A LITTLE BIRDIE TOLD ME… THE BIRD HOUSE AUCTION WAS A SUCCESS How Many Bird Clichés Can You Count?
ANNUAL BUSINESS EXPO THURSDAY, APRIL 19 A Special Event for Residents, Future Residents and Staff
Birds of a feather flock together, and we had quite the flock of bird-brains stop in to see the Bird House Display and Silent Auction during the month of February. Residents, staff and other fine-feathered friends from the community and beyond, stopped in to place bids, and check on ones they placed previously.
Would you like to learn more about our local businesses? Is there a service you require, and would like to get more information on what is available? Would you like to learn which restaurants are nearby? Are you looking for a financial planner? A new doctor? A dentist?
We had a packed theater when Dr. Rust, President of the Blue Bird Society of Pennsylvania was here to give a presentation. Dr. Rust spoke to more than 60 people, and donated his book to the library. We were fortunate to have Dr. Rust here to bring in some members of the local bird clubs. Everyone was all atwitter about the presentation. It was anything but, for the birds.
Residents, Future Residents and Staff are invited to attend the annual Business Expo on Thursday, April 19 from 10am until 2pm. Save the date for a fun opportunity to learn about the local community and what it has to offer. You can get information on local businesses, sample some tasty treats, get discounts and other helpful materials.
It wasn’t necessarily the early bird that got the worm with this silent auction though. At 5pm, when Bill George, Woodshop member, closed the auction, there was a short line of people placing their final bids, who did not want to get caught in the catbird seat.
We anticipate approximately 80 businesses will participate again this year. Exhibitors will be located in Village Square and the Indoor Park, the Chapel, Chapel lobby and on Main Street.
Many thanks to the rare birds of the Woodshop, Quilters, Crafters and Cross-Stitchers for sharing their talents, in support of the Benevolent Fund. It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds—it is their generosity and willingness to spread love through their talents. While we shouldn’t count our chickens before they hatch, we can safely say that this tenth annual event netted more than $3,000. While this bird has flown for this year, we will look forward to the creativity of the GSV talent again.
Residents will receive the exhibitor booklet in the campus mail on Friday, April 13. As in the past, this booklet will provide you with the list of businesses attending and their location at the Expo. The committee members hope you will thank the exhibitors for participating. Funds raised from the fees for this event go to the Benevolent Fund. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

MARKETING
Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer
For those living at Garden Spot Village, you may have noticed the Spring 2018 Destination Garden Spot Village magazine did not arrive in your mailbox. As part of the community-wide initiative to reduce paper, the distribution of Destination has shifted to a pick-up basis. You can find copies of the magazine in Village Square and in the Apartment Suites Lobby. Feel free to pick one up for yourself, your friends or to put in your doctor’s waiting room the next time you visit. One of your neighbors was recently in Aruba and sent me a text to tell me he was “selling” Garden Spot on our behalf. A guy he’d been talking with was planning to check out the Garden Spot Village website. We appreciate the assistance when you do things like this. Word of mouth is by far our best source of exposure! IT’S MARATHON MONTH. Many of you volunteer—thank you! We hope you’ll come out to participate in the action. The Kids run starts at 6pm Friday, April 13 and the marathon starts at 8am, Saturday, April 14. Between runners and spectators, we get several thousand visitors. It’s a great marketing event, the proceeds go the Benevolent Fund and it’s an energetic and exciting day!

—Hilda Bradney
LIVES OF SERVICE
This year Volunteer Services is focusing on service, and the many ways it enriches our own and others’ lives. This profile of Bill & Hilda Bradney is the first in a series featuring the service of our inspiring Garden Spot Village volunteers. Walking through Bill & Hilda Bradney’s home gives visitors a glimpse of their life experiences. A small cart decorated with inlaid wood representing the native woods of Costa Rica sits in the living room; a Paraguayan harp rests in the corner next to the piano, waiting to be played and a collection of elephants from India speaks to Hilda’s childhood. Bill and Hilda moved to Garden Spot Village in November 2016, after more than 55 years ministering in Latin America as well as the United States. The couple met at University of Valley Forge in September 1958 on their first evening as underclassmen. They came from very different backgrounds. Bill was born in Renovo, a small town in upstate Pennsylvania, while Hilda was born in Calcutta, India, to missionary parents. Hilda spent her childhood and young adult years in Australia, India and England before immigrating to the United States. They began to date in 1959 and married in 1961.
After pastoring in Pennsylvania for seven years, Bill and Hilda spent 20 years in Costa Rica with their three children, teaching and equipping new believers at a Bible School. In the early 1980s they moved to Paraguay, leaving established schools, churches and ministries in Costa Rica to direct a growing Bible School, open regional Bible schools and meet other needs. During each furlough, they visited former members of the first church they pastored in Pennsylvania: Edwin and Mabel Hurst at their home in Azalea Court. These times were always refreshing and memorable. When they returned to the United States in 2002 they began an assignment at University of Valley Forge as missionaries-in-residence. They taught and lectured, “persecuting the saints” as Bill says with a grin. For several years Hilda chaired the Department of Intercultural Studies and together they taught and connected with the students, encouraging them in their vision for future ministry. Hilda still serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Valley Forge and coordinates international internships. When it was time to retire and move to a new community they remembered the fond memories of Garden Spot Village and came for a tour. Bill says, “We were hesitant to move to a retirement community because we didn’t want to be surrounded by grumpy old people. But, the first time we visited Garden Spot Village, my feet were dancing because we realized this group knows how to party and we are going to have a great time.” Since moving to Garden Spot Village Bill and Hilda have volunteered as connectors for Caring Connections. They regularly visit a gentleman and, Bill says, they leave each time blessed by their visit with him. Hilda also plays her Paraguayan harp in the various care areas, as she is able. And, they apply a lifetime of teaching as they offer English as a Second Language classes and one-on-one sessions with staff who are working towards citizenship and learning English. Hilda believes true happiness lies in pouring out your life for others. She says, “The happiest people are the ones who serve others.” Bill and Hilda continue to seek God’s will for their lives and look forward to increased connections to others at Garden Spot Village. Bill says, “If you want a real adventure in life, just follow God’s leading.” — To read more about Bill and Hilda visit: www.gsvnet.org/blog —
