MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

Our Look & Learn Seminars began in 2009 when the Village Square Apartments were introduced. Many of you encourage your friends or people you meet to come to a Look & Learn. Plus, we get overwhelmingly positive feedback from visitors. It’s our most effective sales and marketing program. While it may seem expensive on the surface, it’s actually very cost effective when you consider how much it costs to place advertisements in magazines or send out direct mail campaigns. When you invite people to a Look & Learn you’re doing Garden Spot and your neighbors a huge favor because your personal invitation is far more effective than an advertisement in the newspaper. A number of residents and members of the local community have asked if we’ve ever considered doing a Look & Learn in the evening because there are people who are interested in Garden Spot but one or both are working and they can’t come during the day. Now you can also invite people to “GSV After Work” which is specifically for people who can’t learn about us during the day. The first event is Wednesday, May 9th from 5:30-7:30pm. If you know some people who are still working who you think should know more about us please have them contact Mike at the front desk or visit the Look & Learn page on the Garden Spot Village website.

It has been a horrible cold spring. I am ready to play in the community garden behind our homes here in Sycamore Springs but the garden isn’t ready yet and if the sun doesn’t come out soon, it won’t be ready until May....

WELLNESS THE WELLNESS WHEEL HIGHLIGHT FOR MAY IS ENVIRONMENT

The Pool and Spa will tentatively reopen Monday, May 14.

Environmental Wellness / Footprint - We may not think much about our Environmental Wellness as part of an overall Wellness plan, but our environment, and how we feel about it, can have a huge impact on the way we think and live.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS‌

Here are 5 simple ideas to improve the quality of your mood through your environment: EXERCISE: In addition to fitness, we can use exercise to cut down on stress and build energy. Exercise has been proven to reduce depression and anxiety, improve memory and improve overall mood. Lucky for you, the fitness center at GSV is open 24 hours a day. Call (6229) to set up an appointment. MAKE YOUR ENVIRONMENT BRIGHTER: It is harder to get sunlight while indoors, so we have to work at getting our vitamin D when we can. Keep your shades up during the day. Take a walk on the trail, or on the sidewalk around campus to get an extra mood boost. Sunlight exposure and exercise release neurotransmitters in your brain that can have a positive effect on your mood. LISTEN TO MUSIC: Throw on some tunes! A lot of us already use music to cheer us up, but did you know it has been scientifically proven to help make you happier? Listening to music can help boost your mood. Researchers have found that individuals can become happier, and cheerful music helps. GET SOCIAL SUPPORT: Humans are a social species, and social isolation has actually been shown to increase production of stress. In addition to the social and intellectual benefits you will get, interacting with others creates opportunities for fun, new perspectives and distraction from damaging and stressful processes, such as worry and brooding. As an added bonus, people who are social are at a lower risk for dementia! RELAX: Meetings, events, work, family, friends, appointments; even if you enjoy being busy, you also need some time to rest. Engaging in self-care and relaxation can help alleviate stress and improve mood. Read a good book, take a bath, try some mindful meditation, get a massage, manicure or pedicure, or pick something else that takes care of you and gives you a break from your normal activities. Be aware that occasionally, you may need to say No to extra opportunities, in order to be sure that you have some time for yourself. For copies of the daily Footprint calendar, stop by the Welcome Center or Wellness Lobby.

LIVES OF SERVICE This year Volunteer Services is focusing on service, and the many ways it enriches our own and others’ lives. This profile of Joe Woods is the second in a series featuring the service of our inspiring Garden Spot Village volunteers.

“As a volunteer, my role is to serve, in whatever way I can.”

—Joe Woods

Joe Woods drives the Jolly Trolley every Friday afternoon, greeting riders with a smile and his signature greeting, “Today is Friday. And on Fridays, all the rides are free.” Riders usually respond with a smile and a chuckle. For Joe, connecting with people, putting a smile on their faces or a smile in their hearts, is what driving the Jolly Trolley is about. He’s not just moving people from one area of the community to another—he’s serving them. His perspective makes all the difference. He drives with a servant’s heart, recognizing, greeting and acknowledging people as he drives from the Apartment Suites Lobby to Mountain View and back again. He says, “When I’m driving, I look at myself as being less important than others. I wait for people to pass and I don’t rush through doorways. I let others go first.” When he can safely do so, he also holds a conversation with his passengers, trying to ensure they have a pleasant experience. The Civil War-era kepi Joe wears as he drives, reveals his love of history. He has donated guided tours of Gettysburg to the Fall Festival Auction. The people who purchase the tours enjoy Joe’s easy storytelling style as he leads them through the battlefields, sharing the stories of the men who fought there. Joe believes the details of the battles are important, but he shares the stories of the soldiers because the people are more compelling… and telling the story of their bravery, courage and grace honors their lives and sacrifice. Joe also tells compelling stories to Garden Spot High School students through GSV/GSHS Living History partnership. A huge Penn State football fan since childhood, Joe’s favorite story to tell is the origin of “We are…Penn State.” The slogan has been tied to the 1948 Cotton Bowl, when the football team captain defended his African American teammates by saying “We are…Penn State...and we travel as a team.” The team stayed at a naval base because they couldn’t stay together in what was then segregated Dallas, Texas. Again, Joe could tell the facts of segregation in the 1940s and 1950s, but he believes that making the story relevant and unforgettable creates a greater impact on the students. Joe embodies the Garden Spot Village mission to enrich the lives of others as an expression of Christ’s love by leading devotions in Mountain View a couple of times a month. Joe says, “Any time I can show God’s love to others, it is time well spent. I always leave the devotions with a feeling of satisfaction in my heart… that I’ve brought God’s love, some reassurance and a bit of happiness to the men and women who live in Mountain View.” Joe and his wife Sally moved to Garden Spot Village in July 2013 after they followed a church friend’s recommendation to visit the community. Joe says, “We were praying that we would move to the community where God wanted us to be… The minute we walked in the door, we felt the presence of the Holy Spirit. We are so happy to be at Garden Spot Village. God knew what he was doing when he led us here.”
