CONNECTING YOU TO YOUR PURPOSE

“We are the human resources department of volunteers—without payroll” Jodi Lefever, Volunteer Director Assistant, says with a smile. “People who are interested in volunteering start with us,” adds Daryl Groff, Director of Volunteer Services. Many people move to Garden Spot Village for the robust volunteer program. Each year more than 400 residents volunteer an average of 45,000 combined hours. It’s truly inspiring! Resident volunteers repeatedly say that volunteering quickly connects them to their neighbors, gives them purpose and inspires them. This vision for volunteering is contagious!

Learn more: New residents and volunteers are encouraged to email, call, or visit Volunteer Services in order to pick up an application. Complete an Application: Just like when you applied for a job, you will provide valuable information to the Volunteer Services team on your application. This information helps match you to the right volunteer opportunities. You will also need to complete a background check, as required by Pennsylvania law.

Attend Orientation: About seven times a year the Volunteer Services team provides a 45-minute orientation session in the Theater. The next orientation is set for November 10 at 10am. During the orientation, we walk you through the volunteer handbook, share information about volunteer opportunities, explain how to record your volunteer hours and more.

Participate in an Interview: After each orientation, Daryl arranges to meet with each volunteer one-on-one. This valuable conversation allows you to share a little more about your interests, skills and goals for volunteering.

Try New Opportunities: Based on the interests and skills you’ve shared, Jodi and Amanda Feeg match you with volunteer opportunities. They may contact you directly with volunteer opportunities or share your name with other GSV departments.

Find your Niche: Maybe you’ll excel at serving customers at Share & Care, stocking the shelves at Linden, cleaning up leaves and sticks after storms or helping to administer the U.S. News & World Reports Survey. You’ll find a new volunteer opportunity that is unique to you!

“The opportunities we provide are fluid,” Jodi says. “We are constantly updating our volunteer opportunities, as new ones pop up, and old ones fade away.”

TIPS TO CELEBRATE A HEALTHY NOVEMBER & THANKSGIVING

Thanksgiving is that time of year when we celebrate the harvest and blessings of the previous year. This is why the tradition calls for a huge family feast. You can enjoy the traditional food and not go overboard with eating while having fun times with friends and family. Set yourself up for a healthy November. (Remember, it’s not what you eat between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but what you eat between Christmas and Thanksgiving that keeps you healthy.)

1. Be Proactive: Exercise, burn those extra calories.

2. Eat 3 meals day: Skipping meals leads to overeating.

3. Pick your favorites: Don’t waste your appetite on dishes you can eat anytime.

4. Avoid second rounds: Save it for tomorrow instead.

5. Slow down: Eat slower and enjoy every bite, Nibble and Sip not Gobble and Gulp.

6. Plan your Plate: Start with your greens, then turkey, then potatoes (the 1st food you put on your plate is the biggest portion).

7. Plan for Dessert: Would you rather have a roll or pie?

8. Wellness is more than fitness - it has many different dimensions to help make you well-rounded. Just like spokes on a wheel, work to balance and keep it rolling. There are various positive aspects of wellness. Strive for a balanced life.

FORMER IVEP VOLUNTEER VISITS GSV!

EUN HEE served as an IVEP volunteer through Mennonite Central Committee from August 2017 through July 2018. During her year at Garden Spot Village she made many memories. She took piano lessons from Hollace Tafeen, traveled to North Carolina with a Travel with Purpose Trip, dressed up as a rabbit for Easter and helped to make a boat for the Boat Regatta.

When she returned to Seoul, South Korea, she says, “It was so touching to receive mail from New Holland.” She was thankful for the residents who continued to stay in contact with her. She recently stopped in, while she was back in the U.S. for a work trip. As she walked through Garden Spot Village she was thankful to reconnect with friends. She also spent time with her “American Mom,” Colleen Musselman. The two enjoyed a trip to Lapp Valley for ice cream, Yoder’s Buffet and New Holland Re-Uzit.
