Isaac and Rebekah Genesis 24 When Abraham was old and his son Isaac was grown, Abraham wanted to find a wife for Isaac. He said to his servant, “Go to the land of my relatives and find a wife for my son.” The servant agreed to go. He took with him ten of Abraham’s camels and all kinds of gifts. When he got to the land, he went to a well. It was evening, and he knew the women from the town would soon come to the well to get water. The servant wanted to find the right wife for Isaac, so he prayed. “God, help me find a wife for Isaac. I will ask a girl for a drink of water. If she is the one Isaac should marry, let her also give water to my camels.” When the servant looked up, he saw Rebekah. She was beautiful and had never been married. The servant asked her for a drink of water. “Drink,” she said. “I will also give water to your camels.”
Abraham’s servant watched Rebekah. When the camels had enough water, the servant gave Rebekah a gold ring and two bracelets. “Whose daughter are you?” he asked. Rebekah said, “I am the daughter of Bethuel.” The servant asked to stay at her father’s house. Then the servant praised God for providing a wife for Isaac. Rebekah ran home and told her family what had happened. Rebekah’s brother Laban invited Abraham’s servant into their home. The family set a meal before the servant, but he did not want to eat. “First, let me tell you why I am here,” he said. The servant told them about Abraham and Isaac and how God showed him that Rebekah should be Isaac’s wife. Rebekah’s family believed that God wanted Rebekah to be Isaac’s wife. The servant brought out gifts for Rebekah and her family. The next day, Rebekah went with Abraham’s servant to the land of Canaan. In the evening, Isaac was walking in the field when he saw the camels coming. Rebekah got down from her camel and covered herself with her veil. The servant told Isaac everything that had happened. Isaac married Rebekah and loved her. Christ Connection: God provided Rebekah as a wife for Isaac as part of His covenant to bless the whole world through Abraham’s family. One day, Jesus would be born into Abraham’s family as the promised Savior. 3-5th Grade Discussion & Bible skills Distribute Bibles and ask kids if they know what the first five books of the Bible are called. (Pentateuch [PEN tuh tyk]) Explain that the word pentateuch means “five books.” Challenge kids to name the first five books of the Bible. (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) Comment that these five books were written by Moses. Guide kids to find Genesis 24 in their Bibles. Choose a volunteer to read aloud Genesis 24:40. Say • Abraham knew that for God’s promise to continue through Isaac, Isaac needed to have a family. So Abraham told his servant to go to Abraham’s homeland and find a wife for Isaac. God made it clear that Rebekah was the wife He chose for Isaac. Ask the following questions. Lead the group to discuss: God provided a wife for Isaac. What does He provide for us? Prompt kids to consider the many ways He provides for their needs. Highlight God’s provision for their greatest need in sending Jesus to be the Savior of the world. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Phil. 4:19.) Does God care about the small details of our lives? Lead kids to realize that God created them and cares about them. He even knows the number of hairs on their heads! (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Luke 12:7.) How can knowing that God is powerful and in control help us to trust Him? Guide kids to recall that God is faithful and does everything for His glory and our good. Emphasize that He is our loving Father who has unlimited power, so His plans always come to pass. (Option: Choose a volunteer to read Isa. 14:24.)
Babies and Toddlers

The servant was so happy, he praised God. He gave Rebekah bracelets and a ring. The servant went to Rebekah’s house and told her family everything that happened. Rebekah and the servant traveled back to Canaan, and Isaac and Rebekah were married. Gospel Gems Abraham’s servant trusted God to help him. God chose Rebekah to be Isaac’s wife. God kept His promise to Abraham’s family.
Quick and Easy Activities
PreK-5th Grade Spot It! Explain to your kids that they are going to play a game in which they try to quickly find a hidden object without letting other players know where it is. Show the object and then choose one person to hide it in the room where it can be seen or partially seen while the rest of the players close their eyes. Have everyone open their eyes and begin looking for the object. Players may only use their eyes. See which player can find the object first. Take turns hiding the object and finding it. Say • Did you spot what you were looking for? In our Bible story today, a servant went to find a wife for Isaac. He asked God to help him spot her. Watering Relay With your family or life group, form two teams. Give each player a cup. Position a bucket with water next to each team and an empty bucket at the end of a grassy space. When you say go, the first player will scoop water from the bucket, walk carefully across the grass and pour it into the empty bucket and then run back to the start. The next player does the same. Players keep going until all the water has been moved from one bucket to the other. Say • In Bible times, getting water was hard work. A person had to go to a well with a jug or bucket and then carry the water back home. In our Bible story today, Abraham’s servant went to a well. He was looking for something. What was it? We’ll find out!
Play Dough Family
Invite kids to use play dough or modeling clay to create members of a family, such as a father, a mother, and children. For an extra challenge, invite them to create a camel. (If you do not have play dough, kids could draw a family instead.) Say • Good job forming families out of the play dough! When God gave Isaac a wife, He formed a new family. Only Isaac’s family wasn’t made out of clay, it was made out of real people!
1-4 Year Olds
Play Animal Charades Play out being an animal using motions and noises and invite preschoolers to guess what animal you are pretending to be. Invite preschoolers to play out animals of their choice. Play as long as preschoolers are interested. End the game by pretending to be a camel. Say • The servant knew that Rebekah was the woman God had chosen as Isaac’s wife because she kindly offered to draw water for his camels. God was faithful to help the servant find Isaac a wife. Why can we trust God? We can trust God because He is faithful. Run a camel relay Have your child hold a ball or pillow behind his back to be his camel’s bump. Holding the ball, he will run to you. You will pretend to give him water, and he will run back to the starting point. Say: God made a promise. Abraham’s servant asked God to help him, and God did! God chose Rebekah to be Isaac’s wife. God kept His promise to Abraham’s family. Scoop water Provide a plastic bin and set it on a drop cloth or towels. Fill the bin with just enough water for toddlers to scoop water with plastic ladles. Keep towels handy to clean up any spills. Briefly retell the Bible story as toddlers play. Say: God made a promise. Abraham’s servant asked God to help him find a wife for Isaac. God chose Rebekah to be Isaac’s wife. God sent Jesus through Isaac and Rebekah’s family.
