JUNE FOCUS 2023 Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College
In partnership with Gettysburg College, Garden Spot Village is pleased to offer a one-day experience at the 2023 Civil War Institute Summer Conference. The conference runs June 9-14.
The website states, “For nearly 40 years, the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College has hosted a premiere annual summer conference bringing leading historians and public audiences together for lectures, battlefield tours, small group discussions, and roundtable conversations about the Civil War era.”
This year’s conference will feature a variety of topics including: Lincoln as Commander in Chief, the Civil War in Appalachia, Harriet Tubman, the Army of Tennessee and more. Participants will enjoy tours of historic sites and battlefields in and near Gettysburg.
On Saturday, June 10, participating Garden Spot Village residents will travel to Gettysburg College to experience the conference. Opportunities for the day include sessions about Robert Gould Shaw, Written Words of Illiterate Confederates, Lincoln and his Generals, Weather and the Battle of Gettysburg and more. Participants will also enjoy tours of the battlefields.
Cheryl and Jim Joyner, Garden Spot Village residents since October 2020, look forward to attending the conference. Cheryl says, “We’ve been to Gettysburg previously. Jim has had a great interest in the Civil War and everything about it since we visited. As we reviewed the titles of the sessions and the experiences available for this trip, we decided it could be very interesting.”
A retired fourth grade teacher, Cheryl spent many years teaching her students about the history of Pennsylvania, including Gettysburg. She says, “All things Pennsylvania are very interesting to me.” Cheryl adds, “I really enjoy all of the continuing education opportunities offered here at Garden Spot Village.”

COMMUNITY CORNER: ELANCO PUBLIC LIBRARY
Located at 11 Chestnut Drive, the north entrance to Garden Spot Village, ELANCO Public Library offers a host of opportunities for Garden Spot Village residents, team members and the New Holland community. Events for all ages fill the library’s calendar including Roundtable Book Discussions, Preschool Storytime, Teen Tuesday Writer’s Club, Toddler Thursdays, LEGO Creation Club, Hooks and Needles: Yarn Craft Club and more.
Garden Spot’s Digital Storyteller Sharon Sparkes and her daughter Piper participate in Music and Movement on Saturday mornings. Sharon says, “I cannot thank the ELANCO Library enough for providing a wonderful Music and Movement class for toddlers and preschoolers. As a mother of a three-year-old, I have been searching for engaging and interactive music and arts activities for my daughter, especially on weekends. The library’s children’s section is well-stocked with engaging stories, and the class is an excellent way for my daughter to learn and enjoy music at the same time. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a great resource for children’s activities.”
A unique partnership between the Garden Spot Village Library and the ELANCO Public Library allows residents and team members to request books from the Lancaster Library System and have them delivered and returned to Garden Spot Village. This convenient relationship saves time for residents and team members.
In addition, the library offers more than books! Card holders can check out free or reduced cost museum passes for Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum, the Ephrata Cloister, the Lancaster Museum of Art, Make717 Innovation Center and more. Card holders can also check out STEM, Music and Art Study Kits, American Girl Dolls & Themed Kits, popular games, DVDs and CDs.
Anna D’Agostino, the library’s director, participates in events at Garden Spot Village and brings her book bike. Her attendance during the Kids Fun Run, the Garden Spot Village Library Book Giveaway and the Business Expo also build relationships in our greater community. Reciprocally, Garden Spot Village participates in Library events like the Summer Reading Kick-Off Event, scheduled for June 3. The library property is owned and maintained by Garden Spot Village.

GARDEN SPOT UNVEILS “THE ROAD TO GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE”
One of the requests we often receive is “how can I learn more about Garden Spot Village?” We offer quarterly Look & Learn Events, which sell out very quickly. These daytime events often eliminate people who are still working and who really just want some basic information. As a result, in June, we plan to release The Road to Garden Spot Village – an online class, which will offer nine modules over the course of nine weeks. Participants will be able to complete the modules at their own pace. This online class offers a great opportunity for people who live around the country to learn more about our community in the comfort of their homes. When the course is live, we invite you to share the link with your friends and family. In addition, the sales team is looking for volunteers who would be willing to open their homes for tours by prospective residents. If you are interested in this volunteer opportunity, please contact Resident Services at 717.355.6000.

U.S. SURGEON GENERAL’S ADVISORY RELEASES REPORT
In May, Dr Vivek Murthy, US Surgeon General, released an 80-page report “Our Epidemic of Loneliness and Isolation.” The report provides strong empirical evidence that feeling connected in a community and having supportive relationships leads to higher levels of satisfaction, purpose, and well-being while providing data showing the detrimental impact of loneliness on health.
“It (loneliness) is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety and premature death. The mortality impact of being socially disconnected is similar to that caused by smoking up to 15 cigarettes a day, and even greater than that associated with obesity and physical inactivity.”
These are concerning statistics since more than one in two adults in America report experiencing profound loneliness. The report is a call to action, a “call to build a movement to mend the social facric of our nation.”
We are encouraged to take steps, individually and as a community, to improve our social connections. Sharing a meal with friends, picking up the phone to call a family member, performing acts of service are all mentioned in the report as ways you and I can live healthier, more productive, and more fulfilled lives. Sign up to be or have a Caring Connector, join a GSC Micro Community, participate in a Support Group, take an exercise class or stop by social services for other ideas. Being connected is vital to health and wellbeing.
PETALS & PLANTS
“I remember my first experience gardening. I was six or seven and my grandmother said, ‘Pick out a seed packet and we’ll plant it.’ I chose a packet of Bachelor’s Buttons and we planted them together,” says Anne Nelson, Garden Spot Village resident since August 2020. Gardening has been a passion for Anne ever since then. She learned about Petals & Plants, a new volunteer opportunity at Garden Spot, and joined the group. She’s currently providing leadership for the fledgling group as it plans for the 2023 growing season. Petals & Plants offers an opportunity for gardeners throughout Garden Spot Communities to grow flowers together with the goal of selling floral bouquets throughout the summer and early fall and also providing floral bouquets to decorate the common areas at Garden Spot Village. A group of five to ten independent living residents will tend eight raised beds located near the aeroponic greenhouse. The group started eucalyptus and snapdragon seeds in seed trays in the greenhouse; then transplanted the seedlings in mid-May. Zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, statice, ammi and rudbeckia seeds were also planted. Anne says, “We are growing everything from seeds this year; it’s an experiment and a project we need to grow into. I love gardening and seeing things grow and, this is a project that gives us purpose and a reason to work together.” She hopes that other volunteers will join the group. “We need help with planting, maintenance and picking flowers, as well as designing and arranging bouquets.”
Residents in Mountain View will tend vegetable plants and flowers in a raised bed located just outside the doors of Fireside Café. Residents in the Skilled Nursing households at Garden Spot Village and Maple Farm will also tend flowers in raised beds.
Laura Glick, activities director at Maple Farm says, “I’m thankful for this opportunity because residents can experience so many sensory benefits when they get their gardening gloves on, put their hands in the dirt and reminisce through planting seeds and growing flowers.”
Marcia Parsons, community engagement coordinator for Garden Spot Village believes that this is the first project at Garden Spot that will include residents from all levels of care and independent living. It will also be the first collaborative volunteer project. The focus of this group is for residents to partner together to volunteer. Perhaps one partner may assist in cutting the flowers and the other may assist in making floral arrangements, if one cannot physically cut the flowers.
Marcia says, “I see the approach as coming from a strengths perspective instead of focusing on what a person cannot do. The partnership will look at the strengths of both people in order to determine how they work together. This is not a volunteer opportunity to do for a neighbor but to do with a neighbor.”
To learn more about volunteering with Petals & Plants, call Volunteer Services at 717.355.6098.
TIPS FOR A HEALTHY SUMMER BY THE CDC’S NATIONAL CENTER FOR CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION AND HEALTH PROMOTION
Follow these tips to help prevent chronic disease and have a #HealthySummer.
1. MOVE MORE, SIT LESS: Physical activity every week. Get at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity.
TIP: Physical activity has immediate benefits for your health: better sleep and reduced anxiety are two benefits.
2. WEAR SUNSCREEN & INSECT REPELLENT: Use shade, widebrimmed hats, clothing that covers, and broadspectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 for sun protection. Use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants to prevent mosquito bites and ticks.
TIPS: Apply sunscreen before insect repellent. After you come indoors, check your clothing, body and pets for ticks. Reapply sunscreen after 2 hours and after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.
3. KEEP COOL IN EXTREME HEAT: Extreme heat can be dangerous for everyone, but it may be especially dangerous for people with chronic medical conditions. Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Stay informed.
4. EAT HEALTHY FOODS: Delicious fruits and veggies make any summer meal healthier.
TIP: Healthy eating supports muscles, strengthens bones, and boosts immunity.
5. CHOOSE YOUR DRINKS WISELY: Drink water (fluoridated tap or unsweetened bottled or sparkling) instead of sugary or alcoholic drinks to reduce calories and stay safe.
TIP: Add slices of fruit to water for a refreshing, low-calorie drink.
