As we look ahead to the 2023 Village Christmas Market, slated to take place on December 2, 2023, now is the time to create. As a community we work together, making items to sell, with the joy of “paying it forward” and supporting the Benevolent Fund as a vendor at the Makers Market.

Whether you are a painter, potter, quilter, crafter, cross stitcher, wood shop or metal shop maker, the summer months are a perfect time to create new items for this year’s event.

We look forward to the Makers Market this year. Building community one stitch, brush, nail and hammer at a time makes all the difference.

MAY FOCUS: Meet the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Music Director

Garden Spot Village is pleased to partner with Lancaster Symphony Orchestra. This community-based orchestra, founded in 1947, offers an opportunity for local musicians – with a variety of professional backgrounds – to continue to pursue their passion for music. The orchestra also offers opportunities for members of the Lancaster County community to experience high-quality music performances right here in Lancaster.

For more than 75 years, the orchestra has sought to provide the vibrant arts community in Lancaster with outstanding performances, unique repertoire and educational services rooted in a belief that music is fundamental to human industry and ambition. The community was quick to embrace its new orchestra, at the start. This support continues today.

For the last several years, the orchestra has performed at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Lancaster. The group looks forward to a new location for the 2023-2024 season at the Gardner Theatre at Lancaster Country Day School. Last fall, the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra welcomed a new music director, Michael Butterman.

Music director of four American orchestras and a sought-after guest conductor, Michael is acclaimed for his creative artistry and innovative programming. He has a deep commitment to audience development and community engagement. In addition to his leadership of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra, he is the Music Director of the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra, Shreveport Symphony and the Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra.

One of the ways Lancaster Symphony Orchestra engages the local community is through Neighborhood Performances. Geared toward older adults and students, these performances are “pay-what-you-will.” The organization also provides instruments, on loan, to students through their Gift of Music program and grants to music teachers in the School District of Lancaster in order to purchase materials and instrument accessories for students through Play it Forward.

Each Open House included nearly 50 guests – a mix of prospective and future residents interested in learning more about Garden Spot Village. Volunteers graciously hosted our guests, answering questions and sharing why they love their home!

Also, we are thankful to our volunteers who help us to host Look & Learn quarterly. We will welcome guests for Look & Learn on Wednesday, May 24. While the event is currently sold out, if you have friends or family who would like to attend, please ask them to contact Resident Services at 717.355.6000 to be placed on a waiting list in case of cancellations. In addition, Resident Services will soon be reaching out to schedule tour guides for this event. STORY SHACKS – YEAR 2

Welcome to the second annual season of the GSV Story Shacks! Our Cultural Literacy Committee is happy to be offering reading on the theme of Indigenous Peoples of North America. It is our hope that GSV residents and guests will enjoy learning more about our Native inhabitants through fiction and non-fiction, alike. Donations on this theme can be added to the Story Shacks at any time. Please donate books only that have an Indigenous Peoples theme. Suggested time to keep a book is 2 weeks. The newly decorated mini-libraries were placed around campus in late April. Please feel free to stop by the Story Shacks to take a book, leave a book, or to enjoy reading a book, as you relax at the Story Shack. Many thanks to members of the Art Guild for the bright and colorful new look of the Story Shacks and to the Woodshop members for maintenance of the Shacks!

NEW HOLLAND & WEAVERLAND VALLEY TOUR

The recent bus trip to the Welsh Mountain was an enjoyable learning experience for many. Now there will be an opportunity for additional learning about the Eastern Lancaster County culture by participating in a bus trip, in June, which will focus on people and places in the New Holland/Weaverland Valley area. Lou Ann Miller, Don Horning, and Ken Sensenig will provide stories and insights into our local community culture. A sign-up sheet is available at Resident Services for you to pre-register for this trip.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY – MOSES

A new Women’s Bible Study taught by Sally Mittelstadt and Liz Givens will be offered. The class will focus on the life of Moses. All women are invited!

We are passionate about supporting organizations that positively impact our local community, and we believe the New Holland Early Learning Center is doing just that.

As part of our collection, we are asking for donations of diapers in sizes 3, 4 and 5, as well as baby wipes (scent & dye free), tissues, washable markers and construction paper. These items will be donated to New Holland Early Learning Center, and will help ensure that they have the supplies they need to for the children to thrive.

COMMUNITY CORNER: LIGHTHOUSE VOCATIONAL SERVICES

Lighthouse Vocational Services was established in 1975 at a time when people with disabilities were often isolated at home or in institutions, without opportunities to integrate or work with other people. Businessmen from the New Holland community saw a need and an opportunity.

They founded Lighthouse on the belief that God created each person with value and purpose, and from the very beginning, participants were given dignity. The founders mobilized volunteers and renovated an old farmhouse in Blue Ball to create a place where people could find meaning and purpose. Lighthouse started with only three participants but quickly grew to over 20. Most of the participants were from Christian, Old Order Mennonite or Amish families.

Today, Lighthouse serves over 200 individuals in Lancaster, Chester and Lebanon Counties. The organization still carries the vision to help all persons meet their greatest potential. Based in a 25,000 square foot warehouse building in New Holland, Lighthouse offers participants a wide variety of in-house, community-based, and online opportunities to gain experience, explore new interests, integrate with the community and build the skills needed for lasting employment.

Get Involved: Lighthouse Vocational Services offers pop-up events in the Village Square at Garden Spot Village. These sales events offer an opportunity to support Lighthouse participants as they offer their artwork for sale. Garden Spot Village looks forward to deepening the relationship between our organizations; look for additional opportunities to partner with Lighthouse in the near future.

MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH... CELEBRATING JOHN DOUGHERTY

When John Dougherty graduated from high school in June 1943, the world was on fire. Within a month he was drafted and sent to Camp Edwards, Massachusetts. His training took him to West Virginia and Camp Pickett, Virginia before flying to California for deployment to Burma. For 62 days his ship zigzagged across the Pacific Ocean, before landing on the coast of India. His unit sailed up the Hooghly River, where they caught a train in Northern India, which took them into Burma. He served with a medical unit stationed near the Burma Road, which was built a couple of years earlier to help provide supplies to China, to help support them in their efforts to hold off the Japanese. His parents sent four sons to serve their country in World War II. All but one returned. John wears his veteran cap to honor their sacrifice; when asked, he tells their story.

John’s stories of World War II bring the history alive. He talks about the daily supply drops with red, green and white parachutes. The red parachutes meant medical supplies. The white parachutes meant food while the green parachutes brought beer. The soldiers used the chutes for everything—making bedding, tents and more from the material. When the war was over, his team waited six months to return home. They flew to Calcutta, but because of civil unrest, the soldiers needed to stay outside of the city. The USS Admiral W. S. Benson picked them up and after a quick stop in Manila to drop off cows, they returned to the United States, sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge, to San Francisco, California. After returning home, John attended Millersville University. He served his local community as a teacher, coach and athletic director for 35 years.

5 BENEFITS OF IMPROVED BALANCE

1. Pain reduction: Working on your balance goes beyond just strengthening muscles. It challenges your whole body to act as one unit, strengthening muscle groups that may not normally get a good workout. This can lead to improved posture, which can in turn lead to less back pain and a decreased risk of arthritis.

2. Improved athleticism: We’ve all seen the images of burly football players dancing in pink tutus. That’s because ballet is an excellent way to learn better balance, which is key to doing well on the field. Athletes who practice balance regularly see an improvement in their agility, quicker reaction time and overall better performance.

3. Longer life: Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury and death for older Americans? With improved balance, senior citizens can reduce their risk of a fall, which could in turn mean a longer life!

4. Reduced injury: Better balance can help people of all ages avoid injuries. Not only will it help you keep upright, it can also teach you how to fall, so that you will instinctively hit the ground in the right way so as to do the least amount of damage.

5. Accessibility: The best part of working on balance is how accessible it is! You don’t need any equipment to work on basic moves. All you need to do is find an even surface to stand on, close your eyes, and gradually lift one leg, holding for 30 seconds. Switch to the other leg and do the same. For beginners, do this to each side three times, gradually adding more reps as you get better.

Balance training involves doing exercises that strengthen the muscles that help keep you upright, including your legs and core. These kinds of exercises can improve stability and help prevent falls. Join us on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:30pm for Greg’s Balance Class, especially if you use a cane, walker or scooter, or attend Andrea’s class at 1:15pm. Classes are held in the Fitness Room.
