Residents Meet Cooperative Living House Challenge

Congratulations and thank you! Residents have met the $10,000 challenge for the Cooperative Living House. Gifts are still coming in so we’ll share a final total for this challenge in the future. We were very blessed to have a resident step forward with a $10,000 challenge gift for this exciting project. If you are interested in learning more about making a challenge gift for a future project or for the Benevolent Fund, please contact Linda Dodge at (6215).

Fall Festival Recap

The 21st annual Fall Festival, Saturday, October 14, was a wonderful success. Many thanks to all residents who participated by donating, shopping, crafting and volunteering. Thank you for sharing your time and talents in support of the Benevolent Fund. This year, a record number of 23 hosts/hostesses agreed to host meals for the Share-A-Meal component, which sold 153 tickets. Also exciting news, the apple pie contest had the most entries. Congratulations to Hilda Bradney for her first prize apple pie, to Barbara Murphy for the second place pie, and to Pat Frankel for the third place pie. The top three prize-winning pies were auctioned in support of the Benevolent Fund. This year, the silent auction included 51 gift baskets, 53 handcrafted items, and 57 gift certificates, all of which were donated to support the Fall Festival. A financial update on the outcome of the Fall Festival will be available in the future as we gather all the information needed for an accurate account. The Fall Festival committee is very grateful for the assistance of the staff and residents in making this event successful.

Charitable Gift Annuity Educational Session Planned

Charitable Gift Annuities are becoming more popular with residents. A charitable gift annuity is a great way to help Garden Spot Village in the future, and at the same time, a charitable gift annuity guarantees a resident a fixed rate of income for the charitable gift annuity at rates of 4% to 9%, based on age. There are also some nice tax benefits. You are invited to a Charitable Gift Annuity educational session on Thursday, November 16, 9:30am in the Concord Room. Space is limited so please register at the Resident Services Desk by Monday, November 13. Speakers: Nikki Shingle, director of charitable relations for Everence, will give an overview of Charitable Gift Annuities. Ron Harris, resident, will talk about the benefits of funding a Charitable Gift Annuity with appreciated stock. Bill Hunter, resident, got his first Charitable Gift Annuity as a future resident. He’ll talk about what he sees as the benefits of having Charitable Gift Annuities.

MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

The holiday season starts in November with Thanksgiving and then it’s full speed ahead until the New Year. There are parties, get-togethers and gatherings. It’s a time of year when community emerges front and center, family and friends get together, old friendships are often rekindled and new relationships are established as good cheer flourishes. As we’re all aware, welcoming people with open arms is a hallmark of Garden Spot and everyone is encouraged to invite and welcome others to visit. Each year the Village Square is transformed into a winter wonderland extravaganza, the train room hosts a series of weekend open houses and this year Garden Spot Village is one of the stops on the Lancaster County Twelve Shops of Christmas Tour. Get ready to jump in and enjoy the holidays because as November gets going, the holidays are upon us!

SOCIAL SERVICES CONTINUED MEET OUR NEW TEAM MEMBERS: MARY BETH & CHRISTINA MARY BETH VILLAFANE - Social Worker for Apartment Residents Hello! My name is Mary Beth Villafane and I’m the new Independent Living Social Worker at Garden Spot Village working with apartment residents. Some of you may remember me. I was an intern under Sherilyn Lapp, assisting residents in the cottages and carriage homes last school year. This has been what I like to call a year of transitions. First, I got engaged, then I graduated from Lancaster Bible College, and now I’m working full-time in a field and position that I love! October 7th was another life transition when I got married. So, even though my name has changed from Dodson to Villafane, my love for working here with residents will stay the same. I’m honored to be a part of the Garden Spot Village team and am so excited to be back – I’ve missed it! CHRISTINA WHEELER – Social Work Intern My name is Christina Wheeler. I am a student intern from Lancaster Bible College who will be working with the Social Services Team at Garden Spot Village for the academic school year. I will be working alongside Joanne Morton in Personal Care until December, 2017, and then Jenny Snyder in Independent Living from January until May, 2018. I grew up in a small town in Florida as the second oldest of five children. I am currently in my senior year at Lancaster Bible College, majoring in Social Work. I was drawn to this field because I have always had a desire to help people. I chose to begin working with older individuals as I believe there is so much to learn from older adults. It is also my desire to be helpful, as I work within the community of Garden Spot Village. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone. Please stop by and say hello!

Garden Spot Village Holiday Train Room Open Houses Train enthusiasts of all ages will enjoy enchanting detailed scenery in the HO and O-guage train layouts.

WELLNESS NOVEMBER IS FLEXIBILITY MONTH

Flex.i.bil.i.ty/noun: the quality of bending easily without breaking • the ability to be easily modified • willingness to change or compromise. There are two way to look at Flexibility… physical flexibility, and mental flexibility. Physical flexibility is the range of motion in a joint or group of joints, which is also related to strength in the muscles. This flexibility can be improved with stretching exercises, along with moving your joints. Being physically flexible is an important part of reducing injury and soreness in the joints. You don’t even need to stretch every day. Stretching 5-10 minutes 4 times a week will be enough to improve your flexibility. Tips to keep your body flexible: • • • •

Hold stretches for 30 seconds Warm-up before stretching (light walking or high knee marching) Don’t bounce while stretching Don’t stretch to the point of pain

Mental flexibility is a flexible mindset moving us away from limiting thought patterns to a place of openness and possibility, allowing us to develop the ability to cope with change. Mental flexibility is not arbitrary or whimsical, it’s grounded by our goals and aspirations and balance between control and spontaneity. A flexible mind will help us live more resilient, creative, happy lives. Tips to keep your mind flexible: • • • •

ry to listen more and plan less in a conversation T Pray or meditate Acknowledge personal biases Keep an open mind with new or different opinions

For more tips pick up a copy of the November Flexibility calendar at the Wellness Lobby or Apartment Suites Lobby. Stop by for a Physical Flexibility Assessment on Fridays, 1:30pm during the month of November. Any questions call Lauren Graber, (6228).
