Continuing Education NOVEMBER FOCUS
GREGORY SCOTT: AUTHOR TALK & BOOK SIGNING Article by Mallory Lettorale, Marketing Intern.
In each century, there are a handful of individuals who define a city and make a mark on history. Written by architect and historian, Gregory J. Scott, Urban Legend tells the story of C. Emlen Urban and the architectural masterpieces which left a mark on the City of Lancaster. Throughout his career as an architect, Gregory has assured consistently innovative and empathetic design solutions by fostering a work environment of innovation and creativity resulting in numerous awardwinning projects. Many are unaware of the lifelong work of celebrated local architect Cassius Emlen Urban, who is the basis of the story. His keen eye for design transformed Lancaster’s cityscape over 100 years ago. Throughout his career, his building designs included public buildings, churches, hotels, schools, industrial facilities, and private residences. Even though he spent his entire career living in the area, his designs were influenced by knowledge of classical and historical architecture and work produced in larger cities like Philadelphia and New York. He then adapted this historical architecture style into modern building types and materials to later go on and design smaller-scale buildings, as well as the major commercial buildings, on a monumental scale. Check out the Hager Building that still stands tall in Lancaster, designed by Urban, built between 1910 and 1911 in order to appreciate his work and lasting impression in the city.

MORE THAN A THEATER: THE HEART OF SERVANT STAGE Article by Natalija Gligorevic, Marketing Intern
Theater is expensive. Average Broadway tickets have been teetering on the edge of $200 dollars in recent years, and musical enthusiasts are sick of suffering financial hits every time they want to see their favorite show. In 2011, an assembly of individuals set out to solve this problem. Servant Stage, a Lancaster County theater company, unofficially formed when a group of friends began living out their dreams by performing for local retirement communities. After officially incorporating into a non-profit organization in 2013, they shared their mission: to provide entertainment for everyone, despite their financial or physical limitations. This makes them one of the only pay-what-you-will theaters in Lancaster County. Executive Director Jonathan Bauer says, “Garden Spot Village has been a big supporter from the very beginning of Servant Stage. Our first rehearsals and performances were there in the Chapel, and we have gotten to know many of the residents very well over the past 10+ years! We have had so many memorable performances at Garden Spot Village over the years. I would estimate we have done over 75 performances! Our cast and staff love the relationships we have been able to form with the residents, and how they have invested in our lives.” Since 2013, Servant Stage has expanded impressively. Now utilizing Lancaster County Christian School in Leola as a base for office operations, Servant Stage has branched out their program to incorporate youth summer camps, original musical productions, and Broadway favorites—all of which are family-friendly for the community. Some crowd-favorite shows are: A Christmas Carol, The Civil War, and Around the World in 80 Days. Servant Stage delivers not only entertainment accessible to everyone, but also a hub for community-centered activity and service. The company presents many opportunities to get involved, either by volunteering as an usher, engaging in Monday drop-in classes, or participating in the youth summer program. For adolescents, there is a Rising Star Scholarship Award for eligible high school seniors. For children, the summer drama camps give a theater education from professionals that are just as excited about learning. Servant Stage invites Garden Spot Village and the New Holland community to their electric performance of First Look, Friday, November 17, 7pm, in the Chapel; also, don’t miss the fan-favorite production of Jingle Bell Jukebox, Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25, 7pm, in the Chapel.

Indigenous Peoples Focus – Library Additions
What are the spiritual practices of some Indigenous Peoples? Find out from Choctaw elder, spiritual medic and Episcopal priest, Steven Charleston, in his book, Ladder to the Light: An Indigenous Elder’s Meditations on Hope and Courage (2021). The book is described as one of comfort, truth and challenge in time of anguish and fear. This book is located in the religious section of the GSV library at REL/CHA.
A significant period in shaping what America is today, was the settling of the Northwest Territory, a vast wilderness area northwest of the Ohio River. David McCullough’s book, The Pioneers: The Heroic Story of the Settlers Who Brought the American Ideal West (2019), tells the story of a contentious relationship with the native people. This book is located in the history section of the library at HIS/US/McM. The GSV Cultural Awareness Team, which seeks to foster positive change, beginning with educating ourselves and the broader community, recommends these books.

W E L L N E S S
WALKING WITH THOSE WHO GRIEVE The Walking With ministry began its journey believing that everyone in grief has one basic need: someone to simply notice and acknowledge the depths of the pain. One of Garden Spot’s chaplains noticed a hesitancy in those who experienced the loss of a spouse to attend or become involved in any number of support opportunities being offered. They asked, “What could be done to encourage those newly grieving to take a step forward in the healing process?” Walking With developed into a ministry of comfort by those who have been comforted. This is an intentional effort by someone who has navigated the grieving pathway for some time to come alongside someone newly grieving. Those relationships provide an opportunity to ask questions and receive encouragement, give a safe place to learn and grow with grace, and is a means to share resources and wisdom in meeting specific grieving needs.
Lauren Graber, Director
When Ruth Ann Ware’s husband passed away, Nancy Heckman came alongside her through the Walking With ministry. Nancy could share the comfort and insight she gained from being widowed twice, as well as experiencing the death of an adult son. Both benefited from what they found in common and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share encouragement, learn and grow in their individual journeys. GSV’s Chaplaincy and Social Services most often become aware of those who would benefit from the Walking With ministry, but anyone is invited to make a recommendation. In the process, participants learn that grief is not an enemy to be avoided but a process to be embraced, while believing that everyone can continue to find comfort and hope. For more information, contact Jenny Snyder, from the Social Service Advocacy team, at 717.355.6259 or jsnyder@gardenspotvillage.org.
Sometimes that takes the form of conversation over coffee, help with some challenging task, or just enjoying some activity together. Through Social Services, both parties agree to meet when it suits them for a period of not less than three months or more than a year. Walking With does not intend to take the place of other grief support and is not a substitute for grief counseling, but seeks to helps in accepting grief and lament as a part of life.
