What is Inflammation?
Inflammation is a protective tissue response to injury or destruction of tissues, which serves to destroy, dilute, or wall off both the injurious agent and the injured tissues. The classical signs of acute inflammation are pain, heat, redness, swelling, and loss of function.
The redness is caused by increased blood flow. The swelling is partly caused by white blood cells dispatched by the immune system to destroy the attacker and repair the injury. So, obviously, inflammation is one of the body’s most important defense mechanism. Without it, we would not be able to fight bacterial infections, injuries, and destruction of tissues. So, how can inflammation be harmful?
Inflammation can be both acute and chronic. Acute inflammation is the initial response of the body to harmful stimuli. Prolonged inflammation, or chronic inflammation is characterized by simultaneous destruction and repair of the tissue from the inflammatory process.
When inflammation is appropriate, it protects us from disease but when inflammation is inappropriate or gets out of hand it can cause disease. The immune system is composed of mechanisms that continuously protects us against diseases and infections but is also responsible, when triggered, for potentially damaging autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, systemic lupus erythematosus and type 1 diabetes all of which are associated with a dysfunction of the immune system.

Keeping Your New Year Intentions Fresh and On-Track
As we enter in to the third month of the New Year, take a moment to reflect upon the intentions you set for 2022 and how you are supporting these motivations to remain top of mind.
Intentions might have included … taking more time for yourself, prioritizing loved one, reading more, incorporating frequent relaxation, disconnecting from negativity, finding joy, or expressing gratitude … and all in the spirit of refocusing, recharging, and renewing what matters the most in our lives.
This month’s STRATA Body (Spa & Salon) service highlight, the Mystic Inka Ritual, focuses on purifying, energizing, regenerating, and nourishing the body.
Enter the mystical world of the Andes and discover the healing and nurturing power of native sacred plants. Ancient Inca massage techniques inspired by the four elements of nature act in synergy with exotic aromas, comforting textures, and unique nurturing plants to create an original experience that will deeply feed your body and energize your soul.
With the use of Purple Corn (unique source of antioxidants), Lucuma (excellent source of nutrients, including production of Vitamin B), Sacha Inchi (contributes to cell renewal and skin protection), and Quinoa (support tissue repair), the elaborate full-body treatment blends harmony between humans and nature.
Mystic Inka Ritual: 60-minute service, $180 (GGRC Member Discount of 20% off applies to this service.)
