Hello all,

Welcome to our 17th annual fall sale! As we look at the world today with many distractions, challenges and opportunities, the thought of control what you can comes to mind. We have had a disciplined approach to genetic selection since Henry Gardiner made the decision to implement total A.I. without the use of clean-up bulls in 1964. This strategy, while often called “boring” by others, has worked well to create cattle that have a greater chance at profitability across all beef production sectors.

Selection pressure for calving ease, early growth, end product merit, and maternal function is a very simple, yet effective, approach to the business of beef. Our success in implementing this strategy is due to the fact that these traits are heritable, and our information systems, since 1980, have been very accurate (my goodness that was 41 years ago, I must be maturing!). We are thankful for these database systems from the American Angus Association and Method Genetics.

I have never been more sure of which cattle we need to multiply to add more value per animal. When we look at the return per head of $108.54 above the base price for the USPB grid on 11,756 head of fed cattle the past four years, we are excited about what these genetics are able to accomplish for our industry, customers and consumers alike. These cattle achieved a 98.5% Choice grade and 28.67% Prime grade. Henry said in 1999 that in the next couple of decades we would design cattle that would reach Certified Angus Beef® and Prime at the level we were reaching Choice at the time. As usual, Dad was correct.

We look at the $7.59/cwt these cattle achieved as a genetic hedge. Regardless of the market conditions we have in the industry—markets go up, markets go down—this value has made a difference. Remember that we are able to stack these same genetics into our cowherd too. The females that raise your calves, and ours, are more valuable when the traits of significance are chosen.

I am totally convinced that the next ten years in the meat protein industry will be better than the previous decade. Remember, the world currently has 7.8 billion people, this population is projected to grow to nearly 10 billion by 2050. As Henry Gardiner stated in 1999, “with the quality beef we are raising today, we will turn vegans into beef eating aficionados!” Henry would be pleased to know that today, even with aggressive competition from alternative, plant-based meat substitutes, 84% of self proclaimed vegetarians return to eating meat. Only one in five maintain a vegetarian diet. It is my belief that meat eaters will accept no substitute for taste, tenderness, nutrition, value and health.

The 2021 Fall Bulls That Sell

We have chosen 410 13- to 22-month-old bulls as the offering for the 16th Annual Fall Bull Sale.

It is not surprising, however, the four largest progeny groups in the sale are all sired by four of our most trusted herd sires: GAR Ashland (53 sons); GAR Combustion (50 sons); GAR Phoenix (48 sons) and GAR Quantum (41 sons).

As a group, these sale bulls were designed to “leave no money on the table.” This means we intend to offer bulls to our customers that capture all the added value available when the cattle are fed and sold on a quality-based grid that rewards cattle for grading Choice or better, thereby, making them eligible for Certified Angus Beef (CAB), or marketing as Prime carcasses.

Check out the average EPD and index values below. Note that the average bull in this sale has a $G index of +$81, ranking the group average in the Top 2% of the Angus breed. Grid Value ($G) is the index predicting profitability of cattle marketed on a carcass grid. Traits that improve the $G index are carcass weight, marbling, ribeye area, and fat. These bulls excel in those traits. Hence, we expect their calves to achieve the maximum return on your investment.

The difference makers between the value of cattle with Gardiner genetics and the base market value are growth and marbling. These bulls have both.

commercial cattle to compare indexes of our sale bulls directly to the index values in their own herds. Hence, this provides our customers with a unique “tie” to the commercial industry that is not offered by the use of AAA genetic predictions.

The Retained Ownership Index (ROI) is the best index we can offer our customers for evaluating bulls. ROI provides a complete production system approach – it incorporates traits from conception through carcass end-points. Unlike other indexes, ROI combines maternal, growth and carcass quality endpoints into one comprehensive index. This makes it the most useful index for selecting bulls to sire replacement females or offspring headed for the feedlot and processing plant.

The average ROI of bulls offered on September 27th is in the Top 8% of the unique population of cattle, which includes GAR genetics and genetics from GAR customer herds. All the cattle in the database have been extensively selected for calving-ease, reproduction, post-weaning gain and end-product merit. Simply put, ROI benchmarks our cattle against a population of cattle that does “what we do best.” We encourage you to use ROI as one of your primary selection tools.

REVENUE SHARING AND SEMEN INTEREST

You will notice we are selling revenue sharing and semen interests on all bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we are reserving the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull if, at some time in the future, semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Gardiner Angus Ranch retains the semen interest.

It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason we keep a semen interest in all bulls sold in our production sale.

Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.

If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Gardiner Angus Ranch may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointly-owned semen bank for sale purposes.

If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, GAR has the right to collect the bull, at their own expense, for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

Gardiner Angus Ranch offers its customers free delivery anywhere in the lower 48 states. As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. GAR will do everything possible to deliver your cattle to a point that is convenient for both you and the trucking company. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a central location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. We also encourage the drivers to be as flexible as possible and request that they not deliver your cattle in the middle of the night if avoidable. We are pleased to offer 71 registered Angus females in our 17th Annual Fall Sale. Our spring season has become too busy! Therefore, we have decided to sell ALL registered cows and heifers scheduled to calve next spring. These are NOT a bunch of “unwanted” cows and heifers. Instead, they represent the “most current” genetics at GAR.

We will start the sale with a special Donor opportunity. G A R Prophet 2685 the dam of G A R Transcendent will sell. We are selling this breed changing cow for our friend Darrell Lyons of Oklahoma. All normal GAR guarantees are in place for this tremendous investment opportunity female. You will be able to make significant progress with 2685 as she has averaged 11 viable embryos per collection. Daughters of Ashland, SydGen Enhance, Quantum, Sunbeam and Mill Brae Identified make up the majority of the females that sell. Bred heifers will sell individually (47 head). The 23 young cows (2- to 4-yrolds) will sell individually. Check out the description of these cows and heifers along with their average EPDs and index values. Gardiner Angus Ranch initiated a structured internship program in 2012. The program is designed for rising junior or senior students, with an interest in animal genetics, animal nutrition, animal health, reproductive management and/or marketing of purebred cattle. Interns are given responsibilities and become members of the GAR team from Day 1. In an effort to provide maximum experiences, both spring and fall internships are offered. Spring interns arrive in early January and work through the “Meating Demand” Sale in mid-May.

Spring interns gain experience in heat detection, record keeping, AI and ET breeding and management protocols, cattle feeding, freeze branding, sale catalog preparation, ultrasound for pregnancy and fetal sex determination, cattle handling and many day-to-day ranch tasks.

Serena Schotanus is a Henry Gardiner 2021-2022 scholarship winner as well as joining the GAR team this summer for an internship. Serena has been accepted into the K-State College of Veterinary Medicine Early Admissions Program. Upon graduation, the native Californian plans to return to California to practice.

Karlee Jones is a senior at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. She grew up working on her family’s hog and cattle operation. Karlee expressed an interest in gaining more hands-on experience working on a large, diversified beef operation. She plans to enter vet school after graduation.

Fall interns arrive in late August and extend to Thanksgiving. Fall interns arrive during our extensive fall calving season and planning for the Fall Sale. These student interns gain experience in cattle gathering, processing calves, embryo collection, AI and ET and ultrasound.

GAR interns are challenged intellectually and physically to embrace the rigors of a large, diverse ranching operation and use the opportunity to enhance their personal and professional experiences. To date, 49 interns have added GAR internships to their educational experiences.

Words can’t adequately describe our appreciation for the hard work and loyalty of our small but mighty staff. Each staff member accomplishes the work of multiple people, all in an effort to get the job done. Whether it’s planting, harvesting, working several thousand head of cattle multiple times a year, breeding, feeding, processing, calving, repairing equipment—there is NO job this crew can’t do. While we all appreciate our educations, life lessons of hard work, honesty, responsibility and integrity are learned outside the classroom.

Jeff Golden began with GAR as a student at K-State. Following graduation in 1984, Jeff began working full time. Jeff’s main responsibilities include managing herd health as well as overseeing calving of the two year old heifers, and freeze branding thousands of GAR cattle each year. Jeff is as good of cowboy as we know. His ability to see the condition of the cattle and the country is valuable to us. Jeff and his wife, Sheryl, have two children, Zane and Grace. Jeff and his family live just east of GAR on their own operation.

Scott Tune has been with GAR since June, 2002. Prior to joining the GAR team, Scott worked for Bar Six Dirt Construction. Scott’s oversees much of our farming during the summer. During the winter, Scott is an ace heat checker and assists in herd health at the GAR AI barn. Scott has delivered many GAR cattle all over the U.S. He does it proficiently and with a smile. Scott and his wife, Connie, live on the Gabbert Ranch at GAR.

Eric Campbell came to GAR in August, 2004, with extensive feedlot and ranch experience. Eric assists with heat detecting and winter feeding at the AI barn. During the summer, Eric also shares much of the farming responsibilities. Eric never met a job that was too big or too small and has a great attitude! Eric and his wife, Emilie, have two children, Mahala and Mykelti, and live on the Dunne Ranch.

Kurt Borgelt, native Nebraskan, moved to Clark County in 2004. Kurt has a degree in Animal Science from Univ. of Nebraska and is an all-around good hand in the GAR operation. Whether it’s heat detection, feed bunk management or herd heath, Kurt knows cattle! Kurt’s excellent feed bunk management has enabled GAR to consolidate bull development back on the ranch. Kurt and his wife, Aimee, have three children, Austin, Nicole and Landon, and reside just east of the GAR AI barn. Landon Borgelt grew up on Gardiner Angus Ranch and is the son of Kurt and Aimee Borgelt. Landon graduated from Ashland High School and attended Pratt Community College. Landon is keenly aware of the demands of our diverse ranching and farming operation. He assists in our minimum till farming operation and is responsible for much of the equipment maintenance. During fall calving, he assist in tattooing and data collection. We are grateful Landon decided to return to the Ashland community and Gardiner Angus Ranch.

Yet, when it comes to the cow herd and replacement heifer choices or selection strategies, the access to commercial genetic selection tools aligned with your goals and in the language of our industry (EPDs, indexes) is limited.

Method Genetics® results may just be what you need. What is the goal of Method Genetics?

How do I begin participating in Method Genetics?

Most producers begin by collecting DNA samples for genotyping. Blood cards and tissue sampling units are acceptable. There are no enrollment fees. Many producers have historical data from their herds (weaning weights, carcass data) that they have not ever really been able to fully utilize to aide in selection for their herds. This information can also

be incorporated into the genetic evaluation to give producers even more informative selection tools.

How are Method indexes (MPI, QPI, and ROI) computed?

Your genotyping results on tested animals go through our complete genetic evaluation that generates key Method Genetics EPDs and indexes. Method has a database of performance trait records, pedigrees, and DNA genotypes used in a single-step genetic evaluation to derive EPDs for use in the Method indexes. Method does not use breed organization EPDs are part of this process. Because of what we know about EPDs and their derivation, Method results are comparable to other Method results, but they are not comparable to breed organization EPDs.

Can this testing identify parentage?

Method Genetics has a large database of AI and natural service sires for use in sire assignment. Participants with tested females on file have the opportunity to generate pedigrees from this parentage benefit, adding increase accuracy to their Method results. Parentage work is included in the Method DNA testing at no cost.

What details are needed on commercial Angus samples for DNA testing?

Samples are sent directly to Method Genetics personnel. The minimum inputs needed for commercial cattle DNA samples are a unique herd ID, approximate age, and gender for each sample. We can incorporate any pedigree you know, also.

What is Method ROI that I keep hearing about and seeing in catalogs?

Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point would typically use the Retained Ownership Income (ROI) index as a tool. ROI ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality-based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and it consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.

What results are received after testing is completed?

Most producers receive the Method EPDs for calving ease, carcass traits, and docility. Of primary interest are the three Method Genetic index (MPI, QPI, ROI) solutions that accompany the EPDs. Results are returned in a sortable spreadsheet for use at the operation in breeding, selection and culling decisions.

How do my Method results compare to cow herds with similar goals?

Method customers receive summary statistics to compare their herd results to a database of similar commercial cow herds with goals focused on maternal and retained ownership traits for a high-quality carcass product. This benchmark data helps Method customers characterize and understand where their current herd’s genetic level is and provides specific selection direction to reach goals for consistent, high-quality production of USDA Prime and Premium Choice product.

Method has seedstock participants using the Method Prime test and they receive more detailed EPDs and percentiles based upon the Method Genetic population. They have made a commitment to their customers using the Method Genetics system by testing and providing the Method indexes on the bulls they offer. The bulls they sell provide a great opportunity as they have Method EPDs and indexes which are comparable to other Method Genetics-generated solutions, regardless of the testing points.

How do I choose a level of testing at Method?

Most commercial Angus herds go with the Method Choice ($34). Method Prime runs $45 as of today and is used mostly by seedstock participants.

What age do I pull DNA samples on my animals?

DNA samples can be collected at any age. Advanced customers in the Method system have begun to use tissue sampling units on calves after birth. We encourage customers to conservatively approach testing and focus on the newest generations of their cattle.

I am already testing with Method Genetics, so how can I learn more about my cattle?

If details are provided from the customer, we use existing pedigree information (for example on registered Angus bulls owned or AI sires being used or females of known genetics) to fill in relationship gaps, as well as incorporating this pedigree information into the genetic evaluation tools created. From a performance record standpoint, we can also incorporate these data (contemporary group weaning weights for example) into a genetic evaluation and key EPDs and index values include this information.

Do Method Genetics results ever change?

We continue to add performance records, pedigree, and genotypes to the Method genetic evaluation. An EPD is a prediction of an animal’s true genetic merit that has an associated possible change, or standard error of prediction. EPDs are not static values and can change as more is information is incorporated into the system from one evaluation to the next. Customers actively participating in the Method Genetics program can request cow herd updates as needed to better prepare for bull selection and breeding herd management.

The predominance of alternative marketing agreements (AMA) in 2020 meant that the Big 4 packers – Tyson, Cargill, JBS and National Beef – had much of their slaughter needs filled well in advance, reducing their interest in offering cash bids. Meanwhile, demand for beef spiked higher creating historic windfall profits for packers. Many independent cattle feeders were squeezed for months, with some unable to secure bids on cattle weeks after their finished date.

“Perhaps no relationship is currently more relevant than the relationship of fed cattle inventory to processor capacity,” Kansas State livestock economist Glynn Tonsor told members of the Senate Ag Committee at a hearing on cattle markets in June.

While USDA weekly slaughter data suggested packers were struggling to keep operating during the pandemic’s early months, many cattlemen saw a broken market with packers wielding too much leverage. That chorus grew loud enough to catch the attention of influential farm-state lawmakers. The disparity between wholesale beef prices and live cattle prices hurts both cattlemen and consumers, according to South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds. He called on his colleagues in Congress to join in signing a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice seeking protection for consumers and cattlemen from what he called “anticompetitive practices in the beef processing market.” In a tweet, Rounds said “independent cattle producers are going broke despite the high demand for their product.”

Other Senators offered a legislative fix. Nebraska Sen. Deb Fischer and Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden say their Cattle Market Transparency Act of 2021 will “help facilitate price discovery.” A key provision would establish regional mandatory minimum thresholds of negotiated cash and negotiated grid trades to enable price discovery. It would also mandate packers report the number of cattle targeted for delivery to their plants 14 days prior.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley and Montana Sen. Jon Tester reintroduced legislation that would require a minimum 50% of a meat packer’s weekly volume be purchased on the open or spot market. Often referred to as the “50/14” bill because it requires the cattle be delivered within 14 days, they said the bill is designed to “foster efficient markets while increasing competition and transparency among meat packers who purchase livestock directly from independent producers.”

Proponents of the two bills say new regulations are needed to help restore “balance” to cattle markets while “increasing competition and transparency” among meat packers.

At June’s Senate Ag Committee hearing, U.S. Cattlemen’s Association vice president Justin Tupper from South Dakota testified his group views the 85% market share control of the Big 4 packers as an “oligopoly,” with only two ways to level the playing field.

“We can either work to eliminate the occurrence of anti-competitive practices and market manipulation in the meatpacking sector, or, as we’ve seen done in the past in other industries, we can break them up so they cannot have as much influence or ownership of the market.”

Breaking up the Big 4, however, is unlikely the fix cattlemen seek. Tonsor told the committee the large packers benefit from efficiencies that would be lost if their size was reduced.

Quest for Quality

A generation ago the beef industry was in peril. A landmark research project called the 1991 National Beef Quality Audit provided some ugly facts for cattlemen. Beef was losing market share fast and consumers were turned off by the fact “one out of every four beef eating experiences was unsatisfactory.” Former American Hereford Association executive Hop Dickinson accurately summed up that 1991 study, “Cattle are too big, too fat and too inconsistent.” Industry leaders knew it was either the beginning of the end for beef, or the beginning of a revolution. Indeed, by the end of the 1990s, beef had made a remarkable turn-around.

“From 1980 to 1994, we saw a 12-pound drop in per capita beef consumption,” says Randy Blach, President and CEO of CattleFax. Even with declining supplies, cattle prices traded in a $20 per cwt. range throughout that time period because, he says, “We weren’t doing a good job of

putting a product in front of consumers that they really enjoyed, and they were voting with their pocketbook. And this was the vote we were getting.”

The mid-1990s, however, saw many producers begin to embrace the concept of value-based marketing. They became intent on improving the quality of their cattle and they wanted to be paid for doing so. Preconditioning and weaning of calves before sale gained popularity. Many niche markets emerged such as natural and non-hormone treated cattle (NHTC).

As a logical next step, Blach says, producers began to see value generated when cattle were sold on a grid or formula basis. A higher trending Choice-Select spread during the late 1990s and early 2000s, he says, was the economic signal for producers to strive for quality.

Fast-forward to 2020 and grid and formula arrangements, or AMAs, composed 64% of fed cattle marketings. USDA data say 23% of cattle sales were negotiated cash, with 5% negotiated grids and forward/basis contracts at 8%. Critics of AMAs often call them “turn-in cattle,” but producers using them are finding average premiums of about $31 per head. Producers using AMAs to gain value for higher quality cattle wonder why the industry would want to revert back to a predominantly negotiated cash market where the price was one-size-fits-all?

“Value-based marketing has demonstrated the ability to transition or transform an entire industry,” says Certified Angus Beef CEO John Stika. For instance, the CAB brand needed 5.5 million head of cattle last year to meet the growing demand in the U.S. and 51 foreign countries. Stika said in 2020 the brand sold “1.2 billion pounds which translates into $92 million in premiums that flowed directly back into the hands of cow-calf and feedlot operators.”

Consumer demand for higher-quality beef is evident by comparing CAB with Select, Stika says. In 2006, for instance, CAB represented just 6.5% of the annual fed cat-

tle harvest while Select stood at 37.5%. By 2020 CAB had grown to 22.0% of the fed cattle harvest while Select had declined to 14.4%.

“Producers don’t make that change by accident,” Stika says. “It’s intentional, because of the economic signals that we’ve seen in the industry.”

During his remarks to the Senate Ag Committee in June, Gardiner Angus Ranch CEO Mark Gardiner said beef’s quality shift over the last quarter-century has been driven by the premiums producers earn through value-based marketing.

“The smallest producers have reaped the highest dollar per head value on value-based grids,” Gardiner said. Solutions such as AMAs benefits producers, and he urged the Committee, “Please do not create regulations and legislation that have the unintended consequence of harming value-based marketing. Doing so would undo many years of progress for producers such as my family and those of our customers.”

A world without Carcass Ultrasound Data

The American Angus Association and Angus breeders have a long-honored history with the use of carcass ultrasound data to drive the genetic improvement in meat quality traits. In 1998, the collection of real-time ultrasound images began through a research agreement with Iowa State University and the Association. Through this project nearly 100,000 carcass ultrasound scans on yearling bulls, heifers and steers were collected. In 2001, a set of carcass ultrasound expected progeny differences (EPDs) including percent intramuscular fat (%IMF), ribeye area, fat thickness, rump fat and percent retail product were released. These EPDs were in addition to the Carcass EPDs already being published. Carcass ultrasound EPDs allowed members who did not have access to real-kill data to begin collecting carcass quality attributes on their breeding stock. It enabled earlier prediction for traits affecting meat quality and opened the door for the inclusion of thousands of animals for meat quality selection.

The Association reported both EPD sets until 2007. At this time, Association staff took the step to combine all records into a single evaluation resulting in one set of meat quality EPDs. Today, these EPDs, including carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE), fat thickness (FAT) and marbling (MARB), are still published in Angus’s weekly genetic evaluation. Over the decades, Angus members and users of registered Angus genetics have seen considerable genetic progress. Figure 1 depicts the genetic trend for Marb EPD and subsequent phenotypes. Carcass (kill) data recording has been significant with nearly 129,000 carcass records now being included in the weekly genetic evaluation. But the number of carcass ultrasound records collected has been far greater. Since the mid 1990’s Angus breeders have submitted ~2.5 million

With the advent of genomics, a question often asked by breeders surrounds the need to continue to collect carcass ultrasound records, or if the data can be replaced by the genomics. The AGI team was keen to gain a more insight on what a world without carcass ultrasound data would look like.

A world without performance data

To do this, the team turned back time and eliminated carcass ultrasound records submitted from 2010 to present day. This eliminated over 4 million records from the carcass evaluation. The truncated evaluation was performed side-by-side with Angus’s weekly genetic evaluation, which includes the full data set, to determine how the missing data affected EPD accuracy and genetic trend. Analyses focused on two groups, “Proven Sires” and “Young Sires”. Proven Sires (n=174) were described as males born 2010 or later who were included in the Top 500 most recorded sires for carcass ultrasound progeny. They represented ~211,000 carcass ultrasound and ~4,800 carcass progeny records. Young Sires (n=4,479) were genotyped and born after 2017. This group represented 176 carcass progeny records in total and had no individual ultrasound measurements or progeny data included in the analysis.

the entire population was evaluated for changes in genetic trend. If both were negatively impacted, then the question of “Is genomic testing enough?” would have a clearer answer.

Figures 2 and 3 depict the average differences in carcass EPD accuracy with and without the removal of carcass ultrasound information. As one would expect, EPD accuracy among both groups decreased with ultrasound phenotypes removed. Proven Sires experienced an average EPD accuracy decrease of 14% across all traits. Young Sires saw an even larger average accuracy decrease of 17%, dropping average EPD accuracies below 0.35 for all traits.

In a world where Angus breeders strive to make progress every day, lower EPD accuracies have negative consequences. One consequence is slower genetic improvement. This slowed improvement is depicted in Figure 4. It outlines the genetic trend of Marbling EPD by birth year. As records are removed, the gap between the full and truncated trends widen. Without ultrasound information informing the evaluation, the marbling trend slowed. A similar trend was seen across all carcass traits.

It’s important

Elimination of the last 10 years’ worth of data has impacts on both EPD accuracy and genetic progress, re-confirming beliefs that carcass ultrasound data is important. It also promotes the necessity to continue to collect this information to facilitate the most genetic change possible. While this analysis solely focused on carcass ultrasound data, a similar investigation could be done with other traits. In those instances, there is no doubt results like these would be witnessed. Remember, genomic testing is like a credit card, and actual phenotypes (performance data) are like cash. Members can pay for goods up front with a credit card but at the end of the month they must pay their bill off with cash. If they don’t, the credit card loses its value. The same is true with the genetic evaluation. Members can pay for up front EPD accuracy with genomics, but if they don’t pay off their genetic evaluation bill with phenotypes, genomics lose their value and worse yet so does the entire genetic evaluation.

Note from Gardiner Angus Ranch: Since the first Sire Evaluation Report was published by the American Angus Association, Gardiner Angus Ranch has made consistent

progress due to the diligent submission of ultrasound carcass data from our registered herd and actual carcass records from our harvested cattle. To date, 29,062 carcass records have been submitted representing the main sires in the Sire Summary. Gardiner Angus Ranch has submitted 13,420 actual carcass records, representing 46% of the total database. Considering ultrasound carcass on main sires in the Sire Summary, 1,050,865 records have been submitted by breeders. GAR has used sires from the main sire summary and have submitted 254,883 ultrasound records, 33% of the total among the main sires in the Sire Summary. The AAA database has enabled every Angus seedstock producer to make significant progress. Data helps us quantify a trait, once we have done this, we are able to select the best ones and multiply them. This is what we do. This progress enables our customer to add value to their cattle, regardless of chosen end-point.

Adding Value Pays Multiple Ways

“Producing value-added commercial cattle has enabled us to earn more money on the rail, to have opportunities to market our females in sales like the Profit Proven Sale1, and to produce commercial bulls that can demand higher prices when we go to sell them,” says Margie Mayer Rice of Mayer Legacy, LLC headquartered near Guymon, Oklahoma.

“Last year, when the cattle market dropped due to COVID-19 closures, our steers were held over in the feedlot longer than we would have liked. But, at the end of the day, those steers brought $8.15/cwt. over the base price, because they graded 100% Choice or higher,” Margie says. “Having value-added cattle has also made for happy customers. When people purchase cattle from us that perform well for them, they keep coming back. Raising value-added cattle affords us more opportunities to branch out and diversify our operation.”

Starting with Margie’s dad, Joe Mayer, their operation is a longtime Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR) customer and cooperator. The fed steer premium Margie refers to was from the quality-based grid offered by U.S. Premium Beef (USPB). Such premiums are common.

For instance, 9,937 head (184 groups of cattle) fed and marketed by GAR and some of its customers between May 2017 and the first week of February 2021, sold for a weighted average price of $7.05/cwt. more than the week’s average market price. That equates to an average $100.45 per head premium over the market—about $1 million in total premiums.

In some respects, these cattle were exceptional: 98.44% Choice and higher (26.63% Prime), 63.8% dressing percent, 79.2% Yield Grade 1-3. They were unexceptional, though, in that this kind of performance, from these producers and the genetics they are using, is consistent over time. They aim for specific added-value premiums, via a specific market and consistently achieve and receive those premiums.

“We can hit those targets time and time again, as long as we give cattle an environment to express their genetics,” says Mark Gardiner. “If we can do it on one of them, we can do it on all of them.”

Predictability by Design

“No one spends more time than Gardiner Angus looking at data that is reproducible, and they share everything,” says Ross Humphreys, another longtime GAR customer and cooperator.

He reckons the most important class he ever took in

college was Statistics 101, discovering that where there are groups, there are probabilities.

Ross and his wife bought the San Rafael Ranch at Patagonia, Arizona, 21 years ago. The ranch is on the U.S.-Mexico border. It’s all grass, no browse. Rain and 90% of annual forage production come from July to Labor Day.

The Humphreys started with black baldy cows, bred to Angus bulls purchased locally. Turned out, those bulls were built with GAR genetics. Ultimately, Ross called Mark to bid on some bulls. Mark introduced him, on the phone, to Randall Spare, DVM, to handle his bidding that day. Randall, of Ashland Veterinary Center, is GAR’s longtime veterinarian.

That’s when Ross says he became a student of the GAR program and of Dr. Spare, who started to coach him through selecting bulls that fit his program and goals.

“Mark spent hours talking with me about various programs,” Ross says. Not telling him what to do, but sharing possibilities.

Early on, Ross was selling load lots of steers off the ranch, via Superior Livestock video auctions. But, variable rains and forage production made it difficult to always achieve the sale weight; he was leaving money on the table too often.

Ultimately, a visit with someone attending a GAR sale led Ross to leverage his genetics by retaining ownership in the cattle through the feedlot. Eventually, that led to marketing his cattle via USPB.

Ross was also among the first to learn about and utilize Method Genetics as a means to evaluate his genetics.

In broad terms, Method Genetics harnesses advanced DNA science and technology to build tools to quantify and predict genetic potential.

“We bled all of our cows born from 2011 through 2013, in retrospect, then every heifer since 2014,” Ross says.

When Ross started down that road, his cattle were producing 20-30% Prime grade carcasses. These days, it’s more than 70%. The cattle routinely net a premium of around $100 per head on the USPB grid.

“All I’ve done is buy a better bull every year than I used the year before, using the Method Genetics scores,” Ross explains. “My Method Genetics ROI (return on investment) score is higher than the year before. The cows are better every year.”

The San Rafael story of embracing technology to accelerate genetic progress is similar to that of Mayer Legacy.

“My dad, Joe Mayer, described genetic testing as a flashlight in the dark. When all you have to go on is phenotype, you don’t really know what’s under the skin,” Margie explains. “He was constantly searching for ways to improve his cow herd. He had been buying registered bulls from Gardiner Angus Ranch for years to breed his commercial cows and was accustomed to reading EPDs. So, when the American Angus Association started offering the 50K test to their registered cattle producers, he asked why they couldn’t offer the same test for the commercial cowman.”

That happened, eventually, followed by the GeneMax test. The Mayers used the latter to test and characterize heifers, for selection and culling.

“Then Method Genetics developed their genomic tests, which gave us much more detailed information about multiple traits. We began using those tests for all of our bulls and heifers (both registered and commercial) and still do,” Margie says. “Even though the bulk of our cattle are commercial, our goal is to raise the best cattle we can, earn the highest premiums on the rail, and help our customers improve their herds. Genomic testing helps us to do that. It gives us a competitive edge when we can show a buyer the genetic potential an animal has instead of just asking them to take our word for it. If a person is going to go through all the blood, sweat and tears of raising cattle, he might as well be raising quality and getting every penny out of each animal that he can.”

Retrieving Added Value at All Levels

Retained ownership through the feedlot offers the most opportunity to leverage genetic value, but value-added premiums can also be had when marketing calves and yearlings. Whatever the market, and how ever cattle are marketed, buyers will pay more for genetics known to provide a hedge on performance.

For instance, Mark recently paid $5 over the area market top for calves carrying GAR genetics.

“There’s a $100 genetic hedge in the calves. If I share $30 with the cow-calf producer, it’s a win-win,” Mark says.

“Genetics, genetics, genetics; that’s your first step, whether you sell calves or retain ownership in them. If

you don’t have good cattle, your name gets known pretty quick,” says Don Graham, a cattle buyer for Crossroads Cattle Co. “Add to genetics, a good health program and a good mineral program, then roll into these third-party verification programs.”

Genetics for natural gain increase in value in programs like these that prohibit the use of implants.

“If you take implants out, you have to do everything to increase their natural ability to gain in the feedyard, and the only way to do that is with genetics,” Graham says.

In broad terms, Graham says calves built with documented genetics can command $3-$4/cwt. premium. Next, there’s a consistent premium over time of $10-$15/ cwt. for cattle that fit natural and NHTC programs. From there, premiums climb for GAP-eligible cattle.

“In my opinion, there are two ways to make a ranch work in Arizona. You either minimize expenses or sell the best food, where premiums are available,” says Humphreys.

Adding Value is Additive

“We wouldn’t be here. Most of our customers wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for these value-added systems,” Mark says. “Data-based systems have been able to make a living for us, and more importantly, for our customers.”

Specifically, Mark is referring to the data that enables describing and predictably replicating known genetic performance. It also enables product differentiation.

At the same time, there are opportunities to add value, which are too seldom viewed through that lens.

“When we sell a vaccinated calf 60 days after weaning, that’s added value. When we keep that calf and take it from a 6-weight to an 8-weight, that’s added value,” Mark says.

For instance, Gardiners add 400-500 lbs. to calves at their ranch, those destined for the feedlot. The ranch enables relatively inexpensive cost of gain for those pounds.

“That’s wasted gain if we don’t take advantage of it,” Mark explains.

Gardiners send these cattle to the feedlot weighing 900-1,000 lbs. Whether they or someone else owns them through the feedlot, those cattle will earn the previously mentioned significant USPB premium.

“All of this comes together, and that’s opportunity,” Mark says. “All we do in this business is pounds times price. Multiplying 1,400 lbs. times a value-added price is more than 600 lbs. times a value-added price. You can do it, too, and should do it. Look for ways to sell more pounds off your operation.”

“When I walk through a pen of our bred heifers and have docile girls that will come up and sniff me instead of running to the far side of the pen or running me over, that’s a return on my investment,” Margie says. “When I have very few calving problems and healthy calves, that’s a return on my investment. When I wean calves with above average weights, who rarely get sick, it’s a return on my investment. When I receive kill data showing a pen of cattle graded 68% Prime, that’s a return on my investment. When I can sell commercial bulls with ROIs over 300, that’s a return on my investment. Knowing the potential each animal has helps me make the best management decisions I can for my herd.”

Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

GROWTH

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

MATERNAL

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), the heifer pregnancy EPDs are designed to characterize differences among sires in the Angus breed for daughter’s heifer pregnancy. When comparing two sires based on their heifer pregnancy EPDs (reported in units of percentage), a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability or chance of becoming pregnant than a sire with the lower EPD.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.

Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

YEARLING AND ULTRASOUND ADJUSTED MEASUREMENTS

Adj. Yrlg. Scrotal Circ: Adjusted yearling scrotal circumference, the bull’s scrotal circumference measured in centimeters adjusted to one year of age.

Adj. Yrlg. Hip Ht.: Each bull’s hip height measured in inches and adjusted to one year of age.

Adj. %IMF: The percent intramuscular fat (marbling) adjusted to 365 days of age. Heritability for marbling is in the moderate range.

%IMF Ratio: The percent above or below average (100 = average) a bull or female is for its marbling scan within its contemporary group.

Adj. Yrlg. Ribeye Area: Each bull’s ribeye area measured in square inches and adjusted to one year of age.

REA Ratio: The percent above or below average (100 = average) a bull is for his adjusted ribeye area.

Adj. Rib Fat: This is the off-test backfat measured in inches adjusted to 365 days of age.

Rib Fat Ratio: The percent above or below average (100 = average) a bull or female is for its backfat scan within its contemporary group.

Adj. Rump Fat: This is the off-test rump fat measured in inches adjusted to 365 days of age.

Rump Fat Ratio: The percent above or below average (100= average) a bull or female is for its rump fat scan within its contemporary group.

$VALUE INDEXES

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Quality Grade ($QG), $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD and ultrasound-derived percent intramuscular fat (%IMF) EPD contribute to $QG.

Yield Grade ($YG), $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

DAM’S PRODUCTION RECORD:

Act.BW — Actual Birth Weight: The number of calves each dam has had and the average actual birth weight of those calves. Example: 3-81 means the dam has had 3 calves with an average actual birth weight of 81 pounds.

BWR — Birth Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average birth weight ratio. Example: 2-98 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average BWR of 98.

WWR — Weaning Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average weaning weight ratio. Example: 2-102 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average WWR of 102.

YWR — Yearling Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average yearling weight ratio. Example: 2-103 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average YWR of 103.

DAM’S ULTRASOUND PRODUCTION RECORD

%IMF: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average %IMF ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for IMF with an average ratio of 112.

REA: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average ribeye area ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for REA with an average ratio of 112.

Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rib fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rib fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rib fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rib fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.

RU Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rump fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rump fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rump fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rump fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.

BW — Birth Weight: The actual weight in pounds at birth.

Calving-Ease Score: 1 = unassisted; 2 = some assistance; 3 = mechanical assistance.

METHOD GENETICS® CHOICE EPD AND SELECTION INDEX KEY

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): The carcass weight EPD is reported in pounds of harvest carcass weight. As with other weight traits, selection for weight genetics is moderately to highly heritable and will lead to increased directional genetic change in pounds. The CW EPD has contributions not only from the genotyped calves, but harvest carcass records, ultrasound indicator trait results, and available pedigree.

MARBLING (MARB): Marbling EPDs are reported in harvest marbling score units, with a higher value being more favorable.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): The ribeye area EPD, with a higher value as the typical desired direction, can be used to place selection pressure on this trait to impact red meat yield.

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Reported as a percentage of unassisted calvings, this EPD is used to select favorable calving ease genetics for use in matings to first calf heifers. The value is more noted for sire selection. In Angus-influenced herds that have heavily emphasized calving ease genetics, selection pressure for this trait may or may not be a priority. A higher value is more favorable. For example if there was a 5 percentage point difference between to animals (+10 vs +5), one would expect 5 more calves out of 100 to be born unassisted in future progeny, to favor choosing the animal with the CED of +10.

DOCILITY (DOC): Docility is reported as a convenience trait with a higher value favoring more docile temperament. Reported in percentage units, these EPDs can be used as an accessory sorting tool as needed.

CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): This EPD is applicable to calves out of daughters of first-calf heifers and their unassisted calving percentage difference relative to other individuals. Again, as with CED, a higher value is more favorable and reported in units of percent.

MATERNAL PRODUCTION INDEX (MPI): The Maternal Production Index is reported in dollars per calf produced from the breeding herd with Angus-based genetics. It encompasses direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, weaning growth, maternal milk, and mature size differences in a scenario where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed at weaning.

QUALITY POUNDS INDEX (QPI): The Quality Pounds Index is reported in dollars per calf for herds with Angus-based genetics. It focuses on the terminal side of the herd’s business for feedlot gain and carcass merit genetic differences. There are no provisions for calving ease or maternal traits, with the assumption that all calves are under a retained ownership scenario fed out and marketed on a premium quality-based grid.

RETAINED OWNERSHIP INCOME (ROI): Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point should use the Retained Ownership Income index ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.

METHOD GENETICS EPD AND INDEX PERCENTILE RANKS (%) are a numeric ranking of the animal’s EPD and Index values on a 1% to 100% scale. For most traits a lower numeric value is considered more favorable, such as for CED EPD. For example, a 25% presented with an EPD indicates that animal is in the upper 25 percent of the animals in the Method Genetics evaluation for calves born in the last five years.
