SHARE-A-MEAL IS BACK FOR FALL FESTIVAL
This year marks a decade of offering Share-A-Meal as a fundraiser for the Benevolent Fund. Residents host meals in their homes and offer tickets to be sold at the Fall Festival. Tickets go on sale at 8am in the Theater, but residents can often be found joking about how you have to get up pretty early to get an early spot. It has been noted that people arrive as early as 5:30am for an early shot at meals. Fall Festival will be held this year on Saturday, October 13, 2018. A wonderful committee of residents and staff is working hard to plan Fall Festival, and we hope you might consider offering your cooking and hosting talents to benefit the Benevolent Fund. You can choose the amount of people to attend, the menu, and the date. “Last year was my first hosting Share A Meal,” said resident Bill Hunter, “I didn’t know what to expect. It was a great experience. I would highly recommend everyone either host or attend a meal. It was a very enjoyable evening making memories.” Past meal themes include: Shrimp Supreme, A Taste of England, Kansas Country Dinner, roast beef, salmon, and a modified Amish Wedding Feast! The events are a very much anticipated feature of Fall Festival. Resident Carolyn Nemec remarked, “These meals are a fun, safe way for a single adult to go out to dinner for a reasonable cost. I have had a brand new resident call to ask if she could host a meal as she attended one before moving here; she was very impressed and wanted to be part of this fun event.” If you would also like to be part of this fun event as a meal host, please contact Allison Cuthie (6153), or acuthie@gardenspotvillage.org.

In an effort to give back to the local community, Garden Spot Village adopted the Swipe Out Hunger campaign in early 2017. By converting excess meal plan dollars or giving additional donations, Garden Spot Village staff and residents are welcome to swipe their cards and make cash/check donations in support of Swipe Out Hunger. This program is designed to fund a Community Meal for people seeking a hot meal and community socialization. The Community Meal takes place at CrossNet Youth Ministries Building on Franklin Street, the fourth Monday of each month. Giving financial donations to Swipe Out Hunger supports this great program and sharing your time is also appreciated. Contact Volunteer Services (6204) to volunteer your time or to receive additional information. Garden Spot Village is the first retirement community to partner as a local chapter with Swipe Out Hunger, a trademarked, nonprofit national organization found on college campuses.

D E S T I N AT I O N M AG A Z I N E & HOW WE SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY
Keep an eye out for the next issue of Destination Magazine that comes out later this month. You can pick up a copy at Resident Services and The Apartment Suites Lobby. In the upcoming issue you will find an infographic that illustrates the ways in which Garden Spot supports New Holland & Eastern Lancaster County. A September example is the CrossNet Ministries Garden Gala. It’s hosted in the Legacy Garden, catered by Dining Services and is an important fundraiser for CrossNet. For more information see the ad on page 12. It was important to our founders that Garden Spot Village be a part of, not separate from, the greater community. One of the wonderful cultural characteristics that has resulted from that wish is the ways in which hospitality and involvement are lived out locally. It can easily be seen, through the support of events like The Garden Gala and all the good work and service, where residents are involved off-campus.

SOCIAL SERVICES NOTES ALL THINGS MEDICARE... New Card - Please bring card or a high quality copy to Social Services
By now, most of you have received your new Medicare card in the mail. Please bring your card to the Social Service offices (across from The Creamery) A copy is needed for your GSV file. Sherilyn, Jenny or Mary Beth will be happy to assist you. If you’d prefer, you may make a copy of the card yourself and deliver it to the mail slot in the door of Sherilyn’s office. Copy front and back of the card and make sure all letters and numbers are easy to read.
Security Features - Social Security number has been removed
Your new Medicare card no longer reveals your social security number. You have been assigned a mixture of letters and numbers not connected to social security. You may shred your old Medicare card and begin using the new card immediately. In line with Medicare’s attention to protecting your privacy, we have recently adjusted GSV personal Emergency Response sheets to also not reveal social security numbers. Your Emergency sheets are stored in your master bathroom medicine cabinet; a copy is sent with EMTs responding to an emergency at your residence After you give us your new Medicare number, we will scan it into the electronic file and print 3 new Emergency sheets for you that no longer reveal your social security number. This change was made very recently to our computer system, so check your Emergency sheet and bring it to Social Services if you need copies with your social security number removed.
Open Enrollment - Oct 15 - Dec 7
Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment Period will soon be here! During this important time, Medicare allows you to make changes to your medical insurance coverage and Prescription Drug plan. You may: • Change from one Prescription Drug Plan to another one • Switch back to Traditional Medicare if dissatisfied with your Medicare Advantage Plan • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to a different Advantage Plan
Medicare Part D - Prescription Drug Plans
The Social Service team will continue our annual tradition of providing no cost appointments for residents who wish to review their Medicare D plan. We enter your prescriptions into Medicare’s website and walk you through the results of plans that may be the best fit/lowest cost option. The program takes into account which plan (s) have your medications on their formulary and have the pharmacy you like as your preferred provider. If you choose to change plans, we can complete the enrollment for you. Beginning Oct 1, appointments for Medicare D reviews may be scheduled through the Resident Service Desk. (Call 6000, AFTER Oct 1). All consultations will again take place in the Chapel Parlor.
Interested in learning how to do your own Medicare D review?
Instructional classes will be offered for those interested in learning the fundamentals of how to do an online review. A step by step paper guide will also be provided to each participant. Dates will be published in the October Garden Variety. Classes will be held in the Theater and will be taught by Social Service team member, Jackie Berrios.
What should I do this month while waiting for Open Enrollment?
Watch the mail for information from your current plan. Medicare requires every plan to provide its members with notice of any changes by September 30. If your plan makes significant changes in monthly premium cost, deductibles, formularies or preferred pharmacies OR if your medication list has changed, it is especially important to consider scheduling a consultation with Social Services. We’re here to help!

WELLNESS PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT: SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING
TUESDAYS 1:30-3PM IN THE FITNESS ROOM
Scottish Country Dancing is a form of social dancing, the ballroom dance of Scotland. It became popular in the 18th century and in 1923 the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society was founded. Today there are more than 13,000 members and many more non-members worldwide. It is the forerunner of the American Square Dance; it is dancing in groups or “sets of 3 or more couples. There are about a dozen basic figures, quick time dances such as reels, jigs and a slower tempo Strathspey. Dances date from the 1700’s, with new ones constantly being devised. The music is provided by fiddle, piano, accordion, flute or drums (not bagpipes). Studies have shown that Scottish Country Dancing is a valuable activity for maintaining both physical and mental health. Join the fun – no partner or experience needed, just a pair of soft soled shoes.

GIVING SERVICE
Fiscal Year Results from Share & Care and Refresh Gifts & Essentials
Thanks to the efforts of many devoted volunteers, as well as increased promotion of Refresh Gifts & Essentials and the Share & Care thrift store as unique and appealing shopping destinations, we’re happy to report that sales during fiscal year 2017-18 resulted in record-breaking donations to the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund. Share & Care also made significant gift-in-kind donations to GSV departments and to the Cooperative Living House. Summarized below are the final numbers for the fiscal year: • Share & Care donation to Benevolent Fund $71,656.79 • Refresh Store donation to Benevolent Fund $29,933.04 TOTAL Donation $101,589.83 • Share & Care Gift-in-Kind donations: GSV departments Cooperative Living House
$1,648.00 $1,235.00
• Share & Care volunteers 43 • Refresh Gifts & Essentials volunteers 41 TOTAL Volunteers 84 • Share & Care volunteer hours • Refresh Gifts & Essentials volunteer hours TOTAL Volunteer Hours
4,591 2,837 7,428
It is important to note that this spring, new cash register systems were installed in each store. In the case of Share & Care in particular, this was a major change from the previous written log system for sales. In both stores, volunteers met the challenge impressively, training on the new system and continuing to offer great service to our customers. The new system now allows us to process prox card sales in Share & Care for staff and residents (this was already in place in the Refresh store) – an important opportunity for better serving customers and for increasing sales. The hours spent by Share & Care volunteers also represent a significant ministry to Garden Spot Village residents and their families. Volunteers often spend time helping residents and/or their families in their process of downsizing and making decisions about donations to Share & Care. This behind-the-scenes involvement is another way of making a difference in people’s lives, often during times of transition. We would like to thank all of our volunteers for their energy, dedication and creativity in support of these two initiatives that benefit the Garden Spot Village community and beyond. Thanks also to the many residents who have donated items to Share & Care, and to the residents, staff and families who are dedicated shoppers! All of you help to further GSV’s mission of enriching lives as an expression of Christ’s love.
