Beginning at 11:30am, Concord Room, complimentary lunch served Proactive strategic planning is the key to reducing taxes while achieving your individual and family philanthropic goals. The tax code is complex and seemingly ever changing, but there are opportunities to give tax-efficiently. Often individuals put much thought into how much they are giving to charity but fail to consider how they are doing their giving. Without a plan, they often miss tax benefits and are likely to pay more taxes than needed.

There are strategies that could lessen your tax burden and maximize your charitable giving. Chris Hershey, CFP®, lead financial adviser for Rodgers & Associates, will share several of these giving strategies that could provide current or future tax benefits. This planning could allow you to give more to the charities that support the causes closest to your heart.

SEPTEMBER FOCUS Lanchester Landfill: What & Where

A Brief History of Waste Management, by Commercial Zone Products, states that landfills date to 3000 B.C. In what is now modern-day Greece, people used to dig large holes to dump refuse. In 2000 B.C., China used simple composting and recycling methods. Today, there are over 1,250 landfill facilities in the United States. The Lanchester Landfill, located on a 600-acre property, is located in nearby Narvon. In September 1984, a company called the Chester County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA), which Chester County Commissioners established in August 1984, became the owner and operator of the Lanchester Landfill. The CCSWA currently employs 30 full-time operating, administrative, and management employees. CCSWA is managed by volunteers from Chester County and Lancaster County. In 2022, the landfill changed its name to Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center (LLARC).

Here are a few quick facts about the LLARC:

• The landfill services 49 Chester County communities, which is about 450,000 residents and hundreds of businesses.

• Lanchester accepts an average of 800 tons/day of non-hazardous municipal refuse and residuals

• Lanchester won the Wildlife Habitat Council’s 2015 Corporate Lands for Learning Rookie of the Year Award.

• The Authority will continue the past practice of using goats and sheep as natural, low-cost weed and grass control.

• The Authority offers tours, interactive and age-appropriate educational presentations, as well as composting classes.

• The landfill’s pipeline—a renewable energy source—provides natural gas to local businesses. The gas consists of 50% methane, 45% carbon dioxide, and small amounts of nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen.

COMMUNITY CORNER

BARNSTORMERS: THE 2023 SEASON

Famous Australian opera singer,

once said, “The first rule in opera is the first rule in life: see to everything yourself.” Since the pandemic, singers in general, and definitely opera singers, are in high demand. Opera is a type of musical art. It was born in Italy over 400 years ago, in 1607, during the Renaissance.

In 2016, Scott Drackley started Penn Square Opera to give singers, at the beginning of their careers, an opportunity to learn, grow, perform and make connections in the opera world. Penn Square Opera has two goals in mind when it comes to its artists and their company. First, to provide professional performance and training to talented artists at the beginning of their careers. Second, to bring professional performances of opera and musical theatre to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Lancaster is known as a tourist destination and was dubbed “The New Brooklyn” by New York Post. Lancaster has a thriving arts community from visual to dramatic to musical arts. Scott has worked to help facilitate that thriving community. He has made music, especially opera, his career for 40 years. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Lebanon Valley College and a Master of Music in Vocal Accompanying and Coaching from The Catholic University of America. Over the years, Scott has directed many operas, from Falstaff to The Pirates of Penzance. He has also directed music theater ranging from Anything Goes to Oklahoma.

On September 18, Scott will present at Towne Meeting, where he will discuss Penn Square Opera and Garden Spot’s partnership with the non-profit organization.

Garden Spot Village has collaborated with Lancaster County retirement communities in reserving special Clipper Stadium skybox seats. Enjoy air conditioning or outdoor seating with a perfect view. Food vendors are located nearby to purchase your ballpark munchies. Limited seating.

GSV Resident and Pastor, David Stambovsky’s ancestors were persecuted orthodox Ashkenazi Jews from Russia/Eastern Europe who immigrated to the United States in 1908. Pastor David will share a personal story of the parchment’s history and sing the memorized book of Esther followed by a short question and response time. TRIP TO NEW YORK SCHOOL OF URBAN MINISTRY

Founded in 1984, the New York School of Urban Ministry (NYSUM) has hosted, trained and deployed over 150,000 youth and adults for urban ministry by partnering with inner city pastors, churches and ministries in New York City. GSV residents John & Irene Smucker were founding partners and remain connected to NYSUM today. Our initial trip last year to NYSUM resulted in building relationships with NYSUM staff and an invitation for a return trip. From October 22-26, Garden Spot Village will sponsor a group of residents and staff traveling to NYSUM for a week of outreach. Opportunities will include light construction work at the center, assisting with the food truck ministry to homeless persons in the evenings, visiting the Brooklyn Tabernacle prayer/worship service on Tuesday evening, and sitting in on a class related to urban missions. A $50.00 donation per participant is requested and will cover the cost of transportation, room and board at the NYSUM center.

VOLUNTEER SERVICES Jodi Lefever,

APPRECIATION ALL YEAR LONG

“No one is more cherished in this world than someone who lightens the burden of another.” – Joseph Addison

In Volunteer Services, we are thankful for the 475 people who volunteer more than a combined 43,000 hours in total each year. Their impact on our community is profound. Time and again, we have found that people who work together toward a common goal forge deeper relationships.

Volunteers tell us the friendships they have made as they have folded laundry, picked lettuce in the greenhouse, waited on customers in Linden and Share & Care, served the Community Meal at CrossNet Ministries, answered telephones at Resident Services and how it has helped them connect to their neighbors in powerful ways.

Even future residents embrace the opportunity to volunteer and make a difference at Garden Spot Village. They report that the time volunteering has helped them to build friendships in their future community.

Plus – volunteering makes you feel good!

In the past, we have held volunteer appreciation events annually. Moving forward, we would like to appreciate volunteers on an ongoing basis. Regular thanks and words of encouragement go a long way! We invite you to join us – thank your neighbors and your friends for their volunteer work on behalf of our community.

If you volunteer, we strongly encourage you to officially record your hours with Volunteer Services. Annually, we host an appreciation event and only volunteers who record official hours receive an invitation to those events.

To learn more about building your community through volunteering, call Jodi Lefever, Volunteer Services Director at 717.355.6204.

Garden Spot Village is dedicated to our local community, exemplified by our embrace of Swipe Out Hunger. Since 2017, our volunteers have generously provided over 16,200 meals, leaving a positive impact. You, too, can make a difference by converting meal plan surplus or offering donations.

Participation is easy—staff and residents can swipe their cards or contribute cash/check donations to support Swipe Out Hunger at any of our dining venues. This endeavor directs resources to our Community Meal, fostering both nourishment and community connection. Solely funded by Garden Spot Village, the Community Meal occurs every fourth Monday at the CrossNet Youth Ministries Building on Franklin Street.

Your financial assistance amplifies this noble effort, while your time, too, is treasured. Join us in this meaningful initiative. To discover how you can play a role, whether through donation or volunteering, please call 717.355.6000. Together, we create a stronger community.

STRENGTH TRAINING IS KEY

to maintaining mobility, balance, and range of motion as you get older. Here’s what you need to know, and how to get started. Strength training offers more benefits than just keeping your muscles strong. It can help you maintain balance and mobility as you age, and even help minimize your risk for certain diseases. Strength training may sound intimidating if you’re new to this kind of workout. But beginning a routine is easier than you might think. Strength training builds muscle, which can make everyday activities easier.

Health

benefits of strength training for older adults:

Strength training offers major health advantages for your whole body. Some of these perks are especially beneficial for older adults. Take a look at just a few reasons to add strength moves to your workout regimen.

• Build everyday strength

• Strengthen bones

• Lower risk of falls

• Reduce risk for certain diseases

• Help control blood sugar

• Help weight loss

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends strength training at least twice weekly for health benefits. Two strength workouts per week should be enough if you’re active on the other days. Great activities include gardening, hiking, walking, swimming, and sports like golf and pickleball.

FALL BRINGS QUESTIONS ABOUT FLU VACCINES

In the news recently, it was mentioned that the flu vaccines will be sent out early, but this does not mean you need to get your shot early. Flu season starts at the end of November and runs through March. If you get your flu shot too early, it will not keep you protected throughout the season.
