EARLY VOICES: Janet Newswanger

Through 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who remember the beginnings of Garden Spot Village. We start with Janet Newswanger, daughter of Victor Weaver. Victor, pictured at left, was a New Holland businessman who had the vision for Garden Spot Village in the mid1980s.

“My dad showed us how to serve our community by example. If he was asked to do something, he did it. NO was not an answer,” Janet Newswanger says, as she reflects on the impact of her father, Victor Weaver.

She also remembers him as being a dreamer, who made things happen. “He didn’t make things happen by himself, though,” she adds quickly. “He always had people who were helping him.

Victor had the vision for a retirement community in New Holland in the mid-1980s. On May 23, 1986, he wrote nine questions on the back of a restaurant napkin. His son Dale kept the napkin and the questions—which included things like “How and when do we get a board of directors?” and “When do we incorporate for non-tax gifts?”—as inspiration to keep Victor’s vision alive, even after his passing.

Victor’s initial vision, Janet says, was to create affordable retirement living. His early intention was to create a place for Victor F. Weaver, Inc., employees to live when they retired. She says, “He wanted to create a place where you could retire, even if you weren’t really wealthy.”

Victor passed away in 1989 and his son, Dale, picked up the responsibility for carrying on the vision for a retirement community in eastern Lancaster County. Garden Spot Village incorporated in 1990.

Finding a location for a retirement community proved to be challenging. After a few false starts, Dale and the nonprofit board supporting the venture, purchased the Weber Farm and the adjoining property in 1994. In November of that year, groundbreaking for the first set of cottages and the Gardens North wing was held.

Victor’s vision for a retirement community came to fruition 15 months later, when Esther Sideman, the first resident, moved into her cottage at 6 Lilac Court, February 23, 1996.

FIRST EMPLOYEE SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED For many years, Bryan Groff, director of Human Resources, had hoped that someday Garden Spot Village would have a scholarship fund for employees. Having this opportunity available for employees would help to retain and recruit staff members in a tight job market. It would also help with professional growth.

Paul Kelley and his daughter Laura have blessed Garden Spot Village with generous gifts in memory of Pat Kelley, a beloved wife and mother. Pat received wonderful care from nursing staff during her final years at Garden Spot Village. To honor her, gifts were given in order to fund scholarships for employees seeking an education in the nursing field. Since the initial gift was made, others have also given to the scholarship fund in memory of loved ones. Although the initial priority was the nursing area, in future years the scholarship committee will determine areas where the greatest need exists.

We are pleased to share that Daphne Heiser and Aubrey Merkey were selected to be the first scholarship recipients for the past fall semester. Application packets had to be submitted that included information such as a statement of career goals and personal or professional recommendations.

Currently Aubrey is working on her RN at Harrisburg Area Community College. Daphne attended Penn State Berks and completed her LPN course work in December.

In 2006 we were down to the last brand new carriage home available for sale out of the 77 that were built. It’s a little like Sycamore Springs, where we are down to three. Scott Miller was the sales person at the time. Chick and Nancy Wenzel stopped by because they were researching retirement communities and Scott asked, “Could I show you something?” He took them to see the home and to make a long story short, they moved in shortly thereafter. “Every so often when I’m talking to Chick,” says Scott, “he’ll comment, I’m so glad you took us to see our carriage home. We got the last one! We are so happy living here.”

We are hosting a COVID-friendly Open House on Thursday, March 18, from 2-4pm. God’s way of living usually contradicts the world’s way of living. Jesus presents the question: Are you ready to live out your faith, to say and do what seems strange to the world, but acceptable to God? Join us for a Bible Study focused on the Beatitudes in order to explore ways our faith is lived out through actions in our own lives today. Campus Chaplain Karyn Nancarvis will lead us in the in-depth study of one of Jesus’ most well-known and loved teachings.

UPRIGHT: Fall Prevention Tip of the Month – Light it Up!

A well-lit home is an important component in preventing falls. Take a “light” inventory of your residence. Do stairways, bathrooms and entryways have adequate lighting? Consider placing lamps in any place with shadows. Plenty of light can prevent stumbling over an object inadvertently left out of place. Add good nightlights in bedrooms and bathrooms for better guidance at night.

PACKAGE DELIVERY VOLUNTEERS: DELIVERING JOY

Package delivery at Garden Spot Village is a well-organized system.

Throughout the day packages arrive from Amazon, USPS, UPS, FedEx Express and FedEx Ground. Facility Services team members organize packages on large pushcarts by address/floor. Every day, 3-4pm, two volunteers stop at Facility Services to pick up their carts.

Stacy Vega, operational support assistant in facility services, who oversees the package delivery says, “Residents say that they like delivering packages because they get to meet new people and see people they already know.”

Chad and Cecilia Bardone moved to Garden Spot Village, July 2019. Since then, the Bardones have become involved in many different volunteer programs and opportunities including the package delivery service, where they volunteer every Wednesday afternoon.

Oftentimes, the Bardones will wait until the door is opened at an apartment when they make a delivery, “We love to see the joy on their faces,” says Chad. “A lot of people get really excited when we make a delivery.”

Not only does package delivery allow them to meet a lot of people, but Chad mentions how it’s a nice opportunity to get exercise by walking around inside all afternoon. The Bardones began assisting package delivery October 2020, when there was a volunteer opening for the couple. “We put our names on waiting lists for many volunteer opportunities and help out whenever we can” says Cecilia.

Since starting, they have delivered hundreds of packages at Garden Spot, sometimes multiple packages to one apartment. Over the holidays, especially because of Covid, the number of packages to deliver increased. Chad mentions how one time they delivered 15 packages to one apartment! Not all packages are your typical square box. The Bardones have delivered everything from pet food to large flat screen TVs. “It’s a fun job, it really is,” he states.

Both Chad and Cecilia have been life-long volunteers, and only continue to find new ways to get involved at Garden Spot Village. “It brings a lot of satisfaction” says Chad, “you typically get more satisfaction by helping others than the work you put in.”

PERSONALIZE YOUR PLATE DURING NATIONAL NUTRITION MONTH® Developing a healthful eating pattern is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. The key is tailoring your favorite foods to meet your individual nutrient needs.

In March, the Academy focuses attention on healthful eating through National Nutrition Month®. This year's theme, Personalize Your Plate, promotes creating nutritious meals to meet individuals' cultural and personal food preferences.

"America is a cultural melting pot, so you can't expect everyone's food choices to look the same," said registered dietitian nutritionist Su-Nui Escobar, a national spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in Miami, Fla. "Eating is meant to be a joyful experience. As supermarkets increasingly diversify their shelves to meet the needs of their customers, it's becoming easier to create nutritious meals that align with a variety of cultural preferences."

During National Nutrition Month®, the Academy encourages people to make informed food choices and develop sound eating and physical activity habits they can follow all year long. The Academy encourages seeking the advice of registered dietitian nutritionists – the food and nutrition experts who can help develop individualized eating and activity plans to meet people's health goals.

"Variety is the spice of life and that's how people should view their meals," Escobar said. Spice up your menus with the foods and flavors you enjoy and add new flavors to spark excitement in your cooking. "Developing healthful eating habits does not require drastic lifestyle changes. A registered dietitian nutritionist can help you incorporate the foods you enjoy into your life."

The www.myplate.gov is a helpful website to create a balanced diet.

And my favorite tool is your own hand. Your hand can be used as a useful guide to control your food portions and staying healthy. As a guide, your palm should equate to the amount of protein you should eat. A clenched fist should correspond to the grains and fruits in your meal. Fats and oils should be roughly the size of your thumb tip, along with one to two handfuls of vegetables.
