SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14 IMAGINE a beautiful fall day…the smell of BBQ chicken cooking and other delicious food… the Silent Auction and

the Festival Country Store with beautiful handcrafted quilted items, wooden items and artwork…Apple dumplings and other delicious homemade baked goods…craft tables…exciting children’s activities…and lots of fun for all ages… Garden Spot Village’s 21st annual Fall Festival is just a few weeks away on Saturday, October 14. For months some residents have been working to prepare for this special day and many others will be quite busy in the weeks leading up to the event. Your efforts make it possible for Garden Spot Village to have a successful Festival that raises money for the Benevolent Fund.

SILENT AUCTION COLLECTION DATE: TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5 9am-noon outside the Administrative Offices Important: This year’s silent auction will have tables featuring gift baskets, items handcrafted by residents and friends, and gift certificates from businesses. • Do you have something that you have made/created? (Wall hangings, paintings, knitted baby sweaters or other children’s clothing, doll clothes, small wooden items, etc.) • Do you have some small new items that could be grouped with other things to make a gift basket? (Jams/jellies…napkins…children’s items…cooking utensils…bath products…cards/stationary…books… sewing items…craft items…etc.) Also, if you have a family member or friend who could provide a gift certificate or gift basket from their business, this would be appreciated.

SHARE-A-MEAL PROGRAM This is the ninth year for the Share-a-Meal Program. Over the years there have been many delicious meals and fun stories about the gatherings. One of the greatest challenges is getting enough volunteers to host gatherings. If you would be willing to host a dinner, luncheon, brunch, breakfast, tea, or some other food adventure, please get in touch with resident Carolyn Nemec (6554) or Linda Dodge (6215). Gatherings have ranged in size from 4 guests to 20 guests. The host/hostess selects the menu, date and time of the event. If you wish, several residents could host an event at one location or there could be a progressive meal going to several locations. If you don’t like to cook but you have a son or daughter who enjoys cooking, maybe you could host an event at your place and have someone else cook. Examples of meals from past years: Pork | Crab Cakes | Lamb | Prime Rib | Italian | Chuck Wagon | Moroccan | Salmon. In addition to the delicious food, attendees and hosts/hostesses have commented about the wonderful fellowship.

APPLE PIE CONTEST The apple pie contest will be held again this year. To get the guidelines and an application, please stop by Resident Services.

INVITE YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS Please think about family members and friends that you can invite. Personal invitations really help to increase attendance. Coming to New Holland for the Festival can be a wonderful day trip. Thank you for helping to advertise our annual Fall Festival.

MARKETING

Scott Miller, Chief Marketing Officer

“ I T TA K E S A C O M M U N I T Y ” is a common statement you hear at Garden Spot Village.

With 6 homes left at Sycamore Springs, we’d love for the entire Garden Spot community to help wrap up those final few. Three offer single floor living and, are roughly the same size as our deluxe end cottages. If you know anyone who has interest in a cottage, feel free to invite them to check out the 3 remaining cottages at Sycamore Springs. Driving past the homes with drive in basements along Kinzer Avenue I had the idea that if the four of them were connected, it would look like a townhouse. The fact that they are separate houses is very appealing these days. From the front, they are extremely attractive. If you know anyone who has an aging parent living with them or an adult child over the age of 55, one of the homes with a drive-in basement would be perfect for them. They were built with intergenerational living in mind. September is a time of the year when people are looking to make a change, so it’s a good time to mention them to family, friends and acquaintances.

SOCIAL SERVICES CONTINUED

Thank You!

Thank you for the amazing privilege of serving together in order to create a really great place to both live and work – Garden Spot Village! We have had changes and growth in my 22 years here but the commitment to enrich the lives of older adults as an expression of Christ’s love is woven into all that has been and will be created. Residents, families, staff, administration, and the Board have each made significant contributions in creating this beautiful tapestry we call “home.” As I wrote in my letter of resignation, “I work for and with the best.” Only after a lot of prayers and discussions was I able to accept the new challenge and opportunity at Tel Hai Retirement Community. My relationships with the residents and families of GSV are absolute treasures! What an honor it has been to walk with you in life, both the good and the challenging times. I have learned so much from you. I wish you all God’s richest blessings and am confident that He will continue to shine in and thru you here at Garden Spot Village! With love,

Karen Horning

SHARE & CARE CELEBRATES 15 YEARS

Thank you to everyone who joined the 15th anniversary celebration of the Share & Care Thrift Shop at Garden Spot Village! It was fascinating to hear stories and see photos of the early days of the shop, and to share memories from over the years. We also expressed our thanks to the Maintenance department for moving items to and from the shop, and to the Wood Shop for fixing and refurbishing items so that we can offer them for sale. The Share & Care has been a ministry to many people, and continues to assist residents and their families in stages of transition, and of course to provide support to the GSV Benevolent Fund. We were also excited to announce our final number for total sales over the 15 years since the shop opened in July 2002. These sales came to $539,100.81. This is also the time of year that we announce sales figures for the most recent fiscal year, which ended on June 30. Share & Care sales totaled $71,100.81. Bargain Barn sales totaled $7,101.34. Gift in Kind donations to departments totaled $2,878.93. Sales for the fiscal year 2016-17 are the highest annual total to date, exceeding our last record of $60,200.10 in fiscal year 2014-15. A huge thanks to everyone who made this possible through donations, volunteering, and shopping. Please continue to support this effort so that we can reach $1 million in sales!

VILLAGE STORE PROFILE: John and Rhoda Weaver

Shortly after moving into their cottage in Azalea Court in the spring of 1996, John and Rhoda Weaver agreed to set up a small store in the Apartment Suites Welcome Center. The Weavers used their 18 years of retail experience owning The Back Porch, a gift shop in downtown New Holland, as they established a retail space at Garden Spot Village. At the start, a four foot card rack and shelves on the wall offered greeting cards for all occasions, as well as snacks, gifts and $5-$10 toys for children. John and Rhoda managed the store with a handful of volunteers. Their involvement in the store gave them a window into the Garden Spot Village community that few experienced. They greeted their neighbors and customers by name and created relationships across the community. “We learned to know people because we saw them more often in the shop,” says John. “It was fun,” says Rhoda. The retail space and the store’s offerings grew over time. In 2001, the Village Store began to offer groceries, refrigerated drinks and dairy items. The store continued to offer gift items for young children in addition to scarves, specialty socks and t-shirts for adults. John and Rhoda continued to manage the store, volunteering 30 hours each week. When Garden Spot Village built additional facilities and designated a specific space for retail, the store grew again. John remembers setting product on folding tables until the fixtures and other displays were ready. In 2012 John and Rhoda reduced their involvement in the store, although John continued to volunteer, placing grocery orders. The most recent renovation to the Village Square in 2014 established a new retail space and the Village Store became Refresh Gift Shop. Of the transformation Rhoda says “What was a little shop a long time ago is now a boutique!” John continues to volunteer four hours each week, ordering dairy and snack items for the Refresh Gift Shop. “John and Rhoda really gave life to the original gift shop here at Garden Spot Village,” says Deborah Fast, who began as Director of Volunteer Services in 2012. “John continues to quietly support the store, faithfully placing orders and remaining my go-to person for detail questions. He knows our customers well, and has always been devoted to keeping them happy.”

SAFE DRIVING

AT GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE

• GSV has numerous pedestrians on our walkways and in our parking lots. Cars are expected to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or parking situations. There is a chance that pedestrians may have hearing and vision limitations. For this reason and others, we all should yield the right-ofway to anyone walking. • Our posted speed limit is 20 mph. This is for everyone’s benefit – residents, staff and the traveling public. • Obey all STOP signs. Our stop signs are located at important intersections on campus where traffic needs to stop for other oncoming vehicles, or watch for pedestrian traffic. Be sure to obey all STOP signs. We are thankful for GSV as a great place to live and work. We want our Residents and Staff healthy and injury-free. We all have a role to fill in maintaining a safe and vibrant community. Scottish Country Dancing Tuesdays 1:30-3pm in the Fitness Room Scottish Country Dancing is a form of social dancing or the ballroom dance of Scotland. It is not to be confused with Highland dance where a solo dancer performs to bagpipe music. It became popular in the 18th century and in 1923 the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society was founded. Today there are more than 13,000 members and many more non-members dancing worldwide. Scottish Country Dancing is the forerunner of the American Square Dance; it is dancing in groups or “sets of 3 or more couples. There are a dozen basic figures, quick time dances such as reels, jigs and a slower tempo Strathspey. Dances date from the 1700’s with new ones constantly being devised. The music is provided by fiddle, piano, accordion, flute and drums (not bagpipes). Studies have shown that Scottish Country Dancing is a valuable activity for maintaining both physical and mental health. Join the fun – no partner, or experience needed, just a pair of soft soled shoes.
