EARLY VOICES: Paul Snader

Through 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who remember the beginnings of Garden Spot Village. Paul Snader offers insight on what the property was like in the 1950s, when he served as a hired man for John Ranck. New Holland has been through many changes since its early days. What was once a small town with 2,500 people has more than doubled in size and became the home to Garden Spot Village 25 years ago. Garden Spot sits on what was once one of the dairy farms owned by John Ranck. In 1952, Paul Snader, current resident, began working as a hired man on the farm. Working ten hour days, he remembers cleaning stables, working in the fields and carrying milk cans to the milk house. No matter the season, there was always plenty of work to keep Paul busy. “John Ranck was a good man to work for,” says Paul. The Ranck’s owned what was considered to be a large dairy farm at the time, with a herd of 60 cows. Unlike present day, milk was not shipped off in large milk trucks, but rather it was stored in cans that were later sent away for processing. At the time, New Holland was made up of Main Street, Jackson Street and farm land. On the Ranck farm, the land was used to grow corn, alfalfa, wheat and tobacco which Paul assisted with during the summer months. “I am awful glad I had the chance to work for John Ranck” Paul explains, as he reflects on the fact that working on the farm gave him the skills and experience he needed before he bought his own farm in Parkesburg. As New Holland grows and Garden Spot Village continues to flourish, we celebrate the history and stories that shaped the community into what it is today. —Written by Avery Stauffer, Marketing Intern

DEVELOPMENT

Linda Dodge, Director of Development

MEMORIAL GARDEN RECORDED EDUCATION SESSION Garden Spot Village continues to hold a special place in the hearts of residents. If you have considered making plans to have ashes interred on campus, the Memorial Garden is a wonderful option. The Development Department has had the pleasure of running an educational session in February about the Memorial Garden we have on campus. We’re pleased to offer a recording of that session, which can be accessed through CATIE. During this session, we explain the history of the garden, the impetus behind the development and the application process. To learn more about this wonderful option to arrange interment of ashes, and to make a gift to the Benevolent Fund at the same time, watch the video on your CATIE. Call Linda Dodge, Director of Development (6215) to schedule an appointment.

SWIPE OUT HUNGER COMMUNITY MEAL UPDATE Over the past four years, Garden Spot Village’s Swipe Out Hunger Community Meal program has provided more than 8,300 free meals to people in our community. This program, which occurs on the 4th Monday night of each month at CrossNet Youth Ministries, has grown to include a mobile clothing closet. In 2020, the free meals moved from in-person sit-down meals to a COVID-friendly drive-through program. Hundreds of meals are shared with the New Holland community each month. God has been gracious, and residents and team members have been incredibly generous in funding this monthly ministry through donations at the registers in The Harvest Table, The Coop and Refresh Coffee Bar. We recently learned that CrossNet needs to modify space so they can better receive and store food donations used in their food pantry. Because of your generosity, we were able to donate $3,500 to help CrossNet modify an existing building behind their office so they can use it to temporarily store food that is given to qualified community members who are in need. We invite you to continue to support the Swipe Out Hunger Ministry by donating unused meal dollars at the register at The Harvest Table, The Coop and Refresh Coffee Bar. You may also donate cash to this ministry of GSV. Please contact Fred or Eileen Eck or Don or Lois Aldrich with any questions.

to their one-bedroom with a den Garden Apartment in May 2018. They appreciated the opportunity to move to Garden Spot Village sooner rather than later! They had initially wanted to wait for a cottage, but loved the convenience of living in an apartment. They say the proximity to restaurants, volunteer opportunities and their neighbors make their apartment a perfect solution. Plus, the team members they interact with— at the restaurants, in Volunteer Services and Life Enrichment—all add to the enjoyment of living in the community. Wait lists for cottages and carriage homes continue to grow, but because of some recent internal moves, one-bedroom and studio apartments offer a shorter wait time, as well as an affordable and convenient opportunity to live at Garden Spot Village. If you have a friend or family member who would like to move sooner rather than later, encourage them to call Kelly at 717.355.6000 to learn more about the opportunities available for Garden Apartments.

LIFE CELEBRATION QUILTS – CELEBRATING THE CREATORS!

Approximately ten years ago, Jane Stahr partnered with Pastoral Services Department to create what is now called Life Celebration Quilts, an end-of-life celebration ritual which includes the placing of a quilt on the bed of a resident who passes away in Skilled Nursing. The Sewing Guild provided the beautiful quilts. Through that initial ritual grew a second ministry – the gift of a small memory quilt to the resident's family. Staff write messages of love and support to the family on the back of the quilt. Because staff and residents in Skilled Nursing households often function as family, this ritual of sharing memories, support, and encouragement is incredibly meaningful. Joyce Beyer assisted Jane and also provided leadership for this program for a time. For the past six years Sally Rapp has been giving leadership to this ministry. Over the past 10 years, many, many families have been blessed by this ministry. This month, we say a special Thank You to all who have and continue to contribute to this extension of God’s love and care during the passage of life.

ALPHA COURSE: STARTING WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 5-7PM, CONCORD ROOM

Is there more to life than this? Why is there suffering? Who is Jesus? Everyone should have the opportunity to ask life’s big questions, explore their faith and share their story. Join us on a journey through the Alpha Course. Sign up at Resident Services or watch on GSV-TV.

SCAMMING: DILIGENCE NEEDED

You are not imagining it. Scamming and fraud attempts have exploded in both quantity and difficulty to detect. According to COVID Confusion Breeds Scams (Axios): In 2020, the FTC received 4.7 million consumer scam reports, up from 3.2 million in 2019. The pandemic has created a prime opportunity for scammers to target people who are already confused about the chaotic rollouts of stimulus payments, loans, contact tracing and vaccines. Online shopping sites sell counterfeit N95 masks and other items falsely advertised as having the ability to lower risk of COVD infection. While most scams continue to come via phone and emails, the FTC reports a sharp increase in text message scams. According to Robert Olson (LNP. 2/21/21. Senior Life column) • Don’t answer the phone or the door or engage with anyone for business unless you know them personally and have initiated the contact. • Never reveal personal information to a stranger. • TELL someone immediately if you think you were scammed.

UPRIGHT: Fall Prevention Tip of the Month – Sing in the Rain! But Wear Nonskid Shoes

April showers are awesome! They help the flowers but may also create slippery sidewalks and driveways. Sturdy, nonskid shoes or rain boats are a great help in navigating wet surfaces in a safe manner. Singing in the rain, or in the shower, is a fabulous idea if combined with the equipment you need to have fun without creating a fall potential. Hand bars and shower chairs provide an extra measure of safety when in contact with wet bathroom surfaces. At Home caregivers can also assist with showers for those recovering from a surgery or illness. For all events, masks and social distancing required. Schedule subject to change. Watch CATIE for updates.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services

VOLUNTEER SERVICES - LINDEN: A GREAT SOURCE FOR EVERYDAY ESSENTIALS Written by Avery Stauffer, Marketing Intern

Linden offers a little bit of everything. From groceries to gifts to fashion, Linden is the perfect place to find everything you need right here at Garden Spot Village. The store offers a variety of products and services. Shoppers can find groceries, fresh pastries and general retail items like clothing, accessories, gifts and cards. The grocery section features a selection of health and beauty items, as well as light bulbs, soap, candy, bananas and bulk items from Yoder’s. Ed and Darlene Smith, Garden Spot Village residents since August 2014, regularly shop at Yoder’s to restock Linden’s inventory. They work hard to make sure the bananas are as fresh as possible. Ed says, “Darlene and I have direct contact with the produce staff and they allow us to go to the back room where the bananas are stored to choose the bananas of our choice.” Linden recently partnered with Best of Lancaster County, a local wholesale company that provides items from Kreider Dairy, Fisher’s Homestyle Salads, September Farm and more. In addition, on Fridays Shady Maple delivers fresh pastries. New since April 2020, Linden offers delivery service on Friday mornings. A group of volunteers pick the orders and another group delivers the orders, placed by phone on Friday mornings. Tom Peck, Garden Spot Village resident since December 2015 and Bob Weiss, Garden Spot Village resident since March 2017, stepped up to deliver the orders to cottages, carriage homes and Sycamore Springs. Judy Dinning, Garden Spot Village resident since November 2018, and Edna Jean Homsher, Garden Spot Village resident since June 2019, deliver orders to apartments. Tom says, “We usually have about 8-10 deliveries on any given Friday morning. Delivering the orders gives both of us a chance to assist our neighbors who, for whatever reason, choose to have their orders delivered instead of picking them up. It’s just another opportunity to volunteer for this awesome community we call home!” Aside from food, Linden offers a wide selection of general retail items. Stop by to purchase gifts, women’s and men’s fashion, jewelry, greeting cards and more. Merchandise options change seasonally, so stop by frequently to see what is new. Marsha Dawson, Garden Spot Village resident since August 2016, works in Linden regularly, running the cash register, pricing merchandise, re-stocking the shelves, and putting the milk order and single serve items in the coolers. Marsha says, “I love people, so it's a fun way to meet residents and staff.” She continues, “Also, it helps my mental health; I hate to be alone for too long and volunteering is an answered prayer for me.” Ed and Darlene, Tom, Bob, Judy, Edna Jean and Marsha are just a few of the volunteers who keep Linden running. “Linden could not function to the extent or in the way it does without the quality and number of volunteers,” says Daryl Groff, director of Volunteer Services. “Without them, we would have to rethink Linden as a whole.” Check CATIE and the Weekly Announcements for updates regarding sales and other events at Linden.

WELLNESS

Lauren Graber, Director of Wellness

APRIL WATER CHALLENGE The Wellness Department is hosting a Water Challenge during the month of April. Register by phone 717.355.6228, email lgraber@gardenspotvillage.org or stop by. We want to log your water intake for the month of April, with a goal of 4-5 glasses of water a day. You will receive a Wellness water bottle when you register.

BENEFITS OF DRINKING WATER Keeping hydrated is crucial for health and well-being, but many people do not consume enough fluids each day. Approximately 60% of the body is made up of water, and 71% of the planet's surface is covered by water. Perhaps it is the ubiquitous nature of water that means drinking enough each day is not at the top of many people's list of priorities.

FAST FACTS ABOUT DRINKING WATER • Adult humans are 60% water, and our blood is 90% water. • There is no universally agreed quantity of water that must be consumed daily. • Water is essential for kidneys and other bodily functions. • When dehydrated, the skin can become more vulnerable to skin disorders and wrinkling. • Drinking water instead of soda can help with weight loss.

TO FUNCTION PROPERLY, ALL THE CELLS AND ORGANS OF THE BODY NEED WATER. HERE ARE SOME REASONS OUR BODY NEEDS WATER: • It lubricates the joints • It forms saliva and mucus • It delivers oxygen throughout the body • It boosts skin health and beauty • It cushions the brain, spinal cord, and other sensitive tissues • It regulates body temperature • It flushes body waste • It helps maintain blood pressure • It makes minerals and nutrients accessible • It prevents kidney damage • It boosts performance during exercise • It aids with Weight loss • The digestive system depends on it • The airways need it
