Hello all,

As we plan for our 43rd annual sale, I can’t help but think back to the first Gardiner Angus Ranch bull sale in 1980. We sold 50 bulls and 29 females in the first sale. The bulls averaged $1,447 and the females averaged $931, both below the breed average price for registered Angus cattle sold in 1980. The cattle brought what they were worth, and it was a great day as we had never sold a bull for more than $1000.

Henry made the decision in 1964 to use only artificial insemination (AI) as our only method of breeding, believing that having access to “better” bulls was a step in the right direction. In the early days of AI the results were not always satisfactory, but Henry persevered. Then came embryo transfer (ET). The early days of ET were most definitely not satisfactory, and expensive, but Henry persevered. Our relationships with many land-grant universities and researchers to advance systems of synchronization, AI and ET allowed us the opportunity to work with great people and learn! This quest for understanding and learning together has continued to this day.

For as much as Henry Gardiner tried to breed the best Angus cattle, he didn’t have the tools to make the very best cattle. He believed with all his heart, one day, that would change. This change came in the fall of 1980 with the first American Angus Association Sire Evaluation Report. Henry knew this report was accurate because he averaged the EPDs of all the bulls he had used AI from 1964-1980. The AAA

Sire Summary told him if he used these bulls in a total AI program, he would make no change. His weight records told him that he had made no change. We embraced the Sire Summary completely. Henry’s “real world data” gave him the conviction to trust these new tools. His decision to use ONLY the most proven sires for traits of economic importance was uncommon at the time. Yet, his data driven decision became the foundation for Gardiner Angus Ranch.

Henry recognized that regardless of how many bulls and females we sold, our ultimate customer was the consumer. He was concerned about the signals being sent from consumers that beef was not satisfactory. Consumers were telling us beef quality was inconsistent and fat and confirming those signals by spending their food dollars on other meat protein. Fast forward four decades and a look in the rearview mirror cannot be more striking. The consumer is more connected to production than ever before. We have genomic information and selection tools that enable us to make breeding decisions with laser like precision. More importantly, as producers, we have greater opportunity for profitability than ever before.

Henry’s goal was to breed predictable, high quality Angus cattle for all the traits of economic importance. Today, we know we are accomplishing his mission. In 2017, we began purchasing more commercial cattle from our customers, marketing through U.S. Premium Beef and tracking the results. Since 2017, we have fed and marketed 13,698 head of steers and heifers. Each year the percent of USDA Choice and Prime has increased. Overall, since 2017, 98.68% have graded Choice or higher, 30.60% graded USDA Prime (20% more than the average national Prime production in 2021). The cattle earned $125.98 per head above the base price for a total of $1,725,663.80. The 3,817 head processed in 2021 and to date in 2022 have graded 99.32% Choice and 41.19% Prime, returned $194.37 per head above the base price. Some have said these are remarkable results. Our response is that these are PREDICTABLE results. Our cattle will continue to improve. Disciplined selection of the next generation of sires with the information available insures us that the sires of the next generation are superior to the sires of the previous generation. On Friday evening, those in attendance at our pre-sale program will experience a demonstration that directly connects the cattle produced on our ranches to the consumer. With the help of Brian Bertelsen, USPB Vice President of Field Operations, and several key staff at National Beef in Dodge City, we secured a Prime loin from a home-raised, GAR steer and purchased a low Choice loin. The loins were from carcasses of equal weight. Certified Angus Beef meat scientists, Daniel and Diana Clark will join us and tag-team to fabricate, side by side, each loin into cuts familiar to consumers and link the value differences to each cut.

The sire of this home raised steer was G A R Breakthrough, a sire identified as an outlier for the traits of merit due to his genomic profile enhancing his genetic predictions. The Prime YG 2 steer will have feedlot data and comprehensive closeout, carcass value calculations from the U.S. Premium Beef grid. In addition, feedlot information will be available on the entire pen of home-raised steers. The program will illustrate the significant value difference in genetic selection for carcass quality without compromising production or efficiency traits.

As producers, most of us seldom interface directly with consumers and are likely unaware of the price of beef in the supermarket meat case. Many are unfamiliar with how breeding decisions directly relate to the production of high-quality beef in demand and valued throughout the supply chain. Generational beef production has taught us many valuable lessons. Our commitment to producing “pounds in the right package” was a lofty goal in 1980 and an even more exciting challenge for the future. We are producing beef cattle today, unachievable and unfathomable a few decades ago. We have the tools to design better cattle with every calf crop and a consumer that signals a preference for our high-quality product every day. Let’s do this!

Cattle have got to have proper nutrition…and they can’t be stressed. A producer can use nutrition to get a calf into Certified Angus Beef and grade modest or higher. But he could never use nutrition alone to get cattle to grade CAB Prime. For that, it’s genetics. Half of the equation is solely attributed to that.

As meat scientists for Certified Angus Beef, Dr. Daniel and Diana Clark engage and teach partners about beef quality and meat science at the brand’s Culinary Center and meat labs across the country. The trainings they develop allow retailers, distributors and chefs to experience beef fabrication and the brand’s science-based specifications through hands-on activities. Beyond the meat labs, Daniel enjoys data mining to grow overall knowledge of beef while Diana tackles consumer research to better understand the people who consume it.

Originally from Illinois, the dynamic duo attended the University of Illinois. Diana finished with a bachelor’s and a

master’s degree in animal science, specializing in meat science and muscle biology. Daniel did the same, and then added a doctorate degree in animal science before the couple moved to Wooster, Ohio. With experience on meat judging teams and in academic research, they’ve each taught classes at The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute (ATI) and worked in the industry, from leading quality and safety compliance for meat companies to developing a food-safety certificate program for ATI.

When they’re not breaking down a side of beef, the Clarks enjoy spending time with their children and family dog, whether they are gardening, traveling or caring for their livestock.

For decades, consistent Gardiner Angus Ranch messaging focused on adding value through the disciplined use of progeny proven sires. Today, the message is more strongly supported by the influence of genomic information, year-over-year grid performance and consumer preferences in the retail sector. Since 2017, Mark has documented the closeouts on 13,698 head of home-raised and customer cattle processed at National Beef using GAR USPB delivery rights. From April 2017 through January 2022, 30.6% of the carcasses graded Prime, 98.68% graded Choice or better, averaged $125.98 per head above the base price for a total return to GAR customers of $1.73 million. To further illustrate genetic improvement, in 2021 through January 2022, 3,817 head of steers and heifers have been sold using GAR delivery rights averaged 99.32% Choice or better and 41% Prime. The 2021 cattle averaged $194.37 per head above the base price

Friday evening, April 1, the Gardiner Angus Ranch pre-sale program will demonstrate the value difference through the life cycle of a steer. Certified Angus Beef meat scientists, Diana and Daniel Clark will simultaneously break down the loins to cuts most familiar to food service, restaurants and consumers and determine the retail value differences between the two carcasses relative to individual cuts of beef.

In late January, 123 GAR, home-raised steers, fed at Shaw Feedyard, were shipped to National Beef, Dodge City. Brian Bertelsen, U.S. Premium Beef, followed the steers through grading and selected a USDA Prime, YG 2, 962 lb. carcass from the group. The steer Brian selected was sired by GAR Breakthrough out of a two-year-old GAR Unassisted cow. He also selected a low Choice, YG 4, 963 lb. carcass from the commodity run steers processed the same day at National. The whole loins from both steers have been separated, cryovac sealed and stored at

Complete feedlot and carcass data have been collected on the home-raised steer, as well as the entire group of homeraised steers processed on the same day. Those in attendance will visually experience the Clark’s presentation to better understand the value of quality throughout the supply chain. Attendees will be encouraged to participate in the quality, value, and profitability discussion. The obvious, overarching goal is to illustrate and document the significant value difference in genetic selection for carcass quality, without compromising production or efficiency traits.

Jeff Golden began with GAR as a student at K-State. Following graduation in 1984, Jeff began working full time. Jeff’s main responsibilities include managing herd health as well as overseeing calving of the two year old heifers, and freeze branding thousands of GAR cattle each year. Jeff is as good of a cowboy as we know. His ability to see the condition of the cattle and the country is valuable to us. Jeff and his wife, Sheryl, have two children, Zane and Grace. Jeff and his family live just east of GAR on their own operation.

Scott Tune has been with GAR since June, 2002. Prior to joining the GAR team, Scott worked for Bar Six Dirt Construction. Scott’s oversees much of our farming during the summer. During the winter, Scott is an ace heat checker and assists in herd health at the GAR AI barn. Scott has delivered many GAR cattle all over the U.S. He does it proficiently and with a smile. Scott and his wife, Connie, live on the Gabbert Ranch at GAR.

Eric Campbell came to GAR in August, 2004, with extensive feedlot and ranch experience. Eric assists with heat detecting and winter feeding at the AI barn. During the summer, Eric also shares much of the farming responsibilities. Eric never met a job that was too big or too small and has a great attitude! Eric and his wife, Emilie, have two children, Mahala and Mykelti, and live on the Dunne Ranch.

Kurt Borgelt, native Nebraskan, moved to Clark County in 2004. Kurt has a degree in Animal Science from Univ. of Nebraska and is an allaround good hand in the GAR operation. Whether it’s heat detection, feed bunk management or herd heath, Kurt knows cattle! Kurt’s excellent feed bunk management has enabled GAR to consolidate bull development back on the ranch. Kurt and his wife, Aimee, have three children, Austin, Nicole and Landon, and reside just east of the GAR AI barn.

Words can’t adequately describe our appreciation for the hard work and loyalty of our small but mighty staff. Each staff member accomplishes the work of multiple people, all in an effort to get the job done. Whether it’s planting, harvesting, working several thousand head of cattle multiple times a year, breeding, feeding, processing, calving, repairing equipment…there is NO job this crew can’t do. While we all appreciate our educations, life lessons of hard work, honesty, responsibility and integrity are learned outside the classroom.

Landon Borgelt grew up on Gardiner Angus Ranch and is the son of Kurt and Aimee Borgelt. Landon graduated from Ashland High School and attended Pratt Community College. Landon is keenly aware of the demands of our diverse ranching and farming operation. He assists in our minimum till farming operation and is responsible for much of the equipment maintenance. During fall calving, he assist in tattooing and data collection. We are grateful Landon decided to return to the Ashland community and Gardiner Angus Ranch.

C.J. Bonilla was raised in the Ashland community, graduated from Ashland High School and left Kansas to serve our country as a U.S. Marine. After his honorable discharge, C.J. returned to Clark County. C.J. is a valuable addition to the GAR team, observing penned cattle for health and wellness and assisting in the day to day cattle operation. C.J. delivers GAR cattle all across the Great Plains. We depend on his attention to detail and commitment to the welfare of the cattle under his care.

Calen Bailey was a fall 2020 intern at GAR. After graduation, Calen expressed an interest in gaining “post graduate” experience in minimum till farming and day to day ranch management. She has been a full time member of the GAR team since September 2021. We appreciate Calen’s curiosity and determination to search for the experience she needs to meet her personal goals and willingness to take on any job around the ranch. Calen is unflappable and always searches for the best outcome, regardless of the situation.

GAR Spring 2022 Interns

Since 2013, The Gardiner Angus Ranch structured internship program has hosted 53 students from universities across the U.S. The students arrive with lots of goals, aspirations and hopes to continue to gain useful experience and eventually become professionals in agriculture. While experience is helpful, it has never been a prerequisite for an internship. Curiosity and a willingness to learn, however, are. The spring interns arrive just days before we begin ultrasounding hundreds of cattle and embryo transfer on over 100 donors. From day one, interns learn low-stress handling, horsemanship, reproduction, data collection and basic animal husbandry skills.

Ambree Sandell, a junior at the University of Florida, plans to continue her education and seek a master’s degree at Texas A & M University. Her goal is to become an educator in an extension role at a land grant university.

Shelby Stille, a junior at University of Missouri, plans to become a veterinarian and join a mixed animal practice in rural Missouri. Shelby was raised on her family’s Red Angus operation. The family also raises pork, poultry and eggs to supply their direct to consumer business.

Zachary Klonicke, a senior at Virginia Tech University, plans to return to VT and enter vet school, with the goal of becoming a food animal veterinarian.

GAR Spring 2022 Interns

Olivia Lewis, a senior at Auburn University, plans to continue her education through graduate school. Olivia’s equine experience will be a valuable asset. Her long term goals are to return to join her family’s forestry business, as well as improve the genetics in her family’s cowherd and produce high quality beef.

In addition to our “day jobs” at GAR, the interns have an opportunity to travel with Mark to visit other seedstock operations, feedlots, GAR commercial cow-calf operations. A few nuggets of Southwest Kansas history are always included!

Each intern cohort is unique. We are grateful that 53 students from all across the country applied and made the commitment to advance their education at Gardiner Angus Ranch. It is humbling and reassuring to know these bright, young students are preparing themselves for careers in food animal production and will continue to pay it forward.

Six Elite K-State Students Awarded Henry Gardiner Scholarships for 2022-2023

My experiences in the beef industry provided me with an understanding of the economic and financial importance within the industry. This played a large role in my decision to attend K-State and pursue a degree in agri-business.

Since 2012, the Henry C. Gardiner scholarship application process creates an environment for qualified students to compete for elite undergraduate scholarships. Thirty-three students applied for the 2022-2023 scholarships and represented the largest group of applicants to date. Academic standing, community service, work ethic and future goals are taken into consideration. A panel of K-State faculty and industry leaders review the applications. Finalists are selected and compete in a rigorous interview process. The students are academically elite agriculture undergraduates enrolled at K-State and plan to continue careers in agriculture.

When asked to comment on the level of excellence of the applicants, Mark Gardiner said, “Dad was passionate about education, critical thinking and lifelong curiosity.” During the interview process, one student asked Mark to characterize Henry in two words, and those words were curiosity and caring. “Henry was adamant that students should have the opportunities to succeed. The six recipients of the Henry C. Gardiner scholarships are models for the level of excellence Dad would have appreciated.” In closing for the evening, Mark reminded the students that in the future, they, too, are expected pay it forward.

Henry C. Gardiner Scholarships for the 2022-2023 school year have been awarded to twin brothers, Sage and Lukas Dierks, Douglass, Kansas; Joshua Waller, Hoehne, Colorado; Chesney Effling, Highmore, South Dakota; Grace Knepp, Lincolnville, Kansas; and Riley Krehbiel, Kingman, Kansas.

Sage Dierks will complete his undergraduate with honors. His hands on experience working with his family in one of the largest commercial cow-calf operations in Kansas is priceless. Sage’s early experiences, his focus on ag economics and risk management equip Sage with a firm foundation for success.

Twin brother, Lukas Dierks, plans to return to his family’s operation. Lukas is focused on applying his education and

experience to improving heifer development and reproduction protocols.

Joshua Waller has owned cattle since he was 11 years old and enrolled in artificial insemination school at 16. After completing his undergraduate degree, Joshua plans to continue his education in vet school. His long term plans are to join a large animal practice and continue improving his own cow herd.

Chesney Effling found a passion for meat science at K-State through her participation on the meats judging team She plans to pursue graduate degrees and return to academia or a career that keeps her involved in research and meat science.

Grace Knepp has gained valuable experience in ag communications and journalism through internships at major livestock shows and national marketing firms. Grace plans to pursue a graduate degree while beginning a career in journalism and photography.

Riley Krehbiel, couples his K-State education with real world experience at home on his family’s registered and commercial cow-calf operation. His prior feedyard internships, judging team experience and education are preparing Riley to pursue a career as a buyer for a major packer and feedlot management.

The Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship is made possible through the generous contributions of Gardiner customers, friends and family continuing the legacy of Henry Gardiner. To date, 42 undergraduate students have received $195,500 in scholarships.

Students classified as a rising-junior, junior or senior, either enrolled in or planning to enroll at Kansas State University with a major in Animal Science and Industry or closely related field may apply. Scholarships are awarded annually to students meeting rigorous criteria and exhibiting a commitment to focus on improving the beef industry and food animal production.

Henry Gardiner started artificially inseminating cows in 1951. He continued to work for the next 13 years to improve his A.I. skills. In 1964 he made the decision to become a total A.I. herd without the use of cleanup bulls. Gardiner Angus Ranch has been total A.I. since he made this management choice. Fast forward 58 years and look at where beef cattle genetics are today.

As a student of Henry, I am a verified cattle nerd who started sorting on a “Big Chief” tablet when databases became available in the fall of 1980. The pursuit of beef cattle breed improvement has always fascinated me. My mentors, Dad, Roy Wallace, and John Crouch helped me understand and strive for multi-trait excellence. As long as you keep birth weight and mature size in a proper balance, you are then able to select for as much early growth as possible, provided this growth comes in the right package of stature, end product excellence, and maternal function. Sounds simple. Yes, it is, but it requires discipline, research, and the mental toughness to block out the “noise” and a thirst for “what genetics work in the most profitable environment, and meets the consumer’s expectations.

Our program has been modeled after the dairy industry’s selection scheme for decades. The original dairy model called for the use of highly proven sires for the traits of merit. In the dairy industry the traits of merit

are essentially milk production. When we move this breeding strategy to the beef industry, we have to consider more traits, and more variable environments. Today, with DNA marker assisted genetic predictions, we are able to accelerate the use of elite sires at a younger age. Again, the challenge for using this blueprint for beef producers is that we have more traits to consider. I have always believed with the implementation of genomic selection we could use these elite, identified, younger sires sooner, but we could not “bear down” and use them on a widespread basis until they were validated for all of the above-mentioned traits. The reason we had so much confidence in GAR Home Town was due to his unique genetic predictions making him a trait leader for all of our stated goals.

This has been our focus since Henry Gardiner A.I.’d his first cow in 1951. I used to tease Dad that we should name a bull GAR Nirvana. He rightfully stated, “We will never be able to breed the ideal beef animal.” I agreed, and always replied, “Yes, but we will try!”

GAR Home Town is our best effort to date in the pursuit of the above stated goals. His elite genetic predictions for calving ease, growth, stature, end product excellence, and maternal function are all in the most unique package we have ever seen. The wide acceptance of Home Town sons and daughters across the country are exciting. The carcass data on the Home Town steers is further confirmation he is truly a generational Angus sire.

REVENUE SHARING AND SEMEN INTEREST

You will notice we are selling revenue sharing and semen interests on all bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we are reserving the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull if, at some time in the future, semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Gardiner Angus Ranch retains the semen interest.

It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason we keep a semen interest in all bulls sold in our production sale.

Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.

If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Gardiner Angus Ranch may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointly-owned semen bank for sale purposes.

If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, GAR has the right to collect the bull, at their own expense, for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

Last summer I decided to sell my bred heifers. I had too many young cows so I consigned 25 of 31 to Jordan’s in San Saba. I thought I could sell 25, then calve out six and private treaty the pairs (which I did). I sent Ken a video in September, then shipped the 25 to him in October for sale.

I didn’t hear anything until the Sunday after the sale. My cell phone rang and it came up Ken Jordan. I immediately thought this can’t be good. Ken proceeded to tell me that he PO’d the heifers because he was sure I didn’t want to pay tax on that much money! Of course he was joking. He proceeded to tell me that he led off the special replacement sale (3000 head) with our 25 heifers. The long bred 15 brought $2400 each and the medium bred 10 brought $2100 each. Gardiner Angus Ranch offers its customers free delivery anywhere in the lower 48 states. As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. GAR will do everything possible to deliver your cattle to a point that is convenient for both you and the trucking company. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a central location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. We also encourage the drivers to be as flexible as possible and request that they not deliver your cattle in the middle of the night if avoidable. Gardiner Angus Ranch offers its customers free delivery anywhere in the lower 48 states. As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. GAR will do everything possible to deliver your cattle to a point that is convenient for both you and the trucking company. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a central location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. We also encourage the drivers to be as flexible as possible and request that they not deliver your cattle in the middle of the night if avoidable. If you would like to insure your cattle, you can do so on sale day. Most of the cattle to be delivered from the sale are delivered within 45 days after the sale. Method Genetics® results may just be what you need. In nearly six years (that’s about a generation interval in a commercial cow calf operation), Method customers in over 20 states now have access to EPDs and index values for their females to fine tune their selection strategies. This is a progressive step beyond just placing genetic pressure on the sire side of the equation.

What is the goal of Method Genetics?

Method Genetics provides a flexible, analytical opportunity for Angus-based cattle producers by using DNA technology and incorporating it into a genetic evaluation system.

Who is the target audience of Method?

Method selection tools are geared toward commercial Angus cow herds interested in characterizing potential replacement heifers and foundation females.

Why is Method Genetics different?

Established in 2014, Method Genetics LLC provides genetic selection tools and decision-making assistance related to commercial cattle production. Through the Method single-step multi-trait genetic evaluation, commercial cow-calf operators can access EPDs and indexes on their cow herd for use in genetic selection. DNA technology makes this selection advantage available to commercial herds, large and small, that in the past could only use EPDs in sire selection.

How do I use Method Genetics results?

Method results are typically used to rank replacement females for selection and culling. Producers review Method results when purchasing potential herd sires and use the Method rankings to match their herd goals. Emphasis is placed on the Method indexes for maternal, growth, and retained ownership.

How do I begin participating in Method Genetics?

Most producers begin by collecting DNA samples for genotyping. Blood cards and tissue sampling units are acceptable. There are no enrollment fees. Many producers have historical data from their herds (weaning weights, carcass data) that they have not ever really been able to fully utilize to aide in selection for their herds. This information can also

be incorporated into the genetic evaluation to give producers even more informative selection tools.

How are Method indexes (MPI, QPI, and ROI) computed?

Your genotyping results on tested animals go through our complete genetic evaluation that generates key Method Genetics EPDs and indexes. Method has a database of performance trait records, pedigrees, and DNA genotypes used in a single-step genetic evaluation to derive EPDs for use in the Method indexes. Method does not use breed organization EPDs are part of this process. Because of what we know about EPDs and their derivation, Method results are comparable to other Method results, but they are not comparable to breed organization EPDs.

Can this testing identify parentage?

Method Genetics has a large database of AI and natural service sires for use in sire assignment. Participants with tested females on file have the opportunity to generate pedigrees from this parentage benefit, adding increase accuracy to their Method results. Parentage work is included in the Method DNA testing at no cost.

What details are needed on commercial Angus samples for DNA testing?

Samples are sent directly to Method Genetics personnel. The minimum inputs needed for commercial cattle DNA samples are a unique herd ID, approximate age, and gender for each sample. We can incorporate any pedigree you know, also.

What is Method ROI that I keep hearing about and seeing in catalogs?

Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point would typically use the Retained Ownership Income (ROI) index as a tool. ROI ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality-based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and it consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.

What results are received after testing is completed?

Most producers receive the Method EPDs for calving ease, carcass traits, and docility. Of primary interest are the three Method Genetic index (MPI, QPI, ROI) solutions that accompany the EPDs. Results are returned in a sortable spreadsheet for use at the operation in breeding, selection and culling decisions.

How do my Method results compare to cow herds with similar goals?

Method customers receive summary statistics to compare their herd results to a database of similar commercial cow herds with goals focused on maternal and retained ownership traits for a high-quality carcass product. This benchmark data helps Method customers characterize and understand where their current herd’s genetic level is and provides specific selection direction to reach goals for consistent, high-quality production of USDA Prime and Premium Choice product.

What is the Method Genetics Marketing Advantage?

Beyond the use of Method results for selection decisions by a commercial cow-calf producer, this information has become a reliable means to characterize the genetic merit of replacement females, providing confidence for buyers purchasing replacements. Where do the percentile ranks on young sires and AI sires seen in catalogs come from?

Method has seedstock participants using the Method Prime test and they receive more detailed EPDs and percentiles based upon the Method Genetic population. They have made a commitment to their customers using the Method Genetics system by testing and providing the Method indexes on the bulls they offer. The bulls they sell provide a great opportunity as they have Method EPDs and indexes which are comparable to other Method Genetics-generated solutions, regardless of the testing points.

How do I choose a level of testing at Method?

Most commercial Angus herds go with the Method Choice ($34). Method Prime runs $45 as of today and is used mostly by seedstock participants.

What age do I pull DNA samples on my animals?

DNA samples can be collected at any age. Advanced customers in the Method system have begun to use tissue sampling units on calves after birth. We encourage customers to conservatively approach testing and focus on the newest generations of their cattle.

I am already testing with Method Genetics, so how can I learn more about my cattle?

If details are provided from the customer, we use existing pedigree information (for example on registered Angus bulls owned or AI sires being used or females of known genetics) to fill in relationship gaps, as well as incorporating this pedigree information into the genetic evaluation tools created. From a performance record standpoint, we can also incorporate these data (contemporary group weaning weights for example) into a genetic evaluation and key EPDs and index values include this information.

Do Method Genetics results ever change?

We continue to add performance records, pedigree, and genotypes to the Method genetic evaluation. An EPD is a prediction of an animal’s true genetic merit that has an associated possible change, or standard error of prediction. EPDs are not static values and can change as more is information is incorporated into the system from one evaluation to the next. Customers actively participating in the Method Genetics program can request cow herd updates as needed to better prepare for bull selection and breeding herd management.

The Donors that Sell

As I think about my career of breeding Angus cattle, I often realize we only get so many matings in our lifetime. In the 1980s, the infancy of databased selection scheme was when we, as cattlemen, were first introduced to Expected Progeny Differences. There was debate over the legitimacy of these genetic predictions. Henry Gardiner knew the predictions were accurate because of his detailed records of the sires used from his total A.I. herd (since 1964) and their evaluation in the Sire Summary. John Crouch used to give a presentation called “Like begets Like”. This talk stressed the importance of using the best Angus bulls possible for the traits of merit and breeding them to the daughters of the best bulls of the Angus breed for these economically important attributes. Henry’s playbook has stressed this strategy since the very first American Angus Association Sire Evaluation Report in the fall of 1980. Today, we have more EPDs, more Indices, and more genomic predictions. These tools are more accurate than ever before. Yet, has anything changed? Absolutely not! “Like begets Like.”

I believe that discipline is the key to implementing this breeding program successfully from generation to generation. No compromising of these specs for the important traits for each sire selected. Pretty simple, yet often this is unique due to the temptation of single traits that are exceptional, but do not fit into the needed multi-trait excellence we demand for each mating. Remember, we all only get so many matings in our lifetime!

We always are on a “journey” to create the most profitable cattle possible. Our connection to the commercial beef industry guides us with a knowledge of “what makes money” for us and our customers. As I state in many a footnote: “Yes, Dorothy, you may have it all!” These systems work. This method has been branded as “boring” by some. We prefer to call Henry’s method as predictable, practical, and profitable.

When we look at the genetic predictions of the females we are selling on April 2, 2022, they are simply stated the result of 58 years of a diligent total A.I. program using the best bulls of the Angus breed. We are confident that not only do these females rank as trait leaders in the Angus population, but their multi-trait excellence is our best effort to date to breed Angus cattle of magnitude. All the donor heifers were born in 2020 and all had embryos collected between November 2021 and March of 2022. The donor heifers sell OPEN and ready to flush.

There is little that needs to be said beyond these genetic breeding values other than to share each donor heifer’s flush history and that information is included in the footnote accompanying each catalog entry. GLOSSARY OF TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS

Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

GROWTH

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.

Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.

Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.

Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.

Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.

Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.

MATERNAL

Heifer Pregnancy (HP), the heifer pregnancy EPDs are designed to characterize differences among sires in the Angus breed for daughter’s heifer pregnancy. When comparing two sires based on their heifer pregnancy EPDs (reported in units of percentage), a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability or chance of becoming pregnant than a sire with the lower EPD.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.

Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.

Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.

Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.

CARCASS

Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

YEARLING AND ULTRASOUND ADJUSTED MEASUREMENTS

Adj. Yrlg. Scrotal Circ: Adjusted yearling scrotal circumference, the bull’s scrotal circumference measured in centimeters adjusted to one year of age.

Adj. Yrlg. Hip Ht.: Each bull’s hip height measured in inches and adjusted to one year of age.

Adj. %IMF: The percent intramuscular fat (marbling) adjusted to 365 days of age. Heritability for marbling is in the moderate range.

%IMF Ratio: The percent above or below average (100 = average) a bull or female is for its marbling scan within its contemporary group.

Adj. Yrlg. Ribeye Area: Each bull’s ribeye area measured in square inches and adjusted to one year of age.

REA Ratio: The percent above or below average (100 = average) a bull is for his adjusted ribeye area.

Adj. Rib Fat: This is the off-test backfat measured in inches adjusted to 365 days of age.

Rib Fat Ratio: The percent above or below average (100 = average) a bull or female is for its backfat scan within its contemporary group.

Adj. Rump Fat: This is the off-test rump fat measured in inches adjusted to 365 days of age.

Rump Fat Ratio: The percent above or below average (100= average) a bull or female is for its rump fat scan within its contemporary group.

$VALUE INDEXES

Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.

Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

Quality Grade ($QG), $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD and ultrasound-derived percent intramuscular fat (%IMF) EPD contribute to $QG.

Yield Grade ($YG), $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield.

Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.

DAM’S PRODUCTION RECORD:

Act.BW — Actual Birth Weight: The number of calves each dam has had and the average actual birth weight of those calves. Example: 3-81 means the dam has had 3 calves with an average actual birth weight of 81 pounds.

BWR — Birth Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average birth weight ratio. Example: 2-98 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average BWR of 98.

WWR — Weaning Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average weaning weight ratio. Example: 2-102 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average WWR of 102.

YWR — Yearling Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average yearling weight ratio. Example: 2-103 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average YWR of 103.

DAM’S ULTRASOUND PRODUCTION RECORD

%IMF: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average %IMF ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for IMF with an average ratio of 112.

REA: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average ribeye area ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for REA with an average ratio of 112.

Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rib fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rib fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rib fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rib fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.

RU Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rump fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rump fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rump fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rump fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.

BW — Birth Weight: The actual weight in pounds at birth.

Calving-Ease Score: 1 = unassisted; 2 = some assistance; 3 = mechanical assistance.

METHOD GENETICS® CHOICE EPD AND SELECTION INDEX KEY

CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): The carcass weight EPD is reported in pounds of harvest carcass weight. As with other weight traits, selection for weight genetics is moderately to highly heritable and will lead to increased directional genetic change in pounds. The CW EPD has contributions not only from the genotyped calves, but harvest carcass records, ultrasound indicator trait results, and available pedigree.

MARBLING (MARB): Marbling EPDs are reported in harvest marbling score units, with a higher value being more favorable.

RIBEYE AREA (REA): The ribeye area EPD, with a higher value as the typical desired direction, can be used to place selection pressure on this trait to impact red meat yield.

CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Reported as a percentage of unassisted calvings, this EPD is used to select favorable calving ease genetics for use in matings to first calf heifers. The value is more noted for sire selection. In Angus-influenced herds that have heavily emphasized calving ease genetics, selection pressure for this trait may or may not be a priority. A higher value is more favorable. For example if there was a 5 percentage point difference between to animals (+10 vs +5), one would expect 5 more calves out of 100 to be born unassisted in future progeny, to favor choosing the animal with the CED of +10.

DOCILITY (DOC): Docility is reported as a convenience trait with a higher value favoring more docile temperament. Reported in percentage units, these EPDs can be used as an accessory sorting tool as needed.

CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): This EPD is applicable to calves out of daughters of first-calf heifers and their unassisted calving percentage difference relative to other individuals. Again, as with CED, a higher value is more favorable and reported in units of percent.

MATERNAL PRODUCTION INDEX (MPI): The Maternal Production Index is reported in dollars per calf produced from the breeding herd with Angus-based genetics. It encompasses direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, weaning growth, maternal milk, and mature size differences in a scenario where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed at weaning.

QUALITY POUNDS INDEX (QPI): The Quality Pounds Index is reported in dollars per calf for herds with Angus-based genetics. It focuses on the terminal side of the herd’s business for feedlot gain and carcass merit genetic differences. There are no provisions for calving ease or maternal traits, with the assumption that all calves are under a retained ownership scenario fed out and marketed on a premium quality-based grid.

RETAINED OWNERSHIP INCOME (ROI): Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point should use the Retained Ownership Income index ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.

METHOD GENETICS EPD AND INDEX PERCENTILE RANKS (%) are a numeric ranking of the animal’s EPD and Index values on a 1% to 100% scale. For most traits a lower numeric value is considered more favorable, such as for CED EPD. For example, a 25% presented with an EPD indicates that animal is in the upper 25 percent of the animals in the Method Genetics evaluation for calves born in the last five years.

As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a central location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. Anyone can sell backyard-raised beef to an unsuspecting customer once.

Acquiring return customers takes effort in all the right places. It starts with an elusive element — marbling. Thanks to the Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR) commitment, marbling is maybe the one element that is guaranteed.

John and Joanie Grimes, owners of Maplecrest Farms, located near Hillsboro, Ohio, have been using Gardiner genetics since 1998. Today, they are a seedstock cooperator herd for GAR in addition to hosting their own successful Angus female sale in the fall.

Joanie’s family works hard to put together the best combination of carcass, genotype and phenotype in their cattle. She says the Gardiner genetics spectrum allows her to do just that.

hills of Virginia, started as an intern for GAR in 2013. Nine years later, she and her husband own their own herd and are cooperators for Gardiners. They also finish their own commercial calves to sell as beef out the barn door.

When it comes to selecting Gardiner cattle, Martin uses the big four: carcass merit, calving ease, growth and docility. She says they specifically look at marbling the most. After that they watch phenotype, structure and pedigree.

“[Gardiner] cattle are all backed by genomics and EPDs that are proven,” says Martin. “They’ve got a lot of carcass data behind them. We’ve found that if we buy a bull that’s got a good marbling EPD and is proven well, those calves time and time again hit Choice and Prime.”

Since the 1980s the Giles Ranch, located about 30 miles northeast of GAR, has been purchasing Gardiner bulls. Initially, the Giles’ wanted more calving ease in their herd.

Now they look to Gardiners to help them maintain a functional cow herd that brings to the dining room table exceptional carcass traits.

“Our goal right now is to be increasing our ribeye area and Prime,” says Jenny Giles Betschart, one of three sisters who manage day-to-day operations on the ranch. She says they pay specific attention to ribeye and marbling EPDs.

Selling beef

Martin’s (Virginia) Blue Cedar Beef began shipping product up and down the East Coast in 2019. Solely an online beef business, customers use a website to place orders for individual retail cuts and/or a sampler box.

The product ships on dry ice and lands on customers’ doorsteps a few days later.

Martin relies on word-of-mouth advertising and social media marketing to sell her beef. Built into the price, shipping is free for most products. She believes her customer demographic is a higher-end clientele. Martin stands by her pricing.

“It’s expensive beef. It’s marked up because the quality and consistency are there,” she says.

Joanie (Ohio) was looking to diversify the operation and make it more sustainable for the younger generations to come back to the farm. In 2020, the family started shipping beef through online sales only. Then in 2021 they opened a storefront in Hillsboro.

“I felt we needed to go the extra step to be able to showcase our product better,” says Joanie of the store. “We felt it was really important to be able to tell our story.”

Maplecrest Meats and More offers a full deli with meats, cheeses, salads and other lunch options. The store features Certified Angus Beef® brand steaks in its fresh case and homegrown Maplecrest Meats in its frozen section.

are partners with a family involved in a restaurant business and a convenience store.

The Giles’ family (Kansas) has been finishing their calves for 50 plus years. Fifteen years ago, they started sales of quarters and halves to family and friends. In 2012 they bought a walk-in freezer trailer and began selling at farmers’ markets and shipping beef. In 2020 they opened a storefront in Ashland.

The Meating Place sells individual cuts of Giles Ranch Beef, as well as different packages including a steak lover’s and a slow cooker package. To manage supply, Betchart periodically has a ground beef sale. She also promotes weekly specials on products she needs to move.

Betschart says the supply chain is always a little tricky — steaks are limited, ground beef is plentiful — but overall, she’s found the cuts tend to manage themselves.

“The majority of our local customers don’t buy as many high-end steaks as they do cuts to feed their families,” she explains.

The online shipping business tends to sell more steaks, so it balances.

Facebook, Instagram and word of mouth are Giles’ most important marketing channels, but she does use local advertising methods, too. She works with other retailers in town to promote each other. She sends mailings to current customers twice a year.

Sagrera (Louisiana) is in his second year of selling beef off the ranch. He sells quarters, halves and whole beef from ranch headquarters. He maintains a website, a Facebook page and an Instagram account. He encourages all interested to place their order with him through the phone, but orders may be placed through the website.

Sagrera’s product has already gained accolades from world-renown Chef John Folse. Sagrera introduced Folse to his Prime beef while Folse was preparing a meal for the governor of Louisiana and officials from the Vatican.

“He was just amazed,” remembers Sagrera. “He had never seen this quality of product in his life, ever. That it was

coming from a guy that was local, floored him.”

Together Sagrera and Folse have done YouTube videos, local news segments and a few social media posts. Aside from what he does with Folse, Sagrera says all of his marketing is done through social media and word of mouth.

Customer service

The Giles family is passionate about supporting Kansas farms. The Meating Place offers Kansas-sourced cheese, pork, chicken and lamb, as well as other locally-made products.

“Getting people to buy things that are supporting local, small business has gained lot of importance over the last few years,” says Betschart. “I think people enjoy being able to come in and know that the purchases they are making are helping businesses in the area.”

She feels a sense of loyalty to her small town.

“Keeping businesses in small communities is so important for keeping your main street and your school alive… It’s very important and dear to our hearts to keep it open,” she emphasizes.

Sagrera goes a couple of extra miles to make sure his customers are satisfied. It starts with ultra sounding every calf for its intramuscular fat (IMF) percentage. A 7% IMF or higher is the cutoff. Anything that doesn’t meet that standard, isn’t Sagrera Farms beef. Sagrera ultrasounds again on the finished end.

“High-choice finishes out at an IMF of 8-9%, which is where I want my carcasses to finish,” he explains. “I offer a guarantee. If you don’t like it, I’ll give you your money back. The only way to ensure I don’t give money back is ultrasound at 8%.”

Sagrera invites all of his customers to pick up their beef from his home. He offers a ranch tour if they are interested. If they can’t make it to the ranch, Sagrera hand delivers their beef.

While the Grimes’ work hard to give their customers a unique experience in-store, they are also focused on their commercial bull customers.

“What we’re doing is practicing what we’ve been preaching,” Joanie says.

She says the quality of her beef proves that a solid cow herd with animals that bring value to the end product does and can exist. She believes her bull customers will notice the same thing.

Joanie also loves knowing the genetics in her steaks.

Recently, a gentleman entered the store asking what animals were for sale that day.

She took him to the back and said, “this is R9091, and she had a marbling EPD of 1.2.”

Martin acknowledges consumers really care about their beef and the food they bring into their homes to feed their families. She uses her social media accounts to share her beef story. Martin documents the behind-the-scenes life of raising beef — everything from a live calf being born to a steak on a plate.

“Seemingly that’s very fascinating to a lot of consumers, to see that part of our life,” she notes. “I can always link it back to our website. If people are interested in buying beef from us, they know how to find us.”

What have you learned?

It used to surprise Martin when her customers would say “‘Man, that’s the best beef I’ve ever eaten!’”

“I used to always think, ‘How can that be, we don’t raise any higher quality beef than everybody else does.’ But the truth is we do, and by we, I mean anyone who markets Gardiner-influenced cattle.” admits Martin.

She’s learned a consistent product is key. There’s a lot of confusion at the grocery store, she says. People misread beef labels and purchase a different quality of steak every time.

Martin enjoys talking to customers about her beef and explaining what her family does and why they do it.

Now in the retail business, Giles has learned year-round supply is critical. To address the seasonality of finishing spring-born calves, Giles Ranch added a fall-calving herd to their program.

Betschart has also learned to tackle tough topics with her customers. People have questions about implants and antibiotics.

“Once you explain what you do and why you do it, they totally get it,” she says.

Before starting his beef business, Sagrera always thought selling amazing, high-quality beef was for someone else, for the big guys with lots of volume. Boy, has his perspective changed in the last two years!

He’s seen the entire life cycle from breeding to eating and, “It’s been a blast!” he says.

“You can’t feed tenderness,” he states. You can’t start with a Select animal and make it Prime. That is where Gardiners come in.

“Gardiners offer us those quality cattle. They’re not the only ranch that does it, but they are the only ranch that does it in quantity numbers.”

Joanie and family have become regular myth busters. They have debunked myths about frozen meat being subpar to fresh meat, what marbling is, what ribeye area is and what external fat is. They’ve educated on what a quarter, half and whole beef yields in terms of pounds of beef — boneless cuts vs. bone-in cuts.

“It has allowed us an opportunity to work with our consumers and our producers and teach them about it, so they know exactly what they’re getting and why it is that way,” explains Joanie.

Selling finished beef out the door may not be for every ranch or farm, but for those invested in quality cattle, it just comes naturally.

Gardiner Modern Matriarchs

Matriarch isn’t a word we use much anymore, but its definition “a woman who is powerful within a family or organization” perfectly describes both Debbie and Eva Gardiner’s roles at Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR). Though very different, both women have used their unique gifts and skill sets to fill niche positions within the generational family business.

Becoming a Gardiner

Originally from Hutchinson, Kan., Debbie moved to Ashland in 1983. She worked as a lab technician at the hospital. Eventually she met Greg, and they were married in 1988. She continued her technician career until becoming pregnant with their first child, Grant. After that she became a full-time homemaker and mother. Daughters, Brittany and Sierra, would soon join the family.

As a self-proclaimed city girl, Debbie remembers feeling nervous about living so far from what she knew.

“I grew up in the city, and when I moved out to Ashland it was a big culture shock because it was a small, itty bity town.”

Not only was there a culture shock, but a big adjustment lay in-store for Debbie. She was used to people in and out of the house, abiding by regular schedules, having regular meal times, etc. But, as any ranch wife can attest, regularity doesn’t exist in agriculture.

During the summertime especially, Greg wouldn’t get home until 9 or 10 p.m. She had little kids to feed and care for earlier in the evening just to turn around and do it all over again when he walked in the door.

Thirty-four years later, Debbie can’t imagine anything else, “I’m so used to this now. I love being out here. I don’t know that I would change anything. It’s like God put me here,” she says.

Eva and Mark met at K-State, thanks to matchmaker professor Dr. Calvin Drake. She had already graduated from K-State with her bachelor’s degree in animal science and gone on to complete veterinary school. During her undergrad, Eva worked in the purebred beef barns and came to know Dr. Drake and many in the Angus family well. Now she was back at K-State studying a master’s degree in veterinary pathology. Mark and his family were attending

Eva was born in France. Her father was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. But both of her parents’ roots were in Kansas, and Eva spent every summer she could on her grandparents’ farm. They raised quarter horses, and Eva’s passion was born. She even kept a horse with her as her family traveled the world with the military.

Marrying Mark in 1990 was a natural fit for her.

“When I first drove down here, I felt like I was coming home,” says Eva.

She began her career in Ashland working full-time at the Ashland Veterinary Clinic. When she became pregnant with twin boys, Ransom and Cole, she stopped working at the clinic and focused on the things she could do on the ranch. A third son, Quanah soon entered the scene. Eva was a busy, young mother. She still carved out time to gather and move cows and help Mark while Nan watched the boys.

“I just love being outside, so I wanted to be really active. It’s just where I want to be,” says Eva.

Now that Ransom, Cole and Quanah are grown, working cattle as a family is time Eva cherishes. She feels it is a blessing in her life to be with her husband and sons doing something they all enjoy.

Finding her place

In the 1980s, Nan Gardiner, Henry’s wife, would cook lunch for ranch employees every day, says Debbie. Back then, there were only around six full-time employees. But still, every day was a big commitment. Added to it was Henry’s friendly habit of bringing spur-of-the-minute extras to lunch.

“He would always be calling, ‘I’m bring this person in for lunch,’ and she’d cook for who knows who. She would feed them with a smile because she always had food. Now my house is like that too. My fridge is full. My freezers are full. My pantry is full because you never know what’s going to happen and how many people,” laughs Debbie.

Nan retired from feeding the ranch hands around 1987 but continued to feed the clipping crew until 2013. By 1989, still a newlywed, Debbie started small with the embryo transfer team (ET) and has branched out from there.

“Cooking is something that my grandmother and my mother taught me, and it’s just kind of stuck. It comes from the heart, I guess. You either like it or you don’t,” Debbie says.

Eva has been an integral part of the ranch from the

beginning. Some 30 years ago, Eva recalls working with Mark to put together the sale catalogue by hand. As Eva and Mark’s boys grew and became more independent, Eva found herself with a little more time and decided to pursue an additional credential on her veterinarian résumé. She considers herself a life-long learner and was ready for something new. She attended a five-month course at Colorado State University to study veterinarian

acupuncture. She recognizes the sacrifice her husband and sons made for her while she spent five days a month away from home. However, a few months after her program’s completion, Dr. Spare at the Ashland Veterinary Clinic invited her over to work on a dog.

The therapy worked, and Eva landed herself a parttime specialty practice at the clinic. She uses her acupuncture mostly on performance horses and dogs but has worked on other species too, as well as her own ranch horses.

“I love seeing the results, especially when it’s something good that you weren’t expecting,” she says.

Spokes in the Gardiner wheel

Debbie fixes Wednesday lunch every week for the regular Gardiner crew including the eight full-time employees and various interns — somewhere around 10-12 people. She makes the food in her kitchen at home and then transports it to the kitchen in the AI barn.

As the Gardiner program grew, so did Debbie’s cooking responsibilities. Nowadays, the ranch hires an ET team, a clipping crew and an ultrasound technician. Visits from each group happen periodically throughout the year, often a week or two before sale day. When the ET team, clipping crew or ultrasound tech are working on the ranch, Debbie is cooking lunch every day. With two breeding seasons per year and three sales, she gets plenty of opportunities to cook for 15-20 people. It’s not an easy meal like pizza or sandwiches either.

She makes sure there is an entrée, a vegetable/potato, a salad and a dessert.

“They eat well when they eat here!” she says. “Lunch is important, especially when they work hard hours like they do, it makes a difference.”

Since 2001, the four-person ET team has been staying in Debbie and Greg’s basement. They are so easy to have and are comfortable here, explains Debbie.

“We have ET week usually the whole week before Thanksgiving. They come on Sunday night and work Monday through Saturday.”

Playing host and chef is a big job, and Debbie earns her oats during the week, but she says there are worse things she could be asked to do.

“I’m cooking the meals, but then, I’m also making cookies or doing a cake for the next day. I’m usually cooking all the time. There’s worse things. I could have to be out working cattle. I don’t ride a horse, and I don’t work the cattle. But that’s ok. They need a cook. This my little spoke in the Gardiner wheel,” she smiles.

It doesn’t end at lunch or hosting either. Debbie makes all the cookies for each production cattle sale — January, April, May, and September as well as the November Profit Proven customer sale. She bakes 8-10 dozen of several kinds of cookies, so attendees have plenty of choices.

“I bake cookies all the time,” she says. “When I was growing up…we always kept cookies in the cookie jar.

“I think it’s my calling. It’s my mission,” she states.

In addition to her on-call specialty vet practice, Eva

finds time to take care of all the using horses on the ranch. She also helps Mark manage the cutting-bred mares and colts that are part of the Gardiner horse breeding program. Recently Mark and Eva have started showing some of their trained cutting horses.

“It’s a different phase of our lives getting to this point, and actually we’re spending more time together than we really ever have before in our marriage, and it’s been fun,” says Eva.

Eva handles the herd health checks on all the bulls Gardiners manage. This includes home-raised bulls and those coming in from cooperator herds. It basically amounts to a daily walk-through of all the bull pens, carefully checking each bull’s health status. Eva is detail-oriented when it comes to her bulls. She goes the extra mile to notice the small details like breathing status before she makes a call on a bull’s health.

Leaving her mark

New interns join the GAR team every semester. They consider Debbie’s lunches a real treat. Interns Lindsey Grimes Hall and Elaine Martin even requested to spend a day with Debbie, learning her tricks of the trade.

Since then, Debbie has made sure every Gardiner

intern left with their very own cookbook. She’s personalized each recipe with helpful hints, like how to make an entrée feed a few more or how to make a ¾ batch of monster cookies.

The Gardiner’s mission is to help interns learn and get their start in the industry, Debbie’s personal goal is to help them learn to cook and bring smiles to those around them with food.

It only makes sense that Eva’s first love — horses — would be the thing she most carefully instills a love for in her interns.

“We often get interns that haven’t ridden very much,” explains Eva.

Eva takes time to give each intern a one-on-one horse-riding lesson. She says her first priority is always safety. The horses she picks for each intern are tried and true and do a good job of taking care of their riders.

“If they are a little nervous about it, I tell them, ‘In a couple months, this will hopefully be becoming second nature to you, and you’ll be very comfortable to get on the horse.’”

Ultimately, Eva says the best is when she gets to see the smile on their face as they get to be more accomplished riding.

“When they are able ride the horse and enjoy it and enjoy some of the things the horse can do. That’s fun!” she says.

Thanks to some encouragement from Mark, Eva has recently revived her talent for artwork. When Gardiners host speakers at events throughout the year, Eva shows her gratitude by offering them a custom portrait. Sometimes, it’s of the speaker. Other times she’s worked with the speaker’s family to immortalize a beloved family dog or pet. As a nod to her own family’s legacy, she always tries to put some black cattle in the background.

Sure, matron isn’t a common term anymore and neither is the hard work, effort and dedication that Debbie and Eva put in to making sure life flows smoothly at GAR.

Debbie’s Chicken Enchiladas (Greg’s favorite)

•5 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

• 4 chicken bouillon cubes

Filling

• 8 oz sour cream

• ½ cup chicken broth

• 2 cups shredded cheese

• 8-10 flour tortillas

Sauce

• 8 oz sour cream

• 1 large can mild Las Palmas enchilada sauce

• 1 can cream of chicken soup

• 1, 4 oz can chopped green chiles

• 2, 10 oz cans of chicken broth

• 2 cups shredded cheese

Instructions:

Boil chicken and bouillon cubes in water until done, let cool. Shred chicken. Reserve broth. Add sour cream, cheese and broth to shredded chicken to make filling. For the sauce, combine enchilada sauce, sour cream, cream of chicken soup, chiles and two cans of reserved chicken broth. Pour enough sauce to cover the bottom of a 9x13 in. baking pan. Fill 8-10 tortillas with chicken filling and place in baking pan. Pour remaining sauce over the top of filled tortillas. Spread remaining cheese on top. Cover pan with Reynolds Non-stick foil, so the cheese doesn’t stick. Cook for 35-40 minutes at 375° F. At 35 minutes take foil off to let the top get bubbly and slightly browned. Enchiladas are done when top is browned and bubbly. Serve with Nan’s homemade salsa. Feeds 7-8 people.

Nan’s Homemade Salsa

• 1, 28 oz can whole peeled tomatoes

• 1, 12 oz jar of sliced jalapenos, drained

• 1, 12 oz can spicy hot V8 juice

• 2 tbs. lime juice

• 2 tbs. dried cilantro

• 2 tbs. dried minced onion

• 1 tbs. chili powder

• 1 tsp. garlic powder

Pulse in blender until finely chopped. Store in 2 qt. container in fridge. Use masking tape to label the date it’s made. Keep for 2-3 weeks in fridge. It gets hotter as it sits. (Close to the end of its fridge life this salsa will make Greg’s head sweat because it gets so hot!)

Salt and pepper to taste
