The 9 Unwritten Rules of Grandparenting Abide by these handy guidelines, and your grandparenting experience will always be a breeze.

RULE #1: YOU’RE RESPONSIBLE FOR STAYING IN TOUCH.

Table of Contents 9 Unwritten Rules... 2 Development 3 Making A Difference 4 Dinning Services 5 Life Enrichment 6 Marketing 8 GSV Band Concert 9 Super Bowl Party 9 Saturday Evening Concert Series 9 FEBRUARY CALENDAR 10 Pastoral Services 12 WellSpan HealthTalks Ad 13 Social Services 14 Culture Class 15 In the Theater 16 GSV TV - Chanel 956 16 Volunteer Services 17 Around Town 17 Wellness 18 Education and Arts... 19 Event Sign-Ups 20

Whether they’re halfway through college or just starting kindergarten, one of the biggest complaints we hear about grandchildren is that they just don’t reach out. It’s a kid thing, not necessarily exclusive to the current generation. Either way, the onus is on you to stay in touch. “The ticket to keeping ties with your grandchild strong is maintaining open lines of communication,” says writer Jodi M. Webb. To do that, you need to reach out to kids in ways they’ll respond to. Learn to text! Communicate on social media! Make the occasional phone call! Ask about their interests, and try to keep things light and loving.

RULE #2: THE FAVORITE GRANDPARENT IS THE ONE WHO IS THE MOST FUN.

They might not admit it to your face, but secretly, grandkids have a favorite grandparent. (Admit it: You did, too.) The favorites are willing to try new things, suggest kid-friendly activities, and go with the flow. They’re the ones who laugh freely and hug closely, who—cliché as it is—have the most cookies on-hand.

RULE #3: OFFENDED? YOU GOTTA MOVE ON.

At some point, when it comes to your grandkids, you’re gonna feel left out, guilty, confused, frustrated, or worse. Your son and DIL might not invite you for Thanksgiving. Your grandson might disrespect you. Your granddaughter might forget your birthday! (Oy. That kid.) In these inevitable instances, you can air your feelings and even expect an apology. But unless it’s something irreversibly hurtful, you can’t harp. Grudges damage relationships. Forgiveness and communication strengthens them. Go high and be the bigger person.

RULE #4: PITCH IN UP FRONT.

Grandbabies are a blessing, not to mention a ton of work, and new parents may need help during those first hectic months. (You did, right?) If your kids are amenable, lend a hand any way you can: cleaning, cooking, babysitting, etc. It’s a great way to get off on the right foot with your family, and—bonus!—you’re sure to get quality time with your new favorite infant.

RULE #5: SHARE THE GRANDKIDS WITH OTHERS.

When a grandchild is born, you want that baby all to yourself, and probably always will. But there are other grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and more to think about. Sharing can be hard. Head off problems by planning ahead and keeping lines of communication open. Try creating ground rules when appropriate (take turns visiting, switch holidays yearly, etc.), and be welcoming, flexible, and understanding. Oh, and wine helps, too.

RULE #6: BITE YOUR TONGUE.

Disagree with your grandson’s sleep schedule? Think your daughter is too strict with sweets? Unless you’re asked directly or believe your grandbaby is in danger, keep your child-rearing opinions to yourself. Too often, a grandparent’s unsolicited advice comes off as veiled criticism, which can breed resentment and drive a wedge between family members. If you need to vent, your partner, friends, and coworkers are ready and waiting.

RULE #7: ACT LIKE YOUR GRANDCHILDREN ARE ALWAYS WATCHING (BECAUSE THEY ARE).

PUBLISHER Garden Spot Village OUR MISSION To enrich the lives of older adults as an expression of Christ’s Love. EDITOR Colleen Musselman DESIGN Brandon Adams PROOF READERS Ruth Buehler ILLUSTRATIONS

“Saying we want good behavior from children can be vague for them, especially when they are young,” says children’s advocate Kathy Motlagh. In other words, if you want well-behaved grandkids with good values, talking isn’t enough; you have to practice what you preach. Model kindness and respect through your everyday actions. Resist impulses driven by anger and fear. Be the good in the world, and those babies will follow your example.

RULE #8: GET THE GEAR.

To paraphrase a famed author, it is a truth universally acknowledged that grandparents in possession of good fortune must spend a little on stuff for visiting grandchildren. When the grandkids are young, a few books, toys, diapers, activities, bottles, and dishes are simple enough to acquire and store, and ensure parents don’t have to haul extra belongings. If overnight stays are in your future, you might consider a highchair, small stroller, or even a crib. Space and income will play a factor in your equipment list, but really, any effort will be appreciated.

RULE #9: THERE ARE NO RULES.

Grandparenting changes from generation to generation; you’re different from your grandparents, and your grandchildren will differ greatly from their own grandchildren. And while experience and history offer some guidance, all we can ultimately do is confront the challenges in front of us at any given time. Heed good advice, do your best, and love and enjoy your grandkids. It’s all anyone can ask for. Read On: The 9 Unwritten Rules of Grandparenting written by Kristen Sturt

spring 9th Annual

Bird House Display & Silent Auction FEBRUARY 1-28, VILLAGE PARK The Village Square Indoor Park is alive with the feel of spring because of the annual Bird House Display and Silent Auction. Now in its ninth year, the event was started in 2009 by woodshop members in order to raise money for the Benevolent Fund. In recent years, quilters and crafters have become involved, as well. The 2017 event will take place February 1-28. The silent auction bidding ends at 5pm on Tuesday, February 28. Dozens of unique bird houses will be on display along with quilted and other handcrafted items with a bird theme. Plan now to visit the Village Park in February. The unique items in the silent auction make nice one-ofa-kind gifts. Thank you to the woodshop members, quilters and other talented residents who have created and donated items to raise money for the Benevolent Fund.

MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

Garden Spot has the greatest residents. During a conversation with a highly respected sales trainer he commented that most retirement communities do not let residents interact with prospective residents. If they do, they are “handpicked” and “trained”. As you know we are thrilled to have you talk to prospective residents. Your enthusiasm and your love for where you live is like a light on a lampstand. We also appreciate the way you invite friends and family to explore Garden Spot as a place to live. Most future resident applications list several people who they know live here. You’ve been inviting people to Look & Learns for years. Now there is another seminar that you can invite people to: Discover Sycamore Springs. It’s similar to a Look & Learn but it focuses on the new community Sycamore Springs. You can invite people to call Megan or Kelly or you can pick up an invitation with dates at Resident Services. The invitation tells people how to sign up online. Thank you for helping spread the word! Keep talking to future residents. They love to hear what you have to say about Garden Spot.

Monday January 17, 2017, was a carpool day because the VW Beetle was incapacitated and in for repair. Approaching Garden Spot Village my wife, Cheryl, asked, “Is it okay if I hang out at Refresh and work for a while before going to the office?” The answer was, “of course.” In fact, it’s not unusual to see people from the broader community sitting in the Refresh Coffee bar with a laptop open or a tablet... Passit ON The Federal Trade Commission’s program “Pass It On” has the goal of preventing fraud from happening. “Chances are good that someone you know has been scammed. They may not talk about it, but the statistics do. The truth is that sharing what you know can help protect someone who you know from a scam.” (FTC, Pass It On) The new education campaign is designed to enlist people over 65 in the effort to recognize and report frauds and scams. The FTC reports fraudsters target all ages. The thieves know older persons are more likely to have bigger nest eggs, which makes them more attractive. When older persons lose money to a scam it is more difficult for them to recoup their losses, making the consequences even more devastating. Enlisting older people as part of the solution is part of a fresh approach FTC is taking to promote fraud awareness. Older consumers were telling them they don’t want to be labeled as vulnerable victims. This campaign will help persons pass on what they know to peers and the younger generation. For more written resources and education videos visit www.ftc.gov/passiton.

JOIN THE SHARE & CARE CELEBRATION! We are making this a year of celebration in the Share & Care thrift shop at Garden Spot Village. 2017 marks the 15-year anniversary of this thriving enterprise--staffed by volunteers, selling good quality furniture, housewares, decor items, jewelry and accessories. Many residents and their families, as well as staff and community members, have supported the Share & Care through their donations, and purchases. All proceeds support the GSV Benevolent Fund. Throughout the year we will invite you to participate in and learn about a variety of exciting activities, commemorating the anniversary. We have also set a goal of reaching half a million dollars in total sales for the shop by the end of this fiscal year (June 2017). All of your purchases will help us toward this goal in support of the Benevolent Fund! • A timeline of the shop’s 15 years of progress will gradually take shape in the hallway outside the Share & Care. • Articles in the Garden Variety will highlight stories and “fun facts” from the history of the Share & Care. • Special events and promotions throughout the year will be an opportunity to shop for something special and through that, helping us to reach our anniversary goal. • Plans are also taking shape for a party to celebrate the anniversary later this year. Watch for more information!

This month’s Share & Care Fun Fact:

GSV resident Dorothy Morgan was first scheduled for the Monday 10am-Noon shift in the Share & Care when the shop opened in July, 2002. Dorothy continues faithfully serving in this very same shift, 15 years later.
