Take our Daughters & Sons to Work Day THURSDAY, APRIL 27

The goal of this special day is to provide an opportunity for employees’ children and grandchildren to not only shadow, but to experience, first-hand, the work place setting. Special events have been planned with young people in mind. On April 27, 2017, Garden Spot Village and its employees will participate in the annual Take Our Daughters And Sons To WorkŽ Day sponsored by the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation. Garden Spot Village and its employees invite their daughters, sons and grandchildren, between the ages of 7 and 16, to attend. The girls and boys will be participating in interactive learning activities, which will lead this New Generation at Work towards a future where they can participate fully in work, family, and community. The theme for this year is Count on Me which reflects the options youth and adults have, in order to make the world a better place on a personal level, in the family, in the community, in the country, and in the whole world through making better choices. It is the intent that the employees and residents of Garden Spot Village will serve as role models and, will inspire the girls and boys to strive to attain their full potential. Moreover, girls and boys will discover how courses such as science, math, English, and business can better prepare them for a wide variety of jobs and will become aware of the skills needed to be hired in specific professions.

As we identify the value of Community, it is a recognition that we are hardwired to care, connect, and serve...

SOCIAL SERVICES COUNTED Online Tip-offs to Prevent Rip-offs

A few clicks, and a purchase can be delivered within days. Online shopping can be a convenient way to save time and money, especially when transportation becomes a challenge. The Federal Trade Commission recommends we keep the following tip-offs in mind: • Anyone can set up an online shop. Before placing an order, confirm the shop has a physical address and phone number where they can be reached if there is a problem with the order. • Scammers often offer luxury brands at ridiculously low prices to trick us. • Clicking on pop-up ads can download viruses, spyware, malware, and other unwanted software to the computer. Best bet is to avoid pop-up ads. • Legitimate sellers do not restrict payment to a wire transfer or prepaid cards.

SHARE & CARE THRIFT SHOP CELEBRATES 15 YEARS

Founder Bonnie Gerig Shares Recollections This year marks the 15-year anniversary of the Share & Care Thrift Shop at Garden Spot Village. Throughout the year we’re celebrating this landmark in a variety of ways, including creation of a timeline in the hallway outside the shop. Be sure to stop by and take a look! We’ve also set a half million dollar sales goal for the lifetime of the shop by the end of this fiscal year (June). Your donations and purchases will help us to reach this goal! In this article, founder Bonnie Gerig recalls how it all began. Fifteen years ago Bonnie Gerig, then GSV Marketing Director, saw that many residents moving to or within Garden Spot Village had furniture and other household goods they no longer needed. As she thought about that need, she envisioned a small shop that could sell these items. Plus, she imagined, the shop’s sales could benefit the Benevolent Fund. Gerig spoke with then Chief Executive Officer Nevin Kraybill, who encouraged her to find a room to open the shop. A maintenance storage room on the lower level of Village Square soon became the home for the new Share & Care Thrift Shop. A small committee of residents began to plan and dream for the shop’s future, discussing policies and procedures, advertising and promotion. Before they knew it, donations started pouring in and the shop was open. The committee constantly worked to expand and improve the store, adding shelving and displays. An article in a local newspaper promoted the good work the women were doing and the public wanted to shop too! The shop’s location near an outside entrance was perfect for public traffic, and it soon became known in the New Holland community as a good place to find quality used furniture. In retrospect, Gerig says, “I never had any idea it was going to grow and have the impact that it does now. The fact that volunteers give so much time to the shop means that all of the revenue can go to the Benevolent Fund. It’s been a winwin for everyone.”
