrified. He had come to the area to visit relatives and could not find his way out. On seeing this big white elephant he was even more terrified and ran as fast as he could. The elephant followed him and told him not to be afraid, as all he wanted to do was to help him. He asked the forester why he was crying so bitterly. The forester replied that he was crying because he had been roaming the forest for the past seven days and could not find his way out. The elephant told him not to worry as he knew every inch of this forest and could take him to safety. He
then lifted him on to his back and carried him to the edge of the forest from where the forester went on his merry way back to Benaras. On reaching the city, he heard that King Brahmadutta’s personal elephant had just died and the King was looking for a new elephant. His heralds were roaming the city, announcing that any man who had seen or heard of an elephant fit for a King should come forward with the information. The forester was very excited and immediately went up to the King and told him about the white elephant that he had seen on Mount Candorana. He told him that he had marked the way and would require the help of the elephant trainers in order to catch this fantastic elephant. The King was quite pleased with the information and immediately dispatched a number of soldiers and elephant trainers along with the forester. After travelling for many days, the group reached the lake

besides which the elephants resided. They slowly moved down to the edge of the lake and hid behind the bushes. The white elephant was collecting lotus shoots for his mother’s meal and could sense the presence of humans. When he looked up, he spotted the forester and realized that it was he who had led the King’s men to him. He was very upset at the ingratitude but decided that if he put up a struggle many of the men would be killed. And he was just too kind to hurt anyone. So he decided to go along with them to Benaras and then request the benevolent King to be set free. That night when the white elephant did not return home, his mother was very worried. She had heard all the commotion outside and had guessed that the King’s men had taken away her son. She was scared that the King would ride him in to battle and her son would definitely be killed. She was also worried that there would be no one to look after her or even feed her, as she could not see. She just lay down and cried bitterly. Meanwhile her son was led in to the beautiful city of Benaras where he was given a grand reception. The whole city was decorated and his own stable was gaily painted and covered with garlands of fragrant flowers. The trainers laid out a feast for their new state elephant who refused to touch a morsel. He did not respond to any kind of stimuli, be it the fragrant flowers or the beautiful and comfortable stable. He just sat there looking completely despondent. The worried trainers went straight to report the situation to their King, as they were scared that the elephant would just waste away without any food or water. The King was extremely concerned when he heard what they had to say and went to the stable himself. He offered the elephant food from the royal table and asked him why he grieved in this manner. He

thought that the elephant should be proud and honored that he was chosen as the state elephant and would get the opportunity to serve his King. But the white elephant replied that he would not eat a thing until he met his mother. So the King asked him where his mother was. The elephant replied that she was back home on Mount Candorana and must be worried and hungry as she was blind and had no one to feed her and take care of her. He was afraid that she would die. The compassionate King was touched by the elephant’s story and asked him to return to his blind, old mother and take care of her as he had been doing all along. He set him free in love and kindness. The happy elephant went running home as fast as he could. And he was relieved to find that his mother was still alive. He filled his trunk with water and poured it over his sick mother who thought that it was raining. Then she cried out as she thought that some evil spirit had come to harm her and wished and prayed that her son was there to save her. The white elephant gently bent over his blind mother and stroked her lovingly. She immediately recognized his touch and was overjoyed. Her son lifted her up and told her that the kind and compassionate King of Benaras had set him free and he was here to love and look after his mother forever. His mother was absolutely thrilled and blessed the kind King with peace, prosperity and joy till the end of his days. She was so thankful to him for sending her son back home. The white elephant was able to take good care of his mother till the day she died. And when he died himself, the King erected a statue of him by the side of the lake and held an annual elephant festival there in memory of such a caring and noble soul.
Moral: Always give affection and care to our dear ones. Always respect other’s feelings.
