Five Ways to Wake Up Without Coffee
Skip the caffeine and try one of these energy-boosters to get your day started.
Do you roll out of bed and head straight for the coffee machine? Sure, a strong cup of joe is one way to give your am routine some get up and go, but there are caffeine-free options. Try one of these five morning pick-me-ups.
Lighten Up
Exposing yourself to light first thing in the morning triggers a natural wake-up call. When it’s dark outside, your body produces melatonin, a hormone critical in regulating sleep; when it’s light, melatonin production drops. If your schedule allows you to skip setting an alarm, try sleeping with the curtains open to let in sunlight at daybreak, signaling to your body that it’s time to wake up. Alarm a must? Consider setting it just five minutes earlier so you have extra time before work or class to soak up some morning rays.
Engage Your Sense of Smell
For a jolt that will elevate your mood and make you feel more alert, try aromatherapy. Citrus, rosemary, and peppermint are noted eye-openers. Get your dose by adding a fragrant body wash or shampoo to your shower routine.
Say Yes to Oats PUBLISHER Garden Spot Village OUR MISSION We will enrich the lives of older adults as an expression of Christ’s Love. EDITOR Colleen Musselman DESIGNER Brandon Adams PROOF READERS Ruth Buehler, Juanita Fox ILLUSTRATIONS
Skip the doughnuts and opt for a breakfast of oatmeal and orange juice. High in fiber and complex carbs, oatmeal will rev your energy level and increase your mental stamina throughout the day. Plus, the flavonoids found in a glass of OJ are linked to better brainpower.
Crank Up the iTunes
Listening to your favorite playlist does more than get your feet thumping. Music triggers arousal and signals the brain to release dopamine, which, in turn, makes you feel good. Set your alarm through the music app on your phone and you’ll find yourself getting out of bed faster.
Get Physical
Whether you head out for an early run, take a yoga class or just dance in your living room, breaking a sweat is a smart start to the day. Because exercise increases blood flow, it will boost your energy and leave your brain humming with all those good-for-you endorphins. Added bonus: You’ll concentrate better and be more focused during that morning meeting. | This article is brought to you by: www.mindful.sodexo.com |

YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF OTHERS‌ Thank You For Your 2017 Gifts and Volunteer Time
Garden Spot Village is a very special place where residents have a passion in their hearts to make a difference in the lives of others. As we begin a new year, I want to express my sincere appreciation to you for the gifts you gave in 2017 for the Benevolent Fund, Cooperative Living House and other projects. We continue to see an increasing number of residents blessing Garden Spot Village and its residents by including Garden Spot Village in estate plans through wills, charitable gift annuities, insurance policies, etc. Approximately 60 individuals are now members of the Legacy Society and we know of several who have already talked about what they hope to do in 2018 to be eligible to join the Legacy Society. Volunteers are so important for the Development Office. Your help with the Fall Festival, Golf Tournament, Angel Tree, Bird House event, Business Expo and other special projects makes it possible to raise funds to help those residents who, for reasons beyond their control, have exhausted their financial resources. Wishing you a 2018 filled with happiness, love and good health. God Bless You.
ANGEL TREE THANKS AND PICKUP
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Angel Tree project this year. What a beautiful way of keeping our loved ones in our hearts and on our minds, while decking the halls of our Chapel Lobby. The funds raised through this project benefited to the Benevolent Fund. Thank you for your kindness. Angels may be removed from the Angel Tree on Monday, January 1. On Wednesday, January 3, volunteers will be available to help find angels from 9:30-11:30am. At the end of the day, any angels not picked up will be removed from the trees and placed at the Resident Services Desk for pick up, if you wish. The angels will remain at Resident Services until January 15.

RECYCLING AS A COMMUNITY
Each of us is blessed to be part of the Garden Spot Village Community; to live, work, volunteer, learn, and grow in an atmosphere that encourages us to live the most rewarding and fruitful life possible. As a Community, we have many opportunities to serve our world on many levels. We strive to be welcoming, hosting public events and inviting community members onto our campus. We serve intentionally, giving of our time and resources to those around us through volunteering, and it is those aspects of Garden Spot Village that truly make us special. There are simple ways we can serve with that same spirit, on a daily basis, that can have a considerable impact. Our residential recycling program is designed to lower Garden Spot Village’s footprint on our world, by reducing waste that enters the landfill. It is estimated that up to 50 percent of American waste is recyclable. As a community, we have the opportunity to make a difference, by being aware and mindful of how we dispose of our waste. Please take a moment to review the signage posted in all of our trash rooms, to see how you can best dispose of your waste, as well as a list of items that are recyclable. GSV IS COMMITTED TO MAKING RECYCLING A PRIORITY. WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US IN THAT ENDEAVOR!

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Can you believe it’s 2018 already? We hope that you had wonderful holidays with family and friends, that includes all the people of Garden Spot that you have come to consider family and friends during the time that you’ve been involved with or made your home in this community. As you know, Garden Spot strives to provide you with opportunities to do things that are meaningful to you. Toward the end of last year, one of the residents who helped get the new metal shop started (paraphrasing) said, “When I moved here there wasn’t a metal shop on campus and I thought that chapter of my life was over. As I explored it and talked to others, it looked more and more like there could be an opportunity to start a metal shop. Garden Spot made space available in the pole barn on the Sycamore Springs side of the street, residents began donating equipment and materials. Now, we have a metal shop and more and more people are joining the club.” We love those stories. What new things might you explore in 2018? What can you do to involve others in meaningful pursuits? How can you enrich your life and the lives of others? Those are good questions to start the year.

Beth Oberholtzer, author of Plain Meetinghouses: Lancaster County Old Order Mennonites Gather to Worship will present this evening. Oberholtzer and John Herr, photographer, collaborated to create the book published by Schiffer Publishing in 2017. Old Order Mennonite meetinghouses dot the countryside of Lancaster County and silently embody deeply ingrained religious traditions and yet few outsiders have seen the startling utilitarian beauty of these rural structures up close. Oberholtzer and Herr were allowed rare access to 22 austere houses of worship. They created a one-of-akind book featuring over 300 photos and diagrams that document all aspects of the meetinghouses, from the design of their benches and buggy sheds to the arrangement of tables central to worship.

PERSONS WITH SPECIAL CARES WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 3, 1-2PM, CONCORD ROOM
A new time, a new place! Start the year off with the support you need! If you’re a long time attendee of the Persons with Special Cares group, you are invited to join your fellow group members for this semi-annual gathering. The purpose is to get together with others who are also learning how to live, love and support a person facing challenges. Share your stories, give updates about your loved ones, and enjoy the company of others who “get it” and understand what you’re going through. If you’ve never attended the Persons with Special Cares group, this is a great time to do so! The group is geared towards anyone – parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, friends – who have a loved one with challenges. This could range from a disability, to an addiction, to a mental health diagnosis. It’s hard watching a loved one battle such difficulties, and this is a group of individuals that understands the emotional struggle, the legal ramifications, the financial strain, and so many other aspects of caring. Mark your calendars. All are invited. Contact Jenny Snyder (6259) with questions.
