Each spring and fall Garden Spot Village connects with a local AARP Smart Driving Instructor to offer a Smart Driving Course and Refresher Course. These AARPsponsored courses help experienced drivers maintain their edge while they are behind the wheel. The instructor of the two-day course, which is typically held from 9am-1pm, includes these lessons:

• Important facts about the effects of medication on driving.

• How to reduce driver distractions.

• How to maintain the proper following distance behind another car.

• Proper use of safety belts, air bags, anti-lock brakes and new technology found in cars today.

• Techniques for handling left turns, right-of-way, and roundabouts.

• Age-related physical changes and how to adjust your driving to compensate.

Tom and Bertha Hawk, Garden Spot Village residents since September 2011, plan to take the course later this month. Tom shared that he and Bertha completed the Smart Driver Course shortly after moving to Garden Spot and took the Refresher Course each time that they were eligible. Tom says, “You would be surprised at what you learn in the course. The instructor provides refreshers on how to make left hand turns at intersections, refreshers on stopping at railroad tracks and blinking yellow lights, as well as how to parallel park. The instructor also said, if you are in a parking lot and pull into a space where you can pull through, it’s perfectly legal to pull through. In fact, it’s recommended because you don’t need to back out when you are ready to leave. Also, if you get a little nervous driving on a four lane highway, don’t worry about the center lanes; move to the right lane and don’t worry about the speed.” AARP often advertises the course saying that, people who complete a course could be eligible for a discount on auto insurance. Tom reports that he and Bertha receive a 5% discount on their auto insurance for completing the $20 course every three years. Tom believes the cost and time invested are well worth the savings.
