There’s certainly nothing wrong with a strawberry-banana or mixed-berry smoothie—two classics that have reached Hall of Smoothie Fame status. But admit it: Those combos are a bit ho-hum. On a hunt for flavors that would shake up our taste buds, we set out to find some new ingredients to toss into our blenders. We knew we needed to hit on the nutrition trio of fiber, protein, and vitamins so that we’d wind up with a treat that would fill us up and reboot our energy—but from there we simply let our flavor cravings be our guide. Take your pick from our top choices, and whir away. Read the full Mindful article: www.mindful.sodexo.com/recipes/whip-up-a-better-smoothie

COME AND SEE OUR NEW MODEL

The Sycamore Springs model is open and Kelly’s office is in the dining room! Feel free to visit her during the week to see the model and the Community Building. Her hours are 8:30am-4:30pm Monday through Friday and there will be tall “Model Open” banner by the road. If she has an appointment in Village Square she will take the banner down. Some longtime residents have said, “I wasn’t sure about The Harvest Table until it was done. Now, it’s the best place to eat in the area! I wasn’t sure about Sycamore Springs either, but now that I’ve seen it I’m going to invite my friends to come see it. It’s everything that you would expect from Garden Spot Village.” Sycamore Springs residents are saying the same thing, “even though we signed-up sight unseen, we knew that if Garden Spot was doing it, it had to be good and it’s living up to all our expectations and more!” Two are on hold and we’d love for you to help us fill the final ones! Invite your friends!

YOUR MONKEY – MY MONKEY?

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 23, 10AM GARDEN TOWERS

Saying “no” can be difficult, particularly when you care about people. Refusing someone’s request for help can feel terribly uncomfortable. Choosing not to assist someone can feel like a blatant opposition to your personal values and your faith. Having a different opinion than those who live around you, can be challenging, particularly when others are insistent and unwilling to listen. And yet sometimes it is ok – and even a good thing – to tell someone, “No, I can’t do this for you,” or “I disagree with that.” The idea of having a monkey on your back is a metaphor for carrying someone else’s burdens or responsibilities. When one person starts helping another, the helper often starts taking on this role as a primary responsibility; but is it truly the helper’s burden to bear? Because this is such a real, yet often difficult and uncomfortable situation, the Chaplains and Social Services teams have invited Gerald and Marlene Kaufman. As co-authors of “Freedom Fences: How to Set Limits That Free You to Enjoy Your Marriage and Family,” they share insights and wisdom into the how’s, why’s, and what’s of setting boundaries. This presentation is for residents, volunteers and staff. It’s for anyone who has ever helped someone. It’s for anyone who has ever worked with or for someone. It’s for people who live among others. In short, it’s for everyone.

WELLNESS AUGUST IS FRIENDS & FAMILY MONTH OR SOCIAL WELLNESS MONTH There are eight Facets to the Framework of your wellness. They are Fitness, Faith, Finances, Footprint, Food, Family-Friends-Fun, Feelings and Focus. Pick up a copy the August Friends & Family calendar at the Wellness Lobby or Apartment Suites Welcome Center. Social Wellness is that warm fuzzy feeling of overall happiness — in mind, body, and spirit. Sure, there are millions of things that make us smile and get our endorphins going, but we picked out 14 surefire ways to celebrate Social Wellness month by — what else? — being healthy. Check out the picks below and let us know how you find your own happiness in the comments. 1. Talk to a friend. Put the “social” into Social Wellness with a bit of conversation. Speaking with a friend and chatting away has been shown to improve quality of life. 2. Take some alone time. Sometimes life is one constant hum, but a little bit of alone time can calm the brain and even inspire creativity. 3. Grab a coffee (or a cup of caffeine). Relax over a cup of caffeine? It may seem like strange advice but caffeine has a number of healthboosting properties (don’t try a 5-Hour Energy drink?). 4. Go for a walk. Exercise isn’t just a great way to get in shape; it also produces endorphins which help create a feeling of well-being. Try walking somewhere scenic to get healthy and happy at the same time. 5. Volunteer somewhere special. Volunteering is a great way to help other people, but studies show it’s also a good way for us to help ourselves to lead healthier lives. 6. Eat your vegetables. Yeah, we’ve heard it before, “eat your vegetables.” But a balanced diet with lots of important nutrients helps the body function at its peak. 7. Get some sun (and vitamin D). The sun supports all life, but it also makes us happier, thanks to a constant shot of vitamin D. Get some rays, but make sure to stay protected and avoid nasty sun damage. 8. Go on vacation. Vacations are meant to make us happier, so get out there (or simply stay in) and soak in the health benefits of some rest and relaxation. 9. Get a pet. Cute, right? Well getting a pet might also be the healthiest decision we make all week. A study found that pet owners had lower levels of stress and increased levels of daily activity. 10. Laugh a little more. Laughter is one of the best medicines out there. Have a chuckle to sleep better, feel better, and even protect against heart attacks. 11. Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep and recovery are just as important as leading an active life. Go to bed early or sneak a nap for some happy, healthy dreams. 12. Nosh some chocolate (but not too much!). Mmmm, nothing makes us happier than eating chocolate. Sugar-high aside, dark chocolate (70 percent cocoa and up) is actually rich with antioxidants that do a body good. Just remember, chocolate isn’t a superfood so don’t go cocoa-crazy. 13. Learn to relax a bit. Inhale, exhale — relaxation is a good way to clear the mind and find some inner happiness. 14. Commune with nature at home. Plants help create some serious feng shui So buy some green and inhale the good vibes. Just don’t forget to water them!
