Garden Spot Village Continuing Education AUGUST FOCUS
Evie Hershey Art Talk / August 24 African Art & Pottery
“When you get the African mud between your toes, it pulls you back,” says Evie Hershey, a Garden Spot Village resident since August 2019.
Evie has visited Africa several times: with her daughter Rhonda, as a yearlong volunteer with Everyone Moving in Mission, with friends from church and with Garden Spot’s Travel with Purpose Team. She is coleading the Travel with Purpose team headed to serve with Missions of Hope International (MOHI) in Nairobi, Kenya, next month.
A retired art teacher, Evie found inspiration as she connected with Kenyan potters during her yearlong volunteer assignment. She learned how to make African cooking and fishing pots, starting with making the clay from scratch—a process which includes digging dirt from the ground, adding water and letting it dry in the sun until it reaches the right consistency.
She’s also participated in textile tours in East Africa, traveling to Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and the Ivory Coast.
A member of the Art Guild, Evie will share her experiences and expertise in African art and pottery at an Art Talk on Thursday, August 24, in the Theater. Her presentation will include stories and pictures from her travels in Africa. She will explore the differences in art technique and style between East Africa and West Africa.
