STOCK GIVING: A SMARTER WAY TO MAKE AN IMPACT
Are you currently writing checks to make donations but also have appreciated stocks or mutual funds in a taxable investment portfolio? If that is the case, you likely have a significant opportunity to pay less tax, give more, improve your cash flow and simplify your giving. TIP: Donating stock before the sale is critical to reducing or eliminating capital gains taxes. Speak with your professional advisors to learn more.
If you plan to make a stock transfer as a donation to Garden Spot Village’s Benevolent Fund or Cooperative Living Fund, please call Wendy Nagle, director of Mission Advancement, at 6215 for transfer directions. Share the type of stock and the number of shares you plan to transfer, and our finance department will verify the share value when the transaction is complete.

FOCUS How They Learned Their ABC’s
Leona Baker, a Garden Spot Village resident since August 2021, spent nearly eight years researching and recording 250 years of educational history in Salisbury Township. A member of the Salisbury Township Historical Society, Leona’s research included hundreds of interviews and countless hours pouring through historic documents as she pieced together the history of the public schools which were built in what is now part of Pequea Valley School District. She recently published her stories in her book, How They Learned Their ABC’s

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28
7PM, CHAPEL
Leona Baker talks about her extensive research for her recently published book focusing on the One Room Public Schools of Salisbury Township. Public invited.
A natural storyteller, Leona shares the history of education, dating back to the 1700s, when Pennsylvania was still a frontier and a British colony. In a recent interview Leona shared, “In the 1700s itinerant schoolmasters, who may or may not have had any formal teachers’ training, traveled from village to village. They would set up a room in a business and charge children $.02 a day to attend school. Many early immigrants were cash poor farmers, which made it very difficult for them to send their children to school.”
In the book, Leona also recounts how soon after the Revolutionary War, Pennsylvania’s first legislators determined one of the first laws in their newly formed Commonwealth would be related to education. The itinerant scholars needed to have formal training. By the 1830s, legislators began to establish additional education laws. In 1834 they enacted the first public education school act, which required each municipality or township to establish a school board, purchase land and erect a school. Each child needed to be within one mile of a public school. The first property taxes were established as the school boards levied taxes in order to purchase the land and build the school. She records that one-room schools started popping up across the commonwealth as each local town and municipality began to build schools. Grades one through eight were taught in the same building and the same room, often by young teachers. She picks up the history of education in Salisbury Township, sharing that despite the state law requiring schools in each municipality, by 1844, Salisbury Township still didn’t have schools available to all the children in the area. Salisbury Township remained a strong farming community and many of its citizens were cash poor, so there were still pockets of the community that didn’t meet the requirement of a school within one mile of each child. Over the next 22 years, 19 schools popped up across the municipality.
4 THE GARDEN VARIETY | A PUBLICATION OF GARDEN SPOT VILLAGE
Throughout the book, Leona shares the stories of the children, the teachers and the communities they served, as she explores the impact of education and schools in Salisbury Township. She will share some of these stories with the audience during an Author Talk on Saturday, October 28 at 7pm in the Chapel. Join her for an evening of storytelling and exploration of a nearby Lancaster County community. us for this month’s AUTHOR TALK & BOOK SIGNING

THE NEW HOLLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT provides public service with the utmost of professionalism, integrity and compassion. This is accomplished by having the highest regard for constitutional, civil and human rights of every citizen.
In 1926 Davis Warfel was appointed the first police officer by New Holland Borough with a salary of $80 per month. When he passed away in 1934, Edward Bauer took over. The police department history notes that Bauer was required to purchase his own uniforms. The town of New Holland grew significantly in the 1960s, which had an impact on the department.
In 1968, under new Chief Ralph Sprecher, the department grew from one officer to four, in addition to patrol officers. Sixty years later, its growth continues to reflect the community’s growth. The police department is currently made up of 18 officers, including 14 Patrol Officers, one Detective, one School Resource Officer, one part time Patrol Officer, and the Chief of Police. William D. Leighty (pictured above) was hired as Chief of Police in June of 2017. He expresses, I have a passion for the act of leadership and enjoy adding value to others.
Garden Spot Village enjoys a strong relationship with the local police department and partners with them in various ways including participating in National Night Out each August and hosting Drug Take Back Day each spring and fall.

Topic: Indigenous People of the Area and The Sad Story of the Conestoga Massacre
The history of one is the history of all. Before Europeans settled in Lancaster County, indigenous people flourished. Join the Cultural Literacy Committee to learn who was here and hear the unfortunate story of the Conestogas. Popular columnist, Jack Brubaker, “The Scribbler,” will give an in-depth account of the unfortunate massacre of the Conestogas in Lancaster, December 1763. Although Jack retired after a 30+ year career with Lancaster News, he has continued to receive numerous awards for his columns, investigative reporting and public service reporting. He has authored multiple books on local history, including the Massacre of the Conestogas, published in 2010. Prior to Jack’s presentation, historian and Garden Spot resident, Lou Ann Miller, Cultural Awareness Team, will give a history of the indigenous people who flourished in this area.
GOODBYE STORY SHACKS!
Story Shacks 2023 have been retired for the winter. We, the members of the Cultural Awareness Team, all feel better informed about our Indigenous ancestors across the country. We hope that many of you do as well. Our intention is to donate the newer titles to the GSV Library, and the older titles to the library sale. If there is a title you missed, check the library. An especially good day to do that would be Monday, October 9, which is Indigenous People’s Day. We can learn much from Native American cultures, religions, crafts, culinary skills and ingenuity. Please keep us in mind as you recycle books that may be connected to cultural awareness. A theme for 2024 will be announced in the New Year. Thank you to all who donated and to all who read!

MEDICARE PART D PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLANS
The Social Services team will continue the annual tradition of providing complimentary consultations for residents with Traditional Medicare who wish to review their Medicare D Prescription Drug plan during annual Open Enrollment. If you choose to change plans, we can help you complete the enrollment.
Beginning Monday, October 2, you may schedule an appointment by calling Resident Services (6000). All consultations will take place in the Chapel Parlor. Please arrive promptly and bring all your medications in their original containers along with your Medicare, health insurance, and current prescription plan cards. Please note this caution!
• Do not schedule a Medicare D appointment with Social Services if you have Rx coverage as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan or Retirement Benefit package. You will need to work through your retirement plan administrator or an insurance broker so that you do not lose valuable benefits.
• If you utilize benefits from PACE/PACENET, it is also unnecessary to schedule an appointment with Social Services. The program will automatically assign a Medicare D plan to you.
Interested in completing your own Medicare D review but need a refresher on how to use Medicare’s website? Here are a few options to help:
1. Beginning Monday, October 23, pick up a step-by-step paper guide to enrollment from the Social Services Office.
2. Watch the step-by-step “Medicare Part D Tutorial” video posted in the Video Gallery on CATIE.

LANCASTER COUNTY BEST KEPT SECRETS TOUR
Fifteen years ago Melissa Nordoff, then retail manager of Carson’s in the Cornfield located along 322 in New Holland, had a vision for drawing traffic and increasing interest in locally owned retail shops throughout Lancaster County. She reached out to her colleagues and created a “Best Kept Secrets Tour.” That first year she sold 900 packets to shoppers who wanted to “buy local.”
This initial vision evolved into three tours each year – Spring, Fall and the 12 Shops of Christmas. October 5-21, The Shops at Garden Spot Village will join nearly 40 other retailers and restaurants in participating in the Fall Lancaster County Best Kept Secrets Tour. Shoppers purchase tour tickets from participating retailers for $11. One dollar of each packet goes to Community Action Partnership in Lancaster. The first 2,000 “packets” come in a bag filled with goodies provided by participating retailers, as well as a 12-pg packet booklet with a description of each stop; a map noting a suggested route; a coupon from each stop; the calendar of events; and entry forms to win over $1000 in gift cards.
The fall 2023 tour marks the fourth time Garden Spot Village has participated in the tours. Volunteer Services Director Jodi Lefever says, “It’s always a busy time, hosting the Best Kept Secrets Tour. But we enjoy the shoppers—they visit, ready to spend money—and their purchases make a difference in our community.”
Volunteers are the reason the event is so successful at Garden Spot Village! In addition to volunteers who work in Linden, Share & Care and The Artisans Corner, volunteers greet shoppers and provide maps and information on special events on our campus.
The Best Kept Secrets Tour has become so popular that Melissa has added tours in Berks, Chester, Cumberland, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry and Schuylkill Counties in Pennsylvania, as well as New Castle County in Delaware and Cecil, Frederick/Carroll and Harford Counties in Maryland. She also markets a “Mystery Book” and a Best Consignment Store List that’s distributed to local shoppers. To purchase your $11 Best Kept Secrets Tour tickets, stop by Resident Services.
Garden Spot Village is dedicated to our local community, exemplified by our embrace of Swipe Out Hunger. Since 2017, our volunteers have generously provided over 16,200 meals, leaving a positive impact. You, too, can make a difference by converting meal plan surplus or offering donations.
Participation is easy—staff and residents can swipe their cards or contribute cash/check donations to support Swipe Out Hunger at any of our dining venues. This endeavor directs resources to our Community Meal, fostering both nourishment and community connection. Solely funded by Garden Spot Village, the Community Meal occurs every fourth Monday at the CrossNet Youth Ministries Building on Franklin Street.
Your financial assistance amplifies this noble effort, while your time, too, is treasured. Join us in this meaningful initiative. To discover how you can play a role, whether through donation or volunteering, please call 717.355.6000. Together, we create a stronger community.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS TIPS FOR THE FALL SEASON
STAYING HEALTHY THROUGHOUT THE AUTUMN SEASON TAKES A NICE COMBINATION OF WHOLESOME HABITS. BE SURE TO ADD THE FOLLOWING TIPS TO YOUR DAILY ROUTINE. Get enough vitamin D. As the days become shorter, natural light can lead to a lack of vitamin D. Try to get outside in the sunlight for 15 minutes per day.
Take a brisk walk. If you tend to be really active in summer months, the cooler fall temperatures might keep you indoors. Schedule a quick walk at lunchtime to get fresh air and a bit of exercise.
Stay hydrated. Believe it or not, feeling chilly can dehydrate you much like sweating on a hot day, as your body works hard to stay warm. Track your water intake to be sure you get enough water.
Check your calorie intake. As we naturally stay indoors, it’s easy to become less active. When we are less active, we need fewer calories. Comfort food is synonymous with cooler temps, yet these dishes can often pack in more calories. Evaluate your input and your output in order to stay on top of your weight and maintain healthy balance.
Be vigilant about handwashing. Practice this all year round!
Reschedule check-ups that you missed over the summer. Staying on top of your wellness visits and vaccines is key to staying healthy.
FALL WEATHER DOESN’T NEED TO MEAN YOU HAVE TO ACCEPT GETTING SICK. WHILE YOU MIGHT GET A COLD OR A BUG, KEEPING YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM STRONG CAN HELP YOU FIGHT IT OFF AND MAKE SURE YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE MINOR.
