HEALTH & SAFETY

Cindy Rouvre, Staff Development Coordinator/Employee Health & Safety

SAFETY THOUGHTS from the National Safety Councel The National Safety Council recently celebrated National Safety Month in June. This seems like an ideal time to send a few reminders on creating and maintaining a safe environment on the Garden Spot Village Campus. Responsibility for everyone’s safety starts with each of us. •

When walking or operating a scooter in the hallways, remember to stay to the right side of the hallway, especially when turning at blind corners.

When entering an elevator, ensure that all persons have exited the elevator first before entering.

hen exiting an elevator, always face forward on the exit, unless another person can ensure W that it is safe to back out.

hen walking pets in hallways, ensure the leash is short enough to control your pets from W nearby walkers. Long leashes can contribute to tripping hazards.

ith the nicer weather, there are a lot more pedestrians on campus. Be alert at crosswalks and W mindful of the speed limits.

I f you observe water on the floor, place something on it or near it, or stay by it until it can is cleaned. Those with limited vision may not be able to see it.

If we all practice a little responsibility, we can all make Garden Spot Village a safer place to live and work!

Mindful Taste & Learn

Guest Artist: Emily Smucker-Beidler

10am or 2:30pm, Harvest Table Topic: Mindful Mediation

JULY 1-31

Emily has been inspired by the bookmarks made by Mennonite schoolmasters in the late 1700’s through the early 1800’s. Instead of punishing incorrect answers with a dunce cap or sitting in a corner, as was the norm, Mennonite schoolmasters such as Christopher Dock kept track of the number of correct answers for each child with a checkmark after their name on the board. Whoever had the most checkmarks received the treasured bookmark at the end of the day, lovingly made by the teacher. There was little writing on these small drawings, usually just a bird or flowers. As a Mennonite Art Teacher, Emily wanted to honor these former teachers with a new series of her own.

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT’S JULY ALREADY?!

At the beginning of each month we do a video entitled Endeavor: Highlighting the Happenings at Garden Spot Village. The purpose of the video is to point people to the online version of The Garden Variety. We e-mail the video to everyone for whom we have an e-mail address. If we have your e-mail address in our system you should receive the video. If you don’t, we’d be happy to send it to you. Just visit gsvnet.org/endeavor and signup. Please, feel free to e-mail Endeavor to your friends, family members, and anyone else. The more people that get it, the better. The Share & Care Thrift Store is 15 years young as of 2017, marking a significant milestone in its growth as a thriving enterprise supporting the Garden Spot Village Benevolent Fund. We also want to celebrate the creative “recycling” of housewares, furniture, jewelry, handbags and much more that happens on a daily basis, and to thank our volunteers for the incredible time and energy they give to this effort. Join us to celebrate this anniversary, and to learn a bit more about the many ways that GSV residents and others have supported the Share & Care through donations, volunteer hours and of course shopping. View our 15-year timeline, hear comments from people involved from the very beginning, and enjoy informal visiting, while sampling hors d’oeuvres and mocktails.

We’re Looking for Your Share & Care Photos!

The 15-year celebration will also include a slideshow of “where they are now” photos: items purchased at Share & Care that now have a new home. We would like to include your purchases (or those of your family members) in this slideshow! Two ways to submit: • Send your digital photo as an email attachment to dfast@gardenspotvillage.org • Call us (6204) to come to your home and photograph any items you have. • DEADLINE: Friday, July 21 Thank you so much for participating in this fun project.

CARING CONNECTIONS ORIENTATION

TUESDAY, AUGUST 22, 9AM-3PM, BOARD ROOM Lunch is provided during the training.

Caring Connections, a volunteer visitation program at Garden Spot Village, is once again offering an orientation session. Participants will learn about the program, and find out how building a caring relationship with a fellow resident, who might be struggling, can enrich your own life, as well. Staff will lead sessions on Skilled Nursing, Personal Care and Memory Support – as well as spiritual aspects of reaching out to others in our community. Our own GSV Connectors will also share their blessings of visiting. Please contact Deborah Fast (6204), Ruthann Ware (6851) or Marsha Dawson (6667) if you are interested, or if you have any questions.
