MARKETING
Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer
IT’S OCTOBER, WHICH MEANS THERE’S A LOT GOING ON EVERYWHERE. The annual Fall Festival is coming quickly and as we all know, it’s a wonderful event. Share-a-Meal, amazing food, treats, silent auction…the day is a blast. This year we will also host an open house at Sycamore Springs so people can see some of the homes that are available. October 21 is the 7th Annual Explore Retirement Living Open House that we’ve participated in since year one. Each year we get a fair number of first time and repeat visitors. It too is a great day. One of the things that makes it great is people’s willingness to volunteer and help out, as well as, the hospitality that you show to our visitors as they are walking around campus. I love Garden Spot Village!

SOCIAL SERVICES CONTINUED Open Enrollment for Medicare D OCTOBER 15 – DECEMBER 7
For Garden Spot residents with a traditional Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, Open Enrollment (Oct 15 – Dec 7) is the time to investigate if you should stay with the same plan for 2018 or switch to a different Prescription Drug Plan. Since plans are allowed to adjust benefits each calendar year and the medications you are taking may have changed, it is prudent to review your plan annually. It is possible to compare plans for yourself by accessing the Medicare.gov website and following links for Medicare Part D. For those of you interested in an instructional class, Jackie Berrios from our Social Service team will provide training on Monday, October 16 at 2 pm and Friday, October 20 at 10am. Register at Resident Services (6000) if you would like to participate in either class. The Social Service Team and our volunteer, Judy Shaffer (a retired GSV social worker), will also be happy to help you compare plans for 2018 using the same computer program. We will provide information and input but, as always, the decision and consequences of staying with the same plan or changing will be your responsibility. We will be trying a new format for Social Service assistance with Med D reviews; one similar to the highly successful volunteer tax assistance program. Our desire is to make appointments easier to schedule, to centralize the location, and to provide enough time slots for all Garden Spot Village residents interested in assistance. Location: Chapel Parlor To schedule an appointment: Call Resident Services (6000). They will maintain the master schedule. Please do NOT call individual social workers. Bring to your appointment: Medicare card, Insurance cards, and prescription pills in their original containers. Please note: If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, or medical insurance through the railroad or as a retirement plan benefit you will NOT want to do a review through this program. Changes in these situations should always be made through the retirement plan administrator or an insurance broker for Advantage plans.

WELLNESS OCTOBER IS STRENGTH MONTH
When we reach middle age, we begin to lose muscle mass. Our muscles literally begin to shrink and weaken. We may find it difficult to go up and down stairs. A grocery bag or laundry basket may become too heavy. We might feel wobbly when walking across the room. Weakness, difficulty with everyday activities, frail arms and legs – these are not the inevitable results of age. When it comes to aging muscles, an old saying applies: Use it or Lose it.
Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness
MARK YOUR CALENDARS…. OCTOBER 17, TUESDAY
Wear something Gaudy day 5K
Meet at the Pavilion at 8am or 3pm
Mention strength training and a vision of muscle bound weight lifters comes to mind. Most do not associate strength training with older adults. The concept is simple: Strength training is any activity that a body part exerts against resistance. Resistance may be isometric (when you tighten a muscle and hold it for several seconds) or it might involve a small weight, a household object, or an exercise band. Strength training does not require a gym (we do have one here at GSV) If you know a few simple principles and learn some basic exercises, you can strength train anywhere.
OCTOBER 27, FRIDAY, 8AM THRU NOVEMBER 6, MONDAY, 12NOON POOL CLOSED for annual Maintenance
Regular strength training leads to noticeably stronger muscles in only six to eight weeks, which is critical to maintaining health and independence.
Celebrate returning to Eastern Standard Time! We will be handing out glow sticks for our walk/run, join us at 5pm at the Pavilion.
Sign up for a Strength Equipment Orientation in our newly renovated Fitness Center. Contact Mike Hertzler (6229) or email mhertzler@gardenspotvillage.org Pick up a copy of the October Strength calendar at the Wellness Lobby or Apartment Suites Lobby. WELLNESS PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: Line Dancing, Wednesdays, 2-2:45pm, Fitness Room LINE DANCING may surprise you with all it has to offer and how you can benefit. Many people love to line dance. It is fun, good exercise and a great form of dancing, all on its own. It can also be a fun way to improve your dance skills. The same skills learned in line dancing will apply to any form of couples dancing

Red Nose Run
Celebrate the first day of Winter with a walk/run (depending upon the weather, you may get a red nose)
Line Dancing will: 1.
Teach you to dance; If you can’t dance by yourself, how can you possibly expect to dance with a partner? Line dancing teaches you to actually move your body.
2. Improve your Balance; It teaches you how to maintain your own balance while moving to the beat 3. Help you Find the Beat; Oh a big one! Staying on beat (on time) is critical in any dance whether by yourself or with someone else. Learning to find the beat and timing of any dance is critical before getting with a partner. 4. Teach you basic footwork; Learn how to do triple steps, turns and spins, rocking steps and many other steps that you will use in every form of dance. 5. Improve your confidence; It helps you overcome a feeling of having two left feet. It offers sense of pride and accomplishment and improves your coordination. 6. Provide you with a dance outlet whether you have a partner or not; Today, it seems there is a line dance for just about any song you can imagine. If not, line dances are timed to fit multiple songs, providing many dance opportunities. 7. Provide you a way to practice; You always hear that practice is necessary to improving your dance but you may not know exactly how to, or what to practice. Line dances are a perfect structured means to practice dance technique. And the list goes on and on. Join Bonnie this month. Learn some exciting line dances and have lots of fun.
