SURPRISING REASONS YOU SHOULD TAKE A WALK THIS AFTERNOON

Of course it’s great for your legs and heart, but the benefits don’t stop there. Walking has your back covered, not to mention your brain, waist, and more.

Table of Contents March Birthday Celebrations 2 Development 3 Senator Aument Town Hall 3 St. Patrick’s Day Menu 4 Mindful Taste & Learn 4 Making A Difference 5 Life Enrichment 6 Speaker Series 7 GSV TV - Channel 956 7 Around Town 8 In the Theater 8 Marketing 9 MARCH CALENDAR 10 Pastoral Services 12 Travel with Purpose 13 Social Services 14 Musical Memories 15 Saturday Evening Concert Series 15 Wellness 16 Marathon Volunteers 16 Volunteer Services 17 WellSpan Health Talks 17 Explore Something New... 18 Event Sign-Ups 20

Walking has a stellar reputation for being one of the best beginner-friendly ways to burn calories, shape up your legs, and strengthen your heart. We know. You get it. But with each step, walking is discretely improving other not-so-noticeable parts of you too. And this is why walking makes the cut as our total-body workout of choice. Check out the awesome ways hoofing it has a powerful effect on your overall health. It boosts your brainpower. Walking briskly on a regular basis improves your concentration and slows down the shrinkage of the brain that comes naturally with age. In fact, frequent strolls have recently been found to help the part of the brain responsible for long-term memory growth. Emerging evidence has also shown promise that a consistent walking routine may slash the risk of Alzheimer’s by almost half. It protects your peepers. Walking may reduce pressure within your eyes and can lower risk factors for developing glaucoma like diabetes and high blood pressure. Walking may even help treat the condition if you already have it. It opens your airways. Raising your heart rate with a good brisk walk builds your lung power. The stronger the lungs are, the easier it is for them to do their job of delivering oxygen to the rest of your muscles—an improvement that you’ll notice on future walks when you’re able to stroll farther without feeling worn out.

It manages your middle. If you walk with good posture (shoulders square, chest up, eyes forward), your core is getting an amazing workout. That’s because to hold that form you have to engage your core muscles, particularly your lower back and abdominal muscles. All that effort is building strength (bonus: no crunches required). Oh, and did we mention this hidden core workout also goes a long way toward relieving and reducing back pain? Like we said earlier, awesome. It improves your balance. Walking lets you work out on all kinds of unstable terrain like soft sand, loose rocks, and trails. Every shaky step activates other muscles throughout your entire body just so you can stabilize yourself, giving you better overall balance that you’ll be grateful for in years to come. It builds your bones. Because walking is a weight-bearing exercise (that weight being you), it helps build bone mass, which can reduce your risk of developing osteoporosis. It unclogs your veins. Walking contracts your leg muscles, which in turn lowers your risk of developing deep-vein thrombosis (a type of blood clot in the legs) by pumping blood back toward your heart. MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

COMMUNITY, PURPOSE AND OPPORTUNITIES ARE WORDS YOU HEAR A LOT AROUND GARDEN SPOT. These words are very important to everyone because they contribute to a more fulfilling life. Garden Spot has been fostering opportunities to live with purpose for a long time. One of the reasons I know that is because you (residents) tell me you experience it and you share those experiences with others. During a recent survey, after visiting, people were asked a variety of questions about their visit and experience. The one item that was cited 100% of the time, as a positive motivating factor, was interaction with staff and residents. The researcher commented, during the review, that people emphasized “positive interactions with residents that left them feeling connected and inclined towards the organization.” The researcher was amazed at how highly people spoke about you (residents). It’s always nice to hear that type of thing and I thought I’d pass it along.

WELLNESS THE WELLNESS WHEEL HIGHLIGHT FOR MARCH IS FAITH

WHAT IS FAITH? Faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1). Thus, in biblical language, faith is a living trust— an assurance—that stretches from man to God. In other words, the reality and steadfastness of God makes our faith possible. Furthermore, faith is the assurance that God’s promises will never fail, even if sometimes we do not experience their fulfillment in our human existence. Hebrews 11 underscores the fact that we trust God in order to fulfill his promises for the future (the unseen) based upon what he has already fulfilled in the past. Thus, our faith is not blind, but based squarely upon God’s proven faithfulness. Faith is not to be confused with mere knowledge. Millions worldwide have experienced the ministry of Billy Graham. They have heard him proclaim the good news on television and yet do not believe that his message corresponds with their reality. Thus, they have the knowledge that it takes to be saved but do not have saving faith. Others hear the message, agree that it corresponds with their reality, but due to the hardness of their hearts, do not bow. Rather, like the demons, they continue to live in fearful anticipation of the judgment to come (James 2:19). Some, however, have what Scripture describes as genuine justifying faith—a faith that not only knows about the gospel and agrees that its content corresponds to reality, but a faith by which they are transformed.
