the real ST. PATRICK
A LOOK AT THE FAMOUS SAINT, AND HIS STRATEGIC MISSIONS.
Wikimedia Commons
‘Tis the season for parades, green beer, shamrocks, and articles talking about why St. Patrick’s day isn’t all about parades, green beer, and shamrocks. First, a few misconceptions about Patrick: Patrick isn’t really a Saint with a capital S, having never been officially canonized by Rome. And Patrick couldn’t have driven the snakes out of Ireland because there were never any snakes there to begin with. He wasn’t even the first evangelist to Ireland (Palladius had been sent in 431, about five years before Patrick went). Patrick isn’t even Irish. He’s from what’s now Dumbarton, Scotland (just northwest of Glasgow).

Patrick was 16 years old in about the year 405, when he was captured in a raid and became a slave in what was still radically pagan Ireland. Far from home, he clung to the religion he had ignored as a teenager. Even though his grandfather had been a priest, and his father a town councilor, Patrick “knew not the true God.” But forced to tend his master’s sheep in Ireland, he spent his six years of bondage mainly in prayer. He escaped at the suggestion of a dream and returned home. Patrick was in his mid-40s when he returned to Ireland. Palladius had not been very successful in his mission, and the returning former slave replaced him. Intimately familiar with the Irish clan system (his former master, Milchu, had been a chieftain), Patrick’s strategy was to convert chiefs first, who would then convert their clans through their influence. Reportedly, Milchu was one of his earliest converts. Though he was not solely responsible for converting the island, Patrick was quite successful. He made missionary journeys all over Ireland, and it soon became known as one of Europe’s Christian centers. This, of course, was very important to fifth-century Christians, for whom Ireland was one of the “ends of the earth.” Source: christianitytoday.com Writen by: Ted Olsen

The event for residents and future residents will be held on Thursday, April 20, 10am-2pm. We anticipate welcoming approximately 80 exhibitors again this year. Expo day is always a fun event which gives attendees the opportunity to learn more about local businesses, to taste delicious treats, and to receive samples, discounts and helpful information. Again this year, residents will receive the exhibitor book the Friday before the event. This booklet will provide you with a list of businesses that are attending and their location at the Expo. Funds raised from the exhibitor fees go to the Benevolent Fund. Mark your calendar so you can enjoy this special day.

MARKETING
Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer
During March, we really gear up for the marathon, which is set for April 8. There’s a lot of excitement and talk about the event. Everything gets finalized and ready for the big day. It creates a lot of energy all across the campus and the surrounding area. Did you know we typically get runners from 30-35 states and a handful from foreign countries? Keep in mind there are plenty of volunteer opportunities this weekend. We also created a Sycamore Springs video which is featured below. You can watch it on the Sycamore Springs website at www.sycamoresprings.net by clicking the Intro Video link on the home page. Feel free to send the link to friends and family members. Your referrals help us spread the word about Sycamore Springs. Or, better yet, invite a friend to a Discover Sycamore Springs luncheon. You’re welcome to extend your own personal touch of hospitality and join them for lunch.

INFLUENCING HEALTH CARE IN JAPAN AND AROUND THE WORLD
Just a few weeks ago, Garden Spot Village was featured in the February 2017 issue of a Japanese trade magazine focusing on innovative senior industry initiatives in Japan, the US and around the world...
THE LUCKY STRAW
As I was going from department to department to check-in, the common comment, as you might imagine was, “Is this your weekend?” The same question popped up as I stopped to talk with residents along the way. One person jokingly commented, “Looks like you drew the short straw.” As we all know, drawing the short straw means the recipient usually gets to do something no one else wants to... SOCIAL SERVICES CONTINUED NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON AGING WARNS ABOUT HEALTH SCAMS
Today, there are more ways than ever to sell untested products—online, TV, postal service, magazines, newspapers, and emails. Is it an ad or a scam? Something might be a scam if it: • Promises a quick, painless, or anti-aging cure • Claims the product is made from a special, secret, or ancient formula • Offers products and services only by mail or from one company • Uses statements or unproven case histories from so-called satisfied patients • Claims to be a cure for a wide range of ailments or untested memory aids • Claims to cure a disease (such as arthritis or Alzheimer’s disease) that hasn’t been cured by medical science • Promises a no-risk, money-back guarantee • Offers an additional free gift or a larger amount of the product as a special promotion • Requires advance payment and claims there is a limited supply of the product The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission are two agencies that work to protect us from health scams. Untested remedies promise false hope and can be harmful with medicines prescribed by doctors. The National Institute on Aging encourages persons to get the facts and talk with their doctors.

WELLNESS MARCH IS FAITH MONTH
Wellness Highlights:
There are Eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family-Friends, Feelings, and Focus. March is also Nutrition Month.
Improve Your Balance and join a program
During this Lenten Season, it would be appropriate to look at our Wellness Facet; Faith. The definition of faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Simply put, the Biblical definition of faith is trusting in something you cannot explicitly prove. There’s an old story about Jeb and the flood that tells us something important about faith. Old Jeb was trapped on his roof as the floodwaters were rising around his house. As he sat there, a neighbor passed by in his rowboat, offering to take him to higher ground. Don’t worry about me, said Jeb. I have faith: The Lord will protect me. A while later, the floodwaters still rising, a rescue squad arrived in a powerboat and ordered Jeb to evacuate. No need, Jeb insisted. My faith is strong. I’ll be fine. A few hours later, when the waters reached the eaves, a National Guard helicopter hovered overhead and lowered a line. But Jeb wouldn’t grab hold. The Lord will provide, he said. Not too long after, Jeb’s house went under, and Jeb with it. When he arrived at the pearly gates, he was none too pleased. Lord, I had such faith in You! cried Jeb. How could you have abandoned me? Abandon you? replied the Lord. What are you talking about? I sent you a rowboat, a powerboat and a helicopter!
Do simple exercises using your brain, muscles, and bones as they work together to improve & maintain your body’s balance and keep you from falling.
Like many of us, Jeb had great faith, but it was a faith built only on miracles that come with flashes of light and trumpet blasts. In truth, God often responds to our faith in humbler ways. It might be a kind driver who lets us merge when we’re stressed from sitting in heavy traffic. Or it could be a newspaper article that describes a support group we desperately need. Or perhaps, it comes in a song on the radio that brings us a cherished, fortifying memory. Each day, angels visit the footsteps of the faithful, leaving gifts that quietly offer God’s grace, comfort and protection. All we have to do is recognize them and pick them up. So, my suggestion for you is to TAKE FIVE minutes a day in order to do something to renew. Here are a few things that can help define what really matters. Try a few for FIVE Minutes… Count your blessings, read a good book, pray, enjoy a good cup of coffee, engage in honest work, show gratitude… Wellness Faith Tips Calendars and Program Schedules are available at the Gardens North Exercise Room, the Pool Deck and the Apartment Suites Lobby.
RENOVATIONS UPDATE:
Renovations are still on schedule and due to be completed in April. The pool and spa are open and water aerobic programs are continuing although all the locker rooms are closed. We have five changing cabanas on the pool deck and one changing room near the restrooms. The restrooms down the hall between Adult Day Services and Administration offices are available. The Fitness equipment has been relocated to Gardens North Exercise Room and will stay there. Our Wellness programs have been relocated to Gardens North Exercise Room or Gardens West Conference Room.
