2018

RUNNERS GUIDE

A Road Apple Award Race Run either our 13.1 or 26.2 and the Bird-in-Hand 1/2 marathon in the same calendar year and you will be presented with the Road Apple Award.

ENJOY THE RUN! Those of us who organize the race are runners and we know how stressful it can be to arrive and try to figure everything out, especially with the excitement of the race. We do our best to make it as stressfree as possible. Once you get on campus, there will be plenty of signs and people around to direct you. No need to worry.

Pretzel City Sports, a highly respected, well-known local timing company, is our official timer. Your bib includes a “disposable” chip. The starting line and the finish line are within a few yards of each other, so the race finishes where you start. Location: Garden Spot Village 433 S. Kinzer Avenue, New Holland, PA 17557 Telephone: 717.355.6000 Marathon Expo: Free and open to the public, Friday, April 13 from 4–7pm. To see a list of Expo vendors visit: gardenspotvillagemarathon.org/pasta-dinner-expo Packet Pick-up: Friday, April 13 from 2–8pm. When you turn onto the Garden Spot Village Campus Parking Attendants will direct you. The Pasta Dinner and Expo are in the same location as packet pick-up. Packet Pick-up the day of the event: starts at 6:30am. Parking Attendants will be available and can direct you to registration. Mens & Ladies changing tents are by the clothing/gear check. The back of your bib has a form for emergency contact information. We hope not to use it, however, as a safety precaution, please fill it out. Please pin your bib to the front of your shirt. DO NOT pin the tear off tag to your shirt and do not remove the tag. The tag serves as a backup for chip timing and may be pulled off at the finish line. Bib colors match your race: GREEN 13.1 mile 1/2 marathon (USATF Certified) BLUE 26.2 mile marathon (USATF Certified) If you switched from 26.2 to 13.1, or vice versa, after bib numbers were assigned your bib will have a piece of tape on it representing the color of the race you are running. Please do not remove it. It serves as a signal to our volunteers at the finish line so that you get the proper medal. - 4 -

The full marathon and 1/2 marathon start together promptly at 8am. Line up starts at 7:45am. Slower runners and walkers, please gravitate toward the rear. The first 5 miles of the course are closed to traffic from 8–10:30am. Shortly after you pass the 4th water stop, the rest of the course will be open to traffic. At that point PLEASE RUN TOWARD TRAFFIC KEEPING TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. Traffic cones will line the course on the left side of the road every 1/10 of a mile. Course markings (arrows) are painted white at turns, and there will also be a cone with a directional sign. Where the course overlaps, cones will be on both sides of the road. You will be running through 4 different townships and they have all been very gracious in accommodating our race. Please help support our good relationship with the townships so that we can continue to offer this opportunity to you and other runners in the future. Our farming neighbors are also very gracious. They have allowed us to set up water stations and porta potties in their fields and on their property. Please be respectful of their property.

you need assistance. They will also be picking up clothing and other items you may discard along the way. Anything we pick up is held at clothing check until after the race, and you are welcome to look for your discarded items. At mile 7 there will be a lot going on. The 1/2 marathon turnaround point is in this area, and there are typically a lot of spectators. This section of road has limited access from 8am to 10:30am, so there should be very few, if any, cars. If you have an BLUE (full marathon) bib DO NOT make a U-turn, you want to run past all the activity and continue on the marathon course. If you have a GREEN (1/2 marathon) bib, you will make a U-Turn when you reach the “energetic cow” (see below) in the center of the road. The 1/2 marathon turnaround point will be well-marked, and volunteers will be there to direct you.

SAG vehicles will be continually monitoring the course. They will have cell phones and radios if Garden Spot Village Marathon & Half Marathon 2018 Runners Guide

WATER STATIONS There are water stations and porta potties every 2 miles. As you approach the water stations, volunteers will be handing out orange Gatorade first, followed by water. There will be banana quarters and salty pretzel fish at every water station. Please take only what you need. There are minor first-aid supplies like band-aids and Vaseline. Just ask. Water Station Partners:

AWARD CEREMONIES 1/2 Marathon – 11am in the Legacy Garden Marathon – 12:30pm in the Legacy Garden We do our best to honor these times. We ask your patience if the ceremonies start a few minutes late. Ensuring accurate results is a top priority and requires a significant amount of verification.

Runner Recovery Following the race, the Recovery Tent will be a large 60 x 60 foot tent just beyond the end of the finisher chute. You need a runner’s bib to enter. Runners are also welcome to food and drink items at the concession stand; please pay for concession food that is for family or friends. The showers and hot tub are inside at our Wellness Center; just ask a volunteer to point you in the right direction. Massages are being provided by Morphysique, and will be adjacent to the Recovery Tent. Complimentary massages are available to all runners until 2:30pm. For spectators, friends and family members, the concession stand will have food and drinks for purchase. - 6 -

The Garden Spot Village Marathon Story Approaching age 50, the Garden Spot Village marketing director decided to run a marathon. He trained for 2 years and it became a topic of conversation. Residents and staff repeatedly offered to pray for him & his mental health, suggesting you’d have to be a little crazy to run 26.2 miles! He finished a fall marathon in 5:54:54. Having trained, he looked for a nearby spring marathon but found none. After humorously suggesting GSV host a marathon, he was surprised when the leadership team said, “go ahead.” It’s been a blessing beyond compare because it brings thousands of people like you here! Look around and you’ll see an energetic community where people with a thirst for life find purpose and opportunity! The excitement of the marathon exemplifies the Garden Spot Experience! Come for the lifestyle, stay for the friends. Learn more at gardenspotvillage.org.

Finish Line When you cross the finish line, your timing chip is automatically read and your time recorded. The tag on the front of your bib may be pulled as a backup. Please be sure that your bib is fully exposed as you cross the finish line. If it is covered in any way, e.g. under a jacket or pinned to a pant leg and a shirt is tied around your waist covering it, it may not be read properly and your time may not be recorded. Please be sure your bib is clearly visible. You will get your finishers medal as you cross the finish line. There will be bottles of water in the chute and there will be silver mylar blankets at the end of the chute if you want one. The Recovery Tent with food, liquids and tables and chairs to sit down will be to your left. There is a photo wall at the entry. You need to be wearing your runner’s bib to enter the Recovery Tent. We switch to manual timing at 2pm but the finish line remains open until 4pm. Your bib tag will be scanned and removed. Your official time will be sent to Pretzel City Sports after the event. It may take a couple of days for your time to be posted online. There will be water and food available until 4pm.

Medical Tent, Ambulance & Emergency Fees As the waiver you signed indicates, we expect that you have trained for the race and that you are healthy. There is a medical tent. We hope you don’t need it, but if you do, please ask one of the volunteers in the chute for help and they will get you to the tent. Once there, your condition will be assessed and help provided. There is no charge for a visit to the medical tent. If in the unfortunate circumstance you need to go to the hospital there will be an ambulance onsite. If you use the ambulance, there is an ambulance fee that you are responsible for and either you or your insurance company will be billed. You will be asked which hospital you wish to visit. Wellspan, in Ephrata, is supporting the event and is closest. Alternatives are Lancaster General and Reading Hospitals.

Shirts, Runner’s Bag, Medal

You get two shirts this year: a tech shirt to run in and a t-shirt to run around in. You also get a water resistant adventure duffle bag. For those who registered before March 1, 2018, we ordered the shirt you specified and you can pick them up before the race when you get your bib. Please take the size shirt that you ordered. We cannot exchange sizes before the race. If you registered on or after March 1, 2018, you can pick up your shirt after you finish. Shirts are on a first come, first serve basis. We ordered extra shirts and there should be plenty. We ask for your understanding if your shirt size is not available; we had to use guesswork when we placed the order. You will be presented with your finishers medal and hat in the chute when you cross the finish line. The Marathon and 1/2 Marathon medals look the same; however, they say Marathon or 1/2 Marathon depending upon which race you ran. The neck ribbon for the Marathon medal is blue and the neck ribbon for the 1/2 Marathon is green. There are plenty of medals. Please make sure you have the correct medal before you leave the campus.

Volunteers In consideration of their time and the long hours for the day, we release our volunteers at 2pm. However, we keep the finish line open until 4pm. We monitor the course and close the water stations as our final finisher passes them. There will be Gatorade, water and food but there may or may not be volunteers at the water stations. We have wonderful volunteers! Please be courteous and thank them for their service. As runners, we all know that there wouldn’t be events like this without the volunteers.
