ANNUAL BUSINESS EXPO PLANNED FOR THURSDAY, APRIL 18 A Special Event for Residents, Future Residents and Staff Would you like to learn more about our local businesses? Is there a service you require, and would like to get more information on what is available? Would you like to learn what restaurants are around? Are you looking for a financial planner? A new doctor? A dentist? Residents, Future Residents and Staff are invited to attend the annual Business Expo on Thursday, April 18, 10am-2pm. Save the date for a fun opportunity to learn about the local community and what it has to offer. You can get information on local businesses, sample tasty treats, get discounts, and other helpful materials. We anticipate approximately 80 businesses will participate this year. Exhibitors will be located in Village Square, the Indoor Park, the Chapel and Chapel Lobby, and on Main Street. Residents will receive the exhibitor booklet in the campus in-house mail on Friday, April 12. As in the past, this booklet will provide you with the list of businesses attending and their location at the Expo. The committee members hope you will thank the exhibitors for participating. Funds raised from the fees for this event go to the Benevolent Fund. We look forward to seeing you there.

CHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITY OPPORTUNITY

There are also some possible tax benefits. Here are a few examples of single life rates. Age when gift is made Annual return for a single life 65 5.1% 70 5.6% 75 6.2% 80 7.3% 85 8.3%

LIBRARY

written by Amanda Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern For over 15 years the Garden Spot Village Library has been running day and night, cycling books in and out, new and old. But there is much more to the library than just books. There’s the sitting area to read books, play cards and computers to check email, as well as a large print reader to aid the eyes. A nice and simple set up. Some might even call it, the ‘best kept secret’ at Garden Spot Village. Behind this organization is the committee of 18, who all do their part faithfully. They not only sort, straighten and supply the books to the library, but they also take care of the library in Mountain View. While traditionally the book options were limited to three categories, mystery, Christian and non-fiction, the head of the committee, Nancy Jacobson, with the help of several others, has successfully been able to organize and expand the reading options. The library was started about 18 years ago, and over the 18 years the previous chairpersons, Marion George, Anne Gross and Nancy Wentzel established a solid foundation. Nancy Jacobson became the chairperson of the committee about 5 years ago. She always had a passion for books. After she went to college and became a school teacher, she then went back and received a Masters in Library Science. For many years she shared her passion and love of books with children. Every year in April, the Garden Spot Library has a book give away and open house to celebrate National Library week. This allows volunteers to rotate out old books and bring in new books. While the Library will occasionally buy books, most of the library is composed of donated books from residents. Garden Spot Village library is also accessible and connected to the ELANCO Library, which is located on the edge of the property. The connection between the Garden Spot Village library and the ELANCO Public Library allows residents to request and receive plus, drop off books from ELANCO and the Lancaster County Library System, without having to leave campus. While most visitors to the library often come to find a good book and read it, many will come on a regular basis to the tables in the library to play cards and games. Wednesdays seem to be the popular evening that people gather around to play and laugh. “They’re quite noisy, but they enjoy themselves and that’s what matters,” Nancy says. “It’s just a nice place for people to gather and relax.” See page 7 for details for the Library Open House on Wednesday, April 17.

GOOD WORKS INC.

TUESDAY, APRIL 9 3pm, Garden Towers

Homes should be safe, warm, and dry; but that isn’t true for everyone. Recently interest has been expressed at Garden Spot Village to assemble a crew to perform house repairs in our general area that would improve living conditions for low-income families. To this end, Bob Beggs, the president of Good Works Inc., has been invited to meet with those interested in order to discuss this opportunity and to see if we might partner with them. Good Works is a Christian nonprofit organization which has existed since 1988 to transform lives by repairing homes for low-income families and share the hope found in Jesus Christ. Repairs by Good Works are provided at no cost to the homeowners and volunteers do most of the work. If you have interest in this project, have skills, or just a willing heart and want to hear what Good Works is currently doing and what we at GSV can do, then please join us. More information from Don Aldrich (610-299-0713) or Cliff Anderson (484-557-8131).

In 1991 a campaign was launched to replace the Easter bunny with the Easter bilby, or rabbit-eared bandicoot. Why the bunny hate? In Australia, rabbits are widely considered pests for destroying crops and land. Companies now make chocolate bilbies for Easter, with proceeds benefiting the endangered animals.

DEATH VALLEY: A LOVE STORY A film about Love, Loss and the Power of Art

Everyone is invited to this special presentation.

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 3, 10AM-12NOON, THEATER Grief and loss have touched every one of us. The film, Death Valley: A Love Story (2016) explores love, loss and the power of art. This film illustrates the true grief journey of Carol Emerson, a therapist who shares through her art, poetry and journal entries in how she navigated the grief of losing her partner, Dr. David Nutter. There is much focus in American society to view grieving and healing in a linear manner, stage like, with a neat and quick resolution. However, what we find in our stories is that grieving is messy and nonlinear. These landscapes shift as illustrated in Carol’s story and the circle of emotions ebb and flow like the tide, and time becomes our gentle companion. “Each person I know can be lost.” Carol says. Both her conscious and unconscious self are manifested in her poetry, dreams, art and journaling. The soul of our grief is taken into the places of our shared humanity that we know by our name. To all who grieve and to all who love, we are in this together. We’ll explore the landscapes of grief and the healing that can come through our own creativity, which we all hold within. Herb Landis, LCSW, BCD, has been practicing the art of psychotherapy for over 25 years and specializes in grief. He will be providing input prior to the film and will lead a discussion following the film. Herb, along with his colleague, Judith Kennedy, LPC, recently wrote Landscapes of Grief and Mourning: A Therapeutic Guide that accompanies the film, Death Valley: A Love Story (2016).

Pay your taxes. Carry an umbrella. BUT DON’T GET SCAMMED THIS APRIL! April is known for spring showers and taxes. The following fact about a day in April 2018 is something you may not know. Tax Day 2018 (April 17) saw more negative (or scam/fraudulent/nuisance) robocalls placed than any other day last year, according to a data analysis by Transaction Network Services, Inc., which counted almost 143 million high-risk calls made that day alone. (Pesce) The official IRS website (www.irs.gov) gives the following reminders to help protect us from those attempting to prey on fears during tax season. AN IRS AGENT WILL NEVER: • Call to demand immediate payment using a specific payment method such as a prepaid debit card, gift card or wire transfer. Generally, the IRS will first mail you a bill if you owe any taxes. • Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying. • Demand payment without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe. • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone. VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services

LIVES OF SERVICE: PAT LENHART

Pat Lenhart, who moved into her home at Sycamore Springs June 2017, loves her new community at Garden Spot Village. She says, “In my previous community, I was happy to be at home. I didn’t know my neighbors very well. At Sycamore Springs though, everyone is so friendly, and I have so much in common with everyone. I am much more social than I used to be.” Because Pat feels like a vital part of the community, she’s inspired to volunteer in a variety of roles. She delivers internal community mail to her neighbors’ mailboxes at Mulberry Commons each Friday. She also serves as an on-call volunteer in the Garden Spot Village gift shop. Being on call allows Pat flexibility to serve when it works for her schedule. She says, “As long as I’m free, I’m happy to volunteer.” Some weeks she works up to three shifts and other weeks she only works one shift. Occasional volunteer opportunities provide variety and allow Pat to keep a flexible schedule. She enjoys writing to a 5th grade boy at New Holland Elementary School as part of the GSV Pen Pal program, and she’s always happy to help when Volunteer Services calls and she has time. For example, she helped to fold the Garden Spot Village Christmas cards in November 2017, performed in a skit for the Resident Variety show in April 2018, modeled new fashions in the Refresh Fashion Show in September 2018, and helped to pack shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child in October 2018. One of the reasons Pat moved to Garden Spot Village was her lifelong friendship with Jeanne Lang and Marsha Dawson. She found herself driving to Garden Spot Village several times a week to visit so, when the new homes became available at Sycamore Springs, she chose a home that fit her needs. Her circle of friends has expanded significantly in the last two years. Participating in the Wellness Adventures like snow tubing and ziplining, introduced her to people she may not have met otherwise. Volunteering also connects her to new people. “It’s fun to volunteer,” Pat says. “I’ve gotten to know more people and everyone is so friendly. Garden Spot Village is a wonderful place to be.”

WELLNESS

APRIL IS FINANICAL WELLNESS MONTH IN THE WELLNESS DEPARTMENT

There are Eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, FamilyFriends, Feelings and Focus. What is financial wellness? Financial wellness is the healthy balance between living for today while preparing financially for tomorrow. It’s not necessarily about being wealthy; it’s about achieving a state of mental well-being to feel in control over finances, it’s being prepared for the unexpected and being confident in financial decisions and the future. 3 STEPS TO ACHIEVE FINANCIAL WELLNESS: Steps and healthy habits to chip away at debt and build savings. 1. Control debt: Know what you owe and make a plan to control debt. • Pay off credit cards with high interest rates first — then get rid of them.

• Pay as much as you can on your smallest debts and pay at least the minimum on large ones — even modest accomplishments can be great motivation. 2. Spend smart: Live within your means. • Write down every expense for a month to see where your money is going. You may be able to identify extra money to apply to savings.

WellSpan HealthTalks Your goal is better health. We’ll help you get there.

• Make a realistic budget. • If you have two incomes, try to cover all your expenses with one and use the other for savings. • Before buying something, ask yourself if you really, really need it. Maybe wait a few weeks to decide. 3. Increase savings: Saving for emergencies or other expenses can give you peace of mind: • Give savings the same importance as paying bills, and save something from your income. • Many experts suggest putting at least 10% of your income into savings — and some recommend as much as 25%. Sound too hard? Start with one percent of your income and increase as your income grows. • Save enough in an emergency fund to cover at least six months’ worth of expenses — nine to twelve is even better. If you ever use it, rebuild it fast. Need a few more pointers?
