Seasons Of Transition

Several members of the Social Services team are walking through a season of transition. Excitement. Joy. Fun. Lack of sleep. New roles. Uncertainty. Exhaustion. It’s all part of being a new parent.

Leah Hoffner and husband Cody welcomed Sadie Rose into their home in February. Mary Beth Villafane and husband Tony rejoiced in son Corbin’s arrival in April.

Leah reflects “As much as we can prepare for new seasons of life, the changes can feel unexpected when that season arrives. With the many emotions I experience in just a single day as a new mom, it’s easy to see the hard parts. Taking time to see the beautiful moments—my baby’s giggle, the support from family and friends—helps me appreciate this newest season to the fullest.”

For most of us, the adventure of being a brand new parent is a long ago memory. However, all seasons of transition – moving into GSV or joining a GSV micro community, for example - have common threads of making us dig deep into our emotional reserves for the courage to try new things, strength to endure the steep learning curve and flexibility as we adjust to new routines.

To both residents and staff experiencing the challenges and joys of a major life change, know that you have a community surrounding you and cheering you on!

HELPING HANDS, HELPING NEIGHBORS

“There is something profoundly satisfying about sharing a meal. Eating together, breaking bread together, is one of the oldest and most fundamentally unifying of human experiences.” – Barbara Coloroso

Helping Hands volunteers offer the gift of companionship and assistance for residents who live in Skilled Nursing households at Garden Spot Village. Volunteers complete two four-hour sessions led by Clinical Dietitian Tara Philips. Tara leads the group through an interactive seminar that stresses the value of nutrition, feeding techniques, communication, interpersonal skills, safety, infection control and more. Participants are guided as they help their first resident and receive a certificate after completing all of the steps.

Luci Brown, a Garden Spot Village resident since October 2020, recently completed the training. She says, “I was pleasantly surprised at how thorough the teaching was. I was in a class with staff, so I was able to interact with them as well.”

“Because the training is solid and very thorough,” Luci continues, “you really don’t have anything to be anxious or concerned about when you begin to volunteer.”

Fran Moretti, a Garden Spot Village resident since January 2021 says, “I absolutely love volunteering with Helping Hands. When I’m headed to the households, I always tell my husband, I’m going to see my friends.” Fran volunteers at lunchtime Monday through Saturday.

Both Fran and Luci are retired nurses, but Luci stresses, “It’s very rewarding and it doesn’t take a nurse!”

Luci volunteers most Mondays and Tuesdays at lunchtime. Luci says, “I try to go twice a week. I’m pretty active in a lot of other things so I go as it suits me. I like the flexibility—that I don’t need to commit to a certain day or certain time. Plus, the staff is wonderful; they are so grateful and thankful. It’s been a very pleasant experience.”

Fran echoes Luci, “I feel very appreciated when I volunteer. Plus, I can see the wonderful care that people receive in the Skilled Nursing households. The staff truly treat people in the most respectful, best way. They treat me that way too.”

August Is Happiness Happens Month

You can never have too much HAPPY! The celebration started in 1999 with ADMIT YOU’RE HAPPY DAY on August 8. Share Some Happiness. If you make happiness a habit for a month, it won’t be hard to make it a yearlong attitude. Happiness is elusive because there isn’t an exact recipe for it, no matter how much we want one and how many scientific studies are done to help us understand happiness. Although you can’t be happy all of the time, you can be happy most of the time. You just need to recognize more of the happiness that’s already happening. Sometimes happiness is the relief and satisfaction we get when we finish cleaning the kitchen. Sometimes, it’s watching a child or pet do something that amuses us. Or sometimes it’s obvious like going to a party. But, ultimately, it’s up to us to recognize happiness.

Eight questions to get you thinking:

1. If you didn’t have any responsibilities for the day, what would you do?

2. If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

3. What’s your favorite joke?

4. What’s the last goofy thing you did?

5. What’s your favorite quote?

6. What’s the best part of your life right now?

7. What was the first concert you attended?

8. With which celebrity would you like to dine?

Happiness shared is happiness doubled, so please answer these questions and return them to Lauren (anonymous is fine).
