Read: The BIBLE Story Sin Entered the World Genesis 3 God gave the first two people, Adam and Eve, a beautiful garden to call home. He gave them everything they needed, and He gave them one command. God said, “You may eat from any of the trees in the garden, except for one.” The garden had a tree in it called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned Adam, “If you eat from that tree, you will die.” Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals. One day, the serpent went to Eve. “Did God really say, ‘You can’t eat from any tree in the garden’?” he asked. Eve answered, “We can eat the fruit from the trees in the garden, but God told us not to eat from the tree in the middle of the garden. He said if we eat the fruit or touch it, we will die.” “No! You will not die,” the serpent lied. The serpent told Eve that she and Adam would be like God. They would know good and evil. Eve looked at the fruit. It did look delicious, and she wanted to be wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Eve also gave some of the fruit to Adam, who was with her, and he ate it. Then their eyes were opened, and they knew they were naked. Adam and Eve sewed together fig leaves and made clothes for themselves.
That evening, Adam and Eve heard God walking in the garden. They hid among the trees. God called out to Adam, “Where are you?” Adam said, “I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid.” God asked Adam, “Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” Adam blamed Eve. “She gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it,” he said. Eve blamed the serpent. “He tricked me,” she said. God said that bad things would happen. Life would be hard and painful, all because of sin. The snake would crawl on its belly and be an enemy to people. But God promised that one of Eve’s descendants would destroy the serpent. Everything changed after Adam and Eve sinned. They were not close to God like before. Sin separated Adam and Eve from God. God made them clothes out of animal skins and then sent them out of the garden. God put angels and a sword of fire at the entrance of the garden to guard the way to the tree of life. Christ Connection: Ever since Adam and Eve sinned, all people have been sinners. Our sin separates us from God, but God still loves us. God promised a Rescuer would come from Eve’s family. God sent His Son, Jesus, to rescue people from sin and bring them back to God.
Do: Optional Family Activities (K-5th) Option 1: Don’t come down Invite your family (or Life Group) to have a competition. Explain that you can only win by jumping up and staying in the air. Whoever can stay in the air the longest wins. Say • We can’t stay in the air after jumping because gravity always pulls us back to the earth. It’s impossible not to come down after jumping up. On our own, we also cannot obey God. We have sin in our lives, and it is impossible for us to please God. Option 2: Ink blotch art Make ink blotches on various sheets of paper. Provide each one with an ink blotch and invite them to use crayons or markers to turn it into a piece of art. Say • Adam and Eve broke God’s law, and their sin separated them from God. Thankfully, that is not the end of the story. Despite sin and evil entering the world, God had a plan all along to show His love and goodness through Jesus. God can turn even the ugliest mess of sin into something beautiful. Option 3: Beanbag toss Use masking tape or painter’s tape to outline a target (three concentric circles) on the floor at one side of the room. Instruct players to take turns tossing a beanbag toward the target. Award a point for each beanbag that lands in the center circle. For an added challenge, require each player to toss the beanbag with her non dominant hand. Say • How often did your team miss the mark? The word sin comes from a Greek word that means “to miss the mark.” When we sin, we miss the mark of God’s standard for us.
Reflection and prayer (5 minutes) Give a sheet of paper to each child. Ask the kids to write about or draw a picture to answer the following questions: What does this story teach me about God or about the gospel? What does this story teach me about myself? Whom can I tell about this story? Activity page (attached in PDF) Invite kids to complete “The Fall Word Search” on the activity page. Kids should find and circle the words hidden in the puzzle. Choose a few of the words to discuss: sin is breaking God’s law; serpent is a word for a large snake; evil means “something that is harmful or bad”; good means “something that is right or proper.” Say • All of these words are related to the Bible story we will hear today. Listen carefully to the story to find out what happened.
Do: Optional Family Activities (1yrs-PreK) Play “Simon Says” Explain to your kids that you will be Simon. You will give them instructions to follow, but children should only obey those instructions that begin with “Simon says.” Gently correct kids who did an action that Simon did not say rather than sitting them out. After a few rounds, choose some one else to be Simon and play again. Continue playing with new Simons as time allows. Say • Good job doing what Simon said! In today’s Bible story, God said Adam and Eve—the two first people —could eat from any tree in the garden except for one. God said they must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Do you think Adam and Eve did what God said or not? We will find out in today’s Bible story. Move like animals (print from PDF) Print and cut out the “Animal Movement Cube” printable. Assemble the cube and secure it with tape. Invite a child to toss the cube. Read the instructions aloud. Have your child lead your family (or life-group) to move like the selected animal. Mention today’s Bible story each time the snake is selected. Say • In today’s Bible story, a serpent tricked Eve. A serpent is a snake. God loved Eve. He was angry that the serpent tricked her. God punished the serpent. God said that the serpent would crawl on its belly and be an enemy to people. God promised that someone would come from Eve’s family to get rid of the serpent once and for all. Let’s hear what happened in today’s Bible story. Identify sin Give everyone a paper plate (or paper). Invite them to draw a happy face on one side of her plate and a sad face on the other. Define sin as “breaking God’s rules.” Explain that we sin when we do the things God says do not do. We also sin when we do not do the things God says to do. Tell your kids that you will call out an action, if the action is a sin, kids will hold up their sad face. If the action is not a sin, kids will hold up their happy face. Use the actions in the margin or create your own. Say • Sin came into the world when Adam and Eve broke God’s one rule. Everything was different after Adam and Eve sinned. Since then, everybody has sinned—that includes you and me. Sin keeps us from God, but God never stops loving us. He sent Jesus to rescue people from sin and bring them back to Him.

STORY POINT: ADAM AND EVE BROKE GOD’S ONE RULE.
Sin Entered the World Genesis 3

Bible Story for Toddlers Adam and Eve lived in God’s beautiful garden. They got to be with God every day. They ate from the trees in the garden. God gave them just one rule. “Do not eat from the tree in the middle of the garden,” God said. “If you do, you will die.” One day, a snake tricked Eve. He said, “You will not die. If you eat from that tree, you will be wise like God.” Adam and Eve believed the snake’s lie, and they ate the fruit. They broke God’s one rule, and they hid from God. But God knew what they had done. God made Adam and Eve leave the garden, but He did not stop loving them. God promised to send Jesus to make everything right. Gospel Gems God made people to think and choose. Adam and Eve chose not to obey God. God loves us even when we make wrong choices.
