METAL SHOP
written by Amanda Weaver, GSC Marketing Intern “The Metal Shop is a dream I never thought would happen, and if I knew, I wouldn’t have sold all of my own equipment,” says Bob Collins, who started the Metal Shop in August 2017. “People told me Garden Spot Village would never allow a Metal Shop on campus, but here we are.” In May 2017, Bob was working on welding a minimotorcycle in the garage of his cottage. With the door to the garage open, airborne sparks from welding started to reach the mulch. Bob quickly realized that his garage was not the best place for a Metal Shop. Within two months, Bob had assembled a small group, which included five others who were interested in the idea of a Metal Shop on campus, and began the process of having Garden Spot Village approve it. In June, the first official Metal Shop meeting was held, and by August, the final draft of rules and regulations for the Metal Shop was proposed and passed. The pole barn behind the aeroponic greenhouse became the home of the Metal Shop, after installing a firewall. The first winter in the shop was harsh because the building lacked insulation, but Garden Spot Village improved the situation, and also provided counter tops for work space. Currently, the Metal Shop has 15 members, experienced and inexperienced. There are currently so many pieces of machinery for metalworking that the club has already outgrown the pole barn and is looking for the possibility of more space. The Metal Shop has partnered with Elanco District Elementary Schools in order to teach students metal-working and welding. Bob says, “We would like kids to know that it’s okay if college is not for you; there are other options.” They are hoping to expand their program of working with more kids in the future. Have an interest in joining the Metal Shop? New members, with experience or not, male or female, are welcome. The training process doesn’t take long to complete. The club conducts a meeting every month, and the yearly fee is only $50pp, which covers the expense of materials. Contact Bob Collins (6441) for more infomation.

EMERGENCY SHEET UPDATES – TIME FOR A REVIEW
Please take a moment to remove and carefully review one of the Emergency Information Sheets from the plastic pouch on the inside of your medicine cabinet, located in your master bathroom. This important piece of paper has critical information about you! Diagnoses, medications you are taking, contact information for family members and/or friends, your Primary Care Provider (PCP) and other specialists, insurance information, your new Medicare number, etc should all be on there. These sheets are designed to give staff and/or EMTs immediate access to crucial information needed to help you during a time of need. If you find information that is inaccurate, draw a line through the outdated information. Write the correct information on the bottom or back of the sheet and mail or deliver the sheet with corrections to the Social Service Services office. We will make the change(s) in the computer system, print, and mail 3 updated Emergency Sheets to you. When received, if everything is accurate, remove the old sheets and shred them, replacing them with the 3 new ones. Extra sheets are provided so you can forward one sheet to Social Services ANY TIME there are changes to be made, and in the event that a sheet gets sent with you to the hospital, one still remains in your home.
REAL ID – QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Questioning if you need to update your driver’s license to REAL ID compatible? If you do not plan to board an airplane, visit a military base, or enter a federal building that requires ID at the door, it is not necessary to upgrade your driver’s license to REAL ID certified. Feel free to pick up a brochure outside the social service office with more details. Important Date – October 1, 2020. After this date, you will need a REAL ID symbol on your driver’s license if you wish to board any commercial aircraft for a domestic flight and do not have a valid passport. The DMV office at East Towne Mall is the only location where you can get your REAL ID immediately. Other DMV locations can verify your documents but will mail the card to you. Additional helpful information from Senator Ryan Aument’s office – 717.627.0036 In a recent conversation with Tina from Senator Aument’s office, she shared the following issues they are hearing from constituents. Their office is willing to help resolve difficult situations. 1. NAME CHANGES – must have actual Marriage license from the county where you were married, not the document signed by the minister who performed the ceremony Help – A request for a certified marriage certificate is $10 and needs to be accompanied by a completed Certified Marriage Record Request from the county where you got married (can be printed online). 2. BIRTH CERTIFICATE – must have both parents names, must have a raised seal Help – If born in PA, visit Senator Aument’s office or call and ask them to send you an application. They will help you complete/submit an application for a birth certificate. You will need a $20 check made out to Vital Records. 3. NAME DIFFERENCES – names must appear the same on ALL documents Example: Christina on some documents, shortened to Tina on other documents will cause problems. 4. SOCIAL SECURITY CARD – is laminated OK? According to Tina, some DMV places will accept laminated Social Security cards, many will not. Help – replacement Social Security cards can be ordered online, or you can visit your local Social Security office.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Deborah Fast, Director of Volunteer Services
LIVES OF SERVICE: VERN MITTELSTADT INVESTS IN PEOPLE
“I’m convinced we have a scriptural mandate to care for our neighbors. Living at Garden Spot Village, I am very motivated to serve. I’m thankful for the heavy emphasis on volunteering here at Garden Spot.” Vern says. Shortly after moving to Garden Spot Village in January 2005, Vern established the Men’s Christian Fellowship with Charlie Dill. The two began regular meetings for men with Bible studies and other activities in order to build a spiritual community. He and his wife, Sally, help with Look & Learn lunches regularly and open their home for tours. He appreciates the interaction with people considering a move to Garden Spot Village. He says, “When people start asking, ‘what don’t you like?’ I start to brag. We like everything about Garden Spot.” Vern also serves as a Connector through Caring Connections, a group that connects people to members of the Garden Spot community who request supportive relationships. Over the past ten years he’s connected with a number of men in skilled nursing, memory support and independent living. He also helped with a supportive men’s group at Maple Farm. Vern and Sally travel extensively, and have sometimes have shared their experiences with PowerPoint presentations to the broader Garden Spot Village community as a part of the Life Enrichment Series. The Mittelstadts moved to Garden Spot Village after visiting friends Richard and Ginny Johnson. They appreciated the beauty and friendliness of the community. Within months of their first visit they moved into a carriage house.
CARING CONNECTIONS ORIENTATION THURSDAY, JULY 18, 2019 9am – 2:30pm, Concord Room
Caring Connections, a volunteer visitation program at Garden Spot Village, is once again offering an orientation session. Participants will learn about the program, and find out how building a caring relationship with a fellow resident who might be struggling, can enrich your own life, as well. Staff will lead sessions on skilled nursing, personal care and memory support – plus spiritual aspects of reaching out to others in our community. Our own GSV Connectors will also share the blessings and insights of their experience. Lunch is provided during the training. Please contact Deborah Fast (6204), Ruthann Ware (6851) or Marsha Dawson (6667) if you are interested, or if you have any questions.

WELLNESS JULY IS FEELINGS / EMOTIONAL WELLNESS MONTH
There are Eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family & Friends, Feelings and Focus. Pick up your copy of the Feelings Calendar at the Wellness Lobby or the Apartment Suites Welcome Center. TEN GOLDEN TIPS FOR EMOTIONAL WELLNESS Emotional Wellness is a priceless commodity. The good news is this: we can greatly influence our own mental and emotional health by learning to adopt habits and attitudes that foster wellness. 1. Keep expectations of yourself and others realistic; Unrealistic expectations lead to disappointment and feelings of failure. 2. Develop realistic goals and strive to achieve them, one day at a time; Good self-esteem doesn’t come from others telling you how wonderful you are. It comes from trusting yourself and your ability to accomplish what you set out to do. It comes from doing the right thing that will lead you to where you want to be. Feeling good about yourself requires action on your part. 3. Learn to accept the changes in your life; Change is inevitable and provides invaluable opportunities for growth. Resisting change takes a lot of energy and can leave you feeling frustrated and sad. 4. Release anger and resentment; This doesn’t mean you are saying that it is okay that people have hurt you; it simply means you are willing to acknowledge that you are not in charge of others’ behaviors nor their punishment, that you are willing to love yourself enough to let go of the toxic waste of anger and resentment that is poisoning your mind, spirit, and probably your body, as well. Remember the things for which you have been forgiven and how precious that gift is. 5. Surround yourself with positive thoughts and positive people; Gravitate toward people who are uplifting and supportive and away from those who operate in negativity. Resist seeing people and situations in the worst possible light. Sort out what is reality and what is negativity.

6. Take responsibility for yourself; People and things can be enjoyable, but resist relinquishing responsibility for your happiness to them. Likewise, resist blaming others for your unhappiness. Background and circumstances may influence who you are, but you are responsible for who you become. 7. Choose to be a good friend to yourself; It is self-defeating to dwell on your mistakes and imperfections. Be as kind, comforting, understanding, and forgiving with yourself as you would be with the people you love the very most. 8. Learn to laugh, especially at yourself; Research shows that laughter can boost your immune system, ease pain, relax your body, and reduce stress. It is said that angels can fly because they take themselves lightly. 9. Take good care of your body; We cannot separate the health of the mind from the health of the body. Just as emotional difficulty can contribute to physical illness, many physical problems contribute to emotional distress and can be avoided by a healthy diet, exercise and good sleeping habits. 10. If you are experiencing emotional difficulty, talk to someone; Feeling depressed or anxious is not shameful, but it is a shame to refuse to get help. Treatment is effective. People can recover from mental disorders and lead full, productive lives.
