EARLY VOICES: TEAM MEMBERS

Through 2021, as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Garden Spot Village, we will include the insight and memories of some of the Early Voices who remember the beginnings of Garden Spot Village.

BRYAN GROFF

“When I started in August 1996, Garden Spot Village was one apartment tower surrounded by a lot of empty fields and dreams,” says Bryan Groff, Human Resources Director. “I was drawn to the job at Garden Spot because I knew we were building something out of the ground. There were just over ten of us who were working here at that time, so I was able to be involved in everything, which was fun,” Bryan continues. Bryan’s first assignments were “a little bit of everything,” he says with a smile. His previous job was with a local computer store, so he helped with basic IT. Timekeeping happened with punch cards and Menno Haven, located in Chambersburg, Pa., handled payroll. Bryan remembers faxing punch cards to Menno Haven on Monday mornings. In turn, Menno Haven’s CEO would drive the pay checks to New Holland on payday. Menno Haven also managed accounts payable until spring 1997, so Bryan spent a lot of time faxing invoices and receipts to their team. Bryan also processed resident receipts from Yoder’s. Because the community hadn’t yet built a dining room and residents were promised one meal a day, Garden Spot offered vouchers for Yoder’s Restaurant. The small, fledging community was like family. When Bryan battled colon cancer in 1997, the residents supported him, just like family. They also enjoyed interacting with his young family when they visited.

HOLLY GEERDES

“Working at Garden Spot Village has never been a job,” Holly Geerdes, Facility Services Administrative Assistant says. “It’s been a ministry.” When Holly interviewed to work at Garden Spot Village in the summer of 1997 she told Bryan Groff, “I don’t think I’m the right person for this job. I’m not very good at accounting.” Bryan revamped the job, which made it just right for Holly and she became the first fulltime office worker. When CEO Nevin Kraybill asked, “What is your five-year plan?” Holly responded, “It’s to be doing what the Lord wants me to do with the talents He’s given me.” Twenty-four years later, Holly is still serving the Lord at Garden Spot Village. When Holly started working at Garden Spot Village in July 1997, Gardens North and the Main Street Hallway was complete to what is now TDR. The community had 39 cottages and 16 townhouses and Gardens West was under construction. In 1999 she transferred to Facility Services. One of the lessons she learned from Robert Hochstaetter was about preparing for catastrophes. “Robert always said, ‘Not IF it happens, WHEN it happens,’” Holly says with a smile. For example, Holly remembers the open house for Village Square. It was a new building—what could go wrong? Well, the elevator broke, with guests inside. The facility services team managed the crisis and got everyone out safely. Holly says, “My job has been challenging and never boring. There is always something new to learn and do every day. I thank the Lord for giving me the privilege of working here.”

FRED NEWSWANGER

July 1999, Fred Newswanger started as 2nd shift security/maintenance in Facility Services. It was the first job he had ever interviewed for, since he worked for his dad and was hired by JK Mechanical based on his brother’s recommendation. While he enjoyed his work at JK Mechanical, the summer of 1999, he was looking for a challenge— something different. He attends Weaverland Mennonite Church and because he grew up in New Holland, working at Garden Spot felt like a natural transition for him. Fred’s heart for service shines through in his work as systems and projects technician. “Working at Garden Spot Village appealed to me because it allowed me to assist people who were unable to take care of maintenance issues themselves.” Participating in Garden Spot Village sponsored Travel with Purpose Trips has also been a highlight for Fred. He’s traveled to Kenya twice in order to serve with CURE and traveled once to Honduras. He also participated in the Mennonite Disaster Service oncampus building project. “I really like the partnership between CrossNet and Garden Spot,” Fred adds. “I’ve volunteered with CrossNet at the Youth Center for many, many years. It’s important to me that Garden Spot Village cares for the community and not just the people who live at Garden Spot.” Fred also experienced the joy of community when he married Glenda in November 2020 and had residents share their congratulations with him.

DEVELOPMENT

Linda Dodge, Director of Development

THANK YOU TO THE 2021 RACE SPONSORS SODEXO SHADY MAPLE UPWARD BROADBAND If you know employees of any of the sponsors, please say thank you to them for the race sponsorship which benefits the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund.

WIN REBER'S Heart for the Benevolent Fund

Win Reber is well-known for his watercolor painting and for his many years of leadership with the Art Guild at Garden Spot Village. Through the month of March Win displayed his art in the Main Street Art Gallery. Typically, when art is sold in the Main Street Art Gallery, the artist receives 80% of the sale and the Benevolent Fund receives 20% of the sale. Win and his wife Carol decided to donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of his paintings for this show. Win says, “I think the Benevolent Fund is an important part of Garden Spot Village; it protects residents who, for reasons outside their control, have exhausted their resources. Also, while I no longer sell my work at art shows, I’m still painting, so I have a lot of inventory to sell.” He adds, “I look at other groups here at Garden Spot Village that create things to donate to the Benevolent Fund. This is my way, as an artist, to make a contribution.” In March, Win sold 19 paintings and donated $2000 to the Benevolent Fund.

You're Invited! MOHI Mission Trip February 2022

Prayerfully consider joining Garden Spot Village's small team of residents and team members for a 2-week mission trip working alongside of Missions of Hope International (MOHI). This trip will be focused on service and engagement with students, staff and missional leadership of a Christian ministry serving in a network of urban slums in the capital city of Nairobi, Kenya.

To learn more about this incredible cross-cultural opportunity, pick up the trip FAQs and Application at Resident Services, online at gsc.gl/js5x4d or reach out to Brandon Adams (6258) or Chaplain Karyn Nancarvis (6235) after Tuesday, May 11. Completed applications should be turned in by Tuesday, June 15 to Brandon or Chaplain Karyn.

During the month of March we invited residents to tell us why they love to live at Garden Spot Village. Millie Feliz, who moved to a Garden Apartment at Garden Spot Village in late 2020, writes, “Coming to Garden Spot Village has been one of the top best decisions that I made in my life. When the area received significant snowfalls, I thanked God frequently that I didn’t need to shovel snow from our large driveway and sidewalks, but could look out and enjoy the beautiful landscape. Another benefit I receive is not having to concern myself with the upkeep of a property since there are capable maintenance personnel here.” Choosing a Garden Apartment allowed Millie to move to Garden Spot Village faster than waiting for her first choice, a cottage. If you have friends or family members who would like to move to Garden Spot sooner rather than later, encourage them to consider a one-bedroom or studio Garden Apartment, which will allow them to move more quickly.

PASTORAL SERVICES

Pastor Chet Yoder, Director of Pastoral Services

KNITTED WITH LOVE!

This month, we highlight and express our gratitude to the Prayer Shawl Knitting Group. These ladies, 9-10 in number, faithfully supply Pastoral Services with knitted prayer shawls which are given by the chaplains when residents are experiencing challenges such as health, transitions, or grief. GSV resident Hannah Hauenstein has been a member of the prayer shawl knitters for a number of years. While the number of shawls completed varies according to the time available, Hannah typically completes four shawls per month. The knitters place their name on a card attached to each shawl so that the recipient is aware of who has made their shawl. Often times, the gifting of a shawl results in a follow-up call of thanks and at times, an ongoing relationship. For this faithful, creative ministry we in Pastoral Services say a huge “Thank You” and “God bless you!”

“JUST” THINKING . . .

Most of us are a product of our environment. We are what we have been taught by our parents, our teachers, our churches, the media. For those of us for whom engagement with minority groups has not been part of our environment, there is much about racial justice, through no fault of our own, that we simply do not know. In light of this and as a supplement to the previous book discussion groups and films, we will be offering a few lines about racial reconciliation in this space each month. We welcome comments. Pastor Chet (6203), Chaplain Karyn (6235).

We have probably all experienced tripping over an out-of-place item abandoned on the stairs, floor or in a pathway. A simple visual assessment of your home can reveal if all pathways are wide open and free of clutter. If ambulation devices are being used, make sure there is plenty of room to maneuver without the equipment catching onto a rug or piece of furniture.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES

Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services

JOLLY TROLLEY CONNECTS RESIDENTS Written by Avery Stauffer, Marketing Intern

The Jolly Trolley has been around almost as long as anyone can remember. Its’ bright yellow color and charming volunteer drivers make it a favorite among residents. Occasionally, passengers will be ready and waiting even before the morning volunteer driver arrives!

NOTE: Volunteer's mask was removed temporarily for the photo.

“People look forward to it; they know we’re coming,” says Don Ware, one of the head conductors. Don has lived at Garden Spot for the past 12 years, and has volunteered as a Jolly Trolley driver for a little over a year. The Trolley currently runs Monday - Friday, 10am - 2pm, with hopes of adding extended hours in the near future. The fully electric vehicle was designed to give rides between the Apartment Suites lobby and the Chapel. Designed with safety in mind, features like a blue light and clicking sound were added. The light is an extra safety precaution projected about ten feet in front of the vehicle so people can see it coming. The clicking sound can be heard from behind and around turns. The Trolley also includes hooks and straps for items like walkers that passengers may need to bring along. The neat thing about the Jolly Trolley and its volunteers is that no one seems to take the service for granted. Don mentions that passengers almost always express their gratitude and the volunteer drivers are excellent at taking care of them. “I always try to greet people. At least I can give them a smile and say hello.” Driving the trolley is a great opportunity for social interaction, whether you’re getting to know those who regularly ride the Trolley or greeting those who pass by. Volunteer driver Diane Clarke says “It’s a great way to meet new residents, and they’re so appreciative that it’s rewarding in the end.” There is an atmosphere of caring and treating others well, that carries over into the many volunteer opportunities like the Jolly Trolley. “That’s the beautiful thing about Garden Spot,” says Don.
